Maximizing Revenue for Nonprofit Events: Effective Strategies for Ticket Sales
Tumblr media
Nonprofit events play a crucial role in raising funds and engaging supporters. To ensure the success of these events, maximizing revenue through effective ticket sales strategies is essential. One key element that can greatly support nonprofits in their ticketing endeavors is leveraging the right event ticketing platform designed specifically for nonprofit organizations.
In this article, we will explore key strategies and actionable tips to help nonprofit organizations optimize their ticket sales and increase revenue to support their mission.
Setting Clear Goals: Define specific revenue goals for your nonprofit event to establish a target to work towards. Consider factors such as event expenses, fundraising objectives, and attendee capacity to determine the number of tickets that need to be sold to achieve your financial targets.
Early Bird and Tiered Pricing: Implement an early bird pricing strategy to incentivize early registrations. Offer discounted ticket rates to encourage attendees to commit early, boosting cash flow and generating buzz around the event. Additionally, consider implementing tiered pricing to reward early purchasers and gradually increase prices closer to the event date.
Sponsorship Packages with Tickets: Leverage sponsorships to enhance revenue generation. Create attractive sponsorship packages that include event tickets, offering sponsors an opportunity to support the cause while enjoying the event. Collaborate with local businesses or corporations that align with your organization's mission to secure valuable partnerships.
Strategic Marketing and Promotion: Craft a compelling marketing campaign to generate excitement and drive ticket sales. Utilize various channels such as social media, email newsletters, and press releases to reach a wider audience. Highlight the unique aspects of the event, such as guest speakers, special performances, or exclusive experiences, to capture attention and entice potential attendees.
Peer-to-Peer Fundraising: Empower your supporters to become ambassadors for your event through peer-to-peer fundraising. Encourage attendees to create personal fundraising pages and share them with their networks, effectively expanding your reach and increasing the chances of ticket sales.
Collaboration with Community Influencers: Partner with local influencers or community leaders who are passionate about your cause. Engage them as event ambassadors to help spread the word and promote ticket sales through their networks. Their endorsement and involvement can significantly impact ticket sales and overall event success.
Data Analysis and Iterative Improvements: Leverage ticketing platforms that provide robust analytics and reporting features. Analyze data on ticket sales, conversion rates, and attendee demographics to identify patterns and insights. Use this information to make data-driven decisions and continuously refine your ticket sales strategies for future events.
Conclusion:
Maximizing revenue for nonprofit events requires a well-thought-out ticket sales strategy. By setting clear goals, implementing early bird pricing, leveraging sponsorships, strategic marketing, and harnessing the power of peer-to-peer fundraising, nonprofits can boost ticket sales and generate increased revenue to support their mission. Continuous analysis of data and collaboration with community influencers further enhances the effectiveness of these strategies. By following these proven techniques, nonprofits can ensure successful ticket sales and create memorable events that leave a lasting impact on their cause.

olivia just revealed her own initiative, 'fund 4 good', is a part of the Guts tour. The initiative 'helps support all women/girls seeking reproductive health freedom and the fund will directly support community-based nonprofits that champion things like girl's education, reproductive rights and prevent gender-based violence'. A portion of all the ticket sales from the tour are going towards the fund and for the North American leg specifically, she's partnering with the National Network of Abortion Funds 'to help those impacted by healthcare barriers and get the reproductive health care they deserve'.
this is what you do when you're gifted with a platform.

Many people think that the reason proshots are not filmed more often is because producers are unreasonably paranoid that they will cannibalize ticket sales, but while that seems to have some truth to it, I have learned there is a bit more too it than that.
Here are some of the other primary reasons why proshots are not filmed more often:
They cost a lot of money to make. The Hamilton proshot cost around $10 million to make, which is almost how much it cost to produce the actual show. I don't know if every proshot costs quite that much, but seeing as most Broadway shows lose money and most producers are in it to make a profit, most producers are unwilling to spend an extra sum on a proshot unless it is a big hit. Normally when proshots do get filmed on Broadway it is because PBS or some other distributor is willing to pay for it.
Salaries and residuals. There are no standard contracts detailing how cast and crew are paid for proshots, so each proshot requires new negotiations between the producers and the unions detailing how much everyone gets paid, and as we all know after the recent actors and writers' strikes, negotiations are fraught and can easily fall apart. Proshots involve both film and stage unions, making everything more complex as well.
So why are there so many proshots from London?
It is partially because it is significantly cheaper to film things outside the US (actors get paid less in the UK and unions there are comparatively weak) and partially because the UK has government-funded nonprofit theatres where many of these proshots are filmed, while the US does not have any such institutions.
Can't the New York Public Library release it's archival footages to the public?
That would require them to pay residuals and royalties. It would be a gargantuan task for the NYPL to track down everyone involved in every Broadway show and get them to sign contracts. These footages are also not of a terribly good quality but I know we're too desperate to care about that.
In short, there are various reasons why proshots are not more common, and they are generally still because Broadway producers care more for money than art.

01 - Taylor Swift
No one in the music industry wielded more power over the past year than Taylor Swift, who made history at stadiums, movie theaters and on the Billboard charts, leaving even the most seasoned executives speechless. While they’d long celebrated her staggering popularity as a singer, songwriter and performer, her force as a strategic business leader suddenly came into sharper focus — and industry veterans took notes as they watched some of her bravest and most innovative business risks reap remarkable rewards.
At 34, she is one of the music industry’s most charismatic and influential leaders — and she rewrites the rules.
“The piece of advice I would give to the other executives on this list is that the best ideas are usually ones without industry precedent,” Swift tells Billboard. “The biggest crossroads moments of my career came down to sticking to my instincts when my ideas were looked at with skepticism. When someone says to me, ‘But that has never been done successfully before,’ it fires me up. We have to take strategic risks every day in this industry, but every once in a while, you have to really trust your gut and take a flying leap. My rerecordings are my favorite example of this, and I’m extremely grateful to my team and fans for taking that leap with me because it absolutely changed my life.”
Sage advice for an industry in which instinct has largely been supplanted by metrics and data analysis.
In December, Time named Swift its 2023 Person of the Year. In September, after encouraging her 279 million Instagram followers to vote and linking to vote.org, the nonpartisan nonprofit said it received over 35,000 registrations. She appears on the cover of this issue of Billboard and in the No. 1 spot of our annual Power 100 issue because her force across the business of music is now unparalleled — and because she models commitment to innovation that the rest of the business will need in order to tackle the big challenges ahead.
Swift’s gambles have paid off handsomely over the past year.
Her massive The Eras stadium tour, which began in March after she controversially put all the tickets on sale at once, crashing Ticketmaster and sparking mass hysteria, grossed an estimated $906.1 million in 2023 and is poised to become the highest-grossing global tour of all time before it wraps in December, according to Billboard.
The Golden Globe-nominated Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour film, taped during her six-show run at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., in August, has grossed over $261.6 million worldwide since its October opening, according to AMC Theatres Entertainment. In January, the publicly traded movie-house chain announced that the film’s box-office take made it the highest-grossing concert/documentary picture ever released, surpassing Michael Jackson’s 2009 This Is It. Once again blazing a new path, Swift made a groundbreaking distribution deal directly with AMC Theaters instead of linking with a film studio.
Swift has shaken up the catalog market, too. When Scooter Braun infuriated her by acquiring the master recordings of her first six albums through his Ithaca Holdings and then sold them to investment firm Shamrock Capital at a profit, Swift rerecorded the albums with loving precision and added bonus tracks to the new releases. They performed phenomenally well, as she deftly used her tour to promote them. When her latest rerecording (and 14th studio album overall), 1989 (Taylor’s Version), spent its fifth week at atop the Billboard 200 at the end of 2023, Swift beat Elvis Presley’s record for the most weeks at No. 1 by a solo artist. Her industry market share last year was 1.72%. If she were her own genre, she’d rank ninth for 2023 — bigger than jazz.
“She’s the smartest artist I’ve ever worked with,” says Messina Touring Group’s Louis Messina, who promotes Swift’s tours and has worked with her since 2005. “She outworks everybody and she has always had this vision. If you’re around her, you can’t help but believe in her.” —Melinda Newman

"An excerpt from Lauren’s Diary… 'There is so much more going on here than we realize. I do think humanity is losing touch with itself and their relationship with their surroundings... Unfortunately, it usually takes a huge trauma to get people to realize what is important, and I feel that is what is going to happen… I am not afraid of death, for it is only a transition. For, in the end, all there is is love.' - Susan Dewitt, Epilogue Scene "I WALK WITH EACH OF YOU"

This June, approximately 150 motorcycles will thunder down Route 9W in Saugerties, New York, for Ryan’s Ride for Recovery. Organized by Vince Kelder and his family, the barbecue and raffle will raise money to support their sober-living facility and honor their son who tragically died from a heroin overdose in 2015 after a years-long drug addiction.
The Kelders established Raising Your Awareness about Narcotics (RYAN) to help others struggling with substance-use disorder. For years, the organization has relied on Eventbrite, an event management and ticketing website, to arrange its events. This year, however, alongside listings for Ryan’s Ride and other addiction recovery events, Eventbrite surfaced listings peddling illegal sales of prescription drugs like Xanax, Valium, and oxycodone.
“It’s criminal,” Vince Kelder says. “They’re preying on people trying to get their lives back together.”
Eventbrite prohibits listings dedicated to selling illegal substances on its platform. It’s one of the 16 categories of content the company’s policies restrict its users from posting. But a WIRED investigation found more than 7,400 events published on the platform that appeared to violate one or more of these terms.
Among these listings were pages claiming to sell fentanyl powder “without a prescription,” accounts pushing the sale of Social Security numbers, and pages offering a “wild night with independent escorts” in India. Some linked to sites offering such wares as Gmail accounts, Google reviews (positive and negative), and TikTok and Instagram likes and followers, among other services.
At least 64 of the event listings advertising drugs included links to online pharmacies that the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy have flagged as untrustworthy or unsafe. Amanda Hils, a spokesperson for the US Food and Drug Administration, says the agency does not comment on individual cases without a thorough review, but broadly some online pharmacies that appear to look legitimate may be “operating illegally and selling medicines that can be dangerous or even deadly.”
Eventbrite didn’t just publish these user-generated event listings; its algorithms appeared to actively recommend them to people through simple search queries or in “related events”—a section at the bottom of an event’s page showing users similar events they might be interested in. As well as posts selling illegal prescription drugs in search results appearing next to the RYAN event, a search for “opioid” in the United States showed Eventbrite’s recommendation algorithm suggesting a conference for opioid treatment practitioners between two listings for ordering oxycodone.
Robin Pugh, the executive director of nonprofit cybercrime fighting organization Intelligence for Good, which first alerted WIRED to some of the listings, says it is quick and easy to identify the illicit posts on Eventbrite and that other websites that allow “user-generated content” are also plagued by scammers uploading posts in similar ways.
“I’m confident Eventbrite does not want to be hosting this on their platform—I’m pretty sure that that is not what they had in mind,” Pugh says. “It shows that a lot of the platforms that haven’t traditionally thought of themselves as being part of the threatscape have no idea how to monitor the content on their platform.”
“Listings like these do not have a home on Eventbrite,” Chris Adams, the company’s head of platform product, tells WIRED in a statement. “This is a spam attack, coordinated by a few bad actors attempting to draw audiences to third-party sites.” Adams says Eventbrite is taking the issue “very seriously” and the “identified illegal and illicit activity has been removed.”
Eventbrite’s help center says it uses a “combination of tools and processes” to detect content that goes against its rules. These include, its pages say, using machine learning to proactively detect content, a “rules-based” system, responding to reports from users, and human reviews.
“Our investigation determined this is abnormal activity, a misuse of the Eventbrite platform, and based on our findings, Eventbrite did not profit from these listings, and there have been no finalized ticket purchases identified,” Adams says.
Eventbrite appears to have removed most, if not all, of the illicit listings that WIRED identified after we alerted the company to the issue. Because of the way WIRED collected the data, however, the thousands of listings found on Eventbrite are likely the tip of the iceberg. WIRED obtained the data used for its analysis by collecting listings Eventbrite deemed were “related” to hundreds of events found through simple keyword searches. These keyword searches and their related events likely do not capture the entirety of illicit events published on the platform.
Even within this limited dataset, our analysis found that, on average, 169 illicit events have been published daily.
The vast majority of the listings WIRED found used common tactics, whether they pushed drugs, escort services, or online account details. The spammy pages were often listed as online “events.” The events do not actually happen but rather act as a way for those posting them to publish their activities online. Most of them were free; however, some tried to charge people to “attend” through Eventbrite. It is not clear whether anyone has paid for any of the events.
Searching for various controlled substances, such as brand-name opioids, brought up results on Eventbrite. These “events” mostly pushed people away from the platform to online pharmacy websites, which say people can buy medicines without prescriptions.
John Hertig, an associate professor at Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, says there are thousands of online pharmacies operating at any time and that the vast majority of them are illegal—with websites often selling drugs not approved by the FDA or failing to be licensed in the country where they are selling into.
“The other major issue that we see in terms of illegality is not requiring a prescription,” Hertig says. “You see a lot of this: ‘easy, hassle free, simple process, no doctor needed.’ That's illegal.” Typically accounts claiming to sell medicines through non-official platforms, such as those on Eventbrite, will not be doing so legitimately, Hertig says, and that brings risks around whether what they are selling is safe.
As well as websites, those claiming to sell illicit services on Eventbrite pushed people to chat privately on WhatsApp or Telegram. Our analysis identified as many as 60 unique Telegram accounts and 65 WhatsApp numbers in the dataset. WhatsApp spokesperson Joshua Breckman says the platform encourages users to report suspicious activity and that it will respond to valid law enforcement requests. Telegram did not respond to a request for comment.
“I use Eventbrite to show people what services I sell,” the person behind one account, going by the username Usa Best Vcc, tells WIRED in a Telegram chat. “Eventbrite helps 100% in getting my services to people.” The account, which claims to sell social media accounts and banking accounts and lists more than a dozen apps, has had its Telegram handle listed on more than 200 Eventbrite pages, according to search engine results. It also has its own website, Gmail address, Skype, and WhatsApp accounts.
Similarly, one Indian WhatsApp number appeared on 123 almost identical listings on Eventbrite. The telephone number is linked to two other numbers and a website that appears to offer escort services. All three numbers replied to messages and asked what “area” or “location” a WIRED reporter was in. One number sent a series of photographs of women and a proposed list of prices for their services.
Those behind the accounts posting to Eventbrite likely have not just singled out the platform; many also have presences across other websites and services where people can upload their own content. They often include short summaries, which are filled with keywords that could help them appear higher in search results.
For instance, the Usa Best Vcc seller also has posts on Pinterest, Medium, Deviant Art, and more. The Indian WhatsApp number also appears on hiking website AllTrails, an open data website from Public Health Scotland, Medium, and others. Pinterest spokesperson Ivy Choi says the company deleted the account and works quickly to remove content that violates its policies when it detects them. AllTrails declined to comment, and other organizations did not respond to a request for comment.
“Any site that allows a user to upload their own content will find these cyber criminals advertising, scamming, or using the site for their personal gain,” says Rachel Tobac, the cofounder and CEO of SocialProof security. “Cybercriminals leverage the power of user-generated content (their own drug advertisement) to sell to folks who are searching for what they have to sell.”
Pugh, from Intelligence for Good, says those uploading the posts to multiple platforms may be using automated tools to do so, and they are not manually entering all their details time and time again. “You definitely can see a difference in some of the more sophisticated actors who have clearly used some SEO-manipulation tools,” Pugh says. Some, she says, will use emoji or slang terms to avoid automatic content moderation that platforms put in place.
“Any platform that is inviting their user community to host freely has to be aware that their platform can be used for reasons that were never intended,” Pugh adds. “If you're putting a platform out there and inviting the community to participate, you have a responsibility to keep it safe.”

Take this with a grain of salt, maybe, because I loved (and still love) playing the heel in hockey and in softball.
But the wildest part to me about Korbin Albert making the Olympic roster is Hayes saying that the booing and criticism got to her, it impacted her performance, and they're still rolling with her.
The best ability in sports is availability. Number two and three are a short memory and a thick skin. You're going to get booed. Your opponents are going to boo you when you do well. Your own fans are going to boo you when you do poorly.
And I'm saying this as my own harshest critic. I'm the girl in the locker room throwing my gear on the floor and cursing myself out after a bad showing. My coaches knew better than to tell me good try so I wouldn't snap at them that, if it were actually a good try, we would have won. I cannot imagine letting the crowds get to me on top of that.
It's one thing, as we've observed time and again, to sell your soul and take on a player with a nasty personality who at least has a proven track record in the game. As far as I'm concerned, Patrick Kane and Jake Virtanen can both go to hell. But between the two of them, GMs are more willing to take the heat on the point-per-game guy than the guy with more PIM than points in Russia.
Professional-league teams have to balance winning games with keeping fan vibes high. It was the right choice for the White Sox (a phrase you will never hear me say again until Jerry sells the team) to cut Liam Hendriks, knowing he wouldn't pitch for them again, but getting rid of the guy who just came back from cancer? Terrible vibes. National teams don't have the same vibes requirements because those governing bodies are nonprofits that don't rely on private funding (and even if they did, they're making way more on youth participation than on jersey and ticket sales). But I still don't get taking the vibes to make the team worse.

In the days leading up to the Oct. 20 release of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, The Lyric cinema in Fort Collins, Colorado, fielded some unusual calls from customers. They all wanted to know if the Western crime epic, which runs three hours and 26 minutes, would have an intermission. And, if not, could one be added?
The art house cinema obliged and inserted an eight-minute break. It wasn’t long before a customer’s photo of an ad highlighting the intermission went viral and The Lyric received a call from Paramount, which is distributing the film, saying it had violated the booking contract and fines could be levied. “We didn’t know we had done anything wrong,” says Lyric manager Aaron Varnell, who recently added “chaos cultivator” to his title in a nod to challenging times.
In Long Beach, California, the Art Theatre — a single-screen theater built in 1925 — likewise hoped an intermission would lure more customers to see Killers of the Flower Moon on the big screen, versus waiting 45 days to watch it on Apple TV+. “Our thinking was, we can really make this an event,” says Kerstin Kansteiner, who heads the board of the nonprofit theater. “It gives folks the opportunity to use the restroom, and it could also make for extra concession sales, which is literally how we pay our bills these days.”
The idea was abandoned when the Art’s film booker reached out to Paramount before the film opened and was told an intermission wasn’t allowed. “It was disappointing,” says Kansteiner. “We understand that directors have a vision and don’t want to take the viewer out of the film, but it’s problematic if you make a film that’s three hours and 26 minutes long.” Because the Art has only one screen, the second evening showing didn’t begin until around 9 p.m., with the daunting prospect of a 12:30 a.m. finish.
Cinemas that survived the pandemic are still trying to find their footing during the streaming boom; as much as 15 percent of the moviegoing population hasn’t yet returned to theaters, according to data collected by Hollywood studios. This applies especially to older adults, the target audience for Killers of the Flower Moon and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which runs three hours. These longer films mean fewer showtimes, too, which compounds concerns for cinemas when it comes to ticket sales.
According to the film website What to Watch, the average length of the top 10 movies in 2022 was two hours and 21 minutes, compared to one hour and 50 minutes in 1981. While it’s true that three of the four top-grossing movies of all time at the global box office — Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water and Titanic — run longer than three hours, Vue Cinemas head Tim Richards says that doesn’t mean customers shouldn’t have options.
So Richards engineered a test in which Vue offered its U.K. customers the choice to see Killers of the Flower Moon in one interrupted viewing or with a 15-minute intermission (in Europe they’re known as “intervals” or “comfort breaks”).
“Scorsese is one of the greatest directors of all time, with an extraordinary film, and we didn’t want to alienate any of our customers because of the running time. It is the first time we’ve had an interval in decades,” Richards says. “Right off the bat, 30 percent of our customers chose to watch the movie with an interval even if it meant staying longer. And 85 percent said they would absolutely come back and watch a movie with an interval.” Vue was also asked to cease the breaks, but no fines were issued. (Scorsese, Apple and Paramount haven’t commented since the cinemas were asked to end intermissions.)
Late last year, some theaters had reached out about including an intermission with 20th Century’s Avatar: The Way of Water (three hours and 12 minutes) and said they were told no per the wishes of James Cameron, according to exhibition sources. “Imagine being immersed in the world of Avatar and having a sudden break. It would be hard to get back into the movie,” says one Hollywood studio executive not affiliated with the film. “But I get the frustration with these longer movies on the part of exhibitors.”
Richards and the other cinema operators THR spoke with say any film longer than two hours and 30 minutes might benefit from a break. That would include a slew of recent titles, including Ridley Scott’s new epic, Napoleon.
There’s evidence to back up the theory that intermissions could boost grosses for all involved. The Lyric saw a bigger turnout than usual on the second weekend of Killers of the Flower Moon — before word got out there were no more breaks during the film. Adds Varnell, “People said after, ‘I just kept waiting for the intermission. I really needed to pee.’”

God I wish I were good, or even mediocre at math, anything but completely incompetent. Somehow I have to get up, get out last semester's ticket sales spreadsheet for the nonprofit I volunteer for, and reverse-engineer the formulas for how everybody gets paid (the speaker, the venue, the branch director, the org). It always seemed so simple on paper--
for instance the venue gets 50% of ticket sales, and every ticket is $X, so just (# tickets x $X) / 2. But after every event I'd do the math With a calculator, even if I didn't think I needed it, and the executive director would Always tell me I was off by a couple of bucks, then she'd just feed me the correct totals without explanation. Which just made no sense to me. I asked her about her figures, and I got this kind of rambling email I couldn't follow that didn't really show the math, it was very obscure and abstract and conceptual and it had what sounded like insider finance slang in it, and she said "Sorry, I'm figuring this out as I go along." And when I asked for a basic formula to plug my numbers into, she goes "Well you can just look at the end of semester spreadsheet and figure it out." And then I got the spreadsheet, and there was kind of a key with some numbers that looked sort of arbitrary to me, and then the current figures below, but no formulas either written or coded ino the cells. Just a bunch of numbers. So I spent about an hour dicking around with it, reverse-engineering a formula for how each role gets paid and figuring out the little nuances of different kinds of sales that could have resulted in my consistent miscalculation, and I THINK I got it but that is an operation I definitely shouldn't be doing alone and I have no local colleagues or coworkers to double check this with, besides which each branch is slightly different. And now the executive director is quitting, and the new person is known for being extremely tough and cranky so I really don't want to be forcing her to do this part of my job for me at every event--and then also in a recent meeting she said SHE can't do math, so that could make my own incompetence an even bigger problem. But I gotta ask her at today's meeting if she has a formula I can use, and I want to bring what I THINK is right just to show that I at least tried to sort myself out, and I'm just...not looking forward to it.
I'm thinking of pecking around for an app that's designed to help children learn math, I'm sure such things exist and I genuinely want to improve, but I'm afraid this is just the way I'm wired.
