This week on Vivere 44 - spontaneous pet adoption?
Vreaz and his crew encounter a stowaway creature on their ship. This comic properly introduces Nurlot! (and fulfils my ulterior motive of fleshing out the crew more)
This is probably the most ambitious project I've done for this story. Don't know if I'll attempt something like this again, but I hope you guys enjoy it anyhow!
More on Sea Crawler pets here!

Fact #2 - Mudsifters (like Nurlot) were bred for the purpose of cleaning sand and mud out of shore-dweller homes by rapidly digging with their six disc-like feet. Every sea crawler knows not to stand behind a working mudsifter unless you want fistfuls of sand kicked in your face.
Mudsifters will often exhibit this 'digging' behaviour even without sand! If you put a mudsifter on any soft surface they will immediately start trying to dig (with little success, similar to how hognose snakes try to burrow into carpet). It looks very goofy and there are tons of videos online. Offworld mudsifter owners are advised to add a lot of sand to their enclosures for proper enrichment.

Shore-dweller pets typically help clean sand out of their homes, keep pests away, or help out on scavenging trips. Sometimes they even bring back shiny things, a by-product of the traits they were bred for. Mudsifters like Nurlot are good at finding things buried in the sand/mud.
Ocean-dwellers like to decorate their homes with stationary creatures. It stems from an ancient practice of wearing colourful things to ward off predators (like how decorator crabs use anemones and sponges). Some crawler cultures still do this, but more for tradition than survival.
