The Start of Something Interesting

How do I put this... I've been able to make websites for about 5 years now. After high school I went into a web design program where I learned about all kinds of great things you can do with Adobe software. We learned a bit of HTML but the program was primarily for people looking to design websites other people would be making, which is why I followed it up with a few courses in PHP, JavaScript, etc. By the end of that year and a half I had gathered all the necessary skills to make a vaguely decent website, which I've been doing over and over again ever since.

I've found that the basic function that "expertise" brings with it is basically a casual confidence; this point was driven home last week when I was giving a guitar lesson and realized that so much of my "skill" is basically just a lack of fear that I'll break the guitar. This is true with web development: the biggest thing that gets in people's way when attempting to make a website is their own fear that they'll do irrepairable damage to something, somehow. The point I'm leading up to is that I've been working on nobokeh.com for a while now, and am honestly just proud of myself for how quickly I was able to take a random notion and convert it into a... thing. Y'know? Like... I didn't stop to admire the whole thought process of "I like these kinds of photos --> it's really hard to find them --> this domain name is available --> I should make a website that showcases these kinds of photos --> it should be a tumblr so it's easy to manage and easy for people to proliferate the photos among their other networks --> it is done." That entire process would have been impossible 6 years ago not only because I wouldn't have been able to make a website of any kind, but because tumblr didn't even exist (or if it did, it wasn't what it is today). This speaks not only to my ability to make the thing, but to my own confidence with the tools available to me. Tumblr is relatively new but I knew to use it where someone else might not have considered it due to... who knows? If I could tell my 15 year old self about the process of making Nobokeh.com I know he'd be pleased. Which isn't to say it ISN'T a random, largely-pointless project--that's the whole point.

Nobokeh.com update

So last week I mentioned that I had purchased the domain nobokeh.com as I was discovering my interest in "bokeh-less" photography; to be honest I was surprised it was available.

I've been addicted to buying domains for a long time, usually keeping around 20 in a rotating queue that are just... interesting names that I might use someday. I actually think the same kind of thing happens to people that get tattoos, in that once you've gotten your first tattoo you're more likely to get your second; the same thing happens after you've bought your first domain--suddenly you find yourself constantly thinking about all the domains you could buy.

Or more accurately, whenever you visit a domain that nobody is using you're filled with the uncontrollable urge to buy it.

Anyway: I own nobokeh.com and have been wondering what to do with it. Considering my interest in bokeh-less photography and how few places exist for other psychopaths like me to come together online and talk about our heresy, it seems like the best thing to do would be to try and make a website "for" us. I don't want to put that much effort into it though, so I've decided to just make a simple tumblr that will present a new bokeh-less photo every day WITH ATTRIBUTION!!! The worst trend on tumblr is the constant proliferation of people's creative works without proper credit, so in the interest of actually supporting the photographers that are producing these photographs, I'll make sure to include not only the author's information but a link back to their flickr account (or whatever account) so you can find more photos by them if you want to. Maybe the site will become popular enough to get two questions; maybe someone will reblog one of the photos. Who knows. Maybe I'll abandon it after a few weeks (never!). Go check it out! Nobokeh.com!
