Day 11 | July 5
Our destination, an hour west of Kigali, is an array of enterprises operated by Sina Gerard. Described by Stephen Kinzer in his book A Thousand Hills, Mr. Gerard’s interests include restaurants, a bakery, a juice and wine factory, a school, a pig farm, and extensive land holdings.
We visited nearly all of them! We hiked the Nyirangarama countryside for several hours, ascending and descending the hills for which Rwanda is famous. Given all the sitting that we’ve been doing, and anticipating our Sunday/Monday flights back to Chicago, the exercise was welcome. We saw lots and lots of plants–sorghum, corn, sweet potatoes, strawberry, tomato and trees–macadamia and avocado. We encountered a wedding and were treated to an Ankole cow handling demonstration. We even had a chance to do a brief home visit, stopping in a house built by Mr. Gerard and warmly greeted by its occupant.
We made new friends along the way, including high school students at a school operated by College Fondation Sina Gerard.
We arrived back at the Iris Guest House at 6 pm.  For those who could still walk, dinner was at a nearby by pizza place.

This past weekend, I went to Sorwathe Tea Factory with some colleagues and friends. It is located in Kinihira which is just a few hours drive outside of Kigali. We stopped at Nyirangarama on the way for some Brochettes (typical Rwandese meat skewers, usually of goat meat).
The drive from Nyirangarama to Kinihiri was absolutely beautiful. The scenic views were exactly what you would see when you google image search Rwanda. The roads are not paved so it was super rocky, and I almost had motion sickness.
I learned from the factory tour that all tea - both green and black - are made from the same leaves! The difference between these tea types comes from the oxidation/fermentation process and what percentage of water is lost in this process. Another fascinating fact is that despite the massive amount of tea that is produced in Rwanda, only 10% of it is actually consumed locally. Therefore, almost all of the tea is exported and consumed outside of Rwanda.
After the tour we got to sample a variety of tea types, and we had the opportunity purchase the ones we liked best. I bought a box of the unorthodox tea because it was the most mild black tea that tasted the best out of all.
