It's may 10th where I live, so happy birthday Nice and happy birthday to me as well! This pic almost didn't happen as I'm going through some shit™, and it's definitely not my fave among the ones I've done, but I'm glad I found in me the strength to upkeep this silly tradition of mine.

ok..... this week was the 10 year anniversary of hamatora s1e7 "black cosmos." this is the one ep in the series where Everything changes i think. its not quite a complete 180 since you can kind of see it coming but it's a huge shift still. i can't talk about it without going into spoilers so. be warned

art's death scene fucks me up so bad lol. it's part of why i think hamatora is really made for rewatching because it hits even harder when you know what's on the horizon in re:hama and when you know What moral is saying to him in his "final" moments. it all comes back to skill in the end lol doesn't it. art's blood splattering across his headstone WRECKS me as does knowing that nice won't know what's happened until it's way too late. and that nice has everything to do with skill as well lol. "it has nothing to do with you" my ass

hiroshi kamiya's voice acting is fucking phenomenal here too imo and the "it has nothing to do with you" directed at nice is probably the hardest-hitting line in the entire series...i think. anyway i need to go cry now

i will say the new enstars producer (? i have not read the notes sorry) reminds me of another character named nice from hamatora WAYYYYYY back and they do look similar. looks like they just took his bandages and gave him a purple streak

Back then, I think what made me watch the show was the artstyle and considering how in love I was with Durarara back then; Hamatora instantly got me in. That and the crime solving!! I love that!

Stayed for Birthday and Ratio but re-visiting it back—I started liking Nice A LOT as a character and may or may not start shipping Murasaki and him together 😅

Back then, I do not see the appeal of NiceArt…? But now, I kind of see it? Actually, I can see all the appeal of ships in there

It's funny I started watching Hamatora again after having seen a few episodes back in 2014, and I was initially like "hm...this is not very good..." but I kept watching it bc like it's fun and the aesthetic is impeccable, and now I've finished it and I'm just sitting here like. "This has emotionally affected me"

A conversation in cafe nowhere about colours.

my first fic and may I just say Ive never felt so attacked for spelling colour with a U untill posting this.

Sometimes, Nice sits back and just listens to those around him. He watches the colours of their voices ebb and flow. Half the time he doesn't even know what those nearby are talking about.

Nice just watches and listens.

Watches Master dark plum voice interact with Konekos bright green. Listens to Ratio and his sky coloured voice try to talk Birthday and his electric blue out of mowing lawns by tying the lawnmower to the back of his bike and driving across lawns. Hajime is eating the last of Nice's paycheck away, meaning her coral isn't making an appearance.

Murasaki slides into the seat next to Nice. "You've been strangely quiet," he says, "What are you thinking about? It's not something dangerous, is it?"

Nice frowns, absolutely not pouting. "You act like every thought I have is a bad one."

"I have yet to see otherwise," Murasaki responds drily. "But seriously, you look serious right now. What's up?" The concern in his voice also shows a bit on his face. Nice sighs lightly, only a bit exasperated, "You worry too much. I'm just thinking about the colours."

"What colours?" Asks Koneko, who wasn't doing a very good job of pretending she wasn't listening in. "Y'know, the colours." Nice waves a hand to show the general room and colours the quiet noise causes.

"No, I don't." Murasaki doesn't look like he's joking, Koneko looks concerned, Hajime is now watching him out of the corner of her eye. Master looks as if he's deep in thought or trying to remember something. Its clear everyone has no idea what he's talking about. Weird

Sensing the mood change, Ratio and Birthday turn to watch the counter.

"I guess none of you see sound then. Sucks for all of you." Nice shrugs. It really does suck for them, being unable to see sound must make life so dull and colourless. Nice watches his surroundings, like always, sees Hajime tilt her head slightly in confusion, the slight furrow in Ratios brow meaning he's deep in thought, and Birthday- "You can't see sound, you hear it!"

Nice turns to look at Birthday head-on. "Your voice is electric blue." "Huh?" Is what he gets in response. "Did you hit your head? maybe you have a concussion." Koneko adds in uncertainly. "But what if," Ratio mumbles to himself, "Maybe..."

"Ah," Master says, "If I remember correctly, I think what you have is synesthesia, Nice. When you hear sounds you see colour, right?" "Mhm." Nice nods.

"Synesthesia," Hajime repeats to herself. 

"It is a neurological condition in the brain where the sensory paths lead to other parts of the brain. It's estimated that one in 2,000 people have it and it's more common in women than men." Ratio informs.

"So he's fine," Koneko says, mainly reassure herself of that fact.

"So wait, I sound electric blue to you? Not yellow, or red, or something cooler?" "What colour is cool to you?" Murasaki asks Birthday.

"What colour is my voice?" Koneko asks, chatty as ever. "Bright green, like spring grass. Ratio's is winter sky blue, and Master has a dark plum voice. Hajime's pale coral." 

"Can you eat coral?" "I don't think so, Hajime." "Hmph."

"What's my colour?" Murasaki asks.

"Smooth peanut butter brown, not the crunchy kind."

"Peanut butter!?" Says the comforting and familiar brown of Murasaki's voice. It's a calming colour Nice gets to see every day.

"Electric blue is way better than peanut butter!" Birthday cackles and Nice finds himself snickering along too, feeling happy immersed in the rainbow of his friend's voices.

hamatora and "it has nothing to do with you"

ok so since i'm still battling a serious case of hamatora-brain in 2023 i rewatched it again just now with one of my friends. and one thing that stood out to me this time was just how often the phrase "it has nothing to do with you"/"none of your business" and variations of it come up in the series. like i didn't keep track of it but "kankeinai" is in there at least once every few episodes. this got long sorry

i don't know if it's the first instance of it but the most prominent one would be art snapping at nice after nice spitball-solves the prison break-in case by correctly guessing moral's MO in the middle of the first season. 君には関係ない！ one of the rawest line deliveries in all of anime forever. anyway this got me thinking about how i feel that selfishness is a key theme in hamatora and i believe that that selfishness can manifest itself as like... the characters wanting to keep others out of their 'business' as a way to decisively solve a situation for themself Alone.

obviously this is most on display with art's whole deal (being insistent on solving the moral case alone and having that backfire on him several times in the chest in a graveyard in the rain)(blowing up the whole city to grant his dead brother's wish instead of you know. talking to any of his friends about it) but we see other characters do this kind of thing too. like um hang on

nice taking off to fight moral on the boat alone

murasaki going into business for himself and confronting art (and subsequently getting his shit rocked by freemum)

hajime sacrificing herself to momoka and co and leaving nothing but a letter for nice

ratio being so serious about 1v1ing nice in order to save suruga (and birthday and chiyuu)

three trying to Atone For His Sins with the way he was running that orphanage

like that kind of thing. everyone wants to try and handle their Problems all alone as some sort of way of like...finding closure for themselves i think. they don't want to get others involved in their shit for fear of taking away some of the satisfaction that they think will come from them solving things themself (even if the thing they are doing is for the sake of another character.....eg "nice, it's over. i'm coming home now." lol)

if anyone out there who still cares about hama in this day and age has any thoughts about this i would Love to hear them. even if u think i am way off the mark lmao actually please correct me if i'm wrong. i just was really fascinated by just how often i heard that "it has nothing to do with you" line in the series over and over. everything has everything to do with the whole cast of characters they just don't want to talk about it.
