Cookie Decorating Disaster
CW: This fic contains mild profanity.
Christmas is among Opal’s favorite times of year for many reasons.
Obviously, the first reason is because it is a present giving holiday. Throughout the month leading up to Christmas Eve, Opal and her friends find items that suit each others’ interests, be they clothing, furniture, novelties, or antiques. To her, the number of presents one receives every year does not matter; as long as she likes her presents, she is satisfied.
Second, Christmastide is also focused on meeting not just one’s siblings or parents, but also more distant relatives, like second and third cousins. Every year, Opal gathers with other gemstones she knows, like Ruby and Emerald, for Christmas dinners and slumber parties, among other activities.
Finally, she likes baking, and in years past she has made candy cane cookies, chocolate crinkles, and Christmas cakes, among other baked goods. This year, Opal wanted to try baking gingerbread cookies, as she thought it would be cute to shape them to look like her. It was mid-morning on Christmas Eve, and Opal had just finished shaping the last of the three dozen “Gingerbread Opal”, as she called them. While they were baking in the oven, Opal sat at the kitchen table with a sketchbook and colored pencils as she figured out what she wanted her finished cookies to look like.
“Hmm… let’s see,” Opal thought to herself, tapping a green pencil on her chin. From the get go, Opal knew her gingerbread cookies would have a face, rosy cheeks, and a line of three buttons. The next thing to figure out was what icing colors she should use for the finished product. Obviously, knowing red, green, and white were traditional Christmas colors, she wanted to include those colors at least.
The rough draft formed slowly, with Opal settling for green buttons, a white outline on the body, and red “sleeves”. By the time she finished her sketch, the oven timer beeped, startling her.
“Alright! It’s like, time for the fun part!” Opal said in an excited tone. Getting up from the table with her sketchbook in one hand, she made her way towards the oven to turn off the timer. She then put her mitts on and took out each tray of cookies one by one, setting them on the pot holders she had already put on the counter. She then got out four pastry bags from the drawer, and proceeded to make one batch of icing for each, with the colors being red, green, white, and black. Although she couldn’t help her excitement, Opal took a few deep breaths to calm herself down and focus, wanting her final product to be as professional-looking as possible.
Grabbing the bag of black icing with trembling hands, Opal started by dotting the eyes on one of the cookies. Although they were slightly misplaced, Opal didn’t care, as she was dying to see the cookies finished. Next went on the cheeks, sleeves, and buttons. Like the eyes, they too were somewhat misplaced or misshaped. And then came the mouth and outline. This first cookie possessed a distorted frown instead of smile, and the body’s outline more resembled a misshaped circle than it paralleled the cookie’s edges. Opal was disappointed at what her first cookie looked like, and based on the frown, could tell the cookie was empathizing with her. She giggled softly at that thought, which reduced her stress a little. However, there were thirty five more cookies to go, meaning she had more chances to get a “perfect” cookie.
So Opal continued, but no matter how focused she was, her hands still trembled. The same errors from the first cookie were before: a squiggle or frown instead of a smile, misplaced eyes and buttons, and an outline that looked like a spiral. As the errors began to pile up on each other, her stress and frustration began to increase, and her hands trembled more, leading to more severe errors. The buttons didn’t line up, the face didn’t look like a face at all, and the outline looked more like a spiral. And so Opal became more stressed.
Finally, she was on cookie #35. The last few cookies were by far the worst she had made, more resembling a mess of color than the design she sketched out earlier. The block that toppled the tower came when it was time to do the mouth, as when she squeezed out the icing, it came out in a huge blob that covered the entire cookie.
Immediately after seeing the blob of icing, Opal threw the bag of white icing on the floor and stomped on it with her foot in rage, squeezing its content out on the floor. “DAMN IT!” Opal screamed as she continued to stomped on the pastry bag. “Why are you like this today?! If it weren’t for you being like, stupid, then this wouldn’t happen!” she ranted out, pointing to the ruined cookie to get her point across.
Opal froze when she felt something on her foot. Looking down and lifting it, she noticed some icing on it, and shifting her view downwards, found an even bigger mass of icing on the floor.
“Well, crap. Looks like my day’s been ruined,” Opal spoke in a cold, quiet tone. Grabbing a paper towel, she used it to pick the mass of icing off the floor and place it in the trash can. She then grabbed her mop and wetted it to wipe the floor, then dried it with a bath towel. Taking the towel with her, Opal went to the bathtub to clean the icing off her foot. Placing her foot under the tub’s faucet, she turned it on and squeezed a small amount of body wash on her hand. She massaged her foot with the body wash under the faucet until all the icing was removed, then turned the faucet off. She then stepped out of the bathtub and used the towel to dry the foot off before hanging it up.
Those few minutes away from a stressful activity gave her time to release her thoughts in a more constructive manner, as when she walked out of the bathroom, she was more relaxed and her tremors had mostly disappeared. The first thing she noticed was the almost-empty pastry bag. Picking it back up, she squeezed what was left towards the bottom and surmised there was just enough to do the final cookie. As she prepared to do that, she then noticed the blob of icing on the previous cookie. “Hold on,” she thought to herself, remembering something important, “there should be someone who like, tastes them”. And so Opal took the “ruined” cookie and licked off the icing. The taste of vanilla made her smile and suppress the stress that had built up in her that morning. Opal then took a bite out of the cookie and found it to be many times more delicious than store-bought gingerbread cookies. “Does the icing really matter?” she spoke to herself quietly. “you just put it on for like, decoration, so should the sloppy faces on some of them automatically mean it’s bad?” As Opal finished the cookie, she had come to a realization and smiled. “No, Opal. You actually did pretty well on the actual recipe for a first time run.”
With her confidence in herself returned, Opal took a deep breath and expelled it slowly as she began to finish the final cookie. Going more slowly than before, she added on the eyes, cheeks, buttons, sleeves, mouth, and outline in that order. While this cookie was not exactly lined up either, it looked the most like how she envisioned it. Out of thirty six trials, one had led to results that looked pleasing. But all of them were equally great in how they tasted.

I spent seven hours on this drawing as you can see. 57 layers is also alot more then I normally have 😧 (Its usually about 35-40)
.
I have had the idea for this drawing for a long, LONG while, I just didn't have the strength to actually draw it until now. Figured I might aswell have two posts this month so boom :3 . I'm putting together something else so. Expect something in a few days :p
.
Basically, there's this thing in Pip's family called Shadows. Most of em are evil, but there's two who are good - Merripen and Zoonies (Zoonies belongs to Random, tagged). Merripen is the mentor for those who hold something called a "Shadow Form", granted to one family member every five generations apart.
Pip has that form.
The Shadow Form also has an "extra boost" mode, one that turns the Shadow Form into something bigger; The Titan.
.
So this is Titan, inspired by Obsidian from Steven Universe 😭🤲. I've been working on Pip's lore for SO fucking long, I could go on for hours tbh-
.
Gayser (Rainbow eraser )belongs to __cowjoy__ (On Instagram)
Acid (Green bottle) belongs to Randomfan20 (On Instagram)
.
That's it for this post though! Tags :p ! :
