you smiled at yourself in the mirror, proud with your hair and makeup after working on it for atleast an hour. You smoothed down your tight white top that had gathered on the top of your stomach, and patted down your light grey sweatpants so it fit you perfectly.

You wanted to wear something casual yet pretty and comfortable, just how Keeho would like it.

You headed out of your bathroom and cleaned up every corner of your apartment, whether it be your room, kitchen, living room, study room and every little crevice. The relationship you had established with Keeho was still very new. You had met him at a university graduation dinner and ever since then had been talking. You thought that what you both had was something platonic, but Keeho initiated he wanted to take it a step further when he suggested you two go out on a date. Of course, you didn’t decline. There was no denying that Keeho was a respectful, kind, and certainly attractive man.

And so you now found yourself pacing around your apartment complex, nervous to greet him into your apartment. You continuesly went to the bathroom every now and then to make sure youre happy with your appearance, and even if you were content, it did not help with your atrociously fast heartbeat.

At last, you heard the doorbell ring, causing you to stop your pacing motion and stand still in your tracks. It almost took you a few seconds to register what was soon to come, but once you finally awoke from your trance, you ran towards the door in a hurry.

There Keeho stood, a small little bag in his hand and a beautiful smile on his face. Seeing him calmed you down instantly, allowing you to smile back and greet him inside. You shut the door behind him, watching Keeho as he took in his surroundings and placed the little gift bag on the counter.

“Your place is so pretty” Keeho said in awe, looking at the beautiful flower vases and lit candles that covered the apartment in a soothing floral smell.

“Thank you, It didn’t look like this in the morning, was an absolute mess but I didn’t want to scare you off” You chuckled as you sat down on the couch, moving the throw onto the creme coloured ottoman.

Keeho turned to face you, laughing as he joined you on the couch.

“You know that I wouldn’t of minded y/n. Come on, we’ve been talking for months you dont need to be scared of me going anywher, nor do you have to hide something from me. Even better I could’ve helped you clean” He opened up his arms, inviting you to sit closer to him.

You were always shocked with how easy-going Keeho was. He never seemed to be stressed or even nervous, and you undeniably found that amusing. He was confident with himself and he had all the rights to be confident. He was flawless.

You sat closer to him, allowing him to hug you close to his chest as you rested your head against the crook of his neck. Even if you guys were new you still felt safest with him.

“You wanna watch something?” You asked, briefly lifting your head off his shoulder to grab the TV remote.

“Yeah, whatever you want” Keeho rubbed circles on your shoulder, planting a kiss on the top of your head.

“okay, ill just put something on, don’t know what but we can look together” you clicked the TV on and scrolled through netflix to find things to watch. As Keeho and you finally agreed on a movie, you put it on and allowed yourself to snuggle up close to him.

Before you knew it, the movie had become background noise to you. You were distracted and soon all the attention you had on the movie was on Keeho instead. The way he continued to rub your back, his intoxicating cologne, and his absolutely jaw dropping visuals had your entire body heating up and your face turning a flustered tinge of pink.

You tried to ignore how desperate you were getting, a pool of arousal forming at your core. You shifted on your spot, trying to rub your thighs together discreetly.

As you continued to try and find a way to mask how you were currently feeling, you felt a piercing glance towards your direction.

“is….everything okay?” Keeho asked curiously, tilting his head to the side as he eyed you up and down, trying to understand the situation.

your mouth went dry, eyes widening as you stressed about what to say. would you scare him off if you said you needed him? would he be disgusted at how bad you wanted to kiss his soft plush lips? or would he want to kiss you back and give you what you need?

“oh um….yeah I’m all good, just feeling a bit hot, it’s hot in here right now isn’t it?” you hurriedly said, trying to exert your attention back to the movie playing on the screen, hoping that it would distract Keeho from your situation.

“right…it’s totally not winter outside.” Keeho chuckled, seeing right through your lies and raising his eyebrow signalling you to tell the truth.

“oh for fucks sake I want to kiss you so bad”

you hid your face in your hands, embarrassed at how you had just blurted that out without a second thought. You cringed at the silence, trying to prepare yourself to hear something absolutely brutal.

Before you knew it, you felt a hand make its way up to your face, moving your own hands out of the way. He pulled you closer to him, allowing you to feel his warm embrace.

“My love, you could’ve just told me, I dont mind one bit.”

and that is all it took for you to crash your lips against his.

You warmed up to his touch, melting into the flow of his movements. You allowed him to take control, lips moving in a beautiful synchronised harmony. His hands slowly snaked up around your waist, leisurely making their way underneath your shirt and onto your back.

you felt yourself sink into his touch, a sigh escaping your encased lips. with the opening of your lips, Keeho slipped his tongue, intertwining along with yours. You couldn’t help but moan, a feeling of pure ecstacy driving you insane.

As you continued to kiss him, you wanted nothing more than him to feel you up everywhere else. But you didn’t know how to mention it, nor did you want to break this ravishing moment.

But if this relationship were to continue, he needed to accept every part of you, including the guilty pleasures you swore to never tell anyone. As scary and intimidating as this moment was for you, you pulled your lips off of his for a brief moment, looking into his loveshot eyes.

“Is everything okay y/n?” Keeho asked, an internal distress taking over his body as he wondered if he went too harsh on you or you weren’t enjoying the moment.

“Yes, yes everything is fine, I just—oh my I dont know how to say it” you stuttered, your face turning a bright hue of pink.

“You know you can tell me everything right? I am always here, I accept you for who you are, and the sides I have yet to know of you.” Keeho placed his hand on your thigh, slowly caressing your inner thigh as he spoke to you.

You couldnt help but shudder at his touch, his hands engulfing your thigh.

“I think, no—I want you to mark me up. I want people to know that I belong to you.”

Keeho’s expression was blank, disgust not present on his face. You sat there in the pure silence, worried that you ruined the moment, but your thoughts were cut short when Keeho let out a small snicker.

“Oh yeah? Pretty girl likes getting marked up huh?” He sighed into your neck, breathing down your nape with immense intimacy.

“I can give you that.”

And within an instant Keeho began to kiss at your neck, pulling you closer to him and taking in your beautiful perfume.

You let out a gutteral moan as he lapped at your neck, marking you up just like you wanted him to. He went from the beginning of your neck down to your exposed collarbones, making sure to leave visible marks of purple and red.

“Fuck, just like that Kyo” You tilted your head to the side to give him more access, eyes shut from the pure pleasure that ran down your spine with his current state of actions. You didn’t know what it was about him, whether it was his beautiful hair brushing against your sensitive neck, his other hand grasping the back of your hair, or just him doing what you say, but you were enjoying this moment more than anything else.

Time flew past with both of you unaware of time and the state of each other. Slowly, you felt his hand inch down from your hair, leisurely running down your shoulders as he pulled out his phone.

You watched him in curiosity wondering what he was going to do with his phone, your mind acknowleding every possible scenario. But within an instant, a flash clicked, and another, and another. He was taking photos of you.

And you enjoyed it?….

You smiled, simply relieved that this experience hadnt ended in pure embarrassment. As you expected him to take more photos, he suddenly turned his phone towards you, showing the photos he took.

And you couldn’t believe your eyes.

Your neck was covered in hickeys, every corner was covered by atleast a small purple marking and this turned you on more than you could ever expect. Even if you were to wear a turtle neck you were convinced that he had left another visible marking just for your pure enjoyment. This was all enough to prove that Keeho…was the one.

“Is that good enough for my sweetheart?”

“More than enough.”

Pokemon Worldbuilding Headcanons, Part 2

Part 2 of this. Some are based on the game, some on the anime, and some directly contradict both because the Pokemon lore is made up and your feelings don’t matter.

Intelligence

Pokemon are generally sentient and sapient, and most have strong cognitive abilities.

They don’t know the names of their moves innately, but will quickly learn what words correlate to what moves once they’ve started training.

They’re also quite good at picking up tone of voice and will learn their trainer’s body language as they work together, making it relatively easy for trainers to understand their Pokemon and vice versa.

Some Pokemon can learn to speak English if they have vocal cords capable of mimicking human speech, but this isn’t common. More commonly, many psychic types can communicate with telepathy, and many Pokemon can learn sign language.

There are many Pokemon-specific types of sign language that have been modified to accommodate for different numbers of fingers.

Pokemon therapists (therapists that help Pokemon, not Pokemon that are therapists) exist. In addition to helping with human-Pokemon relations (like helping trainers better understand their Pokemon), they also help Pokemon recover from mental trauma and help diagnose various mental illnesses. They usually work with translators.

Occasionally, a psychic human will be able to understand Pokemon via a specific type of telepathy. They commonly work as professional translators, and will commonly pick up jobs as nurses, therapists, rehabilitators, and more.

Highly intelligent Pokemon will occasionally become Pokemon trainers themselves--there’s no laws against it, though many object to it on principle.

A famous example was an Alakazam that eventually got fed up with its abusive trainer and, realizing no trainer could ever be smarter than them, became a trainer themselves. They eventually made it to gym leader status.

Some intelligent Pokemon form their own mini-societies out in the wilderness. These are designated as no-catch zones, though the Pokemon that live there can always choose to leave if they want to find a trainer to partner with.

Pokemon Centers

Pokemon nurses work at Pokemon Centers. They deal with day-to-day healings, checkups, and other small medical issues. More serious issues are handled by Pokemon doctors at hospitals.

Pokemon nurses treat all species of Pokemon, as they know some degree of standard medical care that’s near-universal.

Pokemon doctors, meanwhile, are trained in specific types and phylogenies, making them experts but only for a small amount of Pokemon.

Pokemon can instantly be teleported to various hospitals for treatment if the issue is too severe or specific for the Center to treat. Pokemon that know teleport are used to move medicine and Pokemon that won’t go in Pokeballs. 

Pokemon can be instantly healed by adding small amounts of energy to them while they’re in their Pokeballs, which helps them recover from minor injuries such as cuts, bruises, small burns, ect.

This process does not help heal severe injuries (illness, broken bones, internal issues, ect.). Instead, these injuries are treated over time using more traditional methods.

Sleep powder is used on Pokemon when they first are released inside of the center/hospital, so nurses/doctors don’t have to worry about getting attacked while looking them over. (Pokemon that are immune to sleep powder are usually paralyzed with stun spore or have disable used on them instead, depending on what needs to be done.)

Pokeballs can be life-saving, as the Pokemon’s energy form means that while it can still become weak and faint, it won’t take severe bodily damage from injuries. This gives trainers more time to get their Pokemon to a medical center and the doctors more time to prepare treatments.

Pokerus is a mutualistic virus; the virus lives in the body and produces energy as a waste product, which is then absorbed by Pokemon. This has a lot of positive health benefits for them, such as faster evolution rates. The only effects are mild fever and cough, which go away as the virus becomes dormant after about 4 days.

However, the reason people don’t actively try to spread it around constantly is that Pokerus can spread to humans, and the effects are much more dangerous than in Pokemon (with no additional benefits to boot). Ergo, most Pokemon that catch it are quarantined, and many trainers get Pokerus vaccinations to be safe. 

Tech

Cars exist, but aren’t used often as many Pokemon view them as threats and will attack them on sight. They’re not really commercially viable anyway when you can just saddle up a large Pokemon you caught instead.

Pokeballs have trackers built into them, so they can be easily relocated if lost. Most Pokemon Centers will have at least one Pokemon that knows teleport that can retrieve the ball as well.

Pokemon Storage Systems are relatively new. They work by teleporting a Pokeball into a large designated storage space, usually a warehouse or an underground area. When a person’s license is scanned, a machine finds and teleports back the Pokeball based on an automated grid system.

The warehouses are heavily guarded at all times, and because the contents of the Pokeballs aren’t labeled poachers are usually deterred from trying to steal from them directly.

The trays that the balls are stored in are known as “boxes”, hence why its referred to as “boxing your Pokemon”.

The energy of a Pokemon is slowed when in storage, effectively putting them to sleep. This allows them to remain in their Pokeballs for longer periods of time. Legally, Pokemon cannot be stored for more than a month for their well-being.

TMs are CDs that are inserted into a cube-like device that the Pokeball is then placed into. These change the simulation inside a Pokeball, creating scenarios that help the Pokemon to learn the new move. They work most of the time, but there’s no guarantee that your Pokemon will figure it out.

Teleportation technology is still being developed. Small objects can be teleported effortlessly; teleportation of living creatures and larger objects is a more recent, hence why warp tiles aren’t used everywhere.

Teleportation was figured out by studying psychic-types who know the move. Catching or renting a psychic-type is still one of the fastest ways to get around.

Food

People used to hunt Pokemon a few thousand years ago out of necessity, though they stuck to common, lower-intelligence Pokemon like Margikarp and Farfetch'd (which is how they became rare). However, this has fallen out of practice over time as humans and Pokemon have gotten closer.

There are many ways to ethically source meat and dairy products. Miltank produce milk, Chansey produce infertile eggs, and Slowpoke and Crabrawler naturally drop and regenerate body parts that can be farmed without harming them (tails and claws, respectively). Other than that, humans rely on plant-based food/synthetic meat in order to get by.

Carnivore Pokemon will hunt and kill other Pokemon in the wild; in captivity, they eat the aforementioned ethically sourced meat.

Pokemon don’t really have “hunting instincts”, in the sense that they won’t blindly maim other prey Pokemon. Indeed, Pokemon in captivity understand that their trainers will feed them, and thus won’t risk harming other Pokemon less they get attacked themselves.

With that said, it’s generally recommended to not put your Corsola and Mareanie on the same team, solely because there’ll likely always be tension between two rival Pokemon and they’re unlikely to get along (though predator/prey friendships aren’t unheard of).

Some intelligent Pokemon have been known to farm both plants and other Pokemon out in the wild, in order to have a continuous food source.

Intelligent Pokemon also understand how to cook and mix ingredients. There are quite a few commonplace recipes in the Pokemon world that originated from Pokemon themselves.

Laws and Regulations

It is illegal to catch immature baby Pokemon, as they’re still too young to leave their parents at that stage (so you couldn’t catch a one-tailed baby Vulpix, for example).

Vintage Pokeballs have to be retrofitted with modern tech. This is because modern tech has things like the aforementioned tracking devices that make them safer to use.

Rare species of Pokemon, legendaries, and shinies are frequently moved onto preserves for protection against poachers. While people are welcome to visit these spaces, they are no-catch zones and rangers enforce this law strictly.

There are several different types of Pokemon licenses, with varying difficulties in obtaining them.

The default licenses can be obtained by anyone 8 years or older, and allows for Pokemon to live in a domestic setting. This requires passing a variety of tests covering basic Pokemon laws and welfare, and is easy to obtain.

Trainer licenses (10+ years) allow for Pokemon to be battled with, entered in contests, ect. This requires having a default license, passing a test regarding safe battling methods, and passing a test battle with a rental Pokemon (doesn’t matter if you win; it’s more about technique, caring for the Pokemon, ect.)

It is only legal to batte without a trainer license if it’s an act of self-defense.

There are also separate licenses for medical and commercial use of Pokemon. These are only obtainable by adults and regulated by the government.

Technically speaking, there’s a permit needed in order to ride Pokemon to make sure that traffic laws are obeyed. Few people with rideable Pokemon actually bother getting one however.

Licenses can be revoked for a number of reasons. Whether or not a licenses is revoked is determined by the local authorities or a judge, if necessary.

Guns and weaponry technically exist, but are almost never used. The reason for this is that a bullet is highly unlikely to kill any given Pokemon, and that Pokemon can and will outright kill someone if they harm their trainer. Ergo, it’s easier to just battle and knock out a person’s Pokemon legally in a battle.

Pokemon that commit crimes are usually judged based on whether or not they were acting of their own accord or being psychology manipulated or abused into performing the act. Most Pokemon are put into rehabilitation programs and may be rehomed or released if the rehab is successful.

If it’s not sucessful, the Pokemon has a tracker placed on them and they’re released into private, sanctioned-off wild areas where they can’t hurt other Pokemon or people.

Wild areas have official ratings regarding how dangerous they are to be in, which is based on factors like the kind of wild Pokemon living there. This helps trainers pick out areas that are relatively safe for catching (or not, if they’ve got a strong team already and want something more powerful).

Funerals

A Pokemon’s body deteriorates into energy after 1-2 weeks or so, depending on size.

There are a variety of funeral options for a deceased Pokemon. Funeral services are almost always a given, which can be small ceremonies for friends or larger events for more well-known Pokemon (such as those belonging to gym leaders). Burials, cremations, and more are all options.

One option that’s been rising in popularity is to return the Pokemon’s body to their Pokeball, then breaking the capture mechanism to prevent stealing of higher-end balls. The Pokeball is then placed on a pillow in a “cubby” with a glass door, which can be filled with belongings, favored items, or photographs.

The Pokeballs can be kept as-is, polished and shined to look like new, or even decorated in things like gold leaf, depending on the trainer’s preferences.

A Pokemon can only stay in its ball for 1-3 years straight without eventually dying from energy atrophy (thankfully, this is painless). Because Pokemon can leave their balls whenever they want, deaths like this are virtually unheard of.

Ghost-type Pokemon can sometimes be spirits of the deceased (both humans and Pokemon), but they can also be just random collections of energy. There are also regular ghosts, which are different from ghost-types and cannot be caught.

Catching ghost-types is illegal around most burial grounds, as many of them are just visiting their former trainers as they come by to mourn.

Pokemon that are ghosts retain their memories of their past lives, and can still use attacks that they knew previously.

Ghost-types don’t usually remember their previous lives, but it isn’t unheard of for them to remember one or two former attacks despite this. This means that ghost-types can potentially know any type of attack outside of the ones they know naturally or learn from TMs.

What was your opinion on Five apologizing to Reggie? Five seemed so apprehensive to see his dad, almost afraid despite technically being older. Five was very calm and collected during the convo and offered up that apology. The entire light supper scene really showcased how when in Reggie’s presence they all revert back to the scared kids under their abusive dad except Five who didn’t react at all the way I thought he would. You always have great insight so I was curious

I think Five’s apology is evidence of how disconnected he’s become from his abusive childhood. 

I don’t think that’s bad, but I don’t think it’s good, either. It’s just a fact. For perspective, here’s how Five spent his life: 

13 years: The Academy. His time here wasn’t great by any stretch. We don’t know the details of his training, but given what Klaus endured, it’s almost a given that it was fairly brutal—physically punishing, psychologically taxing, and emotionally draining. Schoolwork involved involved lessons in Ancient Greek and at least six other languages (if you want to assume Allison is fluent in seven languages because she had lessons in more and simply fell out of practice with them). There was also humiliation and the frustration that comes with it, since Reginald wouldn’t let Five practice time travel and didn’t trust his abilities enough to just have him start small. Mealtimes were silent and he was given half an hour for fun per week. All that said, Five wasn’t lacking in material comforts. He might have been punished for talking through meals, but he got three of them each day. The Academy might have been a joyless home, but it protected him from the elements. He might not have always gotten along with his siblings, but he still had their companionship—six people to commiserate and sneak out for donuts with. He might not have been allowed to explore any more of the cities they visited than was strictly required for their missions, but he got to travel the world and be celebrated as a hero. 

45(?) years: The apocalypse. The first thing he sees is the Academy—and the rest of the city—destroyed and in flames. Soon after, he finds his siblings dead in the rubble. Everything he knows about what happened beforehand he has to piece together himself, through whatever newspapers he can scavenge and through a book his sister wrote that opens with “We were never a real family” (so, not exactly uplifting reading). Canned food lasts about 5 years max (which he may or may not have known beforehand, making food poisoning a very real danger) so he would’ve had to forage. An asteroid impact of that magnitude probably would’ve killed off a good bit of the vegetation, meaning he would’ve had to ignore large sections of those books on edible plants simply because those plants were now extinct. Clean water would’ve been a luxury until he figured out how to purify his own, and even then he would’ve had to ration it. Cleaning his clothes would’ve become such an afterthought he might have forgotten what truly clean clothes felt like. The isolation was so oppressive he took to carrying on conversations with a mannequin—and the mannequin began talking back—and turned to alcoholism, which became a bone of contention between him and said mannequin. The only help he had came from the books that survived the impact. If at any point he miscalculated in his water purification or his foraging, he would have died alone, with no one around to remember him. 

0-1 years: The Commission. He got money for food, clean clothes, and all the water he needed, but it came at a cost. The Commission put him on a grueling schedule (if Hazel’s complaining in S1 is any indication). He was expected to do jobs quickly and without attracting attention—and if he did attract attention, his employer was not inclined to quickly forgive. But more than that, he was expected to kill people—decent people whose only crime was unwittingly altering a timeline constantly in flux. Although he coped through detachment, it seems there was still a good bit of cognitive dissonance (contrast his “I never enjoyed [killing]” with his readiness to murder a gardener to push the timeline back into proper alignment, or his apparent lack of ill will toward the Board of Directors with their gruesome murders). 

Again, his time at the Academy wasn’t easy, but with all of the above taken into account, it seems it was probably the least horrific part of Five’s life. Looking back from the apocalypse or from the Commission, it would’ve been easy for him to reminisce fondly on those silent meals or compare the difficulties of training to the despair of not finding a single edible thing in a five-mile radius. Through all that reflection, he would’ve been painfully aware that his own hubris got him stuck in the apocalypse. Thoughts about “if only”—if only he’d listened to Reginald, if only he’d waited—probably turned toward the rest of his time at the Academy. If only he’d done what Reginald said without arguing, he wouldn’t have earned that punishment. If only he hadn’t been so combative, he might’ve seen Reginald’s point. If only he’d been less of a smug little shit, he wouldn’t have gotten stuck. 

So when he sees Reginald again, he’s not confronting the source of his misery the way his siblings are. To his mind, Reginald is a minor boss—scary, but not nearly as bad as the other things he’s faced. I think he’s probably come to downplay some of what he endured at the Academy, simply because the rest of his life was so grim that the cruelty Reginald put him through seemed tame by comparison.

Maria DeLuca Details

Things we know about Maria DeLuca... an excellent summary of character-details assembled by @lambourngb. Full credit to her, because this is an excellent compilation of information.  I edited it a touch in a few places, but this is almost entirely her content.

She was an animal rights activist in high school who wasn’t afraid to dump fake blood on the elite mean girls at a dance.

She grew up thinking she and her mom were the only black people in town and learned to love her skin because of her mom’s confidence.

She loved Rosa Ortecho. They snuck up to the roof together, getting wasted/high without Liz, who was a Very Good Girl. She knew some of Rosa’s secrets, and 10 years later she is still lovingly maintaining a memorial for Rosa against a very hostile and racist town.

She seemingly stayed behind after all of her friends left (or was away briefly before Mimi got too ill to run things). She runs a business that her mother handed over to her. In a town that is devoted to tourist traffic, even though she struggles financially, she maintains a bar strictly bare of any alien-themes and will kick out anyone who talks about aliens.

She was lonely during those 10 years, stalking social media for a glimpse of what Liz and the others might be doing. It hasn’t been explicitly stated but it appears Alex was the only one she saw during those 10 years.

She’s a mercenary and keeps a tab. She runs a monthly night to support homeless and less advantaged people. She will employ a racist band leader as long as they play for free.  

She does whatever she has to in order to earn money and keep her mom safe. She has never relied on anyone to save her or her mom. The only time she asks for assistance, it is for company/emotional support while fighting for her mother’s mental health (in 1x07 when she asks Liz to meet her at the senior center and in 1x09 when she asks Liz to drive to Texas with her to see the faith healer).

She can sing. She has a guitar. Music is important to her, and a way of honoring her absent friends (90s night).  She looks amazing in a formal dress.

She knows Michael as a regular customer and playfully bans him for his antics/bar fights. As someone who has to pay sales tax based on the weight of liquor in her bar, Michael drinking straight from a bottle is a PROBLEM but she allows it because she keeps a tab.

Evidence:

She knows Max is often the one who hauls Michael out of trouble.

Her most important and longest lasting relationship is with her mother, who she is losing day by day to a type of dementia the doctors can’t treat or find on a test. She is forced to commit her mother to a senior center with a memory ward for Mimi’s safety.

As for feelings...

She knows Alex was in crazy stupid love 10 years ago after a kiss in the UFO Emporium. At this conference, the Pope referred to drug addiction as “a new form of slavery”, and those who abuse drugs as having “lost their freedom.” In short, the Pope has been quite adamant that the Church opposes legislation which would legalize drugs for recreational purposes.

Accordingly, the plain text of the Catechism, together with a variety of statements from the head of the Church, make it quite clear that the Catholic Church condemns recreational drug use and, by extension, the efforts of certain segments of society and government which have facilitated their legalization and access to the general public for recreational purposes.

The Church Does Not Condemn Drug Use for Medical Purposes.

The plain text of the Catechism exempts from the general prohibition against drug use, the use of drugs for “therapeutic” reasons. Unlike certain other Christian sects, the Church does not discourage its followers from seeking and obtaining medical treatment where the same is useful or necessary to maintain or restore health. Accordingly, the therapeutic use exception incorporated within the Catechism is consistent with the Church’s desire to function in modern society, and recognizes the utility of medical technologies that do not offend basic moral tenets.

There is a logical textual argument that medicinal marijuana is, itself, exempted from the general prohibition on drug use under paragraph 2291 of the Catechism. As a threshold matter, paragraph 2291 of the Catechism does not distinguish between synthetic manmade drugs, and so-called “plant-based” drugs such as marijuana. It also does not specifically address the morality or acceptability of a drug which is lawfully prescribed in some territories of a country, but is illegal in other territories (i.e. the State and Federal Government divide in the United States). Rather, the Catechism discusses “drugs” as a general matter which is consistent with its intention to serve as a universal document to be understood and followed by the Church faithful worldwide. The distinction the Catechism does draw is between drugs used for therapeutic (read “medicinal”) purposes and non-therapeutic (read “recreational”) purposes. To that end, it is reasonable to assume that the word “marijuana” or is interchangeable with the word “drugs” for purposes of paragraph 2291 and, thus, the Catechism itself expressly permits the therapeutic use of marijuana, but prohibits the recreational use of marijuana; to wit: paragraph 2291 can be logically revised to read: “The use of marijuana (or cannabis) inflicts very grave damage on human health and life. Its use, except on strictly therapeutic grounds, is a grave offense.”

Several Prominent Church Leaders have Endorsed Medical Marijuana as a Legitimate Medical Treatment.

The concept of marijuana as a potentially valuable medical treatment has been advanced by several high-ranking Church officials both here in the United States and elsewhere. In 2015, Cardinal Norberto Rivera of Mexico indicated that the Church had no issue with the medicinal use of marijuana noting that “all elements from nature . . .can be used to improve health.” Furthermore, in April of 2016 in the midst of a public debate in the Iowa Legislature about the passage of a medical marijuana bill, Bishop Richard Pates of the Diocese of Des Moines asked members of the State House and Senate in Iowa to approve a proposed bill stating: “ I believe now is the time to help suffering Iowans and their families get access to this medicine”. Moreover, Father Kenneth Doyle of the influential Catholic News Service noted in a 2017 article that:

“When used. . .(with proper controls) for medical reasons, its use cannot only be permitted by applauded; research has found medical marijuana effective for certain patients with epilepsy, bipolar disorders, cancer, etc.-as well as for some children with severe autism.”

Finally, in one of the more comprehensive expositions on the subject, Archbishop Socrates Villegas, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, said in an August 16, 2016 statement entitled “Pastoral Guidance on the Compassionate Use of Cannabis” that:

“The Highest teaching authority of the Church allows for the palliative and compassionate use of narcotics, particularly in the case of the terminally ill. We have been apprised of various medical situations other than terminal illness where it seems that palliative cure and relief involving the use of narcotics including cannabis may be indicative. The obligation to treat subsists, even when it may not be possible to cure. We appeal therefore to the prudent and Spirit-filled discernment of our health care workers, particularly our physicians, to apply the principle of proportionality and to determine carefully whether there is due proportion between the risks involved in the use of narcotics and psychotropic substances and the benefits anticipated.”

The Archbishop’s statement is a further exemplification of the basic principle expressed in the Catechism that drugs, including marijuana, that have a therapeutic benefit may be morally used for medicinal purposes.

Accordingly, the assertion that the Church simultaneously condemns the use of marijuana recreationally, while supporting its use solely for medicinal purposes, is supported by both a rational interpretation of the text of the Catechism, as well as recent pronouncements from high-level officials within the Church.

Catholic Ethicists Are Analyzing Marijuana’s Potential Benefits for Palliative Care

Marijuana is regularly touted by legalization advocates as an alternative therapy to manage pain in patients with chronic, debilitating and/or terminal conditions. For its part, the Church has long advocated for pain management for suffering patients, condemning the practice of physician-assisted suicide and espousing a fundamental principle that all life is sacred from conception to the point of natural death. Additionally, while Church teaching condemns the use of drugs designed to end or hasten the end of human life, it specifically supports their use to help patients manage the pain associated with debilitating medical conditions.

Both Catholic and secular medical ethicists are considering medical marijuana and its potential utility as part of a palliative care treatment protocol, viewing it no differently than other medical treatments used for pain management. In writing about the work of Catholic ethicists who are considering the potential utility of medical marijuana, Tom Tracy of the Catholic News Service points out that: “while marijuana is known to have harmful side effects especially on young users and is prohibited by federal law, it also has been shown to be effective therapy for persons with glaucoma, certain types of cancer, AIDS, end of life diseases in which persons suffer lack of appetite, skin breakdowns and general weakness.” Additionally, Mercy Sister Patricia Talone, vice president of mission services at the St. Louis based Catholic Health Association states:

“[You have to look at medical marijuana] the same way you judge any treatment in terms of benefits and burdens: One would have to judge marijuana in light of a specific person. If this is something that could increase the appetite and quality of life of someone in the hospice program, for example, then the medical use may be acceptable.”

In writing about cannabinoid use to help manage pain in patients with varying medical conditions, Dr. SK. Aggarwal of Auburn Medical Center and the MultiCare Institute for Research and Innovation notes:

“With regard to conditions relevant to oncology, cannabis medicines, both orally administered and inhaled, have been shown in randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials to have efficacy for a number of symptoms, including opioid-refractory cancer pain, nausea and vomiting secondary to active chemotherapy, appetite stimulation and weight gain in patients with AIDS wasting syndromes, painful HIV sensory neuropathy, and chronic intractable neuropathic pain from multiple causes.”

Therefore, as noted above, from the perspective of both Catholic and secular medical ethicists, marijuana is not categorically rejected due to its reputational stigma as a recreational drug. Rather, it is viewed, analyzed and assessed, along with other treatment modalities, for its potential efficacy in treating a variety of symptomologies. Unfortunately, most of the much-needed research is not happening in the United States due to regulatory constraints. Perhaps it is those very barriers that will provide the catalyst for engagement by ethicists and medical professions (faith-based and otherwise) as the efficacy and benefit of cannabis and its derivatives become more readily verifiable in patient populations in countries without these restraints.

Medical Marijuana May Further the Cause of Catholic Social Justice by Providing Cost-Effective Access to Care

A pillar of Catholic teaching on social justice is that society must “help in the attainment of living conditions… food and clothing, housing, health care, basic education and social assistance.” Unfortunately, for most U.S. consumers the ever-increasing costs of prescription medication makes it difficult for many to afford the medicines that they need. Dr. Sudip Bose, MD points out in his piece, “The High Cost of Prescription Drugs in the United States” that:

“If you look at the landscape of prescription drugs in America, you’ll notice there is nothing taking place to keep drug prices low. There are no specific regulations to keep a ceiling on costs. The pharmaceutical manufacturers have the very tempting opportunity to charge whatever they think a drug’s demand and the market will bear. It’s simply possible for a drug company to charge high prices if they want to us because they can.”

According to data collected by AARP, the average price of retail drugs for older Americans jumped 15.5% between 2014 and 2015 (which represented the fourth straight year of

double-digit increases). The pricing story for medical marijuana, however, is far happier for consumers. For example, in Colorado since adult use of marijuana became legal in 2014, medical marijuana prices have seen a steady decline. In January of 2017, the average retail price for a gram of marijuana at a Colorado adult use dispensary was $6.65. By October of 2017, that price had declined by 12 percent.

In his article entitled “The Healing Community: A Catholic Social Justice Critique of Modern Health Care”, Rev. D. Paul Sullins, Professor of Sociology at the Catholic University of America and the Director of the Summer Catholic Institute of Social Thought, writes:

“In the United States, access to medical care is obstructed by the high cost of care at all levels. There are many differences of opinion over how to solve this problem, but can be little question about the existence of the problem itself. The facts speak for themselves. This year over two million Americans will declare bankruptcy due to medical costs, indeed, healthcare expense is the most frequent cause of personal financial collapse in the United States.”

The high cost of pain management protocols (particularly for the poor and uninsured) require the afflicted to often choose between bankruptcy or living with debilitating pain. This is directly contrary to the Church’s view that access to healthcare is a fundamental human right. Also, traditional pharmacologic pain protocols require access to physicians, frequent doctor’s visits, and high-cost prescription medications, and alternative therapies which de-emphasize the use of highly addictive opioid medications are often not covered by insurance.

Access to medical cannabis, however, at least in States with a functional medical cannabis program, offer the potential for ready access to an effective pain management drug at a substantially decreased cost. In his letter to Members of Congress in 2009, Bishop William Murphy, the head of the Diocese of Rockville Center, New York and the then Chair of the U.S. Bishop’s Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, encapsulated the Church’s position concerning the then pressing issue of national health care reform as follows:

“Reform efforts must begin with the principle that decent health care is not a privilege, but a right and a requirement to protect the life and dignity of every person. … The bishops’ conference believes health care reform should be truly universal and it should be genuinely affordable”

If medical cannabis holds the prospect of providing ready access to lower cost, and effective pain management for patients, particularly those in need of end of life care, then its use would appear not only acceptable for purposes of Church doctrine, but directly aligned with a crucial social justice priority of the Church: that health care and treatments should be readily available to all, regardless of their economic position in society.

Conclusion and Recommendations

As noted above, while current Church teaching on cannabis legalization in the United States is not one dimensional, it is readily ascertainable and the following can be clearly distilled:

1. The Church unequivocally condemns the use of drugs (including marijuana) for purely recreational purposes.

2. There is support in Church doctrine for the ethical and moral use of drugs for therapeutic purposes. There is a logical argument that “drugs” can be interpreted to include cannabis and, thus, the therapeutic use of cannabis is permitted by doctrine. This view is espoused by several prominent figures within the Church, as well as Catholic ethicists.

3. There may be a growing acceptance of medicinal marijuana as being compatible with the universal social teachings of the Church respecting palliative care and pain management, as well as universal access to effective medications.

When assessing whether to support marijuana legalization initiatives in their home States, American Catholics can look to fundamental church teachings, as well as statements from various Church prelates and ethicists, to inform their decision-making. Viewed in this context, the legalization of marijuana and its use for purely recreational purposes is condemned by the Church, notwithstanding the state of the law in various jurisdictions within the United States. On the other hand, legalization of cannabis for solely medical purposes in a well-regulated marketplace seems not only be permissible under the social teachings of the Church, but could be championed as a useful and necessary societal step in furthering the cause of universal and low-cost access to healthcare.

There are two different kinds of Rosemary, upright and creeping, which come in several different varieties.

Tuscan Blue (upright): The most common and popular variety, Tuscan Blue grows to between 6 to 7 feet tall. The leaves are slightly broader than other varieties, with a high oil content and strong flavour and aroma. Flowers are deep blue. It grows densely, tall and wide.

Miss Jessup’s (Upright): A good choice for herb gardens and smaller spaces, this variety grows 4 to 6 feet tall and about 2 to 3 feet wide. It has slender branches and develops pale blue flowers

Prostratus (groundcover): This variety grows wide and cascades beautifully over walls and containers. It grows to about 2 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide. The flowers are pale blue. This variety does not tolerate frost as well as others do.

Irene (groundcover):  With showy purple-blue flowers, this variety grows to 1 1/2 feet tall and it spreads widely, growing about 2 to 3 feet per season. This is a good choice for walls and slopes. It is hardier than ‘Prostraus’ and other trailing varieties, tolerating colder conditions to around 15 F.

Propagating Rosemary

Propagating Rosemary from cuttings is by far the quickest and easiest method. In water, it takes about two weeks to see roots forming from your cuttings and about another two to three weeks for them to be ready to plant.

You can take cuttings from a live plant or you can use sprigs of fresh Rosemary from your local grocery store (as long as they are green and fresh).

How to Grow Rosemary from Cuttings:

Take your cuttings from the green and soft growth at the top of the plant. Avoid taking cuttings lower down, from the older and woodier stems as green, now growth has the highest potential to make new roots and shoots.

Cut them about six to eight inches from the tip. Strip off the lower leaves, exposing two to three inches of bare stem.

Trim the stems by cutting them immediately below a node (leaf joint), as this is the area with the most growth potential for new roots. Some people like to scrape the bark off the bottom inch of the stem to assist with water uptake but this isn’t strictly necessary.

Pop the cut stems into a glass of fresh water, with water up to just below the first line of leaves.

Place the glass in a warm, well-lit place (6 to 8 hours of bright sunlight a day). Replace the water every three to four days.

Once you see little white roots begin to form, in about two weeks or so, you are well on your way! Leave the plants in water for another week or so, to allow the roots to establish, and then you can plant them out.

How to Grow Rosemary from Seed:

Growing Rosemary from seed is a lengthy and unpredictable process. The seeds do not always grow ‘true to type’ and they have a failure rate of around 50 %. This means that about half of the seeds you plant won’t germinate.For this reason, always plant twice as many seeds as the number of plants you want.

However, the actual planting process is simple:

Prepare your planting tray or container – Use a loose, sandy potting mix and just a handful of organic compost. Cover the bottom of the container about two inches thick. Water and let the excess water drain away.

Plant your seeds – Scatter seeds densely over the top of your soil. Remember to use twice as many seeds as the number of plants you hope get.

Cover and Settle the Seeds – Scatter less than ½ an inch of the same potting mix over the seeds. Use a spray bottle to gently wet the soil on top.

Position your container – Place the container in a warm, sunny spot. Your seeds need to be kept warm (80-90 F). Special heating mats can be purchased to place under the tray. It is best to plant seeds indoors, so that temperatures do not fluctuate too much.

Seeds take as long as three months to sprout and they need their conditions to be quite consistent. Keep the soil moist (but not waterlogged) and keep them warm.

Once they have two to three true leaves, they are ready to plant out into soil. Keep them indoors to harden off before moving them outside.

A neutral to alkaline Ph (between 7 and 8) is best. If you are using a potting mix, amend it by adding at least 1/3 sand or Perlite to ensure that it drains well.

Location – How to Grow Rosemary Outdoors

Full sun to partial, bright, shade. It needs 6 to 8 hours of bright sun each day. Rosemary will withstand heat well and can flourish in those harsh spots that are too hot and too dry or exposed for many other plants.

It does well with good air circulation and good drainage. Creeping varieties are particularly good for steep, exposed banks as the deep roots will hold and stabilise both the plant and the bank.

Location – How to Grow Rosemary Indoors

Indoors, Rosemary needs to be in a bright, sunny position where it will get at least 6 to 8 hours of full sun. It needs good air flow and will benefit from being near a door or window, in a large room. It also does very well on balconies and in window boxes.

Water 

Rosemary does not need a lot of water. It needs to dry out completely between watering and then receive a thorough soaking, that is allowed to drain away. It does not do well in water logged soil or with the roots sitting in water at the bottom of the pot.

Rosemary is susceptible to Root Rot. The fine roots, responsible for water and nutrient uptake, will die off if they are too wet, for too long. This is a plant that is very hardy until you kill it with kindness and over water it!

Space

The amount of room needed for your plant depends on the variety and location. Standing varieties planted outdoors can reach 6 feet in height and up to 8 feet in width!

Creeping varieties do not grow tall but will spread out horizontally. Regular harvesting and pruning will keep your Rosemary compact, with denser foliage, than plants that are allowed to grow freely.

Containers 

As a fairly deep-rooted plant, it needs depth more than width when planted in a container. It grows vertically quite quickly and it is a good idea to keep an eye on the height of the plant.

Re-pot it into a deeper pot when it is a little over twice the height of its current container. This will also prevent it from becoming root bound.

Because it needs to dry out, containers should always have good drainage (put some stones in the bottom of the pot to aid drainage) and terracotta or unglazed ceramic is the best material to use.

Unglazed ceramic / terracotta allows excess moisture to escape (just remember to have a glazed (or glass or plastic) under tray, if your plant is on a surface that will be damaged by moisture).

How to Care for Your Rosemary Plants

How to Water Rosemary: Rosemary is relatively drought resistant and needs to be in loose, well-draining soil. Depending on the temperature, you can water once a week or even less frequently. Over watering or allowing the roots to sit in wet, waterlogged soil, will result in root rot.

Useful Tip: Rosemary will tell you when it needs water – the tips of the plant will flop over slightly, or, if it is in a container, the soil will pull away from the sides of the pot. When you see one or both of these signs, it is time to give the plant a good soaking.

How to Prune Rosemary: Regular harvesting or pruning throughout the growing season (spring to autumn) will encourage new, tender, growth and dense foliage. The plant will not die back in winter but it will ‘hibernate’ and stop actively growing.

It is a good idea to prune it back by about two thirds at the beginning of winter. This allows the plant to regenerate and grow back well in the spring.

How to Feed Rosemary: Rosemary does not require a lot of fertilizing. Mulching with an organic compost once a year, in the beginning of the spring, will be enough to keep it happy and healthy.

If the soils are particularly poor, or have been excessively depleted from watering and drying during the summer, add a small amount of nitrogen rich fertilizer, once a year.

Managing Pests and Diseases

Rosemary is a particularly pest and disease resistant plant. The high oil content and strong flavour of the leaves even make it unpopular with deer and rabbits. However, there are still a few things to look out for:

Root Rot: When roots are left standing in waterlogged soil for too long, the fine roots, on the outside of the root-ball, will rot and die off. This cuts off the plant’s supply of water and nutrients.

Often, the plant wilt… and look like it needs more water! Don’t kill it with kindness – Always check that the soil is draining freely and that the soil at the bottom of the pot has dried out before watering it again.

Powdery Mildew: This fungal infection can affect plants that are in a damp and crowded position. Indoor plants are more susceptible. Cut out any affected stems and dispose of them away from other plants. Ensure good air circulation and allow the plant to dry out well.  Avoid over watering or watering from above.

Spittle Bugs & Aphids: These pesky little bugs are the most common pests found on Rosemary. Dislodge them and wash them away with a blast from the hose or spray bottle. The plant can withstand a jet of water and the small, narrow leaves make it difficult for the bugs to cling on. This method is effective and completely safe for you and your plants.

How to Harvest & Store Rosemary

Harvesting

Harvest Rosemary throughout the year by cutting the sprigs about 6 to 8 inches from the tip. Choose tender, green growth for the best flavour and aroma.

The oil content (and thus flavour and aroma) is the highest right before the plant flowers, which makes it a particularly good time to harvest for drying and preserving. Harvest when you see the first tiny buds developing for the strongest fragrance and flavour (just remember that harvesting now will function as a pruning and delay the plant from flowering).

For cooking, strip the leaves from the stems by gripping the stem firmly at the tip and sliding your fingers back down the stem to remove the leaves.

Rosemary can be dried and then preserved in airtight containers (find some nice glass and bamboo containers on Amazon here) or it can be frozen whole or in ice trays with water or Olive Oil.

Freezing

Harvest, rinse off and pat your Rosemary dry. Freeze whole sprigs in a freezer bag or strip the leaves off and chop them finely to put into an ice cube tray. Cover the Rosemary with water or Olive Oil and freeze. Once frozen, remove the cubes from the tray and store them in a freezer bag. Cubes of Rosemary on Olive Oil are wonderfully convenient for cooking and can be used for frying, baking, garnishing and in pestos.

Drying

Harvest sprigs of Rosemary 6 to 10 inches long. Tie them in loose bunches. Hang the bunches upside down in a cool, dry and dark place, until they are completely dry and brittle.

Strip the leaves from the stems and store them in an airtight container to use whenever needed. You can crush or grind them in a pestle and mortar before (or after) storing. Dried Rosemary can keep for up to a year without losing its flavour!
