(this is a rant based on a conversation i had yesterday, i wanted to write it down as a time capsule/diary entry type thing about where The Debate is right now. links are to stuff in swedish)

right now im super apprehensive about how the self-id/single sex spaces discussion is gonna go in sweden. a major difference between sweden and the uk is we have established women’s orgs on our side, high ups in the womens shelter movement are speaking out etc.

and im seeing how that can go in 2 different directions. as an example, recently there’s been articles and awareness about the situation for young women/teen girls in institutional care. amongst other things, sexual assault by male staff is an issue. the board says they want to fix it by “hiring more women”. the main organisation of women’s shelters demands single-sex staff, so males don’t get access to vulnerable girls.

at the same time, we have the self-id/trans debate bubbling up. this month there’s been a handful of articles and debate on the issue, but we’re waiting on the government to announce their (overdue) proposition. (So we don’t know right now if it’s full self-id or not! if i remember it correctly the most recent proposal from last year disappointed basically everyone by having all the gender-id language but wasn’t full self-id because it needed some “simplified process of confirmation”, so the self-id advocates were mad about it)

which brings me to what this post is actually about: the fork in the road where we’re at. there’s so much polarisation and so many questions that the right/nationalist side owns already, like how the drag queen story hour thing is only ever presented as a “liberal gays” vs “straight nationalist conservatives and alt righters” issue. right now, at this point in time, the media is actually talking about single sex spaces as “trans advocates” vs “(some) women’s organisations”. and that’s an important advantage imo. one that we don’t want to lose.

re: the example about the institutionalised girls: there are two ways this could go. one way is that people understand that the women’s orgs are right to demand single-sex services for vulnerable girls and women.

the other way this could go is trans activists shouting about how women aren’t actually demanding single-sex care because the girls are vulnerable, they’re just using it to be mean about trans women. and they’ll use the fact that various women’s orgs collaborate on articles to undermine them. (look, these womens orgs that we thought were reasonable work with the really terfy ones!)

Miniaturised Bluetooth 5.0 module targets the IoT

Murata has launched a Bluetooth 5.0 module based around the latest chipset from Nordic Semiconductor.

The MBN52832 module combines Nordic’s nRF52832 single chip wireless transceiver, a 32 MHz crystal for timing, and an on-board antenna. It also contains pins for an off-board omni-directional antenna and a NFC antenna.  The module provides a Serial Port Interface (SPI) and UART interface to the ARM Cortex M4 processor in Nordic’s chip.  

The module measures 7.4 x 7.0 x 0.9mm and provides BLE connectivity between tablets, cell phones, cloud services, and other proprietary functions. Nordic’s software developer's kit enables developers to create and run edge device applications that can monitor and capture diagnostic information for preventive maintenance. These features can be combined in apps for both iOS and Android devices that run BT v5.0.

The small footprint and ability to add applications means the module is aimed at OEMs wanting to develop Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Target markets include Industrial IoT, energy, and home and office automation applications such as asset tracking devices, medical insulin pumps, white goods, and other consumer goods that require connectivity.

“As the IoT rapidly rolls out, the underpinning technology is increasingly in demand — making it essential that companies launch their Bluetooth low energy IoT products quickly and cost effectively,” said Geir Langeland, Director of Sales & Marketing at Nordic Semiconductor. “Murata has taken full advantage of the nRF52832 SoC’s powerful features to offer a module that can be incorporated into compact wireless products by engineers with limited RF experience—decreasing time to market—yet can support the most demanding Bluetooth low energy IoT applications.”

Svenskar på radblr se hit!!

Den här veckan ska socialutskottet sammanträda och rösta om ifall L+M's förslag till ny könstillhörighetslag ska vidare till regeringen. Det är samma förslag som S+MP la fram innan valet, dvs det som inte är full self-id utan en "förenklad prövning" (vad nu det innebär) och 16 års åldersgräns.

Så det är nu det är dags att mejla politikerna i socialutskottet med alla våra bästa argument och om vad som är viktigt för oss. Statistik för forskning? Organisationsfrihet för separatistiska föreningar? Könsuppdelad idrott? Skyddade boenden, fängelser?

Tipsa dem också om att gå på seminarium i riksdagen på onsdag, om könstillhörighetslagen där b.l.a Sveriges Kvinnoorganisationer ska prata om hur de ser på förslaget.

This is about how the Swedish government has this list of goals for equality between men and women, and one of them is "ending male violence against women". And the government intends to do a consultation or something about whether they should change the phrasing about "male violence against women" so it "still emphasises that the violence of men and boys against women and girls is the majority of gender-based violence, it is more inclusive of women's violence against men, violence in lgbtqi relationships, as well as violence in prostitution and trafficking".

This was a sort of decent primer on the political debates that have happened so far.

The positive: - it goes through the history so far and criticisms within various political parties, and not talking about it as straightforwardly a left/right issue - the debunking of the "nothing has affected anything in other countries" argument with the example of Norway (though I think there should have been more information about the prison issue) - i liked the bit that questioned the whole premise that "separating the legal and medical aspects" is by default a good thing. more of that please The negative: - treating the LGBTQ movement as just one thing (despite the detransitioners they bring up often speak about how being bi or gay played a part) - i'm not a fan of the bit in the description about "sverigedemokrater har råkat kroka arm med kvinnoorganisationer" (though it's way better than the other way around) - still treating feminist criticisms with a bit of incredulity, I don't like that tone of "what do those women think is going to happen, really?" as though there isn't a wealth of research and news from the UK and Scotland to look into

A good review in English of an important book, also some info on the big moments of the Swedish trans debate and what might happen next.

"Sadly, a new take on the old bill has resurfaced and is taking an unorthodox route through the legislative process, to be voted on in April. The part about genital surgeries for minors has been taken out, and the age at which a person is deemed old enough to request a legal sex change has been raised to 16. It does, however, come awfully close to being just another self-ID law (with very minor extra steps). I cringe knowing how tone-deaf and ill-informed this kind of move is, just as we’re beginning to see serious opposition to the broader ideology all around us. "

Idag får vi inte gl��mma att fira våra segrar, systrar! För herregud vilken framgångsrik historia feminismen har varit de senaste sisådär 150 åren! Vi har erövrat så mycket: rösträtt, myndighet även som gift kvinna, rätt till högre utbildning, rätt till skilsmässa, rätt att vara vårdnadshavare för våra barn. Och fler generationer kvinnor fortsatte: rätt till abort, rätt till förskola.

Så är det färdigt nu? Har kvinnorörelsen varit så framgångsrik att den inte längre behövs, i alla fall inte i vårt land? Det verkar som om vissa resonerar så. I alla fall är två av de saker som det alltid har varit självklart att feminism handlar om inte längre självklara.

För det första: varför existerar överhuvudtaget feminismen? Svaret har tidigare varit: för att förbättra för gruppen kvinnor och motverka kvinnors samhälleliga underordning under män. Men det svaret är inte längre självklart. Det har blivit svårare att hävda att feminism är en teoribildning och en rörelse som fokuserar på just kvinnor, utan den ses allt oftare som en större rättviserörelse för alla underordnade grupper och inte primärt för gruppen kvinnor.

Så här skrev till exempel Elsa Kugelberg i Dagens nyheter i en runa över bell hooks: ”Feminism är ’motstånd mot förtryck’, där förtryck förstås som ’frånvaro av valmöjligheter’. De som säger sig se och kämpa mot förtryck måste börja med förtrycket där det är som starkast. En feminism värd namnet behöver koncentrera sig på samhällets mest utsatta: flyktingar, sexarbetare, hemlösa, transpersoner, funktionsnedsatta. Vad säger de? Vad skulle göra deras liv bättre, friare?”

För det andra: vi är inte längre överens om vad kön överhuvudtaget är, och därmed inte heller vad en kvinna är. Och kön har ju trots allt varit det som feminismen har byggt på eftersom patriarkatet bygger på det.

Fram till för bara något decennium sedan var vi tämligen överens om att kön är ett biologiskt faktum, man föds till flicka eller pojke. Och med det kommer en rad olika förväntningar på denna nya individ – förväntningar som vi kallar genus. Det får resultatet att flickiga pojkar och pojkaktiga flickor bestraffas. Men det får också konkreta resultat i lägre löner för kvinnor, sämre vård för den som specifikt handlar om kvinnor, såsom förlossningsvården, färre forskningsresurser till kvinnosjukdomar etcetera.

Men i och med den nya syn på kön som har växt fram inom transrättsrörelsen, och som nu till exempel RFSL står för, kan vi inte längre självklart utgå från denna syn på kön och genus. Enligt den nya teorin om kön har alla en inre könsidentitet som inte behöver sammanfalla med det biologiska kön som man har blivit, som de uttrycker det, ”tilldelad”. Vilket kön du tillhör bestämmer du själv; det beror på din egen känsla och visshet – din könsidentitet.

De här två uppfattningarna – att feminism bör vara en mer allmän kamp mot diskriminering och förtryck av alla grupper, oavsett grunden för denna diskriminering eller detta förtryck (det kan vara kön, hudfärg, kroppsfunktion, klass, sexualitet) samt uppfattningen att kön är en fråga som den enskilda individen själv bör få bestämma – gör att feminismen är förvirrad för tillfället.

Vilken är vår motståndare? Är det patriarkatet och sexismen, är det kapitalismen, rasismen, normen om heterosexualitet eller en viss uppfattning om vad kön är?

Och vilken är vår kamp? Är det en kamp för att befria oss från könsroller, en kamp mot mäns våld mot kvinnor, en kamp för lika lön för lika arbete? Eller är det en kamp mot alla former av underordning och mot en syn på kön som en fråga om biologi istället för den enskilda individens känsla? De här frågorna bör var och en av oss tänka igenom och ta ställning till.

För övrigt har jag varit i kontakt med vården på grund av en fraktur i foten. Räkningen kom igår: 300 kronor. Å, vad mycket vi får för skattepengarna!
