A peripatetic dance track, ever shifting and reconfiguring, with one foot on the dance floor and the other at a hightop with a few good friends, the most fun thing about “Day After A Night With U” might actually be the game it plays - the story it tells - as the listener moves between the title and the song’s single lyric. Because the day after is proverbially a time for regrets, for recriminations, a time to worry or second-guess. But “I found/ A real one” is a joyous statement on its own, and as Eris chops and loops it through the track it becomes a triumphant one with the context of the title. It’s unexpected, a burbling chaotic sense of jubilation you may have doubted even in the moment. Because the day after is a time to celebrate, if and when you’ve spent the night with the right person - a time to rejoice and brag and maybe even relive the pleasures of the night itself. We all deserve our own real ones, whoever and wherever they may be; we all deserve to celebrate as ecstatically as Eris does here.

One of the joys of dance music, and a through-line of Eris Drew’s two 2022 singles, “Day After A Night With U” and “Heartbeat,” is the way it can convey emotion totally untranslated. There’s no pretense here, the plunging bassline simply is the sound of one’s stomach falling to their ass, the universal feeling of desire. A little keyboard melody bursts through, full of delirium and confidence, and the vocal samples -- one erotic panting, one the clarion call of “a real love” --  confirm the glorious whole, the union of physical and emotional expression. Eris Drew absolves us of the moralistic guilt of right and wrong, now and forever, finding instead that “real” thrives on the combination and rejection of both, everything tumbling and revving in a moment of heady lust.
