I still think the Obey Giant is cool and I’m not afraid to say it.

“Discovering” the Giant in high school was a big deal for me. I had seen it, but I did not understand it. I don’t remember what tipped me off. But once I knew that it really meant nothing at all, I was thrilled. The dominating glare of the Giant softened into a beatific, welcoming gaze. What had been alienating became inviting, welcoming me into a world of dark, iconic imagery charged with sinister purpose. I still see the Giant everywhere, and it still feels like I know a secret.

It’s a matter of record at this point that Shepard Fairey lifts material. His portraits are all traced from photos and everything has a certain “bitmap trace” quality that a qualified eye can’t ignore. I’m over it & over him, but I was already gifted this fat book and I’m keeping it.

Also featured here is my famous Obey hat, in its second incarnation — but that’s a different story.

Le street-art est il du vandalisme ou de l’art ? Jusqu’au 11 février 2023, l’exposition CAPITALE(S) à l’hôtel de ville de Paris nous aide, grâce à une approche très pédagogique, à répondre à cette question. En 1982, l’introduction en France du graffiti dans le sillage du Hip-Hop provoque la colère des institutions et la réprobation d’une partie de la population. Le taguage de la station métro « Louvre », en 1991, est l’épisode qui renvoie le graffiti dans le camp du vandalisme. En réaction, les tenants d’une approche artistique qui ne serait plus centrée sur le lettrage exécuté à la bombe s’opposent aux vandales. Des oeuvres, réalisées en atelier, sont exposées aux yeux des passants. La rue devient le plus grand musée démocratique du monde. Dans les années 90, l’art va, petit à petit, envahir la cité sans l’intention de la salir. Paris, lieu de pouvoir, riche de patrimoine, d’art et d’expositions inspire et aimante les artistes urbains. Ils se nomment, sans être exhaustif, Villeglé, Mesnager, Miss.Tic, Futura, JonOne, Invader, JR, C215, Obey, Swoon, Banksy ou Kraken. Leurs oeuvres oscillent entre poésie et dénonciation. Elles réenchantent les murs de la ville et contribuent à l’amélioration de la qualité des espaces publics. Elles réveillent nos consciences.
