A/N: Yay, another chapter is here! This one is a slight filler as I get things figured out for the next couple episodes in the show and it is shorter than usual, but I'm still happy with how it turned out 😊 Enjoy!!

All chapters (Part 2) (Part 1)

Explanation: Kimber's rest is interrupted by a new nightmare and she and Hunter share some late night thoughts.

That night, despite the joy she had felt upon falling asleep in Hunter's arms again, Kimber's mind was plagued by past memories in her slumber...memories of Crosshair.

In what appeared to be a misty cloud before her, she saw the Bad Batch entering the med bay room on Coruscant, the first day they met.

"This is Crosshair," said Echo's voice.

Then Tech saying, "Crosshair has excellent farsight and is an expert sniper."

Her own voice responded, "I'm a bit of a sharpshooter myself."

Crosshair's eyebrows shot up as he asked her record and when she answered, "Twelve klicks," he grimaced as Wrecker teased him about her having him beat by two klicks.

The dream shifted and she saw the two of them walking together before their first mission.

"Think you can keep up?" Crosshair asked her.

She asked back playfully, "With the squad or with you, Crosshair?"

Then she saw the two of them just about to board the Marauder when she asked him, "I need to know: why have you been calling me 'sunshine'?"

He responded saying he thought it was obvious and pointing up to the twin suns of Tatooine.

Another scene appeared and Kimber saw the two of them sitting together on a cliff's edge, the first time they'd watched the sunset together.

"I think you guys are great just the way you are," she said with a sweet smile.

"Famous last words, sunshine. You'll change your mind about that before long...especially about me," he said back.

"You may not like yourself, Crosshair...but I like you."

Then she watched Crosshair shooting down Carson on Kuat and heard his voice: "I don't regret what I did...I would blast that Rodian a thousand times over to protect you with no regrets."

Crosshair began looking over Kimber for signs of harm and she heard Hunter's voice say, "Thank you."

As she then burst into tears and fell against Crosshair, who embraced her closely for comfort, his voice spoke again, "She's not just yours to protect, Hunter...we all protect her."

Just then, things changed and Kimber heard a blaster fire and before her was Crosshair in his blacks, clutching at his side before collapsing to the ground after she'd accidentally shot him.

Her own voice crying out in terror, "I killed him! I killed Crosshair!"

Then she saw her and Hunter outside in the night and he told her, "Kimber, Crosshair is alive!"

Crosshair's voice spoke around her, "I don't hate you...I could never."

Everything changed yet again and she saw just her and Crosshair again.

"How is it you know me so well?" he asked.

Her reply: "We're partners. It's part of our job to be able to read each other."

Then it was the two of them in Hunter's bunk, Crosshair holding her by the arm as he urged her, "Partners don't keep secrets. They trust each other."

Another shift and there they were in the cockpit of the Marauder and Crosshair was turning away from her.

"Don't you turn your back on me!" she cried.

"Why not? You turned your back on me by not trusting me."

Then his voice from a different time echoed around her, "War changes us and sometimes, we're faced with choices we don't want to make, some of them questionable."

Then his voice changed again: "The things I do for you, sunshine."

"You wouldn't keep doing things for me if you didn't adore me, Crosshair."

Kimber's own voice sounded again from a different time as flashes of her and Crosshair fighting side by side played before her eyes: "You've been a great teacher, but you're not getting rid of me as a partner anytime soon. We're the eyes in the sky, Crosshair. I'm not about to give that up. Not ever."

More memories appeared, more clearly than the rest: Crosshair giving Kimber a purple wildflower, the two of them embracing each other, him playfully shoving her and her laughing back at him, both of them training together, them riding on a speederbike back on Bestine, her resting her head on his shoulder while watching the sunset; several moments of just the two of them together.

While they went on, she heard Crosshair's voice all around her: "I know we have not always agreed on everything and there most likely will be more things we won’t agree on in the future, but if there’s one thing I know for sure: it’s that you’re no longer the helpless desert-dweller we found all those months ago and I trust you completely...I wouldn’t want anyone else at my side as my partner. Or as…my sister…and ever since Kuat, that is how I have viewed you, Kimber."

Kimber's eyes welled up with tears as she replied to him, “Oh Crosshair…you’re very much my brother to me, too…and I love you.”

"I know," he said. Then his voice went on to say as the cloud shifted, "Stay strong, sunshine. Don't worry about me."

The mist in front of Kimber transformed again and went dark for a moment as then the sound of Fives' warning was heard: "Something big is coming. Something that will change the galaxy as we know it..."

Then she heard Palpatine: "Execute Order 66."

Fives spoke again, "...when it happens, you need to be with your squad...because when this event goes down, you will all need to stay together if you're going to survive."

After that, Kimber heard Crosshair's voice, this time louder than everything else, "Good soldiers follow orders."

More memories of Crosshair appeared within the mist, but there was an ominous chill about Kimber as she saw them play out.

There was him and Hunter glowering at each other back on Onderon. Crosshair's voice: "Why am I not surprised you're defending him?"

There were more flashes suddenly of her and Hunter together, either smiling happily at each other or fighting Droids together, while Crosshair's voice continued speaking, "He wanted to give up, you know...your precious Sergeant was going to leave you for dead when the rest of us weren't willing to. He is less deserving of your trust."

Everything changed again and there was Crosshair, standing before her in his Imperial armor as clearly as if he was there in the flesh.

She heard herself ask in despair, "What has happened to you? What have they done to you?"

Crosshair answered, his tone cold and emotionless, "Come with me, Kimber. We can still be partners…for the Empire. There is no reason for you and I to be divided. We can both be Commanders of our own legions. We can stay together and fight side by side for a greater cause."

“Don’t do this, Crosshair. Please don’t go this way.”

“Don’t throw away the chance at finding your true purpose just to blindly follow him. Come with me, sister.”

“This is not the way things should be. I can’t…I won’t!” 

The scene before her went still and she heard her own voice speak again in the air, "What would I do without you?"

Crosshair's voice replied gently, "You won't have to find out...because I'm not going anywhere."

"Is that a promise?"

"I promise."

Then Crosshair in front of her moved, fired his shot at her and her side burst with pain.

With a jolt, Kimber's eyes burst open as she awoke from her troubled sleep, her breathing heavy and labored. Her cheeks felt cold and wet, making her realize that she had been crying. While it hadn't necessarily been a nightmare, she still had relived memories of Crosshair, both fond and terrible, that made her miss him so much more than she already did. The Crosshair he used to be. Her heart ached immensely and her hand clutched at her chest.

As she came back to reality, she was almost startled to hear Hunter speak beside her. Luckily, she hadn't had very many nightmares recently, but she'd gotten used to not having Hunter there to help her since her time on Coruscant. Now suddenly him being there again surprised her a little.

"Hey...you're okay," she heard Hunter say, sitting up next to her, putting one arm around her shoulders and placing his other hand on her cheek. "I'm here, my love. I'm here," he softly told her as he brought her gaze to his, his thumbs brushing away her tears.

As her breathing calmed, she replied, "I'll have to get used to this again...having you here when I have a bad dream."

Hunter reverently kissed her forehead. “I’ll always be here,” he told her. “What happened?”

She hesitated briefly, unsure if Hunter would want to actually discuss anything about Crosshair. Though she was more unsure if even she wanted to discuss Crosshair just yet. Bringing her knees up to her chest and wrapping her arms around her legs, she simply answered, “Nothing necessarily happened this time. It was just...memories...both good and bad.”

“I see,” he said, rubbing her back to help console her. He could still sense the racing of her heart; whatever it was she had seen in her dream had gotten her worked up pretty good. 

Just then, her blaster wound, though it was mostly healed thanks to some bacta treatment, twinged a bit in her side and she winced, sucking in the air between her teeth and gasping as she clutched at her side. The two of them had changed back into their blacks before going to sleep, so she couldn’t take a look at her side right away, but she pressed on it slightly through the fabric, hoping to relieve the pain. 

“Your wound?” Hunter asked.

Kimber nodded. “It still acts up from time to time.”

“Here, I’ll get the bacta gel,” he offered, already getting out of the bed. 

“No, Hunter, you don’t have--”

“I want to.”

Then, with a small reassuring smile, he walked out of the room, switching on the light as he left. Just after he walked out, Kimber let her head fall until it connected with her knees and silent tears fell from her eyes as she quietly cried for a moment. Even though things with Hunter were back to the way she wanted and she was happy, Crosshair was now gone and, having recalled so many memories of him, she wondered if she’d ever have true happiness again without him there. The squad was disjointed; there was a significant emptiness in the ship without their former squadmate. Kimber missed him so much, it pained her. How did they go from being so close to now so far apart? She still couldn’t understand what the Empire had done to him and she still found it hard to believe that he would betray them; betray her so easily. Did it have something to do with the chips Omega had mentioned before? The kid hadn’t mentioned much about them, so it was hard to say, but that seemed to be the only thing they had to go off of. Either way, Crosshair was still with the Empire and Kimber failed to understand why.

“Brother…what happened to you?” she inquired sadly in her mind. 

Then she could hear Hunter coming back and quickly brushed her excess tears away before he came in. He closed the door behind him as he walked in, carrying a small tube in his hand.

“Lift up your shirt,” he told her as he unscrewed the lid off the tube and sat beside her on the edge of the cot. 

She did as he told her and lifted up the side of her shirt, revealing the large lighter-colored blast scar that covered over half of her side from where Crosshair had shot her. She could see Hunter tense up ever so slightly upon seeing it and she assumed he was recalling the moment she’d been shot and the fear he’d experienced thinking he’d lose her again. To remind him he hadn’t lost her, she took one of his hands, brought it up and held it against her chest over her heart. 

“I’m okay, Hunter. Feel me…I'm here with you,” she whispered.

A quiet hum escaped him as his expression softened. It had been a while since she’d done that with him, but it still worked as easily as it had before. The beating of her heart underneath his palm gave him the reassurance and the reminder he needed that she was alive, she was all right and they were still together. 

He gave her an understanding nod and then she released his hand so he could administer the bacta to her scarred side. Delicately, he applied a small dollop of the gel to her skin, causing her to flinch from the warm sensation of it at first. He rubbed it gently around the scar and the area on her side began to feel soothed from the medicinal gel. Hunter’s ministrations felt good, too, as he wasn’t pressing hard into her skin; he was being gentle and thorough as he worked the gel into her skin. 

“Does that feel better?” he asked as he concluded.

“Much better, yes,” she said back. “Thank you.” As he put the lid back on the bacta tube and she pulled her shirt back down, she asked him, “Did you happen to check on Omega when you went out there?”

“I did,” he said with a nod. “She was fast asleep.”

“Good.” Having brought up Omega made Kimber think of something that she thought was best to bring up while they had some time. “Hunter…I need you to promise me something.”

Hunter looked at her curiously, but still replied, taking her hands, “Anything, sweetheart.”

She knew this wasn’t going to be an easy request for him, but she sighed and said nonetheless, “Now that Omega is with us…I need you to promise me that you will make her your priority now and should we ever end up in a situation where you have to choose between her or me…that you’ll choose her.”

His eyes flashed wide for a second at her statement. “Kimber…you can’t ask me that,” he tried protesting. 

“Yes, I can,” she replied, having none of it, “and you know I’m right. I am a grown woman, I’ve been trained by you and several others and I can handle myself. You know this. Omega is a child with no training at all. We are living in dangerous times and until we’re able to properly train her, she needs our protection; your protection. If something were to happen to her when you could’ve prevented it, you would regret it…and I would never forgive you.”

He looked astonished at that, as if she’d struck him in the face.

She went on, “I would rather lose my life knowing you had protected Omega than to lose her because you chose me.” She gripped his hands tighter. “I love you and I know you love me, but I’m not the one you need to keep safe anymore. I can do that on my own. Should we all end up in any danger at any time, you need to keep Omega safe and I need you to swear to me that you will.”

Hunter hung his head and sighed. He couldn’t deny that Kimber had raised some good points, despite how much he wanted to argue them. “I may not like the thought of you coming to harm…but you’re right,” he admitted. “I swear I will protect Omega first whenever the need arises.”

With a content smile, she leaned forward and kissed him gratefully. “Thank you, Hunter. I know this isn’t an easy choice, but you know it’s the right one.”

“I know,” he affirmed with a nod. “Though, I feel like every choice I’ve made that I thought was right have all turned out to be wrong.”

“Don’t say that,” she replied. “You’re doing the best you can and that’s all any of us can ask for.”

“Then why has everything been going wrong?”

“Nothing has been the same since Order 66. That’s all beyond our control. What is in our control is what we do as a squad moving forward and staying together. In this uncertain galaxy, the only thing we can be certain of is our squad and each other. Look at me, darling.” She reached up and carefully guided his face so she could look into his eyes before saying determinedly, “We’ll get through this, just like we always do.”

In response, Hunter wordlessly thanked her for her encouragement by taking Kimber’s hand on his cheek and pressing his lips inside her palm. 

Bringing up Order 66 brought another thought to Kimber’s mind in the moment. “I do hope Rex is okay,” she said. “He’s the only person we’ve actually heard anything about since Order 66.”

“Rex is a tough soldier,” said Hunter. “I’m sure he’s fine wherever he is.”

“I wish we knew where he was,” she said sadly. “I also wish I knew where the girls were right now. I hope the Empire hasn’t caught up to them.”

Hunter ran his hand down her hair and cupped the back of her head. “Those girls are some of the most clever people I’ve ever met. It would take great effort from the Empire to find them. I’m sure they’re all right, too.”

“I don’t dare try and make contact with them if I don’t have to, even though I want to,” Kimber told him. “I don’t want to risk the Empire intercepting our communications and putting them in danger.”

“Don’t you have an encrypted comm device that Rina gave you?” he asked.

She nodded. “I do, but…I just don’t want to take the risk.”

“I understand,” he said. “You know, Rina came to me about you…twice.”

Intrigued, she questioned, “Did she really?”

He gave a nod and explained, “Yeah, she gave me quite the stern lecture about how I needed to get over myself and just take you back.”

Kimber snickered. “That does sound like Rina.”

“The first time was right before she got sick and then the second time was when we sparred together. She got me to realize how much in denial I had been. She even threatened to take you with them if I lost the fight.”

Raising her eyebrows, she replied, “Oh, she wouldn’t have done that. They knew where I stood.”

“Yeah, but I didn’t know that. All I had was the fear of you leaving us…leaving me again,” he told her. “It gave me the drive I needed to beat her and prove to her that I would continue to fight for you.”

Kimber couldn’t help but grin and shake her head. “I should’ve known that’s what your guys’ sparring was about,” she said. 

“You’re lucky. She proved to be incredibly loyal to you,” he commented. 

“She really is…all of the girls proved that,” she agreed. “I don’t know how I managed to get so fortunate, but I don’t take it for granted."

“As well you shouldn’t,” he said, running his hand down her braid. He let her twisted hair slip through his fingers all the way as he said, watching it, “I love your braided hair, but I do miss seeing it all the way down sometimes.”

She smiled pleasantly. “You’re welcome to take it out of the braid, if you want,” she told him. 

There was a slight surprised look in his eyes for a second at her suggestion, but then a pleased grin crossed his face. He carefully pulled off the tie at the end of her braid draped over her shoulder and then handed it to her. He sat across from her and began delicately pulling the separate locks of hair apart from her braid, eyeing it carefully. The ginger movements of his fingers handling each part of her hair with precision and care as if it were made of glass caused Kimber to blush slightly at his attention. He was being so thoughtful, gentle and attentive, tending to her hair as if every strand was formed from precious gold. He got halfway up her braid when his eyes moved from her hair to her, gazing at her with great adoration like he always did and it still made her heart leap inside her to see that. Reverently, he continued working his hands through her hair, being careful not to pull too hard and hurt her head. As she continued to watch him, her heart swelled with overwhelming love for her Sergeant. His tenderness was one of the things she loved most about him and here he was, doing something seemingly insignificant to anyone else, but meant a great deal to her. There truly was no one else in the galaxy that she would want at her side. 

Finally, he reached the base of her head and pulled the last of the braid out, letting his hands weave through her long, soft, brown curls all the way to the ends and admiring his love with her hair now draping down past her shoulders like curled waterfalls, her amber eyes watching him with anticipation. He had always thought she was gorgeous no matter what, but there was something about the way her long curls framed her face and cascaded down her form that made her look truly beautiful and seemed to stir something within him that only made him love her even more than he ever believed possible. Gazing at her then, it dawned on him why that was. The first time he’d seen her hair let loose nicely like this was during their mission on Kuat when she was dressed in fancy attire to go undercover. He had been awestruck at how lovely she looked and she’d kept her hair like that throughout the rest of the night after the mission; their first night alone together…the night she had told him she loved him. Then she'd had that same lovely look the following night during their first night of passion. This look of hers was truly something special that he held close to his heart.

His hands came up and cradled her head affectionately as he spoke in a soft, loving voice, “Beautiful and perfect.” Then he gently pulled her forward, guided her head forward and pressed a firm, lingering kiss to her forehead.

Just as he pulled away, Kimber spoke before she realized what she was saying, “Hunter, I want to marry you.”

That was a statement that neither of them were expecting and Kimber froze up, not having meant to have said that out loud. “I’m sorry, I--I shouldn’t have said that,” she apologized, panicking slightly. 

However, with his gaze trained on her, he repeated in slight disbelief, “You…you want to marry me?”

Her eyes closed momentarily as she inwardly kicked herself for letting that slip, but there was no backtracking now. Then she opened her eyes and replied to him, “Yes…after meeting Cut and Suu and seeing what they had together as husband and wife…I found I wanted that for us, as well. I want to spend the rest of my life with you and it’s all I can think about. You told me you want to fight for a future with me and I want this as part of that future…but I know the timing is terrible, especially since we just got back together and right now certainly isn’t the right time to even be thinking about such a thing and I’m sorry, but I just--”

She was cut off as she found her mouth being smothered with Hunter’s, kissing her ever so sweetly that she practically melted into him immediately. 

When he broke the kiss, he stated, “Don’t you dare apologize,” before kissing her once more. Then he said, a bright gleam in his eyes, “You don’t know how happy it makes me to hear you say all this.” His hand traced her cheek and down her jaw. “Kimber, I want to marry you, too.”

Hearing those words brought the brightest, excited smile to Kimber’s face.

He went on, “I would love nothing more than to have you be my wife one day. You are right: the timing isn’t great and it’s not something we can feasibly do right now, but I at least want you to know that it’s on my mind, as well. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, no matter how much longer we have. Whether it’s weeks, months or years I have left, I want you with me through every moment. Hopefully, we’ll outlive the Empire so we can have the happy, normal life together that we’ve talked about.” He took her left hand and gently ran his thumb over her ring finger contemplatively before saying in conclusion, “I promise you, sweetheart, when things get better and the time is right...I will ask you properly.”

Still smiling brightly, she responded, “I’ve waited months to be with you again. I can certainly wait for this…because you, my Sergeant, are worth waiting for.” 

Then she threw her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly as his arms wrapped around her in return. They stayed like this in each other’s embrace for a minute, taking in the fact that they had just talked about eventually getting married, a huge step in their relationship. 

Kimber pulled back to look at Hunter, her arms still locked around his neck, as she asked with a hint of teasing in her voice, “Does this mean that we’re now engaged to be engaged?”

With an amused snicker, Hunter simply replied, “However you want to see it, sweetheart.”

She chuckled back and then touched her forehead to his. “I love you…more than the galaxy loves its stars,” she told him softly. 

Nudging her nose lightly with his, he replied, “I love you more than Wrecker loves explosives.”

That comment made Kimber quietly laugh and she fell forward, her head finding rest on his shoulder. “Oh Hunter…!” she said through an amused giggle, shaking her head against the crook of his neck.

“I couldn’t think of anything that would compare,” he justified with a light shrug. 

She lifted her head, still smiling. “You’re hopeless, darling,” she sighed. 

“Hopelessly in love,” he said. 

Then he halted any reply she was about to give with his mouth meeting hers in another fervent kiss. Her arms gently pulled down on his neck as she laid back down on the cot, pulling him with her as their kissing continued for a moment. 

“We should go back to sleep,” he then suggested, his mouth hovering just over hers.

Shaking her head, she protested, “Not yet…I just want to kiss you for a while.”

Hunter grinned, pleased at what he heard from her, and repositioned so he was all the way over top of her. “As my love wishes,” he replied in a sultry voice before returning his lips to hers and kissing her once more, continuing this way for a good, long while before their tiredness returned and overcame them again.

Just as Kimber was about to drift off to sleep once again in Hunter’s arms, her thoughts drifted back to her dream; her memories of Crosshair. Specifically the one where he had promised her that he wouldn’t go anywhere. That had been a promise she believed he would keep and yet, it was the one he broke quicker than anything else. Despite the fact that her trust in him was lost, she was grateful to know that she could still trust Hunter and his word. He had sworn to make protecting Omega his priority and to one day properly ask her to marry him. Those were vows she believed wholeheartedly.

That night had been a night full of promises: of realized broken promises and promises made anew.

Carson Hunter has had a chaotic life since the beginning. The only daughter in a family of men, Carson was raised to be ‘one of the boys’. Unfortunately for her family, she hated it. While her brothers played football in backyard after school, she often snuck over to her neighbor’s house and spent time with Mx. Walsh’s house. Mx. Walsh loved having a youngin’ around to talk to and often spent time teaching her about science and computers, talking about her work as a forensic scientist. Carson loved having the one-on-one time and took to science like it was a second language, even if computers were a bit harder for her.

Things were good for years, and then the worst happened: Mx. Walsh passed away, leaving Carson without her mentor. Luckily, her family understood the devastation she was feeling and became a great shoulder to cry on. Determined to do something with her life that Mx. Walsh would approve of, Carson decided to follow their path and go into forensic science.

When a position at NCIS opens up looking for a new Assistant Forensic Scientist, Carson leaps at the chance to work within the city for the Navy, where her father spent most of early years working under. But working for NCIS is more complicated than she expected, given Abby’s cold attitude, Tony’s unending flirting, and Gibb’s standoffish nature. But with McGee’s welcoming of having a new newbie on the team and Ziva’s - well, everything about Ziva, holy shit - Carson is certain she’ll be able to make this place a home for herself.
