🔘 Wed morning  - ISRAEL REALTIME - Connecting to Israel in Realtime
( 1 of 2 )
🟨 Many people immediately asked for evidence the Rafah attack reports were false, which the IDF provided definitively around 12 hours later.  And people asked: how did we know basically immediately?
- - if Hamas is publicizing it, it’s a lie.  They literally have created an industry with cameramen, lighting, professional horror makeup people, etc.  Yesterday’s CNN headline picture was obviously posed, with makeup on the mourning people.
- - when the figures change every hour or every report, it’s a lie.  You can tell their PR people are throwing out numbers until they see what gets accepted.
- - when the details don’t make sense, it’s likely a lie.
BUT, the reporters and then the public absorbs THE FIRST INFO - no matter how ridiculous.  We applaud those fighting the good fight with information, it’s always too late.  As from the next item below, we have world policy being made on the basis of the lie.
One response I have heard is to immediately emphasize and reflect, which might force people to think a bit, like this: “I heard the Israelis bombed 50 innocent people!”… “Really?  I heard they bombed 5 million innocent children holding build-a-bears! And I saw a picture!  Nice bears though. And beautiful outfits on the children, wonder where you can buy them?”
.. And they try again: Arab channels are reporting about 21 dead in an attack by an Israeli warplane on the tent area in Mawasi of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.  No documentation, no pictures, but watch for the Al Jazeera and CNN headlines.  IDF: no such attack.
Regarding the original, here’s it all in a nice video: https://x.com/AbuAliEnglishB1/status/1795504079491272925?t=BI4qgX821mbOTPwS2JaNOw&s=19
▪️ALGERIA AND SOUTH AFRICA TO REQUEST UN SEC COUNCIL RESOLUTION RE: RAFAH.
▪️CROSS GREEN LINE SHOOTING - TULKARM to BAT HEFER.. masked terrorists identified with Hamas were seen shooting at Bat Hefer from the Tulkarm border wall, and yesterday there was an infiltration team that cross the wall and was captured. Also noting that Route 6 follows directly along part of the wall, putting both the towns and the major Israel traffic route at risk. (N12)
"Vengeance and Liberation Youth" Battalion take responsibility for shooting at Bat Hefer.
▪️PM ORDERS HALT ON “SETTLEMENT” HOUSE DESTRUCTION, DEFENSE DEPT DOES IT ANYWAY.. Despite Prime Minister Netanyahu's order not to destroy houses belonging to reservists during wartime - security forces destroyed this morning near the settlement of Adam a house of a soldier who is in the reserves. The Prime Minister's Office stated that his directive is still in effect.
▪️CHINA REQUESTS HOUTHIS STOP SHIP ATTACKS, HOUTHIS SAY NO.. there was a meeting of the Chinese Foreign Minister in Yemen with senior officials in Yemen to stop the Houthi attacks in the Red and Arabian seas.  The answer: no.
🔘 Wed morning  - ISRAEL REALTIME - Connecting to Israel in Realtime
( 2 of 2 )
▪️3 HERO SOLDIERS HAVE FALLEN.. (not from our regular source, so I’m less sure of this)  Paratroopers Brigade 50, Amir Glilov, Uri Bar Or, Udi Ofer.  (No ages or locations in the notice).  May their families be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem, and may G-d avenge their blood.
▪️ECONOMY - INTEREST RATES.. Bank of Israel leaves the interest rate unchanged at 4.5%; The prime interest rate - 6%.  The dollar-shekel rate stays steady on the news at $1 = NIS 3.69
▪️SCAM / HACK WARNING.. People are receiving an incoming call from a confidential number, the speaker identifies as a representative of the police cyber team OR the national HQ for the protection of children OR the police info center, and requests that they provide a code received in an SMS message.
The code they ask for is the WhatsApp activation code, and will allow the hacker to take control of your WhatsApp.
NOBODY official will call you and ask for any SMS codes, EVER.  It’s a scam!
Hack attempts can be reported to the cyber center -> dial 119.
The cyber center recommends turning on 2 step verification for WhatsApp: Settings>Account>Two-step verification.
♦️Gaza: Air force attacks east of Khan Yunis and Sheikh Radwan.
♦️Gaza: Airstrikes in Nusirat, central and western Rafah.
♦️Gaza: Artillery in various areas in Rafah, north of Nusirat, east of Al-Maazi and Al-Boreij, east of Sajaiya, Jabaliya and Beit Lahiya.
♦️COUNTER-TERROR operations overnight in Shevika (near Tulkarm) and Tubas and Shoafat.  Plenty of gunfire, explosives thrown at security vehicles.
⭕ HOUTHIS shot 5 missiles at a Greek ship yesterday. HIT with 3 !
⭕ HEZBOLLAH ROCKETS at Shtula, 2 rounds.

Iran Blocks Internet During Protests Making It Difficult to Write This Article If We're Being Completely Honest
Internet services like WhatsApp and Instagram are currently being blocked in Iran along with at least two major mobile networks, according to the UK-based internet access watchdog Netblocks. The internet disruptions are happening as Iran continues to see protests in multiple cities following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody last week—and those internet disruptions are what makes reporting on these events so difficult for news outlets trying to wade through the truth and lies of a disinformation war being waged by countries like Iran, Russia, and China on one side and the U.S. and its allies on the other.
Amini, a Kurdish woman from the northwestern territories of Iran, was detained last week by Iran’s morality police for not covering herself modestly enough with a hijab while she was visiting Tehran. Amini died on September 16 at a Tehran hospital after spending three days in a coma, which isn’t disputed. What is disputed is precisely why Amini died. The young woman was allegedly beaten by police before she was admitted to the hospital, but Iranian officials insist she suffered an unrelated heart attack.
Whatever the actual cause of Amini’s death, some people in Iran seem to have made up their minds about what happened, coming out in force to demonstrate on the streets of the capital city Tehran, along with at least 50 other towns, according to Reuters. But the government of Iran seems to hope the organization of those protests will be hampered, at least in part, by strict control over internet infrastructure in the country.
WhatsApp and Instagram are the last western-owned social media companies still allowed in Iran, though some users within the country access platforms like Facebook and Twitter through VPN services. But with Iranian authorities causing mass disruptions of WhatsApp and Instagram, it’s more difficult than ever for people to spread their message, let alone organize mass movements on the ground.
The protests in Iran are definitely happening, as evidenced by the photos and videos making their way through international wire services and social media, though it’s difficult for western news outlets to ascertain just how widespread the demonstrations might be. One aspect that makes an objective assessment difficult is the U.S. government’s amplification of certain stories in so-called enemy countries through social media accounts made to look like regular people. And the death of a young woman at the hands of morality police is precisely the kind of story western liberal democracies want to highlight.
The Pentagon was recently warned by social media companies like Twitter that it was often easy to detect when a given account was operated by U.S. government interests and contractors. And the fact that U.S. intelligence agencies are running social media accounts to amplify negative stories about Iran— just as state media in countries like Russia and China do about the U.S.—journalists have to be incredibly vigilant about news that’s being pushed out during controversial events.
In short, we can say with some degree of certainty that internet access and mobile networks are being massively disrupted in Iran thanks to the protests. But beyond that, we’ll have to take “expert” analysis about potential color revolutions in Iran with a huge grain of salt. We’ll believe it when we see it.
Click through the slideshow for more photos from Iran of people protesting the death of Mahsa Amini, images that we believe to be real because they come from trusted news wire services. But even the Associated Press is forced to issue warnings about the source of its images during times like these, as you can see from this warning in a caption of one photo published on Wednesday:
In this Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022, photo taken by an individual not employed by the Associated Press and obtained by the AP outside Iran, protesters chant slogans during a protest over the death of a woman who was detained by the morality police, in downtown Tehran, Iran.
That about sums it up. Shutting down the internet doesn’t just hamper the organizing of protests on the ground. It can hinder the ability of news outlets to reliably get photos out of the country for the rest of the world to see.

Iran curbed access on Wednesday to Meta Platforms' (META.O) Instagram and WhatsApp, two of the last remaining social networks in the country, amid protests over the death of a woman in police custody, residents and internet watchdog NetBlocks said.
Last week's death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by morality police in Tehran for "unsuitable attire", has unleashed anger over issues including freedom in the Islamic Republic and an economy reeling from sanctions.
NetBlocks also reported a "nation-scale loss of connectivity" on Iran's mail mobile telephone provider and another company's network.
WhatsApp's servers have been disrupted on multiple internet providers, hours after Instagram's services were blocked, London-based NetBlocks said.
The group's data shows a near-total disruption to internet service in parts of Kurdistan province in west Iran since Monday, while the capital city of Tehran and other parts of the country have also faced disruptions since Friday when protests first broke out.
Two residents in Tehran and southern Iran said they could only send text and not pictures on WhatsApp and that Instagram appeared to be completely blocked.
Iran has often curbed internet access to make it difficult for protesters to post videos on social media to generate support and also to obtain reliable reports on the extent of the unrest.
In 2019, the government shut down the internet for about a week to help stifle fuel protests which turned political, sparking the bloodiest crackdown in the 40-year history of the Islamic Republic.
Protests have been particularly intense in Kurdistan where Iran's Revolutionary Guards has a history of suppressing unrest.
Iran's minister of communications said earlier on Wednesday he had been misquoted after news outlets cited him as saying the authorities might disrupt internet services for security reasons.
Social media websites such as TikTok, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook are routinely blocked in parts of the Islamic Republic, which has some of the strictest internet controls in the world. But tech-savvy residents bypass curbs using virtual private networks (VPNs).
Meta and Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Where there's smoke there's fire
On the 5th of February the news dropped of Cristian Horners alleged sexual misconduct with a female RedBull staffer, while the woman's identity remained a secret to the public, we knew she was well known around the paddock. In the ensuing days it remains "business as usual" for RB despite cries on social media for Horner's dismissal (or suspension) and the next weekend (5 days after news broke) he was seen meeting with his lawyer. RedBull put out a statement confirming that there was an internal investigation being held by a third-party barrister, i guess in a small effort to appear impartial. The investigation goes on for 3 weeks, meanwhile the only information we have is that there is an investigation, and that there are apparently over 100 pieces of evidence. Accusations flying from every direction towards anything living and breathing in the paddock, and no one knows what's speculation, rumour, or truth. Until it's released that the investigation has concluded, and that "the grievance has been dismissed". Not that Horner has been cleared, but it's been dismissed. No further word on the investigation has been mentioned since. A few days after that, a google drive was emailed to every team principle, media personnel and big name in Formula 1 with screenshots of the "alleged" misconduct in the form of whatsapp message screenshots, videos, and photos. I don't think I need to explain the online male consensus was, but the paddock's public consensus was to stay quiet.
The release of these images, whether real or fake, pivoted the situation. It's confirmed that the accuser was Horner's PA and that the validity of the situation couldn't be ignored. Since then, a number of drivers have called the scandal "Noise" or "distractions" or simply preferring to reiterate "that it doesn't affect/bother (them)" and reminding everyone that they are just here to drive.
We have seen over this month the number attempts to cover the situation up, to downplay it, and to move the conversation away. And all im left wondering is, how does Formula 1 intend to keep the female fanbase they've seemed so desperate to accumulate when the sport clearly can't handle the maintenance of morality and inclusion they were preaching just a few years ago. Helmut marko, Ben Sulayem, Jos verstappen, and numerous TP's have come out trying to influence the PR outcome of this whole debacle, yet only one driver has said anything of any substance since this whole thing started. Meanwhile female RB employees are getting doxxed (in attmepts to root out the accuser), female content creators are getting harrassed and doxxed by male fans of the sport, and every single woman in the paddock can tell you that when there's smoke, there's fire.
If one woman felt like she needed to come forward, despite having known Horner-and being involved in the sport- for years, knowing the danger and public scrutiny that would come with her telling her truth. Knowing that she most likely will never get another job in F1– or motorsport–again, how many other women have there been?
We've seen sexual assault and harassment committed live on F1TV, sky sports, and on any broadcaster associated with F1 since it's creation. It's not new, most women don't work in male-dominated fields and still 97% have experienced sexual harassment in their lives.
I hope this hasnt blown up yet, I hope we get news soon and I hope the full details are revealed. Most people have made up their minds about the situation already despite the lack of information, but the damage seems to have been done. CH's reputation is dusted, Max has been surprisingly coy, the general feelings towards the FIA ,most drivers, and F1 in general are below neutral, and even if this turns out to be a massive plot for Marko, Verstappen Sr., and the Austrian RedBull sector to gain control that Horner previously attempted to snake out the door with, it's done potentially irreversible damage to the female F1 fanbase thats grown from this past year.

Malaysians engagement with politics on social media, yay or nah?
In the era of digitalization, the impact of social media on democracy and political engagement is unquestionable. The use of social media platforms is a significant advancement in communication technology that has the potential to improve various aspects of human behavior (Lee et al., cited in Abdullah et al. 2021). Citizens of a diverse nation actively engage in political conversation, share ideas, and build the narrative of the country's democratic path on digital platforms, which resonate with the beating heartbeat of the nation. According to Leong 2015, The Internet is widely acknowledged for its capacity to significantly augment democratic processes and practices by enabling easy access to extensive information. So, what are the impact that the dynamic interaction between social media and Malaysia's political scene on democracy?
Tumblr media
Within the domain of Malaysian politics, social media serves as a dynamic space where many platforms influence and create political discussions. While the government still maintains strict control over opposing media, political activists now have a new platform to spread their message thanks to the Internet without having to worry as much about laws (Wok & Mohamed 2017). Individuals have the ability to establish separate political groups on the internet, publish and spread political matters via blogs, and share political videos on their social media platforms. According to Weiss (2012), the political effects of these types of media are shaped by the dynamic and interactive nature of these forms. Additionally, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and instant messaging applications such as WhatsApp serve a vital role in providing information and enabling political engagement. According to Abdullah et al. (2021), it is discussed that the reasons and processes behind the use of online platforms for political information-seeking, which serve as a substitution for traditional offline methods of communication, such as talking with friends, asking questions, sharing beliefs or information, and engaging in practices related to political matters.
Tumblr media
Political entities in Malaysia effectively utilize social media to reinvent normal campaigning and communication within the fast-changing digital world. An example would be in the 2008 general election, political group Barisan National had its leaders prioritized the creation of their online presence by utilizing websites, blogs, and social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to engage with young voters (Mohsin & Raha, cited in Leong 2015). Additionally, they established online e-government portals to facilitate public participation, feedback, and the delivery of services. Along with social media, it helps enable the spread of political messages and offers a direct means of communication, which surpasses traditional campaign techniques by providing immediacy. Social media plays a crucial role for politicians in shaping their public image and providing transparency to users by sharing information to the public, and the online presence of political leaders will demonstrate their interactions with voters, which is a crucial aspect in attracting voters (Hamid et al. 2018). The rise of social media has given politicians a powerful tool to effectively connect with and involve younger voters. Nevertheless, this ease of access also has dangers, since the platform's unrestricted nature exposes politicians to the possibility of intentional sabotage.
Tumblr media
Although social media has a significant impact on making information accessible to everyone, it also presents a series of difficulties, most notably demonstrated by the quick spread of false or misleading information. In a rarer occurrence, a study found out that political parties were using cyber- warfare tactics during the general election in 2013, to discredit and derail their messages, reducing the impact and influence each party has in the election (Mill, cited in Leong 2015). Thus, imploding and increase of cyber troopers and social media users whose purpose was to counter any opposition media content. According to Leong (2015), the internet was filled with manipulation, overstatement, and misinterpretation of information for political purposes, thus infecting the competence and rationality of citizens. Thus far, the government has been actively trying to minimize the spread of false political content, or any information that could negatively impact the nation's reputation.  According to Weiss (2012), a blogger was charged and had possible penalization when they were caught publishing false information on their blog.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, the mutual beneficial relationship between Malaysians and social media has brought forth a major and significant shift in the political landscape of the nation. The connection between technology and politics, particularly shown by the active participation of citizens, has fundamentally changed the old models of political communication. It is argued that politicians and parties are transitioning from the conventional one-sided, hierarchical method of communication to a more interactive approach of communication (Leong 2015). In the era of digitalization, where knowledge is easily accessible, it is crucial for everyone, especially the younger people, to participate actively in political discussions. Participation in these discussions provides citizens with the information to affect the political landscapes that will impact the future direction of the nation.

Power of Social Media in Calamities: Connecting Families, Social Workers, and Government
Tumblr media
Introduction:
In the digital age, social media has emerged as a powerful tool for disseminating information during calamities. Unlike the past, when traditional media outlets like TV, radio, and print were the primary sources of news, social media now plays a vital role in connecting families, social workers, and the government. This blog explores how social media has revolutionized the way information is shared during crises, fostering a sense of community, improving coordination, and enabling swift action.
Instant Updates and Connectivity:
During calamities, social media platforms provide families with instant updates, allowing them to stay connected even when physical communication channels are disrupted. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp enable people to share their safety status, whereabouts, and communicate with their loved ones. This immediate connectivity brings reassurance and peace of mind, mitigating anxiety in times of crisis.
Real-Time Emergency Alerts:
Social media allows government agencies and relief organizations to disseminate real-time emergency alerts and critical information to a wide audience. With a single post or tweet, important updates about evacuation orders, shelter locations, emergency contact numbers, and safety instructions can reach thousands of people within seconds. This instant information flow enables individuals to make informed decisions and take necessary precautions promptly.
Crowdsourced Assistance:
One of the unique strengths of social media is its ability to mobilize support and facilitate crowdsourced assistance. During calamities, platforms like Twitter and Facebook become virtual bulletin boards where individuals can seek help or report someone in need. This collaborative approach connects volunteers, donors, and social workers to affected families, ensuring help reaches them efficiently. Social media acts as a catalyst for community support, encouraging people to come together and provide immediate aid.
Amplifying Voices and Needs:
In the past, the media held the power to control narratives during calamities. However, social media has democratized information sharing, allowing individuals to amplify their voices and highlight the needs of affected communities directly. People can share their experiences, document the impact of the disaster through images and videos, and shed light on areas requiring urgent attention. This grassroots approach ensures that diverse perspectives and localized issues are brought to the forefront, aiding in more targeted relief efforts.
Enhanced Coordination among Social Workers and Government Agencies:
Social media platforms act as virtual coordination hubs for social workers, nonprofits, and government agencies involved in disaster response. These professionals can utilize platforms like LinkedIn and dedicated disaster response groups to exchange critical information, coordinate rescue operations, share resources, and avoid duplication of efforts. The real-time nature of social media facilitates rapid decision-making and improves overall efficiency in disaster management.
Conclusion:
Social media has transformed the way families, social workers, and the government discern information during calamities. By providing instant updates, facilitating connectivity, enabling crowdsourced assistance, amplifying voices, and enhancing coordination, social media has become an indispensable tool in times of crisis. It has bridged gaps in communication, empowered individuals and communities, and facilitated swift action. As we navigate an increasingly digital world, harnessing the power of social media will continue to be crucial in creating resilient communities and improving disaster response strategies.

Angry Bolsonaro Supporters Protest in the Streets
Tens of thousands of people demonstrated in cities across Brazil, many of them demanding that the military stop the transfer of power to President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Tumblr media
They arrived by the tens of thousands on Wednesday, angry and draped in Brazilian flags, massing outside military bases across the country. They were there, they said, to save Brazil’s democracy from a rigged election, and there was only one way to do so: The armed forces needed to take control of the government.
It was an alarming demand in a country that suffered under a two-decade military dictatorship until 1985 — and yet another bizarre twist in the aftermath of Brazil’s polarizing elections.
A day earlier, the far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, reluctantly agreed to a transfer of power after 45 hours of silence following his loss to a leftist former leader, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. But after Mr. Bolsonaro’s years of unfounded attacks on Brazil’s election systems, his supporters appeared far from accepting defeat.
“I don’t understand it that well, but they have to intervene and hold new elections,” said Andrea Vaz, 51, a computer-hardware seller holding a sign that said, “Fraud in the voting machines!” at a large protest outside the Brazilian Army’s national headquarters in Brasília. “We saw various videos. People giving out money, buying votes,” she added. “There’s proof.”
But some protesters had clearer, more drastic demands, which were circulating on WhatsApp and Telegram groups: The military should take control of the streets, the Congress and the Supreme Court should be disbanded, and the president should remain in power, at least until new elections could be held.

TikTok dances have captured the attention of countless U.S. teenagers—and TikTok has captured the regulatory attention of the U.S. government. But the deeper threat to U.S. freedom is from another Chinese-owned app—one with a much broader reach into the wallets and conversations of both Chinese and Chinese Americans. WeChat is China’s “app for everything,” but as some Chinese Americans have found out, “everything” does not include free cultural or political discourse.
Imagine a fusion of WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and PayPal. This is WeChat—an immensely popular app in China and Chinese-speaking communities around the world because of its wide range of functions, including texting, calling, video conferencing, playing video games, shopping, paying bills, sending money to friends, creating information feeds for friends, and reading news. Released by Tencent in 2011, it is the largest standalone app in the world, with over 1 billion monthly active users.
WeChat’s widespread use among Chinese-speaking Americans makes it an important source of news for the United States-based Chinese diaspora, including international students, first-generation Chinese Americans, and others. This has driven an explosion in WeChat-based media targeting the audience. And once adopted, WeChat is far more all-encompassing for its users than TikTok or any comparable U.S. app. In a sense, it is not just an app but an add-on operating system for smartphone communications in Chinese.
WeChat’s popularity makes it a key part of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) surveillance and censorship apparatus. User activity is tracked, analyzed, censored, and handed over to the Chinese government in line with Party mandates, making it a prominent part of the party-state’s mass surveillance network in China. Algorithms are adjusted to promote the Party’s narratives and demote or censor information that runs against it. Those who post information that challenges these narratives face a range of possible consequences, including banishment from the app, as happened to several users who shared images of last year’s pro-democracy demonstrations, and imprisonment, which can happen for sharing as little as one wrong post.
But even using WeChat outside of China—beyond the immediate reach of the authorities—is a fraught experience.
For example, the most common way for WeChat to censor users in the United States is to block access to the account from China or for anyone using a Chinese phone number for their account, meaning that even though a censored person can log in and access the app’s various functions, very few people can see that person’s texts or moments. A more severe form of censorship is to completely block access, meaning that the user cannot even log into their account; while this occurs more frequently in China, it does happen in the United States. Alternatively, WeChat can completely block specific content released by a user without the user’s knowledge; users would only know by monitoring the responses (or lack of them, in this case).
For those who come directly under the eye of WeChat’s controls, the damage is even more direct. Lydia (Yang) Liu, a Chinese immigrant with a Ph.D. from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, started a public WeChat account, MoshangUSA, in the spring of 2018. Liu’s aim was to tell “the truth of real American life to Chinese immigrants in the [United States] and worldwide,” as she told me, and she worked countless hours over three years to build her WeChat account. MoshangUSA became one of the largest outlets on social media focused on social, cultural, and political issues among first-generation Chinese immigrants in the United States. It garnered over 250,000 followers and millions of monthly views.
But promoting a positive understanding of life in the United States—and its democracy and freedoms—challenges the Chinese Communist Party’s narrative about the country. This narrative, which is propagated over and over again in China through television, movies, social and print media, print media, and even posters on the subway and construction sites, emphasizes the Party’s almost messianic role in restoring China’s glory after a long period of humiliation (and the concomitant demise of the Western powers that caused it).
Even though Liu intentionally self-censored many topics, MoshangUSA was suspended from WeChat first for two weeks, and then for six months. Posts that undermined the Party’s narrative—by, for example, not taking a pro-China stance on the U.S.-China trade war or Covid-19, or by exploring the positive aspects of immigrants’ experience in the United States—were taken down. Dozens of articles were disqualified before publication, and over 40 were removed after publication. Comments were similarly censored. Meanwhile, Liu was repeatedly harassed, and even doxed by some combination of state-backed and independently-acting nationalist users.
MoshangUSA is hardly the only Chinese American account to be targeted. The CCP, through both direct action and pressure on companies, manages content according to Party narratives in various ways: suspending or shutting down particular accounts, censoring some posts and elevating others (often indirectly, via algorithm), flooding moderate groups with extremist users, creating favorable content (propaganda), and leveraging its rules system to limit who can establish public accounts.
First, independent WeChat accounts that cover news have had experiences similar to MoshangUSA. These accounts include Newslab, which was founded by a University of Pennsylvania graduate student with a background in journalism; Yalerica Road, founded by a Chinese American professor; and Chinese Americans, established by a group of Chinese American progressives. Each account garnered an estimated 50,000 to 300,000 followers before being shut down by WeChat in the past two years. Chinese Americans was shut down after it ran an article in the week following the 2020 U.S. presidential election celebrating that “America was back, and democracy won.” When Yalerica Road was shut down, the founder released a message stating: “It was a very dark night to me …. [It] woke us up one more time that we need to allow critical voices for a brighter tomorrow.”
In addition, journalists and commentators connected to outlets critical of the CCP regularly have their posts deleted, accounts shut down, or are expelled from chat groups, according to a Freedom House survey.
And while WeChat censors or demotes content that is positive toward the United States, negative posts about U.S. life go viral daily, ensuring that United States-based Chinese speakers who use WeChat to get their news regularly see content promoting critical narratives—such as that the United States treats Chinese as second-class citizens, that white people always discriminate against Chinese people, and that the country is a gun-violent society. The CCP’s goal is to suppress Chinese and Chinese American passion for U.S. politics and make users believe that the U.S. political system is no better than China’s authoritarianism.
Indeed, the Party proactively supports favorable outlets that support its narratives, ensuring their posts are readily promoted and that they can grow without interruption. For example, the account Cicero2020 grew rapidly after its inception in November 2020 because WeChat repeatedly recommended it to MoshangUSA readers while never doing the reverse; eventually about one-third of users migrated over. While Cicero2020 claims to be independent, the account manager is a former journalist of a state-owned media outlet who lives in China.
The Party also encourages the development of extremist voices that can both discredit the United States and its democracy and exacerbate divisions among users. For example, right-of-center groups are flooded with far-right voices that question the integrity of U.S. elections, spread QAnon misinformation, and support Putin’s war in Ukraine. GoWest, whose owner is based in Seattle, Washington, and claims to be Chinese American, regularly circulates content on both WeChat and Telegram suggesting that the U.S. “deep state” is worse than the CCP, that the U.S. Democratic Party is really the American Communist Party, and that the media in the United States is so biased it’s even worse than China’s state media. The intensity of posting and circulating of content suggests GoWest has several editors and many volunteers supporting its efforts.
The CCP’s fourth method of control on WeChat is “flooding the zone” with content creation. A group of state-backed internet commenters nicknamed “wumao” (loosely translated as “fifty cents” after the amount they were supposedly originally paid per post) operate like a propaganda apparatus, creating articles or comments on social media in China and abroad that promote the party-state’s narratives while undermining anything that might challenge them. The Wumao Army numbers anywhere from 500,000 to two million employees within China, with more overseas. Many of the wumao commenters working on U.S. WeChat are based in the United States and have already acquired U.S. passports or green cards. The FBI and other U.S. government agencies lack the understanding of CCP activities and resources to constrain them.
The consequences for targeted WeChat account managers and content posters can be dire. The CCP requires that any public accounts making more than four posts a month be registered in China. Registration means either setting up a presence in China (a highly regulated process) or is dependent on the support of someone in China (leaving that person vulnerable to jailing or pressure tactics). Media companies that refuse to register in China, such as the Epoch Times or other anti-Party outlets, are unable to establish a WeChat account and therefore have no presence on the app.
Even if they live in the United States, those affected are reluctant to publicize harassment or censorship for fear of consequences for their family members. For example, Chen Xiaoping, a journalist for the Chinese-language Mirror Media Group based in Long Island, New York, interviewed the exiled Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui. Shortly afterward, Chen’s wife, who was living in China, disappeared. After he published an open letter on Twitter asking for her release, she appeared in a video on an anonymous YouTube account denouncing his work.
As a result of all the actions against her and MoshangUSA, Liu is off social media today. “This kind of insane pan-platform sabotage has really killed my social media career,” she said. “I cannot fight a machine as an individual.” Meanwhile, GoWest and other outlets such as Tensor Torch (绿网) that promote CCP-backed content have expanded their presence to Telegram and other platforms—everywhere Chinese speakers may seek out news and congregate—to continually crowd out independent voices.
WeChat enables the Chinese party-state to do much more than just manage information that millions of Americans access day in and day out. It provides a mechanism to infiltrate the Chinese American community and stifle its social and political development. As such, it is part of a broader campaign to control Chinese American organizations, civic engagement, and political participation. As Alex Joske and his co-authors concluded in a 2020 Australian Strategic Policy Institute report: “WeChat has accelerated the growth of CCP-aligned media. Its account registration restrictions and unclear censorship process have discouraged political content, contributing to a lack of political awareness among Chinese communities and leaving them vulnerable to manipulation.”
These methods of control give the CCP the capacity to influence U.S. politics in ways that are not easily visible to U.S. government officials and others who monitor foreign meddling. For instance, the Party uses the app to stifle the reach of Chinese American political candidates who take a strong anti-Party stance—such as Allen Shen, a Chinese-born U.S. Army veteran who ran as a Republican for a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Shen said he was unable to post on WeChat because of his political positions. Lily Tang Williams, formerly a law professor in China, ran in a GOP primary for Congress in New Hampshire; she said she avoided anything that might be deemed political while on WeChat, out of concern for her relatives in China.
The activities and methods outlined above explain why the Trump administration tried to ban WeChat from U.S. app stores in 2020 on national security grounds. The ban was blocked by a federal judge. While the Biden administration has ordered a security review of foreign-owned apps, it is likely much more concerned with TikTok because it is omnipresent among U.S. youth today, and concerns about data privacy are generally more politically salient than concerns about foreign agents publishing content in a foreign language. What occurs on WeChat is hidden in a language few people in Washington or the U.S. media understand. What happens in Chinese stays in Chinese.
But given that WeChat is likely to both grow in importance to users and in influence over Chinese language media in general, the Biden administration should elevate its assessment of the threat it poses—not only to personal data but to political discourse and civic engagement among U.S. citizens. All social media apps in the United States should be required to adhere to U.S. standards of free speech and privacy, with major platforms assessed for compliance.
If Tencent (WeChat’s parent company) cannot ensure that public WeChat accounts targeting U.S. audiences are easily registered in the United States, communications outside China are no longer monitored, posts and accounts are not censored, algorithms are not systematically promoting anti-U.S. content, and wumao commenters are not advantaged, WeChat should be banned in the United States. While this would surely inconvenience users who depend on it to communicate with family and friends in China, there are alternatives—Signal and Telegram use is surging in China and there are other options. And it is a small price to pay for enjoying the freedoms the United States offers—freedoms that are limited by WeChat. In addition, foreign ownership of major public accounts—the equivalent of major media on the app—should require public reporting. Such efforts should be paired with outreach to other democracies to ensure Beijing’s long arm no longer reaches into the information public square of the free world.

Concerns? Indeed.
FAO, people in those spaces were reading my private diary out loud as I was typing it.
There were in addition (as you can probably hear): express exhortations to all listeners to change phone sets, change routers, change software, spend money, not spend money, sign up to new email accounts, log in to Discord spaces, join WhatsApp calls, play video extracts, avoid replaying video extracts... much of which I did because I assumed that, of course, they had the GG permissions (an impression they were keen to confirm).
Later, I began to doubt that I was right about this. I became concerned first and foremost because some of the instructions seemed risky. My concerns mounted, first, when an international space appeared increasingly to be looking to British thought leaders and, second, when it became clear that the purpose of participation was to push code and to use the emotional content of the issue to trigger large-scale decryption work. At the time I was on a hiatus but the trigger worked because, as I say, my emotions were engaged by the issue. Later, I decided that I would continue with the decryption work but choose my own sources and set my own parameters. That is where we now find ourselves.
I agree that this is what activism often looks like (Discord, Protonmail, WhatsApp, crypto...) but I stress that activism is not normally powered by capture of the listener's private diary or keyboard. I hope you can see that a platform which is trying—under its self-avowed mission—to facilitate the accommodation of refugees via various official and unofficial channels, becomes a much more sinister thing once it is powered by an unsanctioned capture of a particular participant's devices.
Was I free to leave? Yes, of course. But not entirely without cost. I entered wanting to make a personal contribution and hoped that I might. On leaving I lost that hope and the added-value in my life—my ntieth go-round on a cycle of hope and disappointment that has to do with IRL agency and virtual control—but I also had to view a great wash of algorithmic emotional prods about making a difference and about how neutrality is, in reality, siding with the aggressor. (Those continue to this day—isn't that why we're here?) The prods may have been public and general, or they may have been a correlated series of targeted hooks. I felt a great deal of ambivalence and some self doubt. Was it, in fact, a sanctioned GG-inspired exercise? Or, was it, conversely, an exercise in justifying continued interference? Did I imagine it all? Am I mad? Or, conversely, am I stupid for not expecting this...erm, weird "knowingness" by now? Why does anyone want me to get an iPhone or take people into my house? Is this another threat to my life? Even if there were no other prods, the mystery of it all was a hook per se. The natural impulse is to stick around in hope of an answer and that, I think, broadly explains not just the activity of a few weeks earlier this year but a significant part of the compulsion over half a decade (the other part being deliberate gamification).
As I say, I was willing to help in my personal IRL capacity under normal retail safeguards. I am also willing to work in a wide variety of contexts to interpret code qua "Perks", but there was nothing consensual, transparent, respectful of autonomy or safe about what occurred in those spaces.

How Blender Bridges the Gap between Reality and 3D Animation
In the realm of visual storytelling, the line between reality and animation has become increasingly blurred, thanks to advancements in software like Blender. Blender, an open-source 3D creation suite, has revolutionized the way artists and filmmakers bring their ideas to life by offering powerful tools that enable them to create stunningly realistic renderings. From lifelike character animations to intricately detailed environments, Blender has become a go-to platform for artists seeking to bridge the gap between the virtual and the real.
Realism through Rendering: https://www.creativesplash.co.in/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/whatsapp-video.mp4 One of the key factors in achieving realism in 3D animation is the rendering process, where scenes are transformed from wireframe models into photorealistic images. Blender’s advanced rendering engine, Cycles, utilizes ray tracing and global illumination techniques to simulate the behaviour of light accurately. This result in realistic lighting, shadows, reflections, and refractions that mimic the way light interacts with objects in the real world. Additionally, Blender’s recent integration of real-time rendering engines like Eave allows artists to preview their scenes with near-instant feedback, speeding up the iteration process and enhancing the overall realism of the final product.
Texturing and Materials: Another crucial aspect of achieving realism in 3D animation is the creation of lifelike textures and materials. Blender offers a wide range of tools and shaders that enable artists to replicate various surface properties, such as roughness, specular reflection, and subsurface scattering. By meticulously crafting textures and materials, artists can imbue their 3D models with depth and detail, making them indistinguishable from their real-world counterparts. Moreover, Blender’s node-based material editor provides unprecedented flexibility and control, allowing artists to experiment with different effects and textures until they achieve the desired level of realism.
Character Animation: Creating believable character animations is essential for immersing audiences in the story and evoking emotional responses. Blender’s robust animation tools empower artists to breathe life into their characters through realistic movements, expressions, and gestures. With features like inverse kinematics (IK), shape keys, and rigging systems, Blender allows artists to create complex character rigs that accurately simulate the dynamics of human anatomy. Furthermore, Blender’s integration with motion capture technologies enables artists to capture real-world movements and apply them to their 3D characters, further enhancing the realism of the animation.
Integration of Real-World Elements: Incorporating real-world elements into 3D animations can add a layer of authenticity and immersion to the final product. Blender’s support for image and video compositing allows artists to seamlessly integrate live-action footage with computer-generated imagery (CGI), creating a cohesive visual experience. Whether it’s placing 3D characters into live-action environments or overlaying CGI effects onto real-world footage, Blender provides the tools and flexibility needed to achieve seamless integration between the virtual and the real.
Blender has emerged as a powerful tool for artists and filmmakers seeking to push the boundaries of realism in 3D animation. Through advanced rendering techniques, lifelike texturing and materials, believable character animations, and seamless integration of real-world elements, Blender enables artists to create immersive and captivating visual experiences that blur the line between reality and animation. As Blender continues to evolve and innovate, it promises to further bridge the gap between the virtual and the real, unlocking new possibilities for creative expression and storytelling in the digital age.

Share Your Full Story: Audio Notes for WhatsApp Status
Tumblr media
Longer audio notes can be shared via WhatsApp as status updates; here’s how it works by enabling users to upload longer voice notes, WhatsApp is improving its status update function. Users can now post audio notes as status updates that are up to one minute long.
Over the past few days, numerous reports have surfaced online about WhatsApp’s intention to modify Status Updates. The instant messaging service has introduced a layout change and the option to privately mention contacts. A recent WA Beta Info post claims WhatsApp will allow users to upload longer audio notes as status updates.
WhatsApp status update
WhatsApp is adding a feature
According to WA Beta Info, WhatsApp is improving its status feature for iOS and Android. With the addition of audio notes up to one minute in length, the Meta-owned app is improving the status feature. The ability to record and distribute longer audio messages through status updates is now available to users of WhatsApp updates, which facilitates uninterrupted communication of more in-depth ideas and narratives.
A much-needed addition that will allow users to share longer, more insightful films is the option to publish lengthier videos on WhatsApp status. Sharing events, announcements, or any other moment that takes longer than thirty seconds to record can benefit greatly from this change.
How the feature functions
Holding down the microphone button would allow users to record audio notes, exactly like they can while sending voice notes in conversations, according to a screenshot released by WA Beta Info. Moreover, you can slide to end the voice note.
As mentioned, some WhatsApp users with the latest version can use the new capability. Android users may get the update from Google Play and iOS users from the App Store. This service should be available to more people in the coming days.
Additional WhatsApp Status functionalities
WhatsApp is adding capabilities beyond extended voice notes. Recent speculations suggest WhatsApp will give you more control over who sees your status updates. The instant messaging service is exploring new features to give customers more control over who sees their messages.
In other words, consumers have more control over update visibility. Users can publish lengthier films as status updates. They can share 1-minute videos. Videos in status updates were previously limited to 30 seconds.
WhatsApp plans to improve status update capabilities by enabling users to upload audio notes that are longer in length. With the ability to transmit audio notes up to one minute long, users may now change their status updates with greater freedom and specificity.
Extended Voice Notes for Improved Status Updates There have been a lot of headlines in the last few days about proposed changes to WhatsApp’s status function. These upgrades cover everything from allowing private mentions of contacts to overhauling the interface.
WA Beta Info reports that WhatsApp is now rolling out a feature that allows users to share lengthy voice notes as status updates.
Longer Audio notes
Increased Features for Users of iOS and Android
Users of iOS and Android can access this new function, according to the WA Beta Info article. Users can now record and send longer voice messages through their status updates on WhatsApp by updating to the most recent version.
This feature makes it easier to communicate more in-depth ideas and stories without having them cut off too soon. With regard to events, announcements, or any other situation when more time is needed than the prior 30-second limit, this modification aims to meet the requirement for more substantial and prolonged communication.
Using the New Feature Holding down the microphone button allows users to record voice notes for their status updates, just like they can send voice notes in conversations, according to pictures supplied by WA Beta Info. Users have the option to slide in order to stop recording. The new feature is guaranteed to be simple to use and to smoothly integrate with the current WhatsApp functionality thanks to its intuitive design.
Accessibility and Launch Right now
Only a small subset of WhatsApp users who have updated to the most recent version can access the new function. iOS users may download the update via the App Store, while Android users can find it on the Google Play Store. As WhatsApp continues to roll out the feature, more users should have access to it in the coming days.
Apart from the capability to share extended audio notes, WhatsApp is currently developing multiple other capabilities related to status updates. WhatsApp is developing capabilities to allow users manage who sees their status updates. Allowing users to choose which contacts can see their posts increases privacy and customization.
Yes, it is correct! With a recent update, WhatsApp’s status feature now lets users send voice notes that are longer. This is the essence of it:
Length: Audio notes up to one minute in length can now be recorded and shared in WhatsApp status updates. The prior 30-second limit has been doubled. Availability: Users of iOS and Android are beginning to receive the feature, however not everyone will be able to use it right now. Verify that WhatsApp is installed on the most recent version of the app. Benefits: With this upgrade, communicating information through voice notes about your status is now more flexible and detailed. A full idea or narrative can be shared without needing to be divided into several recordings.
All in all, this update improves the way you may interact with your contacts via WhatsApp status.
