Some critic had some harsh words for the movie calling it subpar. It is a good movie. Very clever kind of western. Atypical in some ways. Ambiguous morality. It's a little like True Grit, but a curious character personality you don't see in westerns.

It's Nicolas Cage's first western. He should do another.

TRIVIA:

The armorer on the shoot was Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was blamed for a number of unsafe activities by the assistant director and Cage and was nearly thrown off the set. She was the armorer on Rust (which was shot after The Old Way in 2021) and is being investigated for the death of Halyna Hutchins and injury to Joel Souza on that set due to unsafe firearm handling.

After the second time in 3 days of Gutierrez-Reed testing a weapon near everyone else unexpectedly, Cage yelled -- "Make an announcement, you just blew my fucking eardrums out!" Then, he stormed off.

The Old Way (2023) Review

How is it that Nicolas Cage has starred in way over 100 films, and yet The Old Way is his very first western? That just doesn’t seem right. Heck, better late than never. Time to see Cage be a cowboy!

Plot: Retired gunslinger Colton Briggs faces the consequences of his past when the son of a man he murdered arrives to take his revenge. Briggs must take up arms once more after his wife is killed, and is joined by his young daughter.

Okay, maybe there isn’t that much to be excited about. On paper Cage being a western gunslinger sounds like a match made in heaven, and honestly for his first western I expected him to come out with a bang, however The Old Way ends up being just okay. It’s a generic revenge tale that is highly predictable and ends up exactly where you expect it to. I don’t know, I was hoping for something a bit more mad, especially with Cage’s involvement. Heck, in the movie’s opening sequence Nicolas Cage is introduced with a sprawling Poirot-like moustache, and immediately I assumed that I am in for something ridiculous. However following that scene the movie cuts to 20 years later, and with that both the moustache and the hope for something exciting or weird is diminished to singular unseen atoms. Look, I am aware that Quentin Tarantino isn’t involved in this production so I hardly have the right to expect another Django Unchained or The Hateful Eight! That being said, in my mind now I really wish that I lived in an alternate universe where Nicolas Cage appeared in Django Unchained, as I imagine both the craziness of that movie and Cage’s mad sensibilities would have been a dream come true for any movie buff. That being said Tarantino still has one promised movie left in him, so let’s make it a western and have Nic Cage star in it. Deal? Deal.

As aforementioned, The Old Way is really predictable and feels all too familiar. So familiar in fact that is feels like a cheaper cousin to a certain other very famous western - True Grit. In fact, no, it literally is True Grit. There’s a father-daughter relationship and they are on a quest to find revenge by killing the outlaws that wronged them. The girl in this movie even reminded me a lot of Hailee Steinfeld in the 2010 True Grit remake, with her breezy precociousness towards everything. To be fair I’ll even say that the girl (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) does actually show some promising acting ability, and the scenes between her and Cage are the strongest in the whole film. As for Cage, is it me or were there some scheduling conflicts? For he’s in the movie, but not actually that much, as if the script had to be accommodated to his availability, and so instead we spend more time with the baddies - these for four bandits who were in no way interesting. And when Cage is actually in the movie, even he felt more reserved than usual, speaking out the film’s dialogue in blunt dull form as if he’s as bored as we in the audience are. Again, I am very much a Nicolas Cage fan, but even I had to admit he was pretty wooden in this one.

The Old Way had one job - to give us Nicolas Cage as a cowboy. And yes, technically it achieved that, however in such boring form, and to be fair Cage doesn’t even get to enjoy much gunslinging in this one. Luckily even though The Old Way is Cage’s first western film, he’s actually also filmed another quickly after this one called Butcher’s Crossing for which he apparently shaved all his hair off and gone bold, and such dedication means that the actor has probably seen more promise in that one? Perhaps that one will be better. Perhaps it will be madder. And perhaps I shouldn’t expect every western to be like a Tarantino movie.

Le Clan Noé ou Noah :

Face à un univers sombre, lugubre, ténébreux, l'auteur devait trouver des personnages aux physiques et aux caractères qui correspondent avec précision à ce contexte. Le Comte Millénaire sous ses premiers traits ne symbolise pas cette idée. Son large sourire, et ces vêtements pittoresques font de lui un personnage fantaisiste. Cependant très vite cette illusion du gros bonhomme sympathique aux premiers abords, au chapeau changeant constamment disparaît et laisse place à un être maléfique dont les intentions de conquête sont évidentes.

Partie intégrante de l'histoire de D.Gray-man, cette famille est en fait composée des descendants de Noé ( Noah en anglais ), qui fût le seul survivant lors du premier déluge de la bible.

Choisis à la naissance, les Noah se réveillent peu à peu pour prendre enfin leur réelle apparence. On les reconnait surtout aux croix sur leur front, et à leur teint de peau qui penche vers le gris.

Dans le chapitre 157, on assiste à un bal dans lequel les Noah les plus connus de la série ( Tyki Mykk, Road Kamelot, ... ) sont présents, presque en tant que personnalité très importante ... le mystère sur cette famille, et leurs réelles envies restent toujours secrètes ...

Je commence les présentation avec le 1er Apôtre : Adam

Nom : Sennen Hakushaku ( Comte Millénaire ) .

Âge : plus de 7 000 ans

Le Comte Millénaire, appelé Prince Millénaire par les membres du clan Noé, est le grand méchant de l'histoire. Son pouvoir est redoutable, malgré une apparence de clown ou de gobelin. Il y a 7 000 ans, il voulut détruire la Terre et la race humaine, mais les religieux l'en empêchèrent et ce fut la destruction du monde, appelé le Déluge, décrit dans l'Ancien Testament. Il promit alors de se venger.

À présent, il est de retour et créé des Akuma (âme déchue revêtant l'enveloppe du corps d'un mort), qui pullulent sur les cinq continents. Il est à la recherche du « cœur précieux », source de la puissance des Innocences, afin de le détruire ( en le détruisant il peut détruire toute les innocences ). Il est toujours en possession de son parapluie magique, Lero. C'est un personnage très paternel avec les membres de la famille Noah, mais aussi très ambitieux et autoritaire, affichant toujours une certaine dose d'humour et de bonne humeur.

Le physique du Comte cache sa personnalité psychopathe et haineuse envers les humains, puisque son visage est couvert à plus de 3/4 d'un énorme sourire à pleines dents. Seuls ses petits yeux cachés par ses lunettes et des zones d'ombre sont particulièrement mauvais et cruels. Il semble beaucoup aimer changer de haut de forme ou les décorer de diverses manières.

Le Comte Millénaire possède un parapluie rose parlant et doté d'une tête de citrouille nommé Lero. Road l'emprunte souvent pour embêter le Comte. Il peut voler et il déteste voir l'attirance que Road a pour Allen Walker. Il répète son nom à la fin de chacune de ses phrases .

RETROSPETIVE III ARGON RECORDS & WAR SERIES Nick Argon

Pour ce troisième numéro, nous allons nous intéresser à Argon Records, un label américain créé par Nick Argon, puis à War Series : pour qui le passé est plus trouble… Argon et son sous-label Xenon trouvent leurs origines à San Francisco en 1990 ; à l’époque ils sortent des vinyles Drum&Bass de manière sporadique jusqu’en 2003. Après une pause de quelques années Nick Argon découvre le dubstep via son frère et un ami d’enfance que l’on connaît sous le nom de Matty G, c’est le début d’une belle aventure pour Argon.

Ce changement de cap brutal s’effectue en 2006, une période où le Dubstep connaît alors son âge d’or en terme de créativité ( premier album de Skream, Anti War Dub de DMZ, Dubstep Warz sur BBC Radio 1, … ), néanmoins les artistes phares de l’époque ( Vex’d, Loefah, Kode9, … ) sont tous anglais et se connaissent tous, c’est donc une vague d’air pur qu’apporte Nick Argon au Dubstep en donnant leur chance à des artistes américains tels que Matty G, Uncle Sam, Babylon System, Noah D, etc qui pour la plupart signent leur première release et apportent avec eux une nouvelle vision du genre remplie d’influences Reggae, Dub, Ambient et Hip-Hop.

La réussite du label tient également au fait que le dubstep commence lentement à arriver aux USA mais que les Dj se font encore attendre ! En effet si à New York les soirées Dub War peuvent se permettre de ramener les plus gros noms de la scène directement d’Angleterre, de l’autre côté du pays les soirées SMOG sont face à un problème de taille : le public est présent mais il n’y a personne à faire jouer.

Matty G et Nick Argon – qui est également un Dj de talent – feront partie de ces artistes à jouer du Dubstep pour la première fois à Los Angeles et promouvant ainsi de la meilleure des manières le label. Après 21 ans d’existence et ses 5 dernières années le faisant rentrer dans l’histoire, Argon finira par s’éteindre sans explications et laissera derrière lui des classiques comme 50,000W / Loefah Remix (et 50Kw VIP) ou Under The Dancing Feet de Clouds & Tiiu.

Intéressons nous maintenant à War Series. La raison ici de parler de ce label mythique vient du fait que si le propriétaire n’a jamais été officiellement dévoilé, de nombreux indices portent à croire qu’il ne serait autre que Nick Argon.

Créé en 2007, War Series avait pour particularité de ne sortir que des remixes Dubstep de grands classiques du Reggae et de la dub, le tout pressé à 500 exemplaires sur des 12″ vierges. Au fil des années les artistes se sont révélés petit à petit et l’on retrouve une participation importante de Matty G, Dj Madd, ainsi que J:Kenzo, Noah D, Dutty Ranks et Roommate. Artistes qui ont tous signés sur Argon Rec ( à l’exception de Dj Madd ).

Si la qualité des releases est parfois discutable (ceux de Matty G sont incontournables), il reste néanmoins le précurseur de nombreux labels actuels comme Lion Charge, Whodem, Ruffcut, Roots’n’Future ou plus récemment la série X de Innamind qui à leur tour se concentrent sur des tracks à mi-chemin entre la dub et le dubstep et qui remettent le vinyl au premier plan.

Arrêté en 2010, War Series laissera 19 sorties derrière lui dont certaines se vendent encore aujourd’hui à prix d’or.

Noah Le Gros from 1883 (a spin off of Yellowstone) does music including co-writing and playing guitar on this Sohn track which is on 4AD for the indie cred they all want. His dad was in Singles but he looks so happy playing the guitar so I wouldn't want to bring him down by calling him a nepo baby.
