A Story of Dakota and Cavendish and the adulthood on Milo’s S2
They are the best part of the show and I have to admit, since I met them, Milo’s main adventures stepped aside in my brain.
So I watched Milo Murphy’s Law first episodes on Disney XD, and fell in love. The weirdness, the creativity, the unexpected, how things could always and would always get crazier, just like P&F but in it’s own, wholesome, chaotic way.
Then I recall meeting the best anacronical dynamic duo, and fell in love a little more.
But then... I saw the Dakota Island. And shit got serious.
I mean, I would have NEVER expected this kIDs sHoW to show (redundance) real, explicit deaths, no falling into the mist and assuming their demise but ACTUAL EXPLICITLY MENTIONED DEATHS
DUDE WHAT
Even if it was for laughs, they were there, and Dakota would hurt every time it happened. And they showed it to me, a show that untill then had been mumbling about random super charismatic craziness and some time travel here and there. It’s as if in Phineas and Ferb Buford’s family had economical problems and Balgeet used his genious to work extremely hard and send anonymous donations every time they were too desperate to not accept them.
AND GRIEVE. They showed me Dak’s pain, as much as he was used to it. He would be sad, he would go back in time, he would spend the rest of his life imprisoned in an island the next time Cav died, rather than trying to move on with a normal life after his death. Even if it’s played for laughs some times, shit were serious.
They became what my main motivation to keep watching the series, although Milo’s adventures would always charm me in the way.
Actually, it was Dakota plus time travel
I’ve got to say that most of the time I felt like Cavendish didn’t deserve him. I mean, he seemed to look down on him all the time, pretending to teach him lessons about the right way of doing things and calling him selfish, while Dak acted clearly much more maturely in critical situations and had more common sense, as seen with the Counter-Agent Milo situation and the first time Milo went missing.
But here’s the thing: it is more recyprocal than it seemed.
I realized it in S2. Which is surprising because it was especially during that season that Cav became obsessed with saving the world and Dak was at his peak of maturity and down-to-earthness (the I could fix things but not anymore conversation was so strong). Then Cav left, and we see a very depressed Dak who is restlessly trying to find Cavendish, hurt because of the abandonment but missing him so much.
There he explains why Cav is so precious to him: he is the one that takes him through “less self-destructive” ways, helps him take care of himself. Cav fixes his messes and has a lot of patience with him (dear vinni is not the easiest person to have around either) (the toddler incident for example). Cav is, above all, kind and considerate, being the well-being of others his top priority when the situation demands it (though less assertively than Dakota) and valuing and respecting those who do the same (which was actually why their friendship was born). In this line, he really respects Dakota.
All of this without mentioning the 7 years that they have been together (since when Milo and Melissa were 6 to the present, though I think it would depend on.. more things). They are so used to have each other around, and it works.
I just finished watching the second season. The show grew, grew a lot, maybe too much for it’s audience. The Doof’s situation, Dak&Cav’s friendship, men having men problems (as you could call them in that universe). And I have to say, despite the fact that Doof’s episodes could get a little boring or even annoying, I loved that. But this post is about the anachronical duo, Doof can come later.
*Just to clarify: by men I mean adults who all happen to be men.
Men having men problems:
Dak & Cav losing their job, starting to work on something that wouldn’t allow them to something that they were so used to already: the possibility of going back and fixing things. If one of them died or messed up, there was no going back.
Cavendish having a crisis, feeling he is not doing what he is capable to achieve, frustrated by the intranscendence of his current doings. Dakota seeing him like that, worried about risking their stability, since it was him the one that the lack of time travelling had hit the hardest (because of the island situation, and probably most of his recklessness when breaking regulations came from knowing that he or Cav could go back and fix things if he messed up too hard).
Cavendish frustration before possibility of a more transcendental path, the unsuccesful result of doing it by a safe way (through his boss, which would have guaranteed stability), his consequential and vehement desire for doing things outside the rules just like his partner used to enjoy, the renewed frustration before the reluctance of that very same partner to take the risk, and his putting Dakota’s safety and stability above all by not letting him know where he was going so Dak wouldn’t follow him and risk losing his job.
Dakota’s feeling of abandonment and lonliness
It was beautiful
I loved all of that, and as I said in another post, it saddened me that they didn’t try that kind of development with the 13yo. That is such a complicated age, growth guaranteed for everyone. I’m not asking for the series to become a teen drama, nor I’m asking anything at all. I would just have enjoyed a little more if the teens had had experiences like those, since we were doing it with the adults already. Maybe they wanted to keep it light for kids and heavy for grown-ups? I don’t know.
Let’s just pray and scream for a new season, and a new chance to see those teens grow (or not, no problem) and, of course, new crazy adventures of Milo and his people.

Chapter 1
"It's cold in here." Hannah breathes out, touching her face.
Her ears are still ringing and her head hurts like hell.
The only evidence of light is the dim florescent bulb hanging by a chain from the ceiling. It's the only comforting thing in this place.
Hannah begins to rub her hands rapidly together, as she blows into them. She's sitting in front of a metal table, waiting for someone to arrive.
Suddenly a name comes to mind.
"JUNG-HOON?", she whispers in the darkness.
She faintly touches her cheek and chews on her bottom lip, trying to recollect that name and where she had heard it before.
----
Do you remember where you were for the last 24 hours, when you went missing?
The police detective asked her.
He leans over the table, determined to get as much information out her.
It was night...when someone found you walking along the small interstate. He continued talking, flipping through another page in his notebook.
It was hard to see...the trees started to look all the same to me after a while. It seemed like I walked for miles. I was tired and freezing. Hannah mumbled. She was pulling at the bottom of her shirt uncomfortably.
And then? The detective asked, his eyebrows raising with interest.
I saw light. It was coming from the road. I realize the lights were from the headlights of the cars passing by. Hannah smirked, looking down.
You collapsed along the side of the road and someone drove by and saw you lying there. He explained, as the detective chewed on the end of his ink felt pen.
Your eyes lingered on his rough, calloused hands. His finger nails were cut down to the nub. They were trembling too.
He must be nervous. She thought.
We understand that this may be difficult for you but we need to know if you have anymore details on this matter? He pressured Hannah to answer.
Anything...at all? The detective almost appeared to be glaring at her.
You...You don't believe me? She stuttered out. Do you?
The detective sighed, drumming his fingers quickly against the table surface.
Mrs. Hannah...? Do you know there was 3 other woman before you, who disappeared? They went missing days ago. Do you know what they have in common with you? He peered suspiciously into Hannah's chocolate doe eyes.
No...She answered.
They are all around the same age as you. The same height, build, and the same hair style. He further explained.
And they....were all found in the forest behind you. He finished.
Hannah eyes darted nervously to the steel table in front of her.
"It sounds like to us, you were one of the lucky ones.",he sighed.
His voice didn't match his words though. He sounded like he cared, but she knew he didn't sympathize with her.
The only thing that differs you from them is you're here.
What is that supposed to mean, sir?
"They're dead, Hannah." "Each girl was found with lacerations around the neck, wrist, and ankles. They all died from asphyxiation. Do you know what that means? They all suffocated to death.
"How"?, she asked.
They were strangled, he replied coldly.
Hannah eyes widened in disbelief.
Thats why I said you were fortunate. When they found you, your clothes were shredded and you were barefooted, however you did not have a single scratch on your body like those other women. I find it odd.
I'm not sure if you being there was a coincidence, but it is awfully strange that you were there.
Sir...Mr. detective, what do you want from me?
I want to know if you remember anything. If you recall where you were during that night and if you might have seen these girls before. He said, placing down pictures of the women before their deaths. Can you try to remember for me?, he sighed.
Suddenly the door bangs open and in storms in is a petite, young woman with straight black Bob haircut and feline jet black like eyes. She has delicate facial features but her expression was anything but. She looked furious.
Ah! Chun-hei!! The man hollered in surprise.
How long do you plan to interrogate her, Dak-ho? She snapped back at him.
Yah!! The girl is terrified. She experienced enough trauma for the past couple of days. Will you let her rest? She's not a suspect. She's a victim. She sighed, gritting her teeth.
She sat down next to him.
Ok. Ok. He mumbled, holding up his hands.
Chun-hei, you win, alright? Maybe I went to hard on her. He murmured.
All the while, Hannah was witnessing their back and forth banter. She grew embarrassed by it.
You think Dak-ho? She said in a sarcastic voice.
Mrs. Park, my sincerest apologies. I must have overreacted a little. Please don't take offense to what I said. I'm simply concerned. Those women...they didn't even have a chance like you. He further explained.
Chun-hei eyebrows knitted. She folded her arms against her chest.
You're being unreasonable. She muttered back.
Can I finish at least?, he asked Chun-hei.
"Ok.", she replied, rolling her eyes.
They weren't dead long, Miss Park. They were... He trailed off wearily. His eyes began growing watery.
Killed recently? Hannah completed his sentence.
Do you both think I was involved in their deaths? She questioned them.
No..we don't. Chun-hei cuts in.
We don't have all the facts. We need any glimpse of hope. A memory, anything? He replied quickly.
Hannah noticed he was becoming too overly emotional now. This was affecting the detective.
I said let it go. Chun-hei hissed, kicking his foot from underneath the small table.
Can..I go now? Hannah asked, lifting her head.
I'm afraid that's impossible. Dak-ho uttered out.
Why? Hannah looked straight into their eyes.
It's too dangerous, that's why. Miss Park. Chun-hei answered softly. You're safety is currently our top priority at the moment.
My safety? Hannah repeated in confusion.
Chun-hei nodded her head. You will be under our care until further notice.
Please excuse us Mrs. Park. We will discuss this matter later. Chun-hei said, standing up with the detective.
-------
Get a grip of yourself!! Chun-hei scolded Dak-ho, pulling on his sleeve tightly.
I shouldn't have let you head this investigation. You're getting too obsessed about it. She mumbled under her breath.
No! I want to do this!! He urged her.
She rolled her eyes.
I understand why you are taking this seriously. I know this hits close to home. That's why I prefer you wouldn't intervene anymore. There are plenty of investigators, who would be happy to take your place. Chun-hei said, dropping her gaze.
I can handle this. Please. He insisted in a confident voice.
You want to find him. Don't you? This case reminds you of your sisters, who went missing many years ago? Except they weren't able to find a body then? She replied.
Dak-ho clinched his jaw tightly.
You wanted to break down in there. You can't do that in front of a potential witness. You need to be professional. She argued, with her hands on her waist.
Listen, Dak-ho, this is not your sister's case. It may even be unrelated. You need to get a hold of your senses. You also need to be more kind to the girl. She may be the only key to this whole case. Ok? She explained.
Dak-ho nodded his head obediently. I'm sorry, Mrs. Choi. He said, bowing.
Choi? Chun-hei laughed.
You don't have to talk to me in such a manner. I am not an old lady. Besides, You are even older than me. She replied, smirking.
But you are still my subordinate. He says quietly.
Chun-hei scoffed at his answer.
Its getting late Mr. Jung. She looked at him.
You need rest. Chun-hei smiled, turning away.
