On Valentine's Day 2018, Cruz, a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, walked into the three-story building and started shooting indiscriminately. Cruz's defense attorneys had argued that the killer's traumatic and dysfunctional childhood was a mitigating factor in the massacre. Cruz, now 24, was born to an alcoholic and alcoholic prostitute and adopted as a child by a Florida couple. While his adoptive parents, Lynda and Roger Cruz, provided a stable environment for the child, his lawyers argued that the damage had already been done. Cruz said he studied the methods used in similar incidents, including the Columbine massacre and Virginia Tech, before carrying out his plot. He told the doctor that he had planned his attack in detail, calculated the police response times, selected his firearms and planned an escape from the scene. Prosecutors devoted most of their cases to showing the extent of the atrocities and their impact on the families of the victims. A procession of traumatized survivors and relatives of the dead entered the stands to report on the horror of the mass shooting and its aftermath. On several occasions, members of the courtroom fled the courtroom in tears during particularly rude testimony. Cruz often spoke to his lawyers during the trial, often burying his head in his hands as witnesses described the murders in heartbreaking detail.
