i got tagged in an ask game by @bleachbleachbleach! pretty excited about this bc i've been wanting to participate in a tag game ever since making an account - this one is my first ^^

Three Ships: i'll go with my comfort otps: Ichihime from Bleach, Kyoru from Fruits Basket, and Gajevy from Fairy Tail.

First Ship: probably Miroku x Sango from Inuyasha! that was my first ever anime and i was far more invested in them than i was in the main leads lmao. turned out to be pretty formative bc a lot of my otps have the same "openly competent badass x surprisingly competent dumbass" dynamic lmao.

Last Song: My Mother Told Me (specifically a cover by The Hound + The Fox). it's an old Viking shanty, very melancholy with lots of bass, and it's been stuck on a loop in my brain for the past several hours.

Last Film: technically Trolls 3 bc i was babysitting yesterday, but i don't want that one to count lol. the last film i watched of my own volition was the 2017 Murder on the Orient Express, which i HIGHLY recommend!!! it's a masterpiece *chef's kiss*

Currently Reading: Before The Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. it's...okay-ish so far. i can see why people like it, but tbh i think the clumsy translation is holding it back. i've also been really into reincarnation/isekai stories but specifically ones where the MC does Not want to be involved in this shit and spends the entire story searching for a way out lmao.

Currently Watching: Ghosts (UK version). it's by the same group who did Horrible Histories, and i'm not exaggerating when i say every episode is laugh out loud funny - it combines typical British humor with black comedy and just a dash of historical drama, and i've had to stop myself from binging the whole thing in one go multiple times.

Currently Consuming: double-salted licorice, which is a Dutch candy that's exactly what it sounds like. it's burning my tongue and drowning out every other sense i have with its overpowering flavor, just the way i like it :D

Currently Craving: more double-salted licorice.

1: sexuality headcanon: Demisexual 2: otp: I’ve always loved the idea of him and Mungojerrie in a QPR, and we need more content of ace-spectrum relationships in general. <3 3: brotp: I headcanon Jemima as his stepsister, and he adores her.  He’s also great friends with Plato. 4: notp: Him and Tantomile--I’m sorry, he and Tanto literally have the same costume template, that is his twin. 5: first headcanon that pops into my head: He really likes and admires Bustopher Jones, but he hates human food, so he never knows what to say when he’s invited for a night of clubbing.  If Bustopher twists his arm, Cori usually ends up just sitting there with a glass of water. 6: favorite line from this character: “Are you tense when you sense there’s a storm in the air?”  Tommi Sliiden’s voice from the 1998 movie is so haunting, and I wish we’d heard more of it. 7: one way in which I relate to this character: I am also an utter dweeb at heart who can only pretend to be dignified. They dance in the creeper episode and the caveman episode, and, to trick the Mummy, they dress as Marc Anthony and Cleopatra, and to trick the witch doctor they dress as Tarzan and Jane, not cosplay actually, but still. I cant name the teasing specifically in this little ask box and I'm too shy to message. Shag does have a lot more backbone WAY than compared others so he does call V out, and since he's with, much more than F&D , it does happen more. Some filmstrips are on YouTube, with more otw.

After reviewing the footage... YOU RIGHT! However, after looking at the footage, I don’t really get the impression that any of these kinds of interactions would be fully unique and exclusive to just the two of them. And for me, it’s those unique dynamics and interactions that make the ship feel real good, you know?

Like, obviously Shaggy will dress with Scooby in whatever is around and they probably would do a famous couple if it came down it it. (Obviously the two have no problems with wearing drag.) And I have the feeling that if Shaggy ever got split up with Daphne (which... You know... Sadly in WAY never happens) that he would do the exact same with with her too. And yeah, I was surprised to see that they did dance together! However, obviously Fred and Daphne dance together way way more than Shaggy and Velma do... And you know something...? I don’t actually get couple vibes from Fred and Daphne in WAY at all... (I get more of a sibling vibe from the two of them.) So the mere existence of their dancing together isn’t really enough to convince me.

So I went through the episodes that you pointed out in their entirety, just to look at all of the interactions that Shaggy and Velma have in those episodes. And yeah, I did notice some of the teasing. But Shaggy doesn’t really tease back. He mostly deflects the teasing by telling really corny jokes. Which is like... Something he does with literally everyone! Velma, Fred, the villains... So I am sadly just not seeing anything here that is unique between the two of them to really build ideas for this relationship around. If the dancing was enough to convince me, then I would romantically ship Fred and Daphne more. If the teasing was enough to convince me, then why not ship Shaggy with Fred? If the costumes were enough... Well... I really don’t want to actually ship Shaggy and Scooby, but you know...

What currently stand as my two favorite ships for this show right now are Velma/Fred and Shaggy/Fred. Because I really get a feeling of what those relationships would look like, and how they would be distinct and unique from any of the other configurations. Velma and Fred would be a relationship built on mutual understanding. They are just on the same page always, and they would just be CONSTANTLY gushing over mystery stuff together. Mystery books, new ideas for how trick and capture baddies, unsolved/cold cases... I just see the two of them being genuinely excited to go on a date together just so that they can be dweebs together without anyone judging. And I can just see them always having the other’s back. Meanwhile Shaggy and Fred would have a more tumultuous relationship. They clash, butt heads, and can often be at odds with one another. But ultimately they trust one another, and are always able to talk it out. Shaggy doesn’t like how Fred puts him in danger, and Fred doesn’t like how resistant Shaggy can get to his ideas. But each of them know that they can always rely on the other and that they genuinely care about each other. And that can actually be a very beneficial relationship! Fred would push Shaggy just a little out of his comfort zone to try new things, and Shaggy can always pull Fred back to keep him safe. And I also imagine that their relationship would be one with a lot of laughter, because I get the sense that Fred genuinely adores Shaggy’s sense of humor. Of course my bias towards Fred may be coloring a lot of what I see, since he is my favorite. (But I can still provide evidence if you want it!)

And sadly, I just don’t have as clear of an image in my head with Shaggy/Velma as I do with these other pairings. Any relationship with Velma would include some degree of sass and teasing. Any relationship with Shaggy would have some playful aspect to it. But what more would their relationship look like? What more would they do together? What would they talk about? And how would it be different and distinct from the other possible pairings? I just don’t know. And this fact makes me sad. D: This is the evidence that I’m looking for and I just haven’t been seeing it. AND I WANT TO SEE IT!

Also I know how scary it can be to message people sometimes. But if you do want to bring this out of the public sphere, I would be more than happy to chat with you! I promise that I don’t bite.

But I do feel like I should feel a little sorry how I always turn these things into long-ass rants... I am very bad at being concise... >.>
