Maryland coach DJ Durkin placed on administrative leave

Questions have surrounded Durkin’s program since lineman Jordan McNair’s death in June.

Maryland is putting head football coach DJ Durkin on administrative leave while an investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding the death of player Jordan McNair. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada will be the interim head coach.

Maryland football coach DJ Durkin has been placed on administrative leave and OC Matt Canada will take over as interim head coach, AD Damon Evans announced.

Durkin, 40, had been Maryland’s coach since the 2016 season. A former defensive coordinator at Michigan and Florida, Durkin was an understudy of both Jim Harbaugh and Urban Meyer. He improved Maryland’s recruiting considerably and made a bowl game in his first season before injuries and a hard schedule dropped the Terps to 4-8 in 2017.

He was 10-15 in his two years, but his departure isn’t because of the on-field results. In June, McNair died after collapsing during a team workout on May 30. McNair’s death brought more questions than answers about the program’s handling of his health. McNair, who was a listed 325 pounds as a freshman, struggled amid a series of 10 110-yard sprints in hot weather. The university commissioned an ongoing external review of the circumstances surrounding McNair’s death.

Things got worse for Durkin and the rest of his program in mid-August, when an explosive ESPN report detailed borderline abusive motivation practices within the program and a pervasive culture of pushing players dangerously beyond their limits.

“My heart is broken for the reason that we’re all even sitting here having this press conference,” Durkin said on June 14, a day after McNair’s death. “You look for reasons. It’s not reasonable that a 19-year-old should pass away. It’s not reasonable that a family, his parents Marty and Tonya, should ever have to go through this.”

Current Maryland athletic director Damon Evans is not the man who hired Durkin. That was Kevin Anderson, the AD who went on what the school called a six-month “sabbatical” after reports of his sudden firing broke on the first weekend of the football season.

Evans was promoted to permanent athletic director in June, after McNair’s death but before ESPN’s reporting about Maryland’s culture.

Who would you say are your top five (or any number you want) OCs and what’s one cool or fun fact about them?

Hello! My day hasn't been too bad; I hope yours was decent also! Or that today is; I know some timezones are already a day head of me.

Hmm, top 5... I could do so many different top 5's, haha. Top 5 personal favorites, top 5 most popular/engaged with, top 5 OCs I feel are underrated... I think I'll share a fact about five OCs I find underrated! I'll gladly share the top 5 others if you'd prefer though, or are simply curious!

TOP 5 (TO ME) UNDERRATED OCS:

- Franny Mills: One of her two cats is actually originally a kitten that wondered it's way onto the Walker ranch. Since Abeline and Boham already had a barn cat, they were going to give it to a rescue to find a good home, when Franny offered to take it.

- Kevin McNair: Before he worked for LIFE Foundation, he had worked for Oscorp, and happened to be offered a job at LIFE Foundation when he was contemplating if he wanted a change in his life. Having always admired the Foundation, he eagerly accepted... not realizing until much later that Carlton Drake isn't exactly an ideal role model (but it did lead him to Eddie, Venom, and Jamie so he still considers it one of the best decisions he ever made).

- Beatrice Morgan: While Arthur would rather her have nothing to do with the outlaw life, she can shoot a gun and use a knife. She may be young and Arthur may want to protect her as much as possible, but in reality he knows that knowing how to protect herself would be most beneficial to Beatrice in the long run - especially because he doesn't trust any outlaws outside of the Van der Linde gang.

- Anya Safin: She ended up being paired with Zoya during Grisha practice because there WAS a part of the Darkling that felt bad for letting the king take such advantage of Genya, and since all the Tailor had really asked was to keep Anya away from the king and court life, he decided who better than the star pupil in the Little Palace to go over practicing Grisha with Anya? In hindsight this backfired immensely on him, because Zoya reluctantly developed kind of a soft spot for Anya, and because they trained together, when the two leave the Darkling, they end up being rather formidable - even if Anya isn't as powerful, she can use her Earth Etheralki to aid Zoya in a fight.

- Christi | WR400: Fred, Markus, and later Connor and Hank are the only males that she feels comfortable around because of her past at EDEN Club. And that is largely because of Kaitlyn and Lily - even if sometimes Lily's passion and general personality can be a bit much for Christi.

OCs DESERVE BETTER --> Kevin McNair (Venom) (ft. Jamie & Eddie Brock) FC: Cillian Murphy

Growing up in a moderately wealthy family with both an interest and talent for science at a young age, it surprised no one when Kevin McNair chose to pursue science as a career, earning a PhD in chemistry and a Masters in biology with a concentration in genetics. Working for a few different companies and doing his own research, he eventually landed a position at the LIFE Foundation in San Francisco. A position he loved and thought was the best thing to ever happen to him.

A few blocks down from his apartment was a coffee shop that he would often stop in before work or when doing some research or other assignment for the Foundation. There, he ended up befriending a barista named Jamie Brock after the two start a kinship after a mutual love of sciences, who ends up being the daughter of the Eddie Brock that used to host The Brock Report before losing everything after accusing Carlton Drake and LIFE Foundation being behind a few deaths. An accusation that had always puzzled Kevin, because from the reports, Eddie Brock seemed like a decent person. 

So when he learns from his friend Dr. Dora Skirth what exactly is going on with the aliens recovered from space, he volunteers to make sure word gets to Eddie Brock instead of her. When he encounters Jamie that night, he asks if she can get him in contact with her father. After some hesitation the girl agrees and Kevin is suddenly sneaking Eddie Brock into the LIFE Foundation and getting caught up in the aftermath, which includes befriending Brock and hiding out with Jamie to avoid the LIFE Foundation. Also, there is a symbiote attached to Brock and fuck, how did this become his life?

Jamie, Kaitlyn, Marissa, Charlotte and Beatrice, definitely! I can also see Christi falling into this category, especially when it comes to more 'revealing' fashion choices, largely because of her past at EDEN Club. In a way Emily could be considered in this category though she would rather have her clothes be 'comfortable AND practical' instead of just 'comfortable'. Growing up mostly with Eddie, Jamie kind of adapted his fashion sense. Kaitlyn does like to dress up every once in awhile but has always preferred comfort to fashion if she had to choose. Marissa has just always found a lot of the more fashionable clothing choices too uncomfortable looking - her fashion sense in general is a mix of Kaitlyn and Emily in terms of this question - prefers comfort with practicality but also might be fashionable once in a blue moon (slightly more so after her and Mischa become a thing). Charlotte DOES lean more towards the fashionable end but considering her job of escorting mutants to safety, some degree of comfort is necessary. Beatrice just finds a lot of the more fashionable clothing ladies - especially high society ladies - wear very uncomfortable looking.

MISCHA (he is Hannibal's son, after all), Karina, Anya, Jana, Lily and Fred. With Hannibal as a father, Mischa learned to appreciate a good suit. Despite not really getting along with anyone in her family but Nikolai, Karina did grow up around fashion and developed a liking for it when she's able to indulge now that she's in hiding. Being Genya's sister, Anya also developed an appreciation for fashion. Palpatine wasn't a father to her except in blood, but as she was named his heir since she was young, Jana grew up around fashion (I also imagine both Leia and Luke aren't all that surprised in hindsight that she's Palpatine's daughter because of how much knowledge she had about Core World fashion). Lily has a tendency for fashion because it's a form of art and she adores anything dealing with art (though she makes sure it's ethically made and sourced fashion). Fred ends up developing a liking for it after the Android Revolution and being dragged alongside Christi, Conner, Markus, and North in Lily and Kaitlyn's 'Operation: Full Human Experience'. Lily and him often team up to get Kaitlyn more into it while coaxing Christi towards her preferred comfort clothes that could be considered more fashionable.

Kevin and Franny. Kevin likes being comfortable but he also likes to be fashionable. Eddie and Jamie's styles make his eyes twitch. Venom could care less tbh. Franny likes to be comfortable when hanging out with the Walker's, Geri, Trey and Micki but has also developed the habit of also making sure she's fashionable ever since she learned how important looking is to be taken seriously both as an FBI agent and liaison to the Texas Rangers.

FC: Cillian Murphy Scientist Fic: TBA Love Interest: Eddie Brock x Venom Symbiote

Having always adored science, it was no surprise when Kevin pursued it as a career - nor when quickly made a name for himself. Thinking it would be a dream job, he accepts a position at LIFE Foundation - only to realize barely a year into his employment that the whole fiasco about Eddie Brock accusing the Foundation about unethical and illegal shit was actually true. Having befriended a barista at his favorite coffee shop that also happens to be Brock’s daughter, he gets her to arrange a meeting so he can sneak Brock into the facility and expose everything. Eddie becoming a host to an alien symbiote and Kevin and Jamie having to hide from the LIFE Foundation after they realize wasn’t part of the plan.

Octavia Octavius

FC: Lucy Hale Anti Heroine / Anti Villianess Madame Octopus Fic: Brutal Love Interests: Harry Osborn x Peter Parker

After being paralyzed from the waist down after being dropped from the clock tower by Harry, Octavia was adjusting to her new reality - and then her father suggests she try out a prosthetics similar to the ones he has. Believing the villainous acts were just a result of him overcoming and getting used to the AI in the arms, Octavia agrees - only to find out that the AI in hers still tries to take over. But it’s unable to, and absorbs more of her personality, becoming an anti-heroine/anti-villainess that call themselves ‘Madame Octopus’, determined to bring her father back, stop him and Peter from killing each other, but Harry keeps escaping Ravenscroft and insists on wanting to act like nothing has changed between him, Octavia, and Peter.
