Anime Talk - Yofukashi no Uta
Since I just finished with this anime, I thought there were a few things I would like to say. This is not a review. It's mainly a fun fact I happened to notice thanks to gaining some knowledge outside the anime that only Japanese people and people learning about Japanese culture will know.
Yofukashi no Uta (calling of the night in English) has protagonists Yamori Kou (a human) and our subject of discussion, Nanakusa Nazuna, a vampire.
Nazuna is an interesting character. I don't find her cute in any way like other characters seem to do, but I like her personality. She's fun-loving and fun to watch. What I learned about her relates, not to her personality or anything. It just relates to her name.
Around New Year's Japanese people eat a lot of rich foods of all kinds for seveeral days. Each dish has a meaning and everything, it's very initeresting (I can't deny I wouldn't mind getting an exact chart of what each dish is supposed to bring you in the new year). But after all this, you want something a little plain that is also easy on the stomach. You eat this on January 7th. This is called Nanakusagayu (seven grasses porridge). Nanakusa is the seven grasses.
Now, one of these plants you find in Nanakusagayu is a plant called shepherd's purse. In Japanese, this plant is cakllled Nazuna.
Another one of the vampires is called Seri, which is the name of Japanese parsley and is another plant you can find in Nanakusagayu.
We also have Suzushiro Hatsuka. Suzushiro is a daikon raddish that can also be found in Nanakusagayu.
The same is true for Kohakobe Midori. Hakobera or Hakobe is called chickenweed in English and it should come as no surprise that this can also be found in Nanakusagayu at this point.
Then how about Honda Kabura? True, the family name is nothing special, but Kabura is a turnip, which is another ingredient in Nanakusagayu.
The last one to mention is Hirata Niko. I find her connection to be a bit less obvious, but just a bit. Her connection is a plant called tabirako, which is Japanese nipplewort. They simply switched around the kanji in the plant name and added "ni" for whatever reason.
The final plant is called gogyou, hahakogusa or jersey cudweed in English. As far as I can see, there is no character connected to this plant, yet.
Why am I posting this? I have no clue. I guess I have no one else to share this with.
I'll talk about anime from time to time, opinions or interesting facts, whatever I feel like, and I will try to keep it spoiler free if possible. If anyone is interested, I don't mind doing an ask game or something on anime.
