Why *is* LMQ getting his tires changed here anyway?

Obviously, he blew a LR coming to the line, so it seems prudent that he have a new one. I guess. But to be honest, plenty of cars in NASCAR do their victory stage duties down a tire or two, post-burnout, and given that LMQ's tire had already shorn clear off, he wasn't risking further body damage via the tire carcass coming off at speed. (And given that the race was over at this point, it probably wouldn't really matter; but I would imagine that all of these things matter a bit more, in the Piston Cup than they do in NASCAR, because they are the cars.)

He also gets new street tires (as opposed to racing slicks) on all four corners, as opposed to just the left rear.

But it's not common practice to immediately change into street tires, because Strip and Chick are still in slicks all the way through the would-be victory celebration:

So I feel like LMQ could've just had a scuff put on his LR and called it good for the time being. I think he only gets the four street tires because it shortcuts what this pit crew will have to do tonight, and they just want out, ASAP.

And like, obviously LMQ was being a dick about it to "Not Chuck," but at the end of the day, giving a postrace interview to Kori is a contractual obligation just as much as the actual race is. Lightning McQueen is, in this moment, supposed to be giving an interview. Having this tire business happen right now is actually an imposition, and probably moreso for RSN and Kori than LMQ himself, really. And the interview does actually have to be right now, because 1) if the Piston Cup is anything like NASCAR, they market the immediacy of their postrace interviews, and 2) RSN desperately needs content to fill the dead air while the race results are decided. Saying "hey I need to get my tires changed" first isn't really an option when you're one of the three guys who might've won the race and therefore RSN wants YOU (see: the number of NASCAR drivers giving interviews when someone should be letting them sit down and drink water, omg). Technically, LMQ is doing exactly what he's supposed to be doing in this moment, and Not Chuck et al kind of aren't.

This was fascinating to me, because it really says a lot about the team dynamic. Like, obviously we know "no tires just gas" McQueen and his litany of fired crew chiefs and general poorly socialized mayhem, but the team is dysfunctional at a level that extends beyond LMQ's own behavior, too. Again, the dysfunction is definitely exacerbated by LMQ's attitude, but in this particular scene he is actually just trying to do fulfill his contract and do his media and not only does his pit crew not like him (he's giving them absolutely no reason to), they are also not disciplined enough to do their jobs in a conscientious, understanding way, either. Which is, aside from in-race strategy, also part of why you need a crew chief. Like, let's say you don't need race strategy and you just do whatever on track and it works for you. Sure, whatever. But personnel management and also someone who will say "hey, save the tires for after the RSN spot" is also critical.

Which is, ironically, exactly what Strip says to LMQ in that screenshot up there (while wearing his slicks). My point isn't that this whole tires situation offers any new information, but I love it because it it reveals how deep the fissures run, particularly given that this minor logistical catastrophe with the tire change/interview combo is almost immediately succeeded by the major logistical catastrophe that is the focus of the film.
