By • Olalekan Fagbade Subsidy Removal: Nigeria making over N1trillion monthly revenue inflow – Federal Government The Minister of Finance, Mr Wale Edun says that the Federation Account is witnessing improved revenue inflow since the removal of subsidy from average of N650 million monthly to over N1 trillion in the last four months. The minister stated this on Monday in Asaba at the opening ceremony of a four-day retreat organised for members of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) . The minister, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Finance, Special Duties, Mr Okokon Udo said the government had for long, realised that petroleum subsidy was not sustainable. According to him, subsidy regime eroded revenues that should had been available to fund viable expenditures that were critical to the well-being of the populace. The minister said the present administration was mindful of the needs and welfare of Nigerians and assured that it would continue to implement peoples oriented policies.. “’We all know that achieving tax revenue to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) target of 22 per cent and tax to GDP of 18 per cent by 2026 are parts of the cardinal objectives of this administration. ”However, in doing that we appreciate the needs not to overburden the tax payers by introducing so many new taxes. ”What is necessary to be done is to broaden the tax base, simplify and streamline tax administration for ease of collection,” he said. Edun added “Among the prior activities of this government after coming into office, was the constitution of a Presidential Committee of Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforns. “The committee has submitted an interim report which is full of optimism’’. The minister also noted that the present administration was not oblivious of the untold hardship faced by Nigerians, following the removal of fuel subsidy, and harmonisation of exchange rates. He reassured that all the sacrifices made by people would never be in vain. ”Government is bent on ensuring that the economy bounces back to normal as we continue to consolidate on recovery efforts with focusing on achieving inclusive economic growth and development,” he added. Edun said that President Bola Tinubu-led administration has so far put in place a well-structured palliative measures to cushion the economic consequences of the ongoing reforms. On the theme of theme of the Retreat, ”Creating a Resilient Economic through Diversification of the Nation’s Revenue”, the minister commended the choice, stressing that it was suitabl. Edun also noted that retreat clearly outlined the urgent need to diversify the nation’s economy. In an opening remark, Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta tasked the federal government to muster the political will by putting necessary policy and institutional framework in place to diversify the nation’s economy. The governor, represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme said that there was no magic wand to diversify the nation’s economy from over dependence on revenue from crude oil unless concerted efforts were made in other key sectors. He noted that the diversification of the nation’s economy must go beyond mere rhetoric to concrete measurable steps by facilitating the non-oil exports such as agricultural products, manufactured goods and services as well as the expansion of the revenue base. Oborevwori affirmed that Delta was taking the lead to diversify its economy by creating a Trade and Export unit to drive the process in order to make economic diversification a reality. He noted that some schools of thought believed that the discovery of crude oil which led to the neglect of agriculture and other revenue yielding non-oil sectors of the economy was a curse. Oborevwori said the country had not properly managed its oil wealth adding that it was worrisome that the oil sector contributed between five per cent and seven per cent of the nation’s GDP. He added that the non-oil sector mostly agriculture, agribusiness,
manufacturing and small scale enterprises contributed 93 per cent to 95 per cent, yet the bulk of public revenue was from the oil and gas sector. ”Statistics have made it more exigent for the government to grow the non-oil sector to widen the revenue base, nwhile ensuring that maximum benefits were derived from the e oil industry,” he said. The governor commended FAAC committee for its commitment to duty by enhancing revenue accruals into the federation account. He urged the committee to look into the payment of 13 per cent derivation to oil producing states. Oborevwori challenged the committee to use the retreat to address the concerns raised by stakeholders in respect of the new roles of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, among others by giving better understanding on their roles in the economic diversification of the country. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Accountant Generals from the thirty six states and the FCT as well as other stakeholders such as the Customs are attending the retreat.(NAN)

[ad_1] Former governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan has called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state to support the presidential and vice presidential candidates of the party in the forthcoming 2023 elections, Njenje Media News reports. Uduaghan made the call during a remark at the PDP Delta South Leadership meeting held at his residence in Warri, Delta State. The PDP Delta South Leadership held the meeting to flag off its ward-to-ward campaign for the 2023 general elections. Dr Uduaghan said the meeting is a major “reconciliation meeting” for the party. “I want to plead with us. Make we be like water. Water nor get enemy. When you quarrel, fight and God say this is what I want, let’s respect that position,” he remarked. The former governor urged Deltans to thank God for the privilege to have someone in the position of a vice presidential candidate from the state. According to him: “We have no option but to support him. Nobody [from our state] has held that position.” He urged Deltans to give their maximum support to the PDP, stating: “Ibori is our national leader. Virtually all of us are still members of that family.” Dr Uduaghan also drummed support for the governorship candidate of the party, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orovwedor Oborevwori, while avowing that anyone who is not ready to work for the PDP candidates should step aside. Explaining why the PDP governorship candidate is the better option, Uduaghan avowed that the PDP candidate can be held accountable if he is supported. The candidate of the other party cannot be approached or held accountable, he insisted. He also canvassed support for the Delta South Senatorial candidate of the PDP, Hon. Michael Diden aka Ejele saying “it’s morally, spiritually and devilishly wrong for us to work against him.” While urging members of the party to concentrate on their units and deliver votes for their candidates in the forthcoming elections, he also appealed to the party faithful to shun “unnecessary rumours” that could further divide the party. Earlier, the PDP chairman in Delta South Senatorial District, Hon. Julius Takeme said the party is ready to go into electioneering campaigns on Monday, November 14. He urged party members to prepare themselves in the 87 wards in the senatorial district to win the election massively. Takeme also commended Uduaghan for playing a fatherly role to all of them, especially in the Delta South Senatorial District. The Director-General of the campaign organization in Delta State, Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon also urged party members to work in unity to win the elections while appealing to Dr Uduaghan to forgive members of the party that trespassed. “Your Excellency, please, forgive us our sins. Many of us have sinned against you,” he stated. [ad_2]

Nigeria: Ijaw National Congress demands resources control
Tumblr media
The Ijaw National Congress (IYC) on Friday called for the amendment of the 1999 Constitution to allow states control and harness natural resources in their areas, noting that with the illegal mining activities in the north, the Niger Delta should also be allowed to carry out the exploration for crude oil.
National President of the IYC, Roland Owelaemi in a statement, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent, said given the mining of solid minerals belonging to the nation in parts of the north, the IYC would not hesitate in its drive for states in the Niger Delta to exercise control over resources in their land.
He stated that “with the rather surprising news of Illegal mining action in the northern part of the country where mining activities are ongoing and powerful individuals are allowed to tap the natural resources in their domain, the IYC is calling on the federal government to commence the amendment of the constitution by allowing states to harness and control their resources in their land.
This call has become necessary because the Niger Delta people want to control the resources in their land, since solid minerals exploration in the north has now been reduced to individuals ownership in spite of the enabling laws in the country vesting ownership of natural resources on the federal government.”
The group stated that despite the fact that illegal mining activities are causing crisis in the north, the federal government has not deemed it fit to set up a military joint task force to checkmate the illegal activities because the solid minerals in the country are seen as private owned by some persons in the north.
It added that “it’s either the federal government restructures the country by allowing states to harness and control the resources in their domain or we will take every step necessary to exercise control over the resources in our fatherland.”
Meanwhile, as the effects of the lingering power blackout in Orerokpe, headquarters of Okpe Local Government Area of Delta state continues to bite harder, a social- political group, known as Form For Democracy and Development (FODD) has called on Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Sheriff Oborevwori to intervene so as to restore power supply to the
