After marrying, he settled at Hammer Bakker in Northern Jutland and developed a preference for open air painting (he only worked summers) in Skagen and other heath and moor landscapes up north…

Facts about Frederick VI that live rent free in my head (that I simply must share) ft. a super sleepy Hopster

One of my current interests is a Danish King by the name of Frederick VI. I'm currently really tired, but really wanting to post about him. so this wont be as organized as i normally do. i'll try to avoid making it a wall of words, but this is probably going to be a word vomit.

Family/Romantic Life

this guy was a pretty caring dad, and I love that for him. This man fathered. generally a great dad. dare I say the epitome of a good dad from the time. especially given his less-than-good start in life.

his romantic life was one hell of a ride. like- he had a long-time mistress (of like- 30 years) with whom he would have an affair. but, during the Congress of Vienna, he cheated on both his wife and his long-time mistress with another woman. his mistress, Rikke, then cheated on him. That led to ever more soap opera-like stuff happening.

Man not only had legitimate (2) and illegitimate (5?) kids but took on another nine kids. Well, some of them were adults at the time, but still. basically, when his brother-in-law (a duke) died, he and a friend of said duke became the legal guardians of said kiddos. and from the sounds of it, it wasn't just throwing money at them. he actually interacted with them to a certain extent.

to piggyback on no. 3, he had agreed with his sister-in-law that one of the boys, Christian, would go to Copenhagen and attend the land cadet academy. Christian would go to Copenhagen one year after the decision. he didn't live with the monarch but did spend a fair amount of time with them. it is said the king was fond of him. unbeknownst to all of them, Christian would turn out to be Christian IX, the father-in-law of Europe.

he was a parsimonious guy, at least when it came to himself. he would wear his clothing until they were worn out. only then did he get a new one? two of his desks, both his personal one and the one for his aide are simplistic, and so are his things in general. even his rolling chair- which is in Fredericksborg castle, is worn out looking. hell- what I'm pretty sure was his own bed was nothing but an Iron camp bed! granted, he only spent a few days a week in it, as he was staying with his mistress. or his wife.

regarding his mistresses, he took really good care of them. I'm only uncertain about one- which is the French one he had at some point, which did produce a daughter. For the other two, however, it's pretty clear. the one woman he met in Vienna, Caroline Seufert, was granted a large pension from him. his long-time mistress, Rikke Dannemand, was given an apartment near him, and enough money to live a bourgeoise life. That was a far cry from Rikke's former life in Nyboder. My only problem with this was the sheer age gap between them. with Rikke, there was a 22-year age gap. with Seufert, it was 29 years. both women were under twenty when all of this started.

Political

he tended to not threaten people's lives. there was a case where one of the members of the chancellery, Anders Sandø Ørsted, who was a prominent critic of Frederick, and would often write about such criticisms. instead of exiling, punishing, or hell- even executing the guy, he just gave him the choice of his job or his pen. Ørsted chose his job.

was a gruff man (likely due to his upbringing) but quite generous with his people. notably, some of the most realistic small gifts I've seen in assorted Danish museums were given by him. For example, there is a little golden snuff box sitting in the National Museum of Denmark that he had given to somebody as a reward. It is small, intricate, and made of gold. but most of all, it was usable.

His reaction to the July Revolution was good. the November after it, constitutions were made for Schleswig and the Kingdom of Denmark- but the absolute monarchy was still in place. on top of that, 4 Advisory assemblies were created. One for each major region of Denmark. this was a very primitive version of what was desired (and what would come not long after) as the king still appointed a number of the members, and only 3% of the population got the right to vote.

He tended to overwork himself. sometimes until he got sick (like during the Vienna congress). he died still working. he also had the belief that no matter was too small for the king. this meant that he stuck his nose into a lot of paperwork he didn't necessarily need to worry about. this tended to elongate the completion of paperwork, but it did make him more aware of what was going on in the country, so there was some benefit.

Other

he built one of the finest gardens I have ever strolled in in Copenhagen. If you are on any servers with me, there's a 99% chance you've seen the pictures.

It's obvious that his strongest gene was his hair. In every portrait I've seen of his children, they're blonde. like- super blonde.

The man was stubborn as hell, not wanting to change too much. this tended to rear its ugly head from time to time, but he wasn't too stubborn to not kind of acknowledge his mistakes.

that was a word vomit... I do apologize. but thats all my sleepy brain can think of. I'll likely have more when i wake up tomorrow. and if i actually find the time, I can go into more detail. I just need to check the copyrights on a few of the books i have.

Tiden lever i bedste velgående på Ertholmene

Ertholmene er Danmark uden for kategori. Det er en håndfuld små klippeøer og skær, som ikke ligner noget andet, man ser andre steder i landet. Det er vor eneste skærgård. Yderst er Østerskær - Oster Skiær - som er landets østligste punkt, hvor solen står op 28 minutter før, der gør i Blåvand.

Når man går i land fra færgen fra Gudhjem, træder man lige ind i Danmarkshistorien. I 1684 besluttede Christian den 5. at der skulle etableres et fæstningsanlæg, som skulle holde svenskerne i skak - det gav automatisk navnet til den største af øerne. Hans søn, besluttede at udbygge fæstningen på naboøen - så fik den navnet Frederiksø.

De to øer er forbundet en bro og har begge nogle imponerende fæstningsanlæg med metertykke skanser bygget af tilhuggede granitsten. Det har været et gigantisk projekt, som har kostet liv og helbred for de straffefanger, som blev sat til at bygge dem.

Øerne administreres af Forsvarsministeriet og militæret har sat sit spor på øen. Den er reelt en kasserne og de gule huse omkring den eneste gade - Gaden - ligner husene i Nyboder og naturen er uberørt af menneskehånd. Vi skulle overlade genopretningen af vor natur og kultur til Forsvaret. De sætter pris på landets historie og lader naturen passe sig selv. Noget af Danmarks mest frodige natur er de militære øvelsesterræner. På Ertsholmene er også en koloni af sæler, som vi i øvrigt ikke så noget til.

Vi stopper op foran en sten i en af de eventyrlige bastioner - der er mejslet en tekst ind i stenen; budskabet er mere holdbart end en blogupdate men sværere at læse:

»Igiennem Guds hjelperige Haand er dette arbejde kommen udi Stand Wed Hr. Capt. Mathias Wihelm Tax. Lieut. Tyge Fredrik Stibolt. Lieut. Gregorius Højborne Sehested. Lieut. Christian West. Werckpase Herman Bahne Wolfzæhn, Skipper Peder Larsen. Bornholm anno MDCCXXXV.«

Teksten er altså fra 1735 og refererer til restaurerings - og udbygningsarbejde, som blev foretaget under Frederik den 5. Hvem der end fik det skrevet, turde ikke at tage hele æren; noget gik til Gud og noget til skipperen, som sejlede dem frem og tilbage til øerne.

Lidt sjovt, kaptajn Mathias Wihelm Tax, der havde det overordnede ansvar for byggearbejdet, var blevet hentet fra Helsingør, hvor han arbejdede med at skabe Kronborgs skanser ud mod Øresund. Og når jeg sammenligner, de store kampestens-konstruktioner i Helsingør, hvor jeg har gået tusindvis af gange, kan jeg se, at det er samme mand, som har været på spil.

Ofte skriver folk, at tiden står stille, når man kommer til Christiansø og Frederiksø - men det er helt forkert. Fordi man ikke har bygget på øen i århundreder, er det ikke det samme som, at tiden står stille. Tværtimod. Når man tager til Ertsholmene, bringer man sin egen tid med over til øerne, hvor den bliver sat i et 250 årigt perspektiv; ja mere end det, klipperne er skuret glatte af den seneste istid for 18.000 år siden; hold det op mod den nuværende klimakrise, har du ægte tid i bevægelse.

Næh, tiden på Ertsholmene har det strålende, og som der står på servietten fra Christiansø Gæstgiveri, hvor vi spiser Ruth's lokale sild: "Vi er ikke isolerede. Vi lever en pragtfuld tilværelse, som du godt kan misunde os"

Wanted to try Cafe Petersborg but we didn't manage to snag a seat. The place was fully booked out! Instead, we tried out luck at Restaurant Nyboder

Yes, it's everything in that menu!

🐟 The set includes various pickled herrings for the starters and toppings for smorrebrod - our favourite was the mustard version. it's mildly sweet with a little sourness. However, as it got to the end, I was quite overwhelmed by fish. Not a huge fan of their pickled fish but it's nice to have in smaller amounts

MAINS

🐷 Pork Roast

Skin is really crispy but the meat as a whole is somehow not as tender as SG's roasted pork. Maybe the cut was too thick for our liking? Still a good piece of meat.

🍽 Danish Meatballs

Quite decent, only 1 ball but that's enough.

🍄 Liverpate with Bacon and Champignon

Possibly my fav main. The pate is strong and earthy with a very savoury taste. Probably not suitable for everyone but we still love it. They gave such a huge block! Goes well with the bread and potatoes.

🥔 Boiled Potatoes

Not sure what's up with their taters but it's just so good! The texture if quite smooth (I guess it's a waxy potato). It just hits different from the usual potatoes. It's great how they get to eat this everyday!

🍚 Dessert - Risalamande with homemade cherry sauce

It's a tasty and almond-y rice pudding. SO GOOD. Not sure why I like it so much but it was a perfect way to end the meal. The sweet tart cherry sauce also adds another level of enjoyment to this dish.

We were bursting at the seams after this meal AND we only ordered for 1 pax. The waitress was also friendly, nice and really welcoming. Thank you for making our first restaurant meal a great one!

Das orangene Viertel Nyboder in Kopenhagen. Und was fällt mir da auf Bild 1 besonders ins Auge. Den Namen Fahrradstadt, kann man hier wohl absolut bestätigen. Auf Bild 3 ist das Edouard Suenson Memorial zu sehen.
