NRE in friendship

I recently looked into a new term for me: NRE meaning New Relationship Energy. So yes, that’s the official term referring to the honeymoon phase of a newly found relationship – but what I want to talk about is that can NRE exist in friend relationships?

I think the answer is yes, there are a few resources about this over internet but they didn’t really do anything to define it for non-romantic relationships, so here is my attempt along with a word about my experience...

NRE perceptions

So, here is how NRE is defined in Wikipedia:

New relationship energy (or NRE) refers to a state of mind experienced at the beginning of sexual and romantic relationships, typically involving heightened emotional and sexual feelings and excitement.

However I think most people can relate to being excited when you feel like your interest click with someone. Here are some examples from a blog I found:

Have you ever met a new person and quickly realized that you wanted badly to be friends with them?

We can really see this a lot of platonic friendships where people will get really interested in their friends for bursts of time – they'll go everywhere together and hang out together. We see this a lot in high school relationships where two people will become close friends really quickly and just connect on every level and then two weeks later things have just kind of cooled off.

I think it’s worth reflecting on the NRE we can experience when connecting with all kinds of love (friendships and collaborations, and relationships with companion animals, great new authors, and new projects are some of the ones that jump out at me as having similar features).

Like all interests it’s important to note that NRE can go in waves, so the energy doesn’t always hit you right at the start of an acquaintance.

About me

As a highly sensitive person I feel like NRE definitely exists in friendships too, I really get attached to new friends but sadly a lot of them have dropped off. Of course this is related to other things for example situational relationship at school or work group, but I definitely feel like I can speak for some kind of a spark in friendships.

Conclusion

This was a very short check to the topic, but I feel like it’s good that the information is in the same place. Especially as I got frustrated trying to talk about this without proper material. I'm unsure if NRE for friendships would need a different name, but I hope more research and articles from people specialized in the matter will pop up. Also the question if NRE can be applied to non-human relationships like starting a new project is still in the air. What do you think? Monogamous or otherwise, we have all experienced new relationship energy. It's that nervous energy you feel in their presence, where everything feels shiny and new, heightened, sparkly, exciting. That little internal dance when you received a message from them, the smile on your lips when thoughts of them pop into your head, the butterflies and earning when you first kiss. As with any new adventure, discovering a new person means examining their likes, their secrets, and their uniqueness. Finding your synergies, and your differences. Exploiting spontaneity. Exploring how your bodies respond to each other and the new experiences you both bring into the sexual space. This energy needs mystery, surprise and eroticism to flourish. It "thrives on the mysterious, the novel, and the unexpected" (Esther Perel). But over time, you become accustomed to each other, your relationship becomes secure, and your experiences together, familiar. And contradictorily, desire and intimacy cannot grow without security, but it also cannot grow without surprise and mystery. Predictability can reduce feelings on desire. Desire can be reduced by feeling of co-dependence. In my opinion however, NRE is replaced with something deeper, something more enduring, something more special. A different kind of intimacy. This doesn't necessarily mean love, but a love-like appreciation of each other. And to me, that is infinitely more important than the passionate yet volatile intensity of NRE. Intimacy at this level transcends the superficial demands of dating, and lends itself to long-lasting connectedness and affection. In a non-monogamous space, we are often forget the impact of NRE on our existing partners. We can get caught up in novelty of this new relationship to the detriment of our existing secure relationships. Yet, if we can maintain good communication with our existing partners, more often than not, partners will experience compersion and also revel in their partner's NRE, effectively creating a self-perpetuating positive feedback loop. the social network

I met more people today than I have in total in the last two weeks. It was my friend’s birthday celebration at his sister’s place and it was so refreshing to be surrounded by so many familiar faces at once. It felt like I was back on the grid! 

On the way to his sister’s place, he divulged that he was no longer single. Despite having seen this coming, I was quite honestly appalled. This guy lives on compulsions. He seeks momentary pleasures that make him forget his sorrows. He gets high on approval and love. He hasn’t yet learnt how to be happy being single and feeling adequate being by himself, but here he is in another relationship. I haven’t been super impressed by the girl, but the question isn’t about her, it’s about him. I would have reacted the same way regardless of who he got into a relationship. 

After dinner, he broke the news to his family. Apart from the few faint sounds of surprise, there was an air of concern. Light gossip about the girl evolved into conversation about his ex-wife not being fit for him and that he should remove her from his social media. He wasn’t very enthusiastic about the idea but we forced him into it. Yes, ‘forced’ is the right word. Albeit, it was for his own good. If we wants to let someone else into his life, the least he can do is get his ex out. Out of his life, out of his social network. 

I worry for him. It is clear he is still struggling with the void his ex left him with. Ever since, he has desperately been trying to fill that void with girls, noise, and alcohol. The biggest red flag: his current girlfriend reminds him of his ex.
