Two power substations in North Carolina have been attacked with high power rifles by a far right organization leaving thousands without power in the winter. Several attempts have been made against power stations in my area in the past month. The FBI has warned all infrastructure facilities across the nation from water to gas to be on high alert for potential saboteurs, vandals, arsonists, and terrorists.
That and the coup d'état plot in Germany that lead to 25 arrests yesterday have me SERIOUSLY WORRIED about the future.

Ozzy was born and raised in the community of Buxton on Hatteras Island, North Carolina, where his love for the mystery and the unknown was first nurtured. As a fishing community on an island, there are bound to be stories. Ghost ship sailors, lost colonies, and a hidden treasure by Blackbeard are only among a few of the many urban and local legends associated with Hatteras Island. It served as his escape from a troubled home life, with an abusive father and an absent mother. The only thing he knew of his mother was that she came from a small town in Texas.
When Ozzy turned eighteen, he left home— stealing his father’s old and beat-up Ford F-150 along with a few bucks— and moved two states over to enter a trade school and train as a handyman. However contemptible of a father he might’ve been, Ozzy still learned a thing or two from him, having grown up watching his dad fix things. From an early age, he had been the tool fetcher for the odd jobs his father took to the house. This sparked his interest in fixing things and became another outlet for his frustrations.
After Ozzy’s training, he set a course to the West, intending to meet his mother. When he arrived in Babylon around a year ago, the first thing he did was to ask about her whereabouts but to his dismay, no one has even heard of her, as if she never existed. Was his father lying? All things considered, he wouldn’t put it past him. With nowhere else to go and zero leads, he decides to stay in Babylon to investigate. He knew something was up, he just couldn’t place what it was. Besides, the place was rife with the sort of mysteries and tales that tickled the nostalgic parts of his brain. It was comforting.
Relatively new to town, Ozzy has quickly become a familiar— but not particularly trusted— face amongst the locals, an easy feat with his cheerful and helpful personality. While he might not look like the part, make no mistake because he knows his way around different tools. He advertises his business as “Mr. Quick” and his services as a handyman are sought by many and always given praise for how faithful to the name it is.
Ozzy is part of a group of four young people* that is determined to uncover the secrets in town, mainly investigating the paranormal. They’ve been using part of an abandoned site that was supposed to be a mall that never pushed through as a “covert” gathering place. Although nowadays, they’d just resort to meeting in a member’s place— Ozzy’s most of the time, being the pseudo-leader of the group. While he’s probably the least responsible out of them being a loose cannon and all, his natural charisma makes up for half of it. Besides, he was the one who initially formed their mystery gang anyway, or at least made them into a ‘thing’ and creatively (lamely) named them The Mystery Solvers. They’ve recently started a podcast that tackles the stories and legends in Babylon, making a spectacle out of it.
Although it doesn’t happen often and only when highly provoked, Ozzy has underlying anger issues and violent outbursts. It was worse when he was still in high school— often getting into fights because of it— and the tendency seems to have died down ever since he left home and his father. While he seems carefree and happy-go-lucky— and for the most part, he is— Ozzy often covers up his emotions and pain with humor.
Ozzy has a brown Great Dane dog he picked up along the way to Babylon that eerily looks like Scooby-Doo and has unoriginally (and predictably) named “Scooby.”
*This group is a wanted connection. If interested, feel free to message me!
𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐏𝐋𝐎𝐓𝐒.
I’d definitely want him to turn into a non-human in the future. If anyone wants to volunteer, please, by all means.
Not everything can remain fun and games. I can see him getting personally involved somehow in a few crime or missing cases, perhaps even getting accused in them. As a handyman, he has been to a lot of houses and has had access to them, so it’s not too far-fetched. Plus, he’s a new face in town. Always easier to blame the new guy.

The Crow (1994)
Alright Cult of Cult. Do I really need to introduce this one? Let's get all 90s and gothy and maybe brace ourselves for a bit of cringe, but like in a fun way. It's the Holy Grail of Hot Topic, 1994's the Crow Starring Brandon Lee.
Sermon
Apparently before the auto industry totally crashed Detroit was already a total fucked to death pile of burning shit, or at least that's what the crow would have you believe. Sorry Bruce Campbell, and other people from Detroit, but mostly Bruce Campbell. According to the Crow the city of Detroit is the kind of place where gangs of warlock anarchist arsonists will bomb buildings, and murder and rape whoever they feel like and then walk around bragging about it the next day with absolutely zero consequences. Funny then that if Detroit was so bad they had to go to film this movie in Wilmington North Carolina which is definitely a fucked to death pile of burning shit. I can say that, I'm from there and I got the fuck out. My brother is going to kill me if he ever reads this. (It's okay, these are all jokes people). Did you know they also filmed the Super Mario Bros movie there ... also cuz they needed a really shitty looking distopia. Moving on ...
The ludicrous criminality of the Crow's Detroit is particularly on display on Halloween. In Detroit (apparently) Halloween is known as Devils Night and it's legitimately just a night of pure lawlessness and chaos and kids aren't even safe to get candy, except later when we do see trick or treaters. Eric Draven, hunky goth rocker who sort of looks like he could be Bruce Lee's Kid and his fiance are murdered by a gang of vicious criminals. One year hence, Eric is resurrected by a mystical crow (that is actually a Raven), to exact his revenge on the gang that murdered him.
He paints his face like sad Alice Cooper and refuses to listen to Joy Division, just covers. He murders Tin Tin (a knife guy) just for his long gothy duster, he murders Fun Boy and forcibly ejects heroine from her arms and tells her "Go be a good mom now" which actually works. (have I told you about our Lord and Savior Sting? He gave me the strength to get off drugs), he blows T Bird up dick first, and then comes for Skab? Scraap? Scooby? in a meeting of all of Detroits villains and just about kills them all.
He is supported by the most 90s little girl to have ever graced the screen, and I am here for it, and Officer Albrecht, who's played by Ernie Hudson but I like to call him Zeddemore: The Most Underrated Ghostbuster. The leader of the bad guys, who I cannot beleive wasn't played by Brad Dourif or Tom Waits, is pretty interested in the occult. He keeps his witchy girlfriend around and she makes him fun dishes like smoked eyeballs, and her main use is that she knows that the Crow is the Crows weakness. They set Tony Fucking Todd on the bird, and I guess you just have to hurt the bird and not kill it, and Eric loses his healing factor and other macabre undead powers.
The Crow, Jimmy the Raven, pecks out Dr. Girlfriends eyeballs, I honestly forget how Tony Todd gets offed, and Top Dollar gets Gargoyled (that is impaled on a gargoyle). Funnily enough that is more Gargoyle related impaling on screen then in the actual movie Gargoyle: Wings of Darkness where a Gargoyle is supposed to have impaled a guy.
The Benediction
Best Feature: Injustice League
In the Crow we have not only a set of super memorable villains but they are played by the bad guy all stars. John Polito as the most lowly of the bad guys as a kind of sleazy pawn shop owner who buys ill gotten gains. Tony Todd, who's size is really on display here, the freaking Candy Man is in this movie. T Bird is the head of Top Dollars goons and is played by David Patrick Kelly, you might know as the "Warriors Come Out and Play!!" bottle guy from the Warriors, or as Jimmy Horne from Twin Peaks, and of course Top Dollar himself is played by Michael Wincott. Wincott is not a particularly celebrated actor but has played villains effectively in Robin Hood, the Three Musketeers, and Dead Man.
Best Set Piece: Detroit Style Hot Dogs
The Set design of the Crow is perhaps one of it's most fantastic features. It's very moody and ethereal. It's just real enough to not take you out of the film, but fantastic enough to set mood and theme above realism. From Eric Draven's apartment, to the church where the final battle occurs they are all fantastic. I think that's why I really wanted to shine the spot light on a very minor set piece that would get nary a mention but just as effectively represents the qualities I was just talking about and that is the Maxi Doggs Hot Dog Stand, where a lot of the films exposition for audience surrogates takes place.
Worst Effect: Freeze Frame
At a few points in the movie the film makers made a strange decision to do these freeze frame transitions. I only noticed it twice in the movie where it was particularly stupid. I'm sure the film makers at the time thought it was a moody and atmospheric choice that highlighted the suffering that Eric Draven was going through, but it didn't age well. If you don't have the sensibilities of a goth girl from 1994 then it's very very hard not to laugh at just how self involved the movie is about it's super sadness.
Worst Feature: Tragic Accident
Solely based on the film itself, it is that very gothic and dated sensibility that hurts the Crow. The little sarcastic dance he does when he flees the police, quoting Edgar Allen Poe, and bowing to Albrecht. These affected behaviors that I'm sure seemed snarky and right on to the target audience only serve to make Eric Draven seem like an unbearable neck beard edgelord and not the troubled dark soul he's supposed to be. I'm sure at the time it seemed unique and gothy but that shit went out of style for good reason, people could see through it. It's a shame that the Crow himself was some of the cringiest parts of this movie now that I'm seeing it as an adult and not a 13 year old middle class boy with no real problems.
This however is not the low point of the movie. It's not news now and if you're reading some dudes review of The Crow on Tumblr then you probably already know the story. The worst thing about The Crow is that Brandon Lee was horrifically killed on set while filming this movie due to some negligible prop malfunctions. A series of unfortunate events that lead to the actor spending 6 hours in surgery fighting for his life before eventually passing. It was not a quick or painless death and it's really impossible to watch the movie without an appreciation for the fact that this kind of fun dark adventure was going to be a vehicle for Brandon Lee's career wound up taking his life. He was 28. I really wish I could have just bitched about the goofy goth stuff and moved on, but that's not the world we live in.
Best Effect: The Gargoyling
Maybe I should have called this best kill. But I'm not sure which it is. The slaying of Top Dollar at the Climax of the film was just super effective. The pointed wings impaling his chest and that horn coming out of his mouth, it was morbid and excellent and just fit the tone of the movie perfectly. I mean how many other movies can you say Cause of Death: Impaled on a Gargoyle.
Best Bird: The Raven
I tried very hard to look up the name of the bird that primarily performed in this movie and could not find anything. There was a Raven once upon a time called Jimmy the Raven, but that was in the 50s and I don't think birds live that long. There was a team of Ravens performing as the crow, they were chosen over crows for their larger size, and more imposing silhouettes. I just think it's so wonderful to see these often maligned birds get a chance to show off their talents. Corvids of all kinds are incredibly intelligent creatures. Im a sucker for animals, if you haven't already figured that out. I really liked seeing the ravens hit their marks, particularly the one whos job it was to drop the wedding ring into Sarah's hand at the end of the film. You can see that greedy little bastard do his trick and then look of camera at his trainer like "treat please!". It's very cute.
Best Actor: Top Dollar Performance
I'd love to take this opportunity to just put praise upon Brandon Lee, he truly gave everything for this role, but unfortunately with what was put to film we actually have very few character moments with Eric Draven. Stuff happens to him, and he does killings and fights. There's definitely some personality, but I felt like I walked away knowing almost nothing about who Eric Draven was. He was clearly a good dude but that and a few hobbies and a relationship and you don't really have a character yet. He's unfortunately not given a lot of acting to do, instead just relegated to stunts and action sequences. That were notably cool.
The bad guys in the Crow have a lot more character and among this who's who of character actors, Michael Wincott takes the cake. Hell he was standing next to Candyman himself, Tony Todd and still stealing the scenes.
Best Character: A Few Good Apples
Is the best character in The Crow really going to be the cop? The commissioner Gordon stand in? yeah, it is. Not to be political, but I don't like cops, but I guess in a world with magical birds and eyeball smoking I can suspend my disbelief and let Ernie Hudson be #1 cop dad. His character is really the heart of the film, since all Eric can do is brood and fight, we have to care about someone in this movie.
Best Sequence: Halloween Party
The best sequence of the movie is of course the scene where Eric Draven busts in on the Devil's Night party planning commission. I think Top Dollar brought Scrappy Doo there just so he could lure out the crow, knowing the baddest assholes in all of Detroit would be gathered it was likely that somebody was going to kill the beast, or if they couldn't at least Top Dollar could get a feel for his enemy. It's a bullet flying action sequence with a ton of weight. I can't put my finger on this all to common weightless third act problem that big budget super hero and action flicks have nowadays, but whatever that issue is, the Crow does not have that issue. From this point on the Climax feels earned and I am invested. For that reason, The Crow is honestly better in spite of its awkwardness, than many of the super hero movies out today.
Worst Sequence: My Guitar Gently Weeps
Speaking of brooding or fighting. The best sequence was fighting, the worst is brooding. I get that Eric was in a band or something, but didn't he have shit to do. It seemed like it was a cool idea for a shot, but for like a whole seen, watching somebody play an 80s guitar solo, that stood out so brazenly from the choices of music in the rest of the movie was extra corny. It felt like someone's( dad trying to relate to their kid. Oh you like Music. The Dresden Dolls eh? Oh man, then you're going to love Slash's Snake Pit!
Summary
The Crow is dated. It is iconic but I wonder how many of the people that hang that poster on the wall have watched that movie since they were kids. It's interesting how what i've liked and disliked about this film have changed so much sense I was a kid. It's a cheeseball fiesta. If you have matured at all beyond thinking that being sad is the same as being deep then you're going to like it a little less than you did when you were younger, but it is still solid. There's not much to hate on. I'd watch it over and over again. I was really afraid it would not hold up at all, but returning to The Crow was a completely positive experience.
Overall Grade: B

johnny did not graduate high school. he was very close, but throughout middle and high school, other boys loved picking fights with the poor kid. he was constantly bullied, and since all he really had was his pride, he always fought back. by senior year, he was ready to graduate and make something of himself. it’s 3 months until graduation, and someone lights the school on fire. who else could the blame except the troubled bad boy who was constantly picking fights? he’s expelled and never gets his diploma, and he’s known as an arsonist up until he leaves town.
johnny’s mother, loretta, died before johnny turned 16. right after this, johnny’s father dev got johnny a job at the factory he worked at, but obviously johnny knew that’s not what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. his dad stops showing up for work, starts drinking. johnny is barely making enough to support them both, so he packs up, takes the car he’s been working on and leaves. he takes a bunch of low end, low paying jobs across north carolina, couch surfs, is dragged along to grungy clubs and parties filled with alcohol and sweaty people grinding against each other. that’s where johnny learns his love for dancing, and learns that he’s a natural. a friend hands him a flyer, ‘kellerman’s looking for serving staff.’ johnny took the leap of faith and went to apply. he started out as a recruiter, but was caught dancing in penny’s studio, and was quickly given an instructor job. what a great origin story, huh?’
johnny sees a clear difference between having sex and making love. the reason he slept with a bunch of the rich, older women at the resort was to keep them happy — at kellerman’s request ( meaning at any cost ). when he slept with baby for the first time, it was much different, and he could tell immediately, which is why he denied any others have their night together. i also think he hasn’t ‘made love’ a lot in his life? he’s fairly young, and that being said, i’d say he only had 2 other serious relationships involving real intimacy. the rest were literally just him trying to do what he was told so he didn’t have to go back to being a poor man.

Heroes or Murderers?
Tumblr media
Two months ago in Salem, Massachusetts, a fire fighter, Mark Verville, charged with committing arson, was sentenced to two years in a state penitentiary.  ”Why send him to prison?”, I scratched my head and asked, “Why not give him a medal instead?” After all, he did help put the fire out after he started it. Firefighters risk their lives to save us, yet when a firefighter commits arson we call him a murderer. Why don’t police get the same treatment?
On the same day In North Carolina, Charlotte Police Officers were touted as heroes for apprehending six drug cartel operatives. But police created the cartels ! Charlotte Police were merely fighting a fire they started. Before drug prohibition, drug merchants were no different than beer and wine suppliers. By imprisoning those innocent people, police put drug cartels in business. Drug cartels that survive by torturing and murdering people
Police have set our world on fire. Drugs are so expensive, users resort to theft and prostitution. Girls having to buy their drugs illegally are lured into back alleys and raped. Over eighty percent of our crime is caused by police enforcing drug laws! Every time a cop arrests someone for drugs, he produces rape victims, murder victims and robbery victims. Are they heroes for arresting the criminals they created?
If so, I demand we give firefighters the same admiration. I demand the release of Mark Verville and all other firefighting arsonists so we can present them with medals.

Joe Biden says he will announce his female running mate next week
Joe Biden on Tuesday said he would be name his female running mate next week.
The presumptive Democratic nominee joked he would have to escape the TV camera crews that are parked outside of his Wilmington, Delaware, home so he could meet his pick without being caught.
‘I’m going to try to figure out how to trick you all so we can meet in person. I’ve got crews outside my house. I don’t think it matters actually. What I said is I’m going to have a choice in the first week in August, and I promise I’ll let you know when I do,’ he said.
He gave no hint to who he might name but has previously said he would pick a woman. Biden is under pressure from different sectors of the party to pick either a black woman or a liberal.
Joe Biden said he will announce his running mate next week; he has previously vowed to pick a woman to run on the ticket with him
Joe Biden accused Donald Trump of ‘intentionally’ stoking the fires of racism
He wouldn’t say if he would interview the finalists in person and wear a mask while doing so.
‘Well, we’ll see,’ he said.
Contenders include Senators Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, and Tammy Duckworth; former national security adviser Susan Rice; Congresswomen Karen Bass and Val Demings; and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
During a short press conference, Biden also vowed to be one of the ‘most progressive presidents’ in history if elected as he accused Donald Trump of ‘intentionally’ stoking the fires of racism.
The presumptive Democratic nominee also predicted his party will win back control of the Senate this fall – a bold statement. If Democrats take the Senate while keeping the House and Trump wins re-election, Democrats would be able to block any legislation agenda out of the White House, leaving the country in gridlock.
Democrats would need to pick up three seats to control the Senate if Biden takes the White House – otherwise they would need to pick up four.
The party is feeling good about their chances in Arizona, Colorado, Maine and North Carolina where the Republican incumbents are seen as in trouble and struggling.
‘I think we are going to take back the United States Senate,’ Biden said.
Biden, who is known for his moderate political record, appealed to the party’s left flank with a vow to enact liberal policies should he win the White House.
‘If I’m elected, I’m going to be good to go down as one of the most progressive presidents in American history,’ he said.
But first he must win the White House. He leads President Trump by 9 points in the RealClearPolitics average of polls on the race. Several battleground states show him leading in the polls and Biden is making gains in traditionally red states like Texas, Arizona and Georgia.
During his remarks, Biden attacked Trump’s economic record, his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and slammed him for ‘stoking’ race relations.
‘He can’t turn the economy around and get America back to work. And he is horrifyingly and – not surprisingly – intentionally stoking the flames of division and racism in this country,’ Biden said of Trump.
He went on to attack Trump’s tough talk on protesters. Trump has said he will be a ‘law and order’ president and he has sent in federal troops to cities like Portland and Seattle to deal with the protests that have swelled up in support of the Black Lives Matters movement in the wake of the death of George Floyd.
Trump has said he is sending in the troops to protect federal property. And he has denounced protesters who have torn down statues of figures tied to the Confederacy or to slavery.
Biden denounced violent protesters but said peaceful ones must be allowed to continue.
‘I said from the outset, of the recent protest, there is no place for violence in destruction of property. Peaceful protesters should be protected and arsonists and anarchists should be prosecuted,’ he said.
‘But that wouldn’t help Trump’s political interest,’ he continued. ‘He’s determined to stoke division and chaos. It is not good for country. But Donald Trump doesn’t care. His campaign is failing and he’s looking for a political lifeline. This isn’t about law and order, it is about a political strategy to revive a failing campaign. Every instinct Trump has is to add fuel to the fire. It is the last thing, the last thing we need. We need leadership, to calm the waters and lower the temperature. That is how to restore peace in the streets.’
Democratic presidential candidate, former Vice President Joe Biden, and wife Jill Biden, pay respect to the flag-draped casket of the late Rep. John Lewis as he lies in state at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, DC
Joe Biden said he talked to  John Lewis, the longtime Democratic congressman and civil rights activists, before he died
Biden also said he spoke to John Lewis, the longtime Democratic congressman and civil rights activists, before he died. Biden and Jill Biden paid their respects to Lewis at the U.S. Capitol on Monday. Lewis died last week of pancreatic cancer.
‘I spoke to John just before he died,’ Biden said.
‘He wanted to talk. Instead of answering my concerns for him, he asked about me. He asked about us. He asked that we stay focused on the work left undone to heal this nation. To remain undaunted by the public health crisis and economic crisis, taking the blinders off in this crisis of — and show the systemic racism for what it is that plagues this nation,’ he said.
Trump and Lewis clashed during Lewis’ life time. Lewis refused to attend Trump’s January 2017 inauguration and said his presidency was not legitimate. Trump said he would not go to Capitol Hill to visit Lewis’ remains, where he is lying in state in the rotunda.
WHO’S ON BIDEN’S VP SHORTLIST
KAMALA HARRIS, 55. CALIFORNIA SENATOR
Following widespread protests over racial injustice and police brutality, pressure increased on Biden to choose a woman of color. Harris, the daughter of Jamaican and Indian parents, fits the bill.
Harris is widely viewed as a favorite to run alongside Biden. She is a battle-tested former presidential candidate and ex-prosecutor who has shown an ability to go on the attack – a valued asset for a running mate. A first-term senator from California, she has already been heavily vetted by the media and rival campaigns.
Harris endorsed Biden after dropping out of the race. But her criticism of him during a Democratic primary debate about his opposition to school busing rankled some people close to Biden, who worry about her ambition and loyalty.
SUSAN RICE, 55. FORMER NATIONAL SECURITY ADVISOR
Rice served as President Barack Obama’s national security adviser during his second term, where she worked hand in hand on foreign policy matters with Biden, who was Obama’s vice president.
Prior to that, Rice served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under Obama and has advised several other Democratic presidential candidates on national security.
A Black woman, Rice could help drive the African-American vote, the Democratic Party´s most loyal constituency. But she has never run for public office, which means she would be untested on the campaign trail. Her involvement in the controversy over the 2012 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, could revive that incident as a campaign issue.
VAL DEMINGS, 63. FLORIDA CONGRESSWOMAN
Biden has said Demings, an African-American congresswoman from the election battleground state of Florida, is on the shortlist for running mate.
The former Orlando police chief served as one of the managers of the House of Representatives’ impeachment proceedings against Republican President Donald Trump but has a lower profile among voters nationally.
Demings’ background in law enforcement and her relatively unvetted past as police chief could be viewed as risk factors to a Biden campaign that wants to appeal to progressive voters.
KAREN BASS, 66. CALIFORNIA CONGRESSWOMAN
A late addition to Biden’s shortlist, Bass, a congresswoman from Southern California and chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, would add a progressive voice to the ticket.
Bass has an extensive background in police reform efforts and has spearheaded the legislative response in the House to the killing of George Floyd by police in May. But at 66, she may not offer the prospect of generational transition that Biden wants to show.
TAMMY DUCKWORTH, 52. ILLINOIS SENATOR
Duckworth has a compelling personal story and would help bolster the campaign’s national security credentials.
The senator from Illinois is a combat veteran who lost her legs when her helicopter was shot down in Iraq in 2004. She went on to become the first woman with a disability and the first Thai-American elected to Congress. Duckworth, however, has not been on the forefront of civil justice issues like Harris, Bass and others on Biden’s list.
KEISHA LANCE BOTTOMS, 50. ATLANTA MAYOR
Bottoms is the first-term mayor of a city that has been riven by protests over Floyd’s death and the shooting of another Black man, Rayshard Brooks, by Atlanta police in June. Atlanta also has been a hot spot in the coronavirus pandemic, putting Bottoms on the front lines of the country’s two largest challenges of the moment.
While Bottoms was an early supporter of Biden, her lack of experience on the federal level may doom her chances. Biden, who would be the oldest U.S. president, has insisted his No. 2 be ready to assume the presidency at any time.
ELIZABETH WARREN, 71. MASSACHUSETTS SENATOR
Warren, has spoken with Biden regularly since dropping out of the Democratic nominating race and endorsing him. The senator from Massachusetts is seen by Biden advisers as a bridge between the former vice president and people skeptical of his commitment to progressive policy priorities.
The selection of Warren, however, could fuel allegations by the Trump campaign that Biden favors an overly leftist agenda, while potentially alienating moderate voters in battleground states that Biden is cultivating.
MICHELLE LUJAN GRISHAM, 60. NEW MEXICO GOVERNOR
Lujan Grishambecame the first Latina Democratic governor of a state in 2018, after serving six years in Congress.
Biden’s campaign has been pushed by allies to consider a running mate who could boost his support among Latino voters, potentially the largest minority voting bloc in the November election.
GRETCHEN WHITMER, 48. MICHIGAN GOVERNOR
Whitmer raised her profile as the governor of a battleground state hit hard by the coronavirus.
But she came under fire earlier this year from some Michigan residents for a stay-at-home order that they viewed as too onerous.

Anti-racism Protests Target More Statues in US
Protesters targeted more statues Saturday across the United States, amid continuing anti-racism demonstrations following the May 25 death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis.
In Seattle, authorities were investigating a shooting in the "Capitol Hill Occupied Protest" zone, or CHOP, that left one man dead and another in critical condition, Harborview Medical Center spokesperson Susan Gregg said. The CHOP is an area that protesters cordoned off near a police station following demonstrations against police violence since Floyd’s death.
Arson suspect
And in Atlanta, fire investigators issued an arrest warrant in the blaze that gutted the fast-food restaurant where Rayshard Brooks was shot and killed by Atlanta police officers a week ago, according to Reuters.
The warrant lists Natalie White, 29, wanted on suspicion of first-degree arson. Brooks, 27, mentioned a Natalie White as his girlfriend on the night he was killed, video from one officer’s body camera shows.
A representative for the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department declined to comment in an email to Reuters on whether officials were investigating a relationship between Brooks and the suspected arsonist.
The statues were falling in continuing protests following Floyd’s death. The African American man died after a white police officer pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck, an incident that has galvanized protesters around the globe to rally against police brutality and racism.
In San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Raleigh, North Carolina, Friday was another night of tearing down Confederate statues.
People video the only statue of a Confederate general, Albert Pike, in the nation's capital after it was toppled by protesters and set on fire in Washington, June 20, 2020.
Statue in DC
In the nation's capital, demonstrators toppled the 11-foot (3.4-meter) statue of Albert Pike, the only statue in the city of a Confederate general. Then they set a bonfire and stood around it as it burned, chanting, "No justice, no peace!" and "No racist police!"
President Donald Trump quickly tweeted about the toppling: "The DC police are not doing their job as they watched a statue be ripped down and burn. These people should be immediately arrested. A disgrace to our Country!"
Statues of two Confederate soldiers that were part of a larger obelisk were torn down Friday night by protesters in Raleigh.
Crews take two more
Saturday morning, official work crews came to the North Carolina capitol to remove two more Confederate statues. One statue was dedicated to the women of the Confederacy, and another was placed by the United Daughters of the Confederacy honoring Henry Wyatt, the first North Carolinian killed in battle in the Civil War, news outlets reported.
Governor Roy Cooper said he ordered the removal for public safety and blamed the Republican majority state General Assembly for the danger.
In San Francisco, Mayor London Breed said she understood the real pain of slavery and oppression and wasn't defending any statue or what it represents, but said protesters should let the entire community discuss and decide what statues are torn down.
A woman holds a sign showing George Floyd, who died after being restrained by Minneapolis police, while marching on Market Street at a protest calling for an end to racial injustice and accountability for police in San Francisco, June 20, 2020.
Grant, Key
In the city’s Golden Gate Park, protesters tore down a bust of Ulysses Grant, who was the U.S. president after he was the general who beat the Confederates and ended the Civil War. Also pulled down was a statue of Francis Scott Key, who wrote the U.S. national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." Key owned slaves.
Drinking fountains, pathways and benches were also spray painted, the city said.
"Every dollar we spend cleaning up this vandalism takes funding away from actually supporting our community, including our African-American community," Breed, who is black, said in a statement.
Protesters also pulled down the statue of Spanish missionary Junipero Serra, an 18th-century Roman Catholic priest who founded nine of California's 21 Spanish missions and is credited with bringing Roman Catholicism to the Western United States.
Serra forced Native Americans to stay at those missions after they were converted or face brutal punishment. His statues have been defaced in California for several years by people who said he destroyed tribes and their culture.
