This required the development of a new online application portal, through which SMEs could register their technology to assist Canada’s COVID‑19 response. By using Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Power Platform cloud solutions, the NRC was able to quickly create a new simplistic online portal that allowed Canadian SMEs to submit their proposed solutions in record speed. On April 22, 2020, the application portal went live – only five days after the program was officially announced. By the week of May 11, 2020, contracts were being put in place with recipients and first deposits were made.

In the healthcare sector, the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information moved nearly 4,000 healthcare workers to an Azure Virtual Desktop Environment and Microsoft Teams within five days. This provided their teams with a secure centralized repository for all COVID-19-related guidance, data, and information. Healthcare workers were able to screen patients for COVID-19 virtually, and their supply chain department can now order supplies remotely to ensure frontline workers have the resources they need to stay safe.

Nunavut is 2 million square kilometers and home to 38,000 people in 25 communities across three time zones. Apteryx Imaging Enters Government-Funded International Consortium Agreement with Trestle GmbH to Develop Artificial Intelligence Software Applications for Dentistry

  We are seeing an incredible amount of work with artificial intelligence in dentistry, especially in the analysis of radiographs.  Over the past couple of years, I've worked with several companies that are working on projects that will allow for the faster and potentially more accurate reading of x-rays by dental personnel.  Now comes this announcement from one of the industry leaders, Apteryx.

Apteryx Imaging Inc., a subsidiary of Planet DDS, is pleased to announce that it has recently entered into an agreement with German-based Trestle GmbH, (Trestle) to co-develop a set of software modules using AI and Deep Machine Learning (DML) designed to address critically important, common diagnostic use cases in the dental imaging space. Hardbacon secures funding to develop AI that predicts changes in the stock market

And another quick update about Montreal, Canada-based fintech startup Hardbacon: the company announced today it has obtained conditional funding of $50,000 for an artificial intelligence research and development project to predict stock prices. The grant is part of the National Research Council of Canada's Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP).

Hardbacon, a mobile budgeting and investment tracking app, is developing a stock rating system, which will leverage artificial intelligence to help investors select stocks. Ratings generated by artificial intelligence will appear in Hardbacon's mobile application, and will also be made available under license to financial institutions desiring to use such ratings or to offer them to their respective customers.

"Many Hardbacon users asked us to tell them what to invest in", stated Julien Brault, CEO of Hardbacon. Until now we had refused, until one of our employees presented us with a promising academic article that he had written about the possibility of using artificial intelligence to generate predictive ratings. We are grateful that the NRC IRAP has agreed to support this project."

Agricultural Enhancement Grant 2020 – Abbotsford Community Foundation

Though many businesses battle to survive these unprecedented times, we would like to share the good news with you. We are proud to announce that Eleos Robotics was granted $50,000 from the Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) through the Agriculture Enhancement Grants Program. This grant will help Eleos Robotics move forward amidst worldwide pandemic.

This year, the ACF committee “chose to focus on innovation with a preference to supporting new technologies in agriculture that demonstrate an environmental and sustainability component”.  Eleos Robotics successfully demonstrated how RoboWeeder will benefit the agricultural sector by providing them with the world’s most disruptive technology to herbicides.  

RoboWeeder is fully autonomous and most importantly, eco-friendly. By allowing RoboWeeder to work on the field, growers will be able to reduce their labour expenses, save time, increase productivity, and eliminate operational headaches, all of this while staying organic.

We are also proud to announce Eleos Robotics is receiving a wage subsidy of approximately $20,000.00

This subsidy is given by the NRC IRAP through the Innovation Assistance Program (IAP), a program designed to assist small and medium-sizes enterprises. Eleos Robotics will receive a 80% wage subsidy for their employees for the months of April and May 2020.
