Trying to track down as many interviews/behind the scenes things for THW that I can so I can easily check or link to things and MAN. I forgot how upsetting some of these quotes are.
Like I sure do love to see Dean call Toothless "corrupted" in like four different interviews. Love to see him constantly misuse terms like "domesticated". Love to read how that for the Light Fury, this supposed wild pure untainted fierce powerful feral call of the wild wild animal, the sound designers had to "suggest she was female" and so leaned on stereotypes. Love to read that Toothless "kinda forgot" about his former life after only ten years. Love to read that Astrid is meant to be Hiccup's "true support and future". Love to read basically anything regarding the Light Fury and see the filmmakers talk about how she's a female and needs to look like a female and move like a female and act like a female and sound like a female. Love to read how she couldn't look too reptilian despite literally being a dragon and that she couldn't have leopard markings because they looked a little too close to scars. Love to read how she "promises a family and the propagation of Toothless' species" when she's not even actually a Night Fury. Love to read how it was intended that Toothless' "animal instincts"/attraction to the Light Fury become more important to him than his friendship with Hiccup. Love to read how they purposefully changed Valka's design to make her "more appealing". Love to read how one of the functions the Light Fury is supposed to serve is to be "a clarion reminder that wild dragons will attack a human when they see them" like that makes any sense at all to anyone who has seen literally any other piece of HTTYD media. Love to read how the other function she's supposed to serve is to show "that when you find love, that's where you belong" like Hiccup's platonic/brotherly love for Toothless meant nothing when on the official website they're referred to as soulmates. Love to read that the reunion scene is meant to be a "last joyride" and "not an indication that they see each other again".
I hate this movie.

You know, the HTTYD trilogy truly is one of the best ones out there! I mean, How To Train Your Dragon, Gift of the Night Fury and How To Train Your Dragon 2 are all so good. :) What a trilogy!

The dragons going back to dragon prison the Hidden World at the end of The Nine Realms is the absolute cherry on top of why that show was a waste of time
Because when you hear the premise you think:
“Oh wow! Some random boy discovered Toothless’s hideously inbred descendant thousands of years later! This must finally be the time humans and dragons are meant to co-exist after the Berkians did nothing to help make the world a better place for humans and dragons to co-exist because the dragons left them!”
But no. The dragons piss off back to their hole in the end.
So…I guess there will never be a time where humans and dragons can co-exist? What an uplifting and heartwarming saga!
It really was a waste of time and it once again shows why every single dragon going off to hide in a mushroom infested hole while the Berkians chill in the middle of nowhere on top of a Minecraft chunk error was, perhaps, not the best way to pave the way for peaceful co-existence between humans and dragons.

Something that especially bothers me about the ending of 3. Is that they want to have their sad "The dragons leaving" ending. and also have them still get to be friends.
They want you to be sad at the dragons leaving, that hiccup and everyone else might never see their best friends ever again.
But they still want their cute ending where hiccups gets get to play with toothless's kids.
They want you to be sad that hiccup misses his friend on the holidays and wants him to be there with him.
And then he comes in, eats the fish, and leaves. Or in the snoggletog log thing, are just kinda there like the dragons never left.
They really did want to have their cake and it too, and not just with the things you've mentioned.
"Hiccup and Toothless' friendship is the friendship of a lifetime and they're canonically platonic soulmates but also a big part of this film is about how Toothless' instincts and attraction to the Light Fury become more important than his bond with Hiccup. Also the only reason that Toothless didn't accept the auto-tail in GOTNF was because there wasn't a hot girl Fury around that he needed to impress. Oh and Toothless almost murders Hiccup during the reunion scene before barely recognizing him at the last second."
"The Light Fury represents the call of the wild - she's a regal, powerful, fierce creature that's untainted by humanity - but she's also the cute marketable girlfriend™ character who has pink sparkly hearts on her forehead. She couldn't have interesting markings that weren't made out of glitter because they might have looked too much like scars. Also she sounds and acts like a domestic cat."
"Toothless is a wild animal with the instincts, behaviors, and needs to match and where he truly belongs is in the wild and Hiccup needs to learn to accept that but also he's the protagonist's adorable "pet" that runs around panting and slobbering and acting like a dog but also he's this extremely intelligent being that's smarter than any real non-human animal and he has many humanlike behaviors and he can draw and understand the value of art and he can quickly understand and negotiate in a hostage situation and he has an updated design that makes him look more humanlike and emote in more humanlike ways than ever before."

it really is crazy how much worse all those interviews and other things make thw. like no you're not just imagining all that shit it was intended and it's even worse than you thought
like idk if you deleted every single interview, the art book, the film commentary, the production notes, the script/screenplay etc. thw wouldn't suddenly become a great movie but it would be a lot easier to look past a lot of things - like hey maybe i'm being too salty and reading a bit too much into things. but no. here's dean calling toothless "corrupted" in multiple different interviews

Chunkful doodles bc I've been thinking about my HTTYD AU again recently. She's Toothless' mate in my AU and I love her a lot 💚
(For those who don't know she's chonky because she's a different species of Night Fury than Toothless - specifically one that lives in colder climates.)

I just noticed how much shorter Toothless' little middle nubs got
(Sorry the angle isn't the best in the second picture)
I think it may be partly because of the angle(s), buuut looking at other screencaps it seems like they might actually be at least slightly shorter. They definitely changed the shape/design of his ear plates a bit in HTTYD 2 (maybe you could even find some differences between HTTYD 2 and THW if you looked closely enough) among other things, so I wouldn't be surprised if they made the middle pair shorter for whatever reason.

It won’t happen, but it would be pretty funny if in the live action HTTYD they abandon the whole “Toothless is the last Night Fury” thing and show some extra furies in the background like it’s no big deal.
Well, there is that kid's book that's a retelling of the first film that has other Night Furies in the background on a couple pages......🤔
But yeah all joking aside I can't see that happening but I agree it would be very funny!

thinking again about how dumb it is that they made night furies sooooooo powerful but canonically the reason they went extinct is because of some guy™

Sometimes I wonder how long Toothless has been the last Night Fury.
Was he born into a full colony (can’t think of the proper word for a groups of dragons right now lol) of Night Furies that had their numbers diminish over time? Were his parent(s) and maybe some baby siblings with him when he hatched? If so then were they killed when he was a baby or maybe they weren’t killed until he and his possible siblings (who of course would get killed off too) were adults? Was he completely alone when he hatched, no parents or siblings in sight because they were killed but his family’s killers just didn’t find his egg?
Poor guy :(
I think canonically the intention/ideas that make the most sense are that he was separated from his family when he was very very young or that he hatched without other Night Furies around, and all other Night Furies were killed soon after or even before he hatched. It explains why he was completely unaware of multiple Night Fury abilities, why he seemed to have no idea how to act around the Light Fury (though that can also be partly/mostly explained by the fact that Light Furies are a separate species that realistically would have their own behaviors), why he doesn't seem to recognize Grimmel or really even care at all that he's the last, and it also explains a couple of comments about Night Furies various characters made in HTTYD 2/THW/RTTE.
Personally though I just ignore the whole last of his kind thing for my AU(s)/headcanon - I hate how they handled it (and don't really like that trope in general). Like I don't feel that sad about Toothless being the last because actually he's not lmao

Thinking about THW again (negative) and if you see Toothless and Hiccup thru a disabled lens as a sort of mobility aid/service animal and handler to each other their split-up is even more tragic (not in a good way). The automatic tailfin wouldn't last long without Hiccup's care and Hiccup lost his wings to explore the world :(
"Hiccup lost his wings to explore the world" 😔😔😔😔😔
And yeah Toothless would have no way of maintaining the auto-tail - in all previous parts of the franchise his prosthetics were treated rather realistically and could break etc.........but as soon as he needs to go hide away in the mushroom hell hole he now has this magical invulnerable one that can last for years and years and years with no maintenance while he's living in the wild as a ~wild animal~?? Um.

wish the whole "deathgrippers eat dragon meat" was more of a scavenger thing. i imagine that, since dragons are huge, its hard for smaller predators to break down the body, but a deathgripper would have a way easier time! let them be the clean-up crew eating dead dragon bodies!!!
Another extremely late reply but I really like this idea - despite HTTYD having what, 100+ dragon species? There's only one dragon species that's particularly scavenger-ish that I can think of (Grim Gnasher), and even then it's more that they're known for hunting sick/dying dragons in Vanaheim or whatever it's called......so they're not even really scavengers. Like yeah most animals that are considered scavengers don't literally just eat carrion but like??? Scavengers play an important role in ecosystems - like you say it only makes sense that there's some large dragons out there helping clean up all the big dragon bodies rotting around so where the hell are the species that are primarily or exclusively carrion-eaters?
Also it would have, idk, made more sense with the whole "dragons are amazing creatures but in the end they are wild animals with powerful instincts" and "dragons are a part of nature and it's where they truly belong" stuff they were really trying to push but whatever I guess instead of actually making some sense and possibly teaching kids something they just had to make the creatures that are meant to literally be drugged and mistreated animals EVIL CANNIBAL DRAGON KILLERS!!!

The other thing about the Light Fury being "Untameable wild beast" or whatever is it's just not true!!! She's like that because she was abused by humans! ALSO! She literally saves hiccups life at the end of the movie! And is okay with being around humans (If not still skittish and scared a little bit) and lets hiccup touch her! Like she's not "Untameable" she's literally just scared of humans for valid reasons.
Yeah that's definitely yet another reason why "She's a clarion reminder that wild dragons will attack a human when they see them!!!!" and all that shit makes literally no fucking sense, even when specifically talking about her. Like, isn't the main reason she was so aggressive towards Hiccup and the other vikings at first because her only previous experience with humans was getting captured and muzzled and thrown in a cage and drugged by them? Wasn't her throwing Hiccup right out of his saddle an attempt to rescue Toothless from him because she thought that humans were all bad at the time due to her experiences? Oh no I guess it's just because she's so ~wild~ my mistake.
And yep in the end they let her save Hiccup and at least show some small amount of affection towards him. Had to attempt to make her at least somewhat likeable I suppose. (Too bad that little bit of character growth is undone two minutes later when she's literally the first dragon to leave, and in Homecoming when she gets upset about Toothless trying to tell their kids about his pal Hiccup.)
