20. End of Love - Florence + the Machine

First instinct was Eleanor and Chris' situation in the Village arc (tentively called 'All Things End' right now) even though they agree to try again after the events in Romania. After thinking more, it heavily applies to Octavia Octavius. The entire reason she became Madame Octopus was because Harry tried to kill her and she is a Harry x Peter poly ship so that definitely fucks up their dynamic. Though the lines 'We were a family pulled from a flood / You tore the floorboards up / And let the river rush in / Not wash away, wash away' could in a way apply to Ashley, Ellie and Joel, because for the longest time it was just Ashley and Ellie but then Joel comes along and fulfills the parental role for them, kind of saving what remains of their childhoods (especially in Ashley's case).

SO sorry this took me a minute omg. went through a moment where i thought i was really cringe (im over it now <3) but yeah i have a few!!! im going to pick my favorites and tell you their descriptions. some of these are from my own planning notes so apologies if they’re a little incomprehensible 💙🦋🌀🪁

Natanaël Auclair: he’s from the french revolution diorama and is named because I'm obsessed with the ae sound AND I love a good accent mark. He was an orator who wrote pamphlets in his real history life. He comes from an upper-middle-class area, so he’s pretty well educated. sort of obsessed with the classics both as a life model and a political model. almost Voltaire-esque because I want him to be sort of a philosophy guy too. In addition to the overall crisis of his situation, you could throw a weird relationship with religion in there too. make him more fucked up. He’s quite taken with the meditations of Marcus Aurelius as well as the works of Spinoza. He comes off as stuck up to almost everyone he meets, but this is just passion for what he does that comes off as condescending. Almost ADHD core in that regard. Gay? I think so. He’s like the Sartre of the French Revolution. (lie.) MAKES HIM A DETERMINIST THEN DIES OF HAVING TO THINK ABOUT DETERMINISM.

Octavia Antonina: This is Octavius’s daughter I can’t imagine she’s more than in her early 20s to late teens, her depiction probably comes from like a few years after Octavius’s, assuming the history is coming from the same texts. Tacitus’s the life of Agricola situation if you will. She probably died relatively young or not long after her figure is set. I’d give it another 5-10 years. Probably of consumption, Antonine plague, tuberculosis, etc, etc. from experience, I’d say she has every right to be pissed out of her mind. First, she’s willed to be conscious in this wacko land about 2000 years from when she was alive, THEN she has to reconcile with her absent father who is now THEE number one person in charge so there’s not anyone else you can go to. She's sort of normal at first (angry in her own right but whatever) but as she starts remembering specific events that happened while she was alive, I imagine she becomes more insane mental. By the end, she’s settled and gotten used to the whole thing, but it’s a journey, not a sprint, so she’s still dealing with everything. She’s grappling if you will.

Christine “Lottie'' Madden: a woman from the progressive era area who is like. super outspoken in her opinions, she’s probably not necessarily well-liked by the majority of people around her. she’s probably one of the first people Octavius meets from outside of his area, she’s gay, also. she’s stuck the neighborhood of stuck up rich people in this life at least for the time being. she’s not afraid to say exactly what she thinks and this gets her almost banned from all social events going onward, she’s not, on the condition of they’re going to be there forever and ever and it sort of adds drama. oh, the queer history of the woman’s suffrage movement is sooo interesting okay. MAYBE I set her up with the lady from the French revolution area. I think that would be fun. I also think she’s pissed off all the time and is constantly internally judging people.

Inès Descombs: She’s also from the French Revolution area! I named her because I'm obsessed with Inez from No Exit so I’m making her existentialism core because of this. Henceforth she does NOT agree with Natanaël on the subject of free will, she’ll go to her grave defending it. she’s not As educated as Natanaël, but she was still taught philosophy and literature by her father, since she also grew up relatively well off. maybe she writes a pamphlet or two under a pen name. I'd LOVE to set her with Lottie from the other area, like two revolutionary women, who aren’t taken as seriously as their male counterparts but are still fighting for what they believe in regardless. lesbianism omg. She’s a fiery spirit who has overcome being belittled by being openly intellectual and not attempting to mask her opinions. She doesn’t idolize classical society like Natanaël, but she is familiar with the history. I think she was part of the Women’s March on Versailles.

How I feel about this character: Definitely one of my favorite animated villains. He’s a lot more complex than I think most of the fandom gives him credit for. He’s tragic, with psychological issues, including fear of abandonment and identity. … plus I adore octopuses AND John Malkovich (sexy, talented man!!)

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Octavia (OC of TRikiD on ff.net), Chantel DuBois (I CAN EXPLAIN; This DOES include my human AU) and Dr. Blowhole (Bitter exes)

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Skipper and Dave (enemies to friends with newfound respect), Classified and the North Wind team (This is strictly in my Human AU; Dave was a member of the North Wind and went rogue. Before that he often worked with Classified’s team. Classified took the betrayal harder than he will ever admit.)

My unpopular opinion about this character: He deserves more love and props, people.

“You’re going to be okay,” Clarke whispered to (Y/n) as she sobbed into her neck.

“(Y/n),” Monty snapped in front of her face,“ Earth to (Y/n).”

“Huh?” (Y/n) smiled,“ Monty what’s up?” “(Y/n)…” Monty dropped his voice,“ Wells… He died.”

(Y/n) shook her head,“ No he’s not dead. You- You’re lying.” Tears spilled down her face.

Monty shook his head sadly, quickly hugging her. She clung onto him. ‘This feeling is familiar, it was too familiar,’ (Y/n) thought to herself, angrily wiping away tears.

“Madam (Y/n) may I have this dance?” The black haired male bowed in a mocking matter.

“Why of course you may, Sir Clay,” (Y/n) sloppily curtsied. She slipped while coughing.

“(Y/n),” Clay muttered, catching her,“ Here, your pills.” The older male frantically opened her draw and opened the small bottle containing small pills.

“Clay, how do you get so many pills for me,” (Y/n) touched his cheek,“ Are you stealing them?” He looked away from her.

“Clay,” (Y/n) frowned,“ You are… Such an idiot.” He shook his head,“ I couldn’t just let you die.”

“I’m dying aren’t I?” (Y/n) looked at the ground, sadly laughing to herself,“ I always knew this day was going to come, never thought it was this soon.”

“You’re not going to die,” Clarke muttered,“ I won’t let you, (Y/n).”

(Y/n) smiled saying,“ Clarke, I’ve known I was sick for the longest time. My lover, Clay, was floated for stealing medicine for me.” (Y/n) wiped away a few tears,“ Just be safe without me, don’t overwork yourself.”

“Clay,” (Y/n) cried out, being held back by a guard. “At least let me say goodbye,” Clay pleaded with the guards. They looked at each other and let him go. “

You idiot,” she sobbed, her fists hitting his chest. He stood there silently wrapping his arms around her.

“You’re going to die,” (Y/n) cried out,“ You are the stupidest and most selfish person I know.” She went on her tip toes and kissed him,“ I don’t want to live without you…”

“You’re strong I know you can,” Clay laughed,“ It’s okay just remember to take your pills.”

“The pills are what got you in trouble,” (Y/n) muttered,“ Please don’t be floated. I wish we didn’t live on the Arc.” “Well, where else would we live?” His night blue eyes shined brightly.

“Earth of course,” (Y/n) whispered,“ There we could run away.”

“Octavia we’re losing (Y/n),” Clarke shouted. Octavia ran in, many pills in her hands,“ They have to be one of these right?”

“My time has come,” (Y/n) whispered, a single tear falling from her face. “(Y/n) hold on we can save you,” Monty whispered to his friend.

“My lover,” (Y/n) whispered, playing with the ring on her finger,“ I will soon join him.”

“What,” Clarke looked at the girl strangely,“ Who is her lover?”

“His name,” Monty paused looking at his best friend,“ His name was Clay.”

“I love you,” Clay hugged (Y/n) for the last time. He dug through his pocket, taking out a small gold and emerald ring.

“Promise me,” he put the ring on her left ring finger,“ In our next lives, let’s get married, and live peacefully on Earth.”

“I promise,” (Y/n) whispered, hugging back.

“Times up,” the guard handcuffed Clay,“ You said your goodbyes. He’s going to be floated now.”

“CLAY.”

“Clay,” (Y/n) smiled,“ Goodbye.” She closed her eyes for the last time. ~~~ “(Y/n)?”

The (h/c) haired girl opened her eyes, looking around were she was. A field of flowers surrounded her.

She raised herself off the ground and made eye contact with the familiar blue eyes.

“Clay,” (Y/n) whispered, running towards the man,“ I made it to Earth.” “Really?” He laughed,“ How was it?”

“It was amazing,” (Y/n) smiled,“ I ran out of pills. I died. Where are we?”

“I don’t exactly know,” Clay scratched his head and (Y/n) glared at him. “You’re the most useless person I know,” She glared,“ First you steal pills, then you die, and when you die you don’t-” He cut her off by placing his lips against hers.

“Hey at least we’re together.”

OCs DESERVE BETTER --> Odette ‘Dette’ Octavius (Marvel/Spider-Man) FC: Emmy Rossum (Raimi!verse), Lucy Hale (Webb!verse), Sofia Black D���Elia (MCU)

Introduced as the daughter of Doctor Otto Octavius as an attempt to add more depth to the character, Odette ‘Dette’ Octavius was written as a friend of Peter Parker and Harry Osborn from their college days who helps Aunt May with F.E.A.S.T and is seen as the anti-thesis of her father - smart but not as smart, no real interest in science, spends her time helping with F.E.A.S.T and the community. In the years since her introduction, her character has also fleshed out more, being consistently written as believing in the good that lies inside her dad. She also has on different occasions had a relationship with both Peter Parker and Harry Osborn in different comic runs but never for too long. 

First appearing on screen during Spider-Man (2002) by up-and-coming actress Emmy Rossum before her Shameless days, she was written in the films as the childhood best friend of Peter, Harry, and MJ, with her and Harry having a friendly bickering over their fathers. During the trilogy, she was written as Harry’s love interest and it remains unknown what happened to her after Spider-Man 3 (2007). During Spider-Man 2 (2004), her and Otto’s relationship was finally represented on the big screen, a depiction largely considered to be very comic accurate, though another criticism Spider-Man 3 (2007) drew was how it seemed to brush off Otto’s death and the affect it no doubt had on Odette. Some fans in recent years have felt like there was potential for a poly ship in the trilogy, with the chemistry and writing between the characters almost hinting towards more than platonic feelings. That, of course, remains a very unpopular and highly contested opinion.

Reappearing again in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), this time portrayed by Lucy Hale of Pretty Little Liars fame, many fans were taken by surprise when not only was she written as Octavia Octavius and Peter’s childhood best friend but also as a potential love interest if the series moved forwards. In The Amazing Spider-Man (2014) she ended up rekindling a childhood romance with Harry Osborn, only for a seemingly last minute script change where suddenly Gwen Stacey was written as leaving to study aboard, her and Harry broke up, and her and Peter were acting like future love interests. This decision didn’t sit well with most fans, contributing to the film’s infamous hatred among Spider-Man fans. At the end of the film, rather than Harry killing Gwen Stacy after Peter fails to save her, Octavia is the one that falls from the clock tower. Instead of being killed, she is permanently paralyzed from the waist down, something that is attributed to comic book science as the way she was falling, even with Peter webbing her in time, she should have had a broken neck.

Played by newcomer Sofia Black D’Elia in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), once again named Odette Octavius, she is once again not only Peter’s childhood friend but also MJ’s. While fans were debating if Zenday’s MJ was going to be MCU!MJ, many were also torn between whether to ship Peter x MJ, Peter x Odette, or MJ x Odette. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) once again shocked fans when Marvel Studios decided to go ahead with a poly ship between Peter x MJ x Odette, something that did not do much to endear die-hard comic fans to the MCU’s take on the web-slinger and related characters. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) saw the brief return of the father-daughter relatioship between Odette and Otto, even if they were from separate universes. Between his relationship with Odette and the other Peter’s, the trope referred to as ‘Dad Ock’ has rapidly taken over the fanfiction pages for the MCU. After the spell at the end of the film, it is revealed that MJ and Odette are still together, though Odette got accepted and will be attending Lesley University rather than M.I.T with Ned and MJ.

Facing an alternate evil version of her dad should probably make Odette more nervous than she currently was, but that honestly took a backseat to her trying to figure out how to voice the question she had been dying to ask her father but too afraid to. The Otto Octavius before her may not be her dad, exactly, but he was apparently a father to an alternate version of her, and from his comments and reactions, the two were quite similar.

“I see some things are universal.” 

Odette looked up, slightly confused, and the man nodded towards her hands - which she realized she had been twisting and fidgeting with as she turned the question over. And that, somehow, is what gave her the courage to just blurt it out.

“Your Odette...” She began, stumbling over the next bit. Not that he minded, if the almost patient look on his face was an indication. “... Are you proud of her? Do you... ever wish she was more like you?”

The last sentence came out more of a rush than she intended, and probably louder too, if the electricity man’s sudden attention and the familiar warmth of MJ’s hand slipping into hers was any indication. 

She didn’t have to turn around to know that her girlfriend was probably glaring at the alternate version of her dad, no doubt daring him to confirm her insecurities, but the man either didn’t notice or paid it no mind.

His face softened, showing echoes of her own dad, briefly taking her off guard.

“My dear girl, I highly doubt there’s any universe where I am not proud of who you are. I am fairly confident in saying that you are my greatest creation across universes - this universe version of me will agree, I can almost guarantee it.”

One of the metal tentacles brushed up against the magic barrier, almost like it was trying to reach out to touch her - reassure her, almost. A gentle squeeze of her hand from MJ made her realize she was actually crying.

BRUTAL -> Octavia Octavius x Harry Osborn

“You took away my chance at happiness, now I’m going to take away yours!”

The bad feeling Octavia had been having increased tremendously and something in her hindbrain was activated, telling her to run, run. So she did, only to feel a hand grasp the back of her shirt and yank her up into the air. 

“Sorry sweetheart. It’s nothing personal,” a familiar voice crooned. 

She could hear Peter screaming below but all she could do was stare at the transformed face of one of her oldest friends, the boy she had been in love with until everything fell apart.

The boy who was no doubt going to kill her to get back at Peter.  

Before she could try and plead with whatever bit of Harry remained in the goblin-like creature before her, he let go and she was free-falling.

Octavia Octavius | Madame Octopus

The same AI that took over her father had an ‘offspring’ that started to take over Octavia when she tried her own version of the prototype. Unlike her father, the AI wasn’t as strong so her real personality as sort of... melded with the AI, turning her more anti-heroine than full-fledged villainess

The four ‘arms’ all have names, plays off of Otto’s arms: Leo, Theo, Sally, Holly

Telescoping (arms can extend past their initial 6 foot length)
