The SUN rises, again... S T O K E D !! on this amazing gift from @kaiandsunny THANK YOU 🙏 !! These two paint pieces of art using the individual lines of colored ball point pens!! It’s intricacies drew me in to really imagine what it must be like to make an entire piece this way. The UK-based artist duo participated in our first #newdeal1990 exhibition for @newdealskateboards at @subliminalprojects in Los Angeles in October 2019. I met them at Subliminal, and we snapped a quick flick in the lobby, with me holding their piece. As one of our favorite pieces in the exhibition, my wife and I acquired it from the show, so happy at the prospect of seeing the intricately hand-inked piece in our daily lives. Since the show was extended an extra month, we finally received and hung it in our house around the end of November. As fate would have it, though, we only enjoyed it for about 10 days, then our house burned down Dec 14, and with it this gorgeous reimagined New Deal Sun and hundreds of other works of art. The piece was gone, along with other works from the exhibition by @yesnikd @persue1 @gregmike @ocularge @obeygiant @stevecaballero @mrjeremyfish @loridamiano @therealfafi and @toybox_monster among others. I reached out to tell Kai and Sunny about the loss, and they immediately pledged to make a replacement piece to help us start to #rebuild the collection. Sunny wrote : “Andy Howell and New Deal were a massive influence over my future! From skateboarding seeing his graphics got me interested in art! That’s why I choose to go to Art College where I met Kai! A few years after college we started Kai and Sunny we have now been working together for nearly 20 years! Last year we got to work with Andy and Subliminal Projects and produced a piece influenced by the early New Deal designs! Crazy how life takes you on a path and you get to work with your idols!" This form of kindness from an artist is one of the most special feelings I have experienced. The sense of creative community that I’ve felt through Kai & Sunny’s kindness and similar response from other artists and brands is an inspiring gift! got a kind note and zine today from @thisisandyjenkins with this opening quote on creativity from Kurt Vonnegut, which I’m sure we all could take a hint from... he sent some some stickers too 🙏... reflecting on Andy’s immense contribution to skateboarding over the past 30+ years... woke up to a rained out Dadlands at home, and although the kids tried to do flat ground slides through the water for a while, we decided to head to the @berrics around noon to say hi to #newdeal1990 artist @therealfafi as she was finishing a mural for the #battleattheberrics... great to see you Fafi, and thanks for the sketch! was looking forward to seeing @samarriabrevard and the other women compete, but oops, guess the contest is actually tonight, had to check it on @enjoi live feed! going way back... in 1992 I had a #prospotlight in @transworldskate in which I made a call out to skate artists around the world to send me submissions for an art book I had the wild hair to create. I put my address in there so people could send me stuff. Some skaters and artists you may know sent me envelopes and boxes of stuff (@obeygiant sent me a rad little box of goodies from RISD, as I recall) . Keep in mind there were no art books about skate art at the time, and my teachers at art school in Atlanta made it clear that the pieces I was doing on walls and graphics for skateboards were not actually art at all. People sent cool stuff and it was obvious to me that this graffiti and skate art needed to be published in a book. The art publishers of the day were not seeing it that way, nor the Ivy League publishers, so my idea sat dormant for a while, until my friend @aaronroseofficial called to let me know he wanted me to send him the stuff so he could try to push the project forward. So I packed a bunch of it up into a box and sent it up to him at his Alleged Gallery address in New York. I think that project became Dysfunctional and eventually he and @christianstrike put out Beautiful Losers. I was reminded of this when Ritchie from @therubbishrubbish sent me flix of the front and back of this flyer I sent out to artists that wrote to me from my interview in TransWorld in 1992, asking them some key questions about #artskateboardinglife and giving a quick tutorial of how to make a homemade copy camera to photograph their art. This is the painting I made for the Subliminal Projects #NewDeal1990 show opening this Saturday. I wanted to remix Ed Templeton’s original graphic with my own version of his characters (swipe left to see it). While I was staring at his original drawing as a reference for this I thought about how much I have been inspired by @Ed.templeton and @deannatempleton Also, in reading more about the history of New Deal, it sounds like it evolved into Giant Distribution later which supported 411 Video Magazine and Element Skateboards. Is that right skateboard friends? @lisawhtkr ?If that’s true then the Villa Villa Cola skate video we made called Getting Nowhere Faster also benefited from this history because it was heavily supported by 411VM and Element.
