She worked with oil and canvas. As a young adult, Ms. Nichols liked to sew her own clothes. She was following her dream to be a famous singer when she won the role of Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek. Eventually, she was ready to leave Star Trek to pursue her dreams with her new husband and son, Kyle Johnson (who would become a star in Gordon Park’s motion picture, The Learning Tree). On hearing her plans to move on with her life, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King asked her to stay on the show and continue as the role model for young Black women; she agreed to stay. I met Nichole Nichols in 2015, unlike most celebrities at comicons, she let me take a picture after she signed her autograph. While kneeling next to her, we were making small talk, she was so nice and seemed genuine with our conversation. I shot Nichelle Nichols a number of times over the years. She was such a lovely soul. It was always a joy to have a conversation with her. The photo you see here was soon after she'd taken a NASA weightless flight usually reserved for training astronauts. I was so excited for her getting to have that experience at her age and I was duly impressed she did it! Nichelle was the first person of African American heritage to be featured in a permanent role on TV. It just happened to be on my favorite show in the world at the time. It bolstered the idea the world of the future was a racially mixed/egalitarian society where everyone had an important part to play in that world. She had the first on-screen interracial kiss with William Shatner. Her character had an insightful presence on the main deck, she was an officer and played a critical part in the Enterprise's story. Her character Nyota Uhura changed how people perceived people of color and women for the better. Nichelle was a special light that can still guide us. I'm so glad I got to meet her before she passed.
