Is it time for a 'radical' change? Maybe not.

David Lewis Brooks

PREFACE:  This article was written over several weeks from August 18 until September 20, 2023, after I returned from my second overseas trip that summer.
When one comes to end of his/her professional career, it is not always easy to decide what to do or where or how to find an avocation or a new vocation to keep oneself occupied productively in the last Third of One's (Current) Lifespan.  Over the approximately three and a half years since I officially retired from work (university teaching and research job), I have dabbled a bit in several possible Third Life career moves, but none of them has panned out into any satisfying work or job offers.
Basically, I am staying at home and being the wise, but quiet, granddad to the Brooks-Yamaguchi family. Our older son, also an Associate Professor, but at Asia University (not too far from our home) lives with his Japanese wife and two daughters, aged 7 and 5 years old).  His wife, Yuki, works as a student affairs officer (foreign student admissions) at KUFS (Kanda University of Foreign Studies), located a short bicycle ride from our homes. I say 'homes' since we live just a block away from our son's and his family's residence.
I had first joined the teaching staff at Kitasato’s Sagamihara campus in April, 1996, as an emergency teacher recruited by Prof. Yukio Seya in March of that year to fill a sudden part-time English teacher vacancy.
Tumblr media
Photo taken August 2023 at the circular roundabout road, about 400 meters from the East Side entrance to Tama Bochi Cemetery, Fuchu, Tokyo. These are crepe myrtle trees in full bloom from July to October annually. It's a bit rare to have two large crepe myrtle growing side-by-side in the cemetery, so they are a favorite sight on our daily dog walks into the Tama Bochi (cemetery).
I was subsequently employed as a full-time teacher member of the English Language Unit a month into  the school following year, and has continued in the position of Associate Professor until my mandatory retirement in March 2019. Why a month later start? Actually, I was a part-time teacher with 6 weekly classes, which was the same as a full-time teacher's workload. By then asking that I be made a full-timer (once I was already employed), then they didn't have to open the 'new' position up to public applications from both presently employed part-timers as well as outsider. It was a strategic political employment move. I continue for three years as a contract (full-time) employee, before being made full-fledged faculty member (Assistant Professor), and eventually attained Associate Professorship in approximately 10 years further.  I never considered even asking to be a Full Professor because I considered that my Japanese language skills were not sufficient to complete all of the duties required a full professor.  However, I will never actually know if I was considered qualified to seek that promotion or not, because my own Department Head retired and I had several other colleagues that I would have had to compete with to become Professor Brooks.  More money, but more work and many ore headaches (if you ask me). Therefore, I happily remained an Associate Professor until I retired in March 2019.  Retirement became mandatory at the age of 65 year-of-age for all, but esteemed Professor Emeritus, of which there were one appointed every couple of years.
After my official retirement, I was asked to teach one further year as an Adjunct Professor under a part-time teacher's salary for five courses on three days a week (Mondays - one class, Tuesday - 2 classes and Thursday - 2 classes). This arrangement, by the way, was how I started teaching part-time at Kitasato University first in the 1996-97 academic year.
Tumblr media

After his retirement,  David L. Brooks had intended to remain as an adjunct professor at Kitasato University for one or two days a week,  he'd likely be teaching part-time as well at Aoyama Gakuin University for two graduate or undergraduate courses, and may also be working on a volunteer basis in the part-time position at the University’s Office of International Affairs from April, 2019, until the 2024.  In addition, Mr. Brooks would be managing director of a new travel company based in Hawaii that specializes in edutrekking, travel expeditions for small teams that combine travel with eco-tourism and humanitarian endeavors for potential customers in Japan, the USA, and Europe.
The LAST PLANS in the above paragraph DID NOT actually  MATERIALIZE, and when COVID-19 hit the world, my Third Life Career is was then put on hold and is, therefore, being reconsidered. That is purpose of this entry: To review those three years of dormancy (rather like hibernation) would probably be a helpful move at this juncture of my existence.   I can either decide what I want/need to do next, or will come to some other kind of resolution.

Part I
January 2020 - June 2021
Tumblr media
Photo taken February 2022 at the Diamond Head Road leading into Kapiolani Park, Honolulu, Hawaii
A)      From January 2020 until June 2021, I was involved in the Harvard Kennedy School of Government's Public Leadership Credential, where I completed six different six-week long graduate courses in an online coursework format that included weekly group work (for one of weeks of each course I was the group leader and completing a personally focused individualized weekly assignment, plus completing a challenging final written exam.  Along the way, I had three very distinguished, challenging, and interesting professors and got to work in detail with dozens of highly qualified and tenacious graduate students, who were also pursuing the same Harvard graduate credential.
Tumblr media
Seated at the Jackie O's restaurant / bar at Super Paradise Beach on the Greek island of Mykonos. It was a warm afternoon in June, 2023, and I was one of just a few customers at 4:00pm that day.
To be honest, taking the coursework (actually 2/5ths of a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government) was the fulfillment of a personal challenge that I had envisioned pursuing more than a decade ago. At that time, after designating Harvard KSG as my first choice for a graduate institution at the time of taking the GRE, I received a letter of invitation from Harvard Kennedy School asking me to complete the necessary steps to apply for admission. Probably the main reason was because I had scored a perfect 6 on the then newly instigated GRE Writing Test, which had only just begun the very year that I had re-taken the GRE. There is no doubt that I found the six courses in the Public Leadership Credential at Harvard KSG to be academically challenging, but they were not impossible and I found the course content, the professors, and working with my fellow course-mates to be highly interesting, personally rewarding and a great learning experience (almost without exception). However, I believe that I came to realize that simply cooperating and competing with my other Harvard online classmates was not the activity that really excited my intellectual interests or challenged my internal soul-searching to find a meaningful post-retirement career.
Tumblr media

Most of my own personally-meaningful assignments for those six courses were related to my current passion at the time: Finding or creating an organization (or group) that can assist impoverished families in Hawaii, particularly those living under stark economic realities of today's world (who can absolutely be categorized a 'poor' families and individuals who are economically disadvantaged, to find affordable housing (either by buying, renting, or sharing a portion of a group-owned lodging).
Tumblr media
Eating at a nice (and expensive) restaurant near the Beach Boardwalk at Sitges, Spain in June, 2023
Actually, that leads me to my July 2021 - January 2023 phase, which involved trying to set up both a non-profit, called Philantropical.org, and a for-profit travel-related business, called Rainbow Travel Network, Inc., both of which I have now closed.
Let me explain more in the next section.
Part II
July 2021 - January 2023
B)  My Entrepreneurial Phase -- Starting Two Business that I closed even before they could actually start.
Part II-A   From January 2021 through January 2023, I was busy trying to set up both a non-profit, called Philantropical.org, and also a for-profit travel-related business, called Rainbow Travel Network, Inc., both of which I subsequently have now closed.
Tumblr media
Photo taken June 2023 at the Old Windmills Strand located near the main port / harbor of Choros Town on Mykonos Island, Greece
Setting up Philantropical.org (a non-profit organization) was not too difficult. In fact, inside the State of Hawaii, it was painless and virtually easy-peasy-Japanesy (as we often say in the Brooks household). Even when I decided to make the non-profit be recognized nationwide (in the US), it was not very difficult to secure the paperwork and to get registered and verified as a US nationwide non-profit organization by the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The difficulty arose when it came to the actual details of the non-profit tax designation and assigned levels of tax compliance as a non-profit organization.  While it was still recognized as a non-profit, for tax purposes, it was designated as a XXXXXX non-taxed organization and the paperwork and tax forms required were just too laborious and time-consuming to be acceptable (at least for me alone).
I quickly realized that I could not sustain that level of complicated book-keeping and convoluted tax reporting that such a designation required. I subsequently decided to dissolve the non-profit organization, thus appearing to 'officially' abandon its mission:  helping disadvantaged and underprivileged families to cope with the regulations and restrictions needed in order to live in a house on the Big Island of Hawaii.
To be continued.....
Part II-B Rainbow Travel Network, Inc.
Tumblr media
Photo taken March 2012 at the Marine Park located near Arinaga Marine Preserve on the island of Gran Canaria, The Canary Islands, Spain (taken by my own underwater photography with my own camera).
The second part of my plan was to establish a travel services company that acted as an 'arranger' for travel services to be provided to small (3-7) or  medium-sized (8-24) people.  The 'trips' are not actually solely for the purpose of travel, but have the ultimate goal of providing 'free' assistance to people, organizations (such as non-profits and public corporations), to help animal and plant life in a specific region, and (or) to improve the environmental conditions in a specific locale in order to reach their fullest (and highest) potentials. The eco-trips or 'edutreking' sojourns would be in my current home country (Japan) or abroad; they could be free (if a sponsor will pay expenses) or their costs could be reduced by donations and payments from  the beneficiary groups, or they could be totally self-supported (paid for my the volunteers own monetary contributions).
                Examples of such 'trips' could include any or a combination of the following eco-trips  or 'edutreking' experiences:a) Volunteer to teach life-skill English conversation to home healthcare workers who are assisting disaster relief for an Australian state;  b)Lead a workshop on polish one's job search and employer attractiveness skills for low-level, poorly educated individuals seeking jobs as migrant workers in a South American country;
c) Conduct an environmental clean-up workday in specific area needing human labor of volunteers (in Florida after the last major hurricane damage),
and
d - z) there are countless more examples, etc... But hopefully, you get the idea:  human volunteers helping our planet and its environment, its peoples and the animal & plant livelihoods.

Part III February 2023 - September 2023 C)   My own travels overseas
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photos were taken August 2023 at the Hellabrunn Zoo outside Munich, Germany. Of course, there are hundreds of species of birds, fish, reptiles, and other animals at the zoo, but the birds and fish are easiest to photograph because you're allowed to be so close to them in an enclosed cage  (bird cage in huge) or space (the aquarium).
From January 2023 until the present (Sept 2023), I was mostly at my home in Tokyo, helping with the chores of grand-child minding, cooking and cleaning house.  I did find the time and resources (money) to travel abroad twice during that time. Both times,  I visited Europe; actually, I visited Spain and Germany twice as my favorite European cities are Munich and Barcelona.
Tumblr media
Many years ago, I practiced the art (martial) of Aikido. Once we held a public exhibition of our 'sensei's' students at a public hall in Gotanda, Tokyo. Here I am finishing a defensive move on my co-combattant.
So it is time for a radical change in my lifestyle or vocation (or avocation)? Well, after considering what's happening now in my world and in our societies, I'd have to say that things in my life will likely just remain as they are, without any huge changes. I'm enjoying what I'm doing now: being a partner to my wife, and a father and grandfather to my sons and spouses and offspring. Attempting to conflate my raison d'etre into some grand scheme of a new life is probably only my own wishful thinking as my mortality lies more concretely ahead of me. I'll most likely be happy to simply live my life as it is being played out now. I'm loved by family, and enjoy the hobbies and pastimes that 'apparently' keep me busy and productive as I enter my seventh decade of life. I can only hope that I will have at least two more decades to enjoy my life on Earth and hope to gain the satisfaction of having spent my remaining time alive in the best ways possible.
Thank for reading.

What Office Markets Can Take Away from Austins Boom
What Office Markets Can Take Away from Austin’s Boom https://ift.tt/jwrGDPa Even as pandemic fears finally begin to wind down, return-to-office movements in North America are varying wildly depending on the market. Ottawa, for one, is looking pretty sluggish. San Francisco, once the hottest office market in the U.S. until 2019, now has an office vacancy rate of 25 percent. Meanwhile, Austin’s office market continues to soar, leading the United States in office job growth as of the second quarter of this year. From Meta (formerly Facebook) to Apple to Tesla to Amazon, it seems we keep hearing about companies nabbing space in Austin almost every day.  Austin’s real estate market in general has long been hot for a variety of reasons, but as companies everywhere try to fill their offices to pre-pandemic levels, there’s merit for commercial real estate developers to understand what it is about Austin that makes its office market tick. Space study Unfortunately, one of the biggest takeaways from Austin’s office boom isn’t exactly a lesson that every city can learn how to implement: to spread out. Unlike urban settings like New York City or San Francisco, Austin isn’t land-locked and has ample room to grow. And with room to grow, there’s room to build. Austin was already anticipated to experience the largest office market expansion in the U.S. this year, and according to global commercial real estate company Avison Young’s Q2 2022 Austin Office Market Report, 8.5 million square feet of office space is now being developed, and urban submarket release rates have reached 41 percent. Hey y’all ! Just a recap on my 2020.
So, for the past few years I’ve been busy with my job and other shenanigans. I finally decided to begin my journey in working abroad, I’m looking at you IRELAND. Why Ireland? I have two aunts who work in Hospitals abroad (Ireland and America), they always share stories about their job and life abroad, I find Ireland more enticing because I think the weather and the mood in Ireland would suit me better than the US, I am a person who enjoys cool cold weather after all. Anyways, I sat and took the IELTS exam twice on 2019 but sadly I did not reach a passing mark in my writing test in both of them. Luckily, a close friend of mine invited me to take the OET exam, albeit it was rather expensive I gave it a go and thankfully passed the exam. Passing the exam was my ticket to apply in Ireland as a Non-EU applicant.
The NMBI process was easy once you have all the available documents at hand, the waiting part is tough but it’s over within 6 months or less. The part where I had a hard time was procuring my PRC documents, I had to go to Davao City since it needs to be sent by a Regional office. So, amidst the pandemic and the threat to visiting a covid-19 hotspot, I really needed those documents so I had to force my mom to let me go even if I travel alone. It was the first time I drove to Davao by myself, and what do you know my tire exploded, I wasn’t hurt (THANK GOD!) and I had a spare tire, a bystander helped me find a car mechanic to change the tire. It was a 4 hour ride, time was ticking, by the way I cried when I got back on the road thinking ‘I could have died back there.’ So I arrived at PRC and I find out that they were about to stop accepting applicants because they’re only open in the Morning and I got there at 10:30am. Close call but I got in. I started processing and then I was informed that there were no stamps left, the stamps are needed for processing documents. My heart sank, I asked them where I might be able to buy the stamps, but they said even the ones selling outside has none left, and they don’t know when the stamps will be available. My heart sank even deeper, I came there with only one goal and I almost got into an accident and I won’t even get what I came for. The NMBI deadline was nearing its end and the PRC documents is the only requirement left. If I don’t get this now, I will have to reschedule my appointment and the next available date is past my NMBI deadline. I was teary eyed, thinking of just leaving and accepting my destiny, I went to the gate and talked to the guard eating his lunch. He told me to go back inside and wait for him, so I did. After a few minutes he approached me together with an applicant, the guy gave me 2 stamps, he said he brought four earlier, so he gave it to me. I paid him, and I paid the guard. I felt so blessed, I was being helped by strangers whenever I encountered problems. I finished processing and went home directly.
After a month of waiting, I received my Decision Letter from NMBI (October 25), that day I began sending my CVs to various Hospitals and Agencies who are advertising for Theatre Nurse vacancies. November 09, I was chilling at home drawing on my pen tablet when my phone suddenly rang, my eyes widened and my heart beat fast after reading [IRELAND] on my phone screen, I picked up my phone and frantically paced around the house, it was from an agency called CCM recruitment. The call went like this:
agent: Hello? Is this [my name] ?
Nina: Yes, yes maam, speaking.
agent: Okay. I am from CCM Recruitment, are you available for a pre-screening interview right now?
Nina: (right now? I’m not prepared...I need to prepare!) uhm, I’m actually at work today maam (LIES!)
agent: oh, is that so, sorry for calling at this hour.
Nina: No, no, i’ts fine maam. I’m off duty tomorrow.
agent: Okay, can we have the interview tomorrow?
Nina: Sure maam, at what time would that be?
agent: same time. okay? talk to you tomorrow nina.
Nina: thank you very much for calling maam.
And that’s how I escaped because I got scared of not knowing what questions she’ll throw me. I researched some examples on pre-screening interviews and asked a group of nurses with the same experience on what I should be expecting. The day finally came, her first words were ‘sorry ha, natagalan.’ so I thought, ohhh a filipina? My agent was a filipina, I felt a bit relieved knowing that. She just clarified things about my experiences and background, most of her questions were about what I have written on my CV. When I heard the words ‘Okay nina, I’ll help you land a job here in Ireland.’ I was screaming internally! I reviewed my CV after the interview and found a mistake on the year when I started in the OR, I was scared I thought that I would loose my credibility as an applicant and that they would be disappointed and reject my application. I emailed Maam Beth (agent) about the mistake and she replied ‘noted.’ I got my confidence back, I felt blessed to have a kind and understanding agent like her.
December 2, I received a call from Maam Beth, she was bearing good news:
Beth: Hello nina, sorry medyo natagalan tayo, ilang weeks din tayo na tengga.
Nina: Hello maam beth, no worries po maam.
Beth: soo, my good news ako, may interested na employer sayo no, 2 hospitals and scheduled for interview next week. (SHOOKT) yung CHI and yung isa naman Blackrock, bale may webinar so mag attend ka ha.
Nina: wow, thank you po maam beth.
We discussed about the schedule of the interview and what to do to prepare for an interview. I attended the webinar but it focused only on CHI, I found out later that I was not short-listed for CHI so I focused on Blackrock Clinic Hospital. December 9, the interview schedule was later at 11pm which is 3pm in Ireland, I was told that the interviewer will be the Matron of BRC (Carmel). I was super nervous, I just left the window open, she was late for 30 minutes, I got scared coz I thought she skipped my file or something. When I saw her on the screen I said “oh Hi maam, I saw you on youtube.” A bit unprofessional but she chuckled and I gained a  bit of confidence. The interview lasted for 15-18 minutes, she asked about my experiences in OR and some situational questions inside the theatre, she asked if I would be able to handle their hospital since my current hospital is not as busy and stuff like that, she asked if I’ll be able to pass the RCSI exam, and many more. The interview ended, I did not really know if I did well or if my answers were enough to pass but I lighted a  candle in the Church and prayed to pass. December 10, I received a call from maam beth, at first she asked if we discussed the salary and I said no she didn’t tell me. I thought, the salary wsnt discussed by her because maybe I didn’t pass the interview...I felt sad, but then maam beth broke the silence with a “congratulations”. I was overjoyed, I PASSED!? I PASSED!! She told me about the salary and the RCSI exam and about the next steps. The next day I signed the contract.
I’m still currently processing the papers that were sent by Ate beth (she wants me to call her that and not maam) and some requirements that I need to secure like GP check-up and vaccination status, I’m still employed in the Philippines right now, the next RCSI exam is  on March 2021, I’m not sure if i’ll be able to sit that one with the current pandemic but I’m hoping for the best! I AM FAVORED AND BLESSED IN SO MANY WAYS! I guess my next post will be when I arrive in Ireland.

Welcome to Thriving Mind, a resource to help you understand your individual signs of stress, take small steps to recharge, and unlock better mental health.
Eight years ago, Chris Wood—writer, director (“The Stew”), actor (Supergirl, The Vampire Diaries)—lost his father to mental illness. His death was, in part, the result of a manic episode — the symptoms of which, according to Wood, came out of the blue. “His personality changed. It started with racing thoughts, and his speech would be chattered,” Wood tells Thrive. “His opinions were changing, and stuff just didn’t seem like him.” His father refused to discuss the signs of his declining mental health, Wood explains, which prevented him from getting the help he needed.
Galvanized by this tragedy, Wood launched IDONTMIND, a mental health awareness campaign and lifestyle brand working to defeat the stigma around mental illness. To achieve its mission, IDONTMIND features resources across its website on everything from how to deal with serious mental health conditions to strategies for managing day-to-day stress.
And new research shows that in general, we’re pretty bad at that. A new Thrive Global survey of over 2,000 Americans ages 18 to 85 shows just how desperately people want and need that knowledge: 91% of respondents said not knowing or ignoring their personal signs of overstress had a negative impact on their mental well-being, 72% wish they knew more small everyday steps to improve their mental health, and nearly half said when it comes to managing their stress, they don’t know where to start.
Because there is power in sharing our stories, Wood is opening up to Thrive about his mental health journey, everyday steps he takes to take care of his emotional well-being, and the launch of his organization, IDONTMIND.
Thrive Global: Can you share a little about the backstory of IDONTMIND?
Chris Wood: About eight and a half years ago, I began this impossibly tough year that left me juggling grief and depression. My coping mechanism at the time was to shut it down and not talk about it. When people would ask how I was, I just ended the conversation. I wasn’t open to discussing it at all. For a couple of years that was how I operated. It was terrible. I didn’t really start to heal until the first time I actually decided to be honest about what I was feeling and what I’d been through.
Instead of shutting people down when they asked how I was, I heard myself starting to respond with, “Oh, I don’t mind, I can talk about it.” Just that tiny little switch in my response from being closed off and denying conversations — just starting with something that was open, and that said, “No, I’m not going to let this weigh me down anymore. I’m going to speak about it” — changed everything. I hadn’t been admitting there was a problem. I hadn’t been embracing the truth of my grief in losing my dad.
The irony was that what happened with my dad — this manic episode that was caused by stress and work overload and lack of self-care — was exactly what I was doing to myself in the process of losing him. Fast forward, I was starting to work with mental health organizations, and just wanting to give back and find a way to be a voice in that space. I noticed that every approach I was seeing was catering to insiders, the people who already know mental health is a problem. I realized that the people who we need to be reaching are the ones who aren’t already thinking and talking about [mental health]. That was kind of the direct segue into building my own organization: this awareness that there was a vacancy, and nothing I saw was filling its need.
TG: How do you see grief as related to mental health?
CW: It’s something I think a lot about. It’s funny, my instance with grief was also related to mental health. But grief itself obviously is emotional and mental. The recovery of loss, no matter what the cause is, is a process that is complicated and inconsistent. There’s no formula for doing it right. Yesterday [the eight-year anniversary of Wood’s father passing] came and went. For the first time when the anniversary arrived, I didn’t feel like I was a puddle on the floor. There was almost like a, “Wow, that’s kind of sad that life just chugs on without that person in your life.” That’s the way grief goes — it cycles in and out.
TG: What are some of the things that cause you stress?
My main stressors are actually things that are probably not unusual to anyone who works in the entertainment industry. The inconsistency of employment, the next opportunity. I work in a trade where you’re constantly out of work until you’re in the next job. The perpetualness of a current project ending, and the uncertainty of whether or not there is going to be a next one. I have this deep strange desire to create things that are lasting, and to seek out things that are meaningful. Sometimes that’s a factor of stress — I need to be doing more. I need to be doing better. I need to be working harder.
TG: What are the signs that you’re starting to reach your breaking point?
CW: I have a really bad time with self-esteem in those moments. I’m really, really hard on myself. I’m much meaner to me than I am to anyone else in my life, which my wife always likes to remind me. “Be as nice to you as you are to me, and you’ll be doing better,” she says. Depression is my thing that I battle. When it kicks in, existence is hard. Wanting to get out of bed is hard, being a human is hard. That’s how it shows for me. It’s just severe feelings of worthlessness. It gets very sad, because I start to feel like my only impact on the world is negative. I know that’s not reality when I’m feeling well. But when I’m stressed and when I’m triggered, and I start to spiral, that’s where I go to.
TG: How do you learn to take care of your mental health every day?
CW: The biggest lesson I’ve learned was that I can’t hold things inside. That was what was keeping my grief from morphing to the next evolution. It was just staying in this dark first stage of hurt and anger. How does a wound heal until you start to treat it? I think the biggest thing really was the openness. By talking about things, I was able to find other solutions that also helped. For me, exercise is a huge component of my mental health. When I can’t exercise, that’s when I spiral. It’s such a release for me. I think people need to be more active. If you’re not dealing with something, stay active. If you’re dealing with something, get out and go for a walk. Another thing I do when I start to feel down is I meditate. I try to do six 10-minute sessions in a day. I try to eat really clean. I walk my dog like five or six times a day. The biggest thing I learned is to take the time to take care of yourself. Invest in yourself, because you only get one. That’s where your efforts should go. That will help you accomplish all the other things in your life.
TG: What are your hopes for the movement you’re creating with IDONTMIND?
CW: I have a super simple goal of changing the world. Honestly though, that is the target. Truly, the goal is to live in a world where the stigma is dissolved. People are able to communicate about mental illness in the way that they communicate about physical ailments. Being able to say things like, “I’m just having a day,” and it being understood. Mental health days at work being a real thing, which is actually coming more into swing now in the U.S. There are reasons that other cultures embrace the concept of siestas, or two-month vacation periods. We’re a little bit backwards in our society. We work, work, work and don’t rest. Then people burn out. It’s an impossible study to really trace in early years, but looking at the question: How are these diseases that are so prevalent in our world, how are they a potential result of living with nonstop stress? What happens when we view our emotions as importantly as some people view going to the gym? The goal is to reprogram our thinking as a society.
IDONTMIND is an official program of Mental Health America, the nation’s leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to promoting the overall mental health of all Americans. With over 200 affiliates and associates in 42 states, 6,500 affiliate staff and over 10,000 volunteers, MHA brings over 100 years of experience and knowledge to IDONTMIND.

2019 - Recap
In this year, there were 2 major moment that changed my daily routine. Marriage and working in a new place.
But, marriage changed my life, change the way i think and look at something. To me, marriage makes everything easier, because the 'burden' we usually carry on our shoulders alone, share with two people, love birds. You learn how to love someone properly, you grow older with them. You learn to build a team together, learn to understand each other and everything.
Seconds after Eric did the ijab qobul, my love for him felt like it was bursting. I felt like i never fell in love with someone. It is magical and miracle. I just married him for 3 months and feel like i've been knowing him for years. Maybe because i like him for a very long time haha. I am so proud of myself because i can marry someone that i prayed for. I love Eric and i want the whole world and milky way know how much i want him.
Eric is the best guy. He respects me that much, loves me that much, thinks of me that much, cares about me and listens to every words i don't even need to say. We say 'i love you' every day, every minute, every time we feel like we should. Because i know when i say i love you to him, Allah blesses me, fills my life with goodness and positivity.
He kisses me in the forehead everyday, everytime, before we go to bed, before we wake up, before we go to work. Eric doesn't say something sweet, doesn't make me surprises and gives me a lot of presents but he gives me everything i need, love. With love, you're going to be a better person with better personalities. With love, difficult becomes easy, angry becomes happy.
I love Eric and i will always do forever and Allah knows.
So, move on to my career. Right before i got married, i decided to quit from my previous working place. It was a hard decision and difficult to say goodbyes to everyone in that room. I cried a lot and missed them so much. Completely safe zone for over 4 years. I went back to my hometown and helped my parents with marriage stuff and relaxed myself, off from busy town - Jakarta.
I got 3 months off from July to October without working. And started from early September, i prepared myself to applied on many job vacancies. I should go to work, i want to help Eric with the financial issues. We want to make a lot of money together, fight together. I came to different places, office to office and went through another day with another job interviews.
Exhausted, stressful and almost gave up. But i prayed to Allah everyday. I asked him to give me a best job for my career and my family and my life. Then, Allah didn't need a long time to made my dream come true. Just several weeks, my prayers were answered. Sometimes i don't think i really fit with this job but this job gives me a new challenge.
Working with foreign people, Japanese.
I don't know if it's an upgrade but it is challenging, of course.
People always say 'rejeki orang menikah'. It is true. Damn true. Like i said before, to me, marriage makes my life easier. Maybe this ain't my dream job, but i try to like working here. New people, new challenge, new atmosphere, new work day routine. I am happy i can help Eric with financial stuff. I love to make a lot of money. So i try love my new job, too.
Those were my 2019 recap. A lot of new thing this year. And i am so ready for 2020. Fighting together with Eric.

Psychiatrist vacancies 'threaten' NHS transformation
Psychiatrist at workGetty Images The Royal College of Psychiatrists warns that vacancies must be filled or planned improvements will fail Plans to transform mental health services in England will fail if the rise in unfilled NHS psychiatrist posts continues, the profession is warning.
The number of vacancies has doubled in six years - and is particularly marked in children's services, says the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
One in 10 consultant posts - 568 out of 5,730 - is vacant, up from one in 20 in 2013, a census by the college suggests.
The government pledged an extra £2.3bn a year by 2023-4 to improve care.
The college told the Victoria Derbyshire programme the vacancy rates amount to 9.9% in England, 9.7%, in Scotland, 7.5% in Northern Ireland and 12.7% in Wales. The overall UK rate is 9.6%.
Children's services
It described the figures as alarming at a time of soaring demand for care and lengthy waits for treatment, and when it is attempting to bridge the gulf in recruitment between psychiatry and other disciplines.
The census asked NHS mental health organisations and private providers in the UK about numbers of psychiatrists in non-training-grade posts. Some 89% of NHS organisations responded.
The findings suggested vacancy rates were particularly high in areas of mental health care already prioritised by the government for improvement, such as children's mental health services.
The average vacancy rates for these posts were 12% in England overall but 15% in north-west England and 17% in the East and West Midlands.
Although access is improving, currently only 35% of children with mental illness in England receive suitable treatment, according to the UK's Public Accounts Committee.
College president Prof Wendy Burn said of the census: "These findings are very alarming. The government's plans to improve mental health care are laudable, and we fully support them, but without the workforce to deliver them they will fail.
"It needs to address urgently some of the burning issues around the NHS workforce, such as early retirement, the pensions crisis and unacceptable levels of work-related stress."
Presentational grey line 'It's the effect on the family'
Karen Peckover says the wait for mental health treatment led to a rapid deterioration in her condition.
She had become unwell in 2009 and saw her GP who put her on anti-depressants. In October that year she became suicidal but the appointment she was given to see a community psychiatrist was for December.
She was admitted to hospital before that appointment and spent much of the period until 2015 in and out of hospital.
At one point she spent a year in hospital, during which time she had three locum psychiatrists.
"Each time I had a new psychiatrist they changed the medication and treatment plan and sometimes the diagnosis," she said. "If I had managed to see someone quickly this could have been avoided.
"Now I am in recovery. I still take medication, anti-depressants, but I'm able to function now.
"The real problem while you're waiting for treatment is the effect on the family. My husband had to have therapy because of me, and my child has had to have treatment for anxiety, and that makes things worse."
Presentational grey line The college is launching a campaign to encourage junior doctors to train in psychiatry, saying there is a "huge gulf" between the numbers joining mental health roles compared with other disciplines.
Between June 2012 and June 2019 the number of NHS consultant psychiatrists increased by 4.7% compared with a 28.7% rise across all other medical specialties.
Dr Kate Lovett, dean of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, told the Victoria Derbyshire programme a unique set of skills was needed to do the job well.
"Junior doctors tended to think, 'Am I cut out to do this?' And historically, it's been underfunded.
"Medical students just don't seem to be attracted to work in mental health, and it's the same with GPs, too. It's not seen as a prestigious area to go into.
"We need more students going into medical school and we need the NHS to be the best it can be so they're attractive places for medical students."
Officials from Public Health England have launched a website called Every Mind Matters to help people take simple steps to improve their mental wellbeing.
Supported by mental health charities, including Mind, it offers advice on how to deal with stress, low mood, anxiety and trouble sleeping.
At a time of increasing demand for mental health services, a shortage of psychiatrists could lead to lengthy waiting times for patients and have a devastating impact on their lives, the doctors' professional body said.

Second record high for Northern Ireland employment rate but future depends on Brexit
~CXL~
NORTHERN Ireland's employment rate has hit a record high for the second quarter in a row in the April-June period, with an all-time high in the employment rate (up 3.3 per cent to 72.2 per cent) and a historic low in economic inactivity (down to 25.5 per cent).
But the number of people claiming unemployment benefit has been on the rise since last summer (albeit from extremely low levels), showing a marginal increase of 0.2 percentage points relative to the previous 2019, although it is 0.6 per cent lower than the same period in 2018.
However, the economic outlook from both a Brexit and global perspective has darkened, and economists are warning that this, in time, will filter into the labour market.
"We have already seen some tentative signs of the labour market showing signs of weakening or at least coming off the boil," according to Ulster Bank's head number-cruncher Richard Ramsey.
"For example, the number of job vacancies has started to ease in quarter (from record highs), as evidenced in the latest NIJobs.com jobs report, while private sector firms have reduced their staffing levels modestly in the last seven months to July, according to the Ulster Bank Northern Ireland PMI.
"The most closely watched indicator of the jobs market in Northern Ireland is the Quarterly Employment Survey (QES).
"Next month's release for Q2 is expected to reveal another record number of jobs. But the subsequent releases for Q3, due in December, and particularly Q4 (due next March) are expected to reveal a weakening in the labour market. This will follow an expected deterioration in economic output measured by Northern Ireland's Composite Economic Index from Q2."
Mr Ramsey added: "2020 is likely to be much more challenging for the local and national labour markets, so we should enjoy the record highs while they last." Danske Bank chief economist Conor Lambe said the data painted another relatively positive picture of the local labour market, with the most eye-catching news being that the economic inactivity rate fell to the lowest rate on record (although it is still considerably higher than the UK average).
But he warned: “The threat of leaving the EU without a deal at the end of October remains the most significant risk facing our economy. If we are to build on the recent strong performance of the labour market, then it's vital that scenario is avoided.”
FSB regional policy chair Tina McKenzie said: “The persistent issue of economic inactivity is something which has long been a concern to policy makers in Northern Ireland so, given it is continuing to decline, albeit from very high levels, this will provide some comfort that progress is being made.
“However, there is still much that can be done to encourage more people to play a fuller role in the economy. More than a third of women who are economically inactive declare ‘caring for family or home' as the primary reason for their inactivity. Properly investing in childcare, allowing it to be more affordable and accessible, would enable parents to have more choice about the role they play within the economy.”
Martin Cowie, partner at PwC NI cautioned that while the trend of increased employment and falling economic inactivity is encouraging, it comes at a time when the UK economy is experiencing considerable turbulence.
He said: “The ongoing Brexit-related uncertainty continues to stall business investment, and combined with the economy shrinking in the second quarter of the year as well as a weakening global economy, we're left on a knife-edge ahead of October 31.
“The labour market remains highly dependent on what occurs over the next few weeks. Should the UK leave the EU with a deal, it will be positive for workers with local businesses able to move forward with investment plans. It would increase demand for labour which in turn would have a positive impact on wages.
“But if the UK leaves without a deal, the economy may receive a negative shock resulting in a range of other less positive outcomes for workers.”

Best of BBC First 2018 with a cheeky look at 2019
By Alexandra Wilbraham
First published in Dutch translation: https://www.bbcbenelux.com/blog/?article=bbc-first-benelux-best-of-18-19
Joy to the world and welcome to our round-up of BBC First’s best of 2018. Prepare to get festive as we celebrate a fantastic year of BBC series. Stick around to the end to find out what amazing new content you can look forward to in 2019.
So, pull on your Christmas jumper, the one you keep stashed away at the back of your wardrobe and pop on a Santa hat. Make yourself hot cocoa, go the whole hog and decorate your beverage with whipped cream, marshmallows and chocolate shavings. Light some cinnamon candles and snuggle up on the sofa as we dive into the pile of presents this year had to give.
In the first month of 2018, the BBC gave to me! Well, it kind of works. January started with fireworks and a new series of Silent Witness. First broadcast in 1996, the series has seen many cast changes over the years. Series 21, however, saw the return of the amazing Emilia Fox as forensic pathologist Dr Nikki Alexander. She and her dedicated team (Liz Carr, Richard Lintern, David Caves) work closely with the London police to solve a slew of mystifying murders. Sometimes the best witness is a dead one.
Travelling back in time, if I can remember where I parked the T.A.R.D.I.S., to London in the early 1960s, we were again joined by the nuns and nurses of Nonnatus House convent. As they provide care to the expectant mothers of London’s East End, they find themselves tested both personally and professionally. Series 7 of Call the Midwife puts a bit of a downer on the festivities as we said goodbye to the beautiful Barbara (Charlotte Ritchie) whose grave, decorated with a red rose and toy carousel, we lingered on in the poignant final moments. However, with sadness comes joy and we saw both new and familiar faces appear at the convent. Leonie Elliot (Black Mirror) joined the cast as Caribbean midwife Lucille Anderson and a return of Nurse Trixie (Helen George) was heavily hinted at.
Guess what, we’re still in January! But we’re off on our first holiday of the year as we join Detective Jack Mooney (Ardal O'Hanlon) on the sun-soaked island of Saint-Marie. Peaceful isn’t it? Sadly not. Because, even in the beautiful Caribbean, crime will always spoil your day. Series 7 of Death in Paradise has Jack rise to the challenge in a bid to impress the commissioner and make his mark on the island. Luckily, he has his team to support him as he has some almost impossible mysteries to uncover.
Wake up! We’re back from our island vacation and straight into February. Before heading back to city life, we get to spend some time in the English countryside, rolling hills dotted with small villages, rural parish churches and large country houses. There is also a fair bit of murder.
Don’t worry though, as series 6 of Father Brown sees Mark Williams (Harry Potter) return as the charming local priest and amateur detective. Although he is at risk from old foe Katherine Corven, who looks for revenge on Father Brown when she is suddenly released from prison. I think we should move on to March and hopefully, we’ll find ourselves in a safer environment.
To sleep, perchance to dream as March arrives with a series completely new to the BBC – Shakespeare and Hathaway: Private Investigators. No, not William and Anne. Although this comedy-drama mystery is filmed in Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon. Two well-known TV faces, Jo Joyner and Mark Benton, star as chatty ex-hairdresser Luella ‘Lu’ Shakespeare and out-of-shape and short-of-money private inspector Frank Hathaway. The highly unlikely and hugely entertaining detecting duo quickly discover that all is not as peaceful as it seems in their picture-perfect theatre town.
Brace yourself. Our next March series drops us straight to the front line of series 3 of Our Girl. We do get to travel internationally, but this is no holiday. Series 3 takes female army medic Georgie (Michelle Keegan) and the tightknit unit of soldiers in 2 Section from a humanitarian mission in Nepal, across Afghanistan and to a Nigerian refugee camp. With the arrival of old flame Elvis (Luke Pasqualino) and new recruit Maisie (Shalom Brune-Franklin) tugging at her sleeve, Georgie must face the highs and lows of army life while also fighting her own personal battles.   As the soldiers face kidnapping and assassination attempts, they have to confront the ultimate battle: head versus heart.
May the merriness be with you. Or rather the conflict, since this family is already in the divorce court before the relationships start crumbling. New family drama The Split follows Hannah Defoe (Nicola Walker), a member of a family who all work as divorce lawyers in the same firm. Following a bitter argument, Hannah takes a new job at a rival firm where she reconnects with the only other man she ever imagined sharing her life with, and her estranged father returns after 30 years. It sounds exhausting but makes for a smashing series.
Ring the bells everyone! The month of June means we are halfway through our TV year. A perfect time for the first Agatha Christie story to be adapted for the BBC by screenwriter Sarah Phelps, who also penned the script for J.K. Rowlings’s A Casual Vacancy. A wealthy philanthropist is murdered and her son Jack dies in prison, accused of her murder. A year later, a mysterious stranger arrives to prove Jack’s innocence. If his story is true, the murderer is still in the family. In one of Christie’s most satisfying stories, the cast presents a host of well-known faces, including Bill Nighy and Anna Chancellor. Murder, plot twists and a fantastic cast. Can it get any better?
It most definitely can! September brings with it the second instalment of Christie magic. Now, how well do you know the person next to you? It’s the question that made Agatha Christie the best-selling novelist of all time. And Then There Were None sports an all-star cast, including Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) and Aidan Turner (Poldark). Ten strangers, each accused of a terrible crime, are lured to an island mansion and quickly find themselves at the mercy of their unknown host. And Then There Were None has seen many adaptations, but this is the first screen version to include Agatha Christie’s original, less cheery, ending.
It’s time for the home stretch everyone! With October we welcome a third Agatha Christie series. In Sarah Phelps’s second Christie adaptation for the BBC, the cast is headed by Toby Jones and Kim Cattrall. Witness for the Prosecution is the perfect Film Noir for a 1920s London. It’s a thrilling two-part drama about the murder of the rich and glamorous Emily French. All evidence points towards her young lover Leonard, but how will the jury decide?
The cold days and Idris Elba go together like bread and butter, or an attractively greying beard and a warm woollen coat. In Series 4, Luther introduces himself very non-dramatically: ‘There are some things you might have heard about me that could be true.’ If that is how Luther introduces himself to his colleagues, you should take care not to become his enemy. After a leave of absence living a reclusive life on the English coast, Luther is back in London on the trail of a cannibalistic killer, while also attempting to uncover the truth behind Alice's apparent death. With trouble following him wherever he goes, the case is fast becoming a test that will push Luther closer to the edge than he’s ever been before.
There we are. 2018 is all wrapped up, but there are more presents under the tree. 2019 is just around the corner and there is so much BBC content to look forward to. Why don’t you have a peek?
In 2019, fans can look forward to Emilia Fox’s 14th outing as Dr Nikki Alexander. Cast members David Caves, Liz Carr and Richard Lintern are also confirmed to return. Although not much is known about the 22nd series, actor Richard Lintern has said the new series will focus on bringing in London more as a character than has been done before.
New year, new Call the Midwife. Harry Potter star Miriam Margolyes, who will always be Professor Sprout to me, joins the cast for the Christmas special and the first episode of series 8. Fenella Woolgar (Victoria & Abdul) and Ella Bruccoleri (Genius: Picasso) move to Poplar as newcomers Hilda and Frances and (yeah!) Helen George returns as Nurse Trixie Franklin.
In series 8 of Death in Paradise, Shyko Amos joins the cast as officer Ruby Patterson. She has, what shall we say, a unique take on crime fighting. From a local radio DJ murdered while live on air to a zookeeper killed by a poisonous dart, Jack and his team definitely have their work cut out.
Welcome back to the beautiful English countryside. Let’s just take some deep breaths of fresh air and ignore Father Brown trapped outside on what is a dark and stormy night, with a murderer on the loose. Don’t bother yourself with the kidnap of Lady Felicia and Mrs McCarthy. I’m sure everything will be fine.
A new adaptation of Victor Hugo's 19th-century classic Les Misérables is packed full of big-name actors and this time none of them has to sing. A brave choice, considering the success of the long-running musical and Oscar-winning Hollywood film. Dominic West will lead the cast as Jean Valjean, with David Oyelowo as the obsessed and villainous policeman Javert. Olivia Colman takes on the role of the abusive Madame Thénardier, while Lily Collins will play Fantine. Adapted by Andrew Davies (War and Peace, House of Cards), the six-part drama will delve deeply into the story of love, revolution and survival, vividly bringing to life the vibrant and engaging characters.
When you manage to book Richard Geer (Chicago, Pretty Woman) in his first major television role for 30 years, you’d better have a story to match. MotherFatherSon is an eight-part original drama created and written by Tom Rob Smith (The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story). The story revolves around the toxic relationships of a mother, a father and, err, I forget the last one. Anyway, Gere plays Max, the owner of one of the world’s most influential media empires. When his son Caden’s (Billy Howle) self-destructive lifestyle spirals out of control, he and his estranged wife Kathryn (Helen McCrory) have very different ideas about how best to support him.
And finally, he might not be sporting Hercule Poirot’s trademark moustache, but John Malkovich as the iconic detective is already heading the list of 2019 must-watch television. Malkovich is joined by a collage of well-known faces, including Ron Weasley, I mean Rupert Grint, as Inspector Crome. 2019 sees the adaptation of the ABC Murders by the incomparable Sarah Phelps.
Poirot faces a serial killer known only under the alias ABC. Using the British railway network, the killer strikes methodically, leaving behind nothing but a copy of the ABC railway guide. Poirot must find a way to match his nemesis and, in the process, everything about him will be called into question: his authority, his integrity, his past, his identity.
And finally, that’s 2018 dusted off and stored back in the attic. I hope you enjoyed our little excursion through the best of BBC First. With 2019 almost upon us there is so much more amazing BBC content to come. What were your favourite series and moments of 2018? Are you looking forward to a fabulous 2019 on BBC First? I definitely am.
From me and all of us at the BBC a very merry festive season and a happy new year!

With official data recording that there were 1.1 million vacancies in the three months to September[2], Indeed’s research reveals the huge challenge faced by employers battling to hire extra staff in the run-up to Christmas.

How Many Republicans Are Currently In The Senate
New Post has been published on https://www.patriotsnet.com/how-many-republicans-are-currently-in-the-senate/
How Many Republicans Are Currently In The Senate
Tumblr media
Focus On Competitive Races
Republicans on track to keep U.S. Senate majority
Democrats targeted Republican-held Senate seats in Arizona and Nevada. Seats in Texas,Mississippi and Tennessee were also competitive for the Democrats. Republicans targeted Democratic-held seats in Indiana, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota and West Virginia, all of which had voted Republican in both the 2012 presidential election and the 2016 presidential election. Seats in Florida, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan, all of which voted for Trump in 2016, were also targeted by Republicans. The Democratic-held seat in New Jersey was also considered unexpectedly competitive due to corruption allegations surrounding the Democratic incumbent.
Four Flips For Democrats One For Republicans
Going into the election, the Democrats held 47 seats in the U.S. Senate while the Republicans held 53.
The Democrats have succeeded in flipping four seats: in Colorado, where former Governor John Hickenlooper easily ousted incumbent Cory Gardner, in Arizona, where former astronaut Mark Kelly defeated incumbent Martha McSally, and in Georgia, where Raphael Warnock defeated incumbent Kelly Loeffler and Jon Ossoff defeated incumbent David Perdue.
The Republicans have wrested back one previously Democratic seat in Alabama, where one-term incumbent Doug Jones was emphatically denied a second term by Tommy Tuberville, a former college head football coach, most recently at the University of Cincinnati.
Outgoing freshman Sens. Jones and Gardner were both considered vulnerable, as each was elected with less than 50% of the vote in 2018.
Republican Thom Tilliss victory over Cal Cunningham in North Carolinaby less than 2 percentage points according to the North Carolina Secretary of States latest tallyis one of several close Senate races that were not called until after election night. In addition to the seats from Georgia, close races also include the victories of incumbent senators Gary Peters and Susan Collins , which were not called until Nov. 4.
How Many Us Senators Are There
How many US senators are there? Senators are legislators who represent their constituents to advocate and enact laws that will benefit the people. In the United States, compared to other countries, there are several senators who represent their constituents in the senate. There are about 100 senators, but how are they elected? For people voting, it helps to know what their senators do for them.
Don’t Miss: House Democrats And Republicans
Is It Realistic To Think That Schumer And Mcconnell Will End Up Striking An Agreement As Lott And Daschle Did
It will be tougher, given the increasing polarization of politics generally and the Senate specifically.
The Lott-Daschle agreement may be difficult to replicate, Smith said. Lott struggled to get his majority party to agree to the terms he negotiated after the 2000 elections. With so many uncompromising members of his party conference, McConnell will find it even more difficult.
Stewart Verdery, who worked for then-Sen. Don Nickles, R-Okla. said that he expects McConnell to argue that the 2001 precedent is fair and appropriate.
At the moment, I give them only a 60 percent chance of agreeing to a bipartisan power-sharing plan, Smith said.
An early sign of how things are going will be how quickly the parties agree on the power sharing agreement and how much the Republicans get from the agreement, Ryan said. Will it reflect what happened , or will the Democrats push it a little farther?

A version of this Voter Vital was first published on October 15, 2019. It was updated on January 29, 2021.
Brookings hosted a debate on the merits of filibuster reform measures on January 20, 2021. to watch a recording of the event where Richard Arenberg, director of the Taubman Center for American Politics and Policy at Brown University, argued to keep the filibuster and University of Texas, El Paso Assistant Professor Carlos Algara argued to eliminate it.

Midterms Produce Divided Congress: What Does Future Hold
Most prominently, more Republican senators will help the party and the president continue to push through conservative judges onto the federal bench. Should another Supreme Court vacancy arise before the 2020 elections, Republicans will have more votes to help them get a nominee through a grueling confirmation battle.
Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said as much in a tweet after the GOP was projected to retain control of the Senate.
When the GOP maintains control of the Senate, the conservative judicial train is going to keep running!
And with speculation strong that Attorney General Jeff Sessions will be replaced following the election, more Republicans in the Senate means that a potential replacement may have a slightly easier time being confirmed.

Barrasso, a medical doctor who graduated from Georgetown and Yale, runs the committee in charge of summarizing and analyzing major GOP legislation. Last week he called the recently announced US-China deal irresponsible and expensive.
To me, this is an agreement thats terrible for the United States and terrific for the Chinese government and for the politicians there, because it allows China to continue to raise their emissions over the next 16 years, Barrasso said.
All of us want to make energy as clean as we can as fast as we can, he said. We want to do it in ways that dont raise the energy costs for American families and impact their jobs, income, ability to provide for their families. Those are the issues we need to be focusing on.

How Likely Are We To See A Change To The Filibuster In 2021
But the filibuster could still survive unified party control. Senators often speak about their principled support for the filibuster. But senators views about the rules are more often shaped by their views about policy. There would likely need to be a specific measure that majority party senators both agreed upon and cared enough about to make banning the filibuster worth it. As Republicans experience in the first two years of the Trump administration suggest, such proposals may be easier imagined than achieved.
In addition, individual senators may find the filibuster useful to their own personal power and policy goals, as it allows them to take measures hostage with the hopes of securing concessions. For majority party leaders, meanwhile, the need to secure 60 votes to end debate helps them to shift blame to the minority party for inaction on issues that are popular with some, but not all, elements of their own party. Finally, senators may be concerned about the future; in an era of frequent shifts in control of the chamber, legislators may worry that a rule change now will put them at a disadvantage in the near future.
United States Senate Election In Maine

2020 United States Senate election in Maine
Collins:Gideon:
The 2020 United States Senate election in Maine was held on November 3, 2020, to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the State of Maine, concurrently with the 2020 U.S. presidential election, as well as other elections to the United States Senate, elections to the United States House of Representatives and various state and local elections. This was Maine’s first election for its Class 2 seat to use its ranked choice voting system.
During his presidency, Collins’s stance on Trump waffled, as he did not share her moderate politics but had a strong base in Maine’s sprawling, rural 2nd congressional district. Collins voted for the against the Affordable Care Act repeal, but for the GOP’s 2017 tax bill and voted to acquit Trump in his first impeachment. She voted to confirm Trump’s nominees Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, but against the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett just days before the 2020 election, citing disagreement with process.

How Republicans Pulled Off A Big Upset And Nearly Took Back The House
There seemed to be one safe bet when it came to the 2020 election results: Democrats would easily hold on to their majority in the House of Representatives. Not only that, but the conventional wisdom held that Democrats would pick up more than the 235 seats they won in the 2018 midterm elections.
While Democrats will have a majority next Congress, Republicans vastly outperformed expectations and nearly pulled off an election shocker.
As of this writing, CNN has projected that Democrats have won in 219 seats. Republicans have been projected the winners in 203 seats. There are 13 races outstanding, per CNN projections.
Of those 13, the Democratic candidates lead in a mere two of them.
In other words, if every one of those 13 seats went to the party leading in them right now, Democrats would have 221 seats to the Republicans$2 214 seats in the next Congress.
Talk about a fairly close call for Democrats.
Now, Democrats may end up winning a few of the seats where they are currently trailing, but chances are they will end up at or south of 225 seats.
Compare that to what most quantitative forecasters who look at a slew of indicators predicted. Jack Kersting came the closest at 238 seats. FiveThirtyEight clocked in at 239 seats. The Economist model predicted that Democrats would win a median of 244 seats in their simulations.
Any sort of shy Trump vote was far smaller than a potential shy House Republican vote.
A 4- or 5-point miss is considerable.

Leader Behind Bleach Miracle Cure Claims Trump Consumed His Product
Daniel Strauss
Ahead of an important procedural vote on Democrats expansive voting rights bill, the feeling among Senate Democrats is a mixture of gloom and defiance.
Daniel Strauss
Asked today if he thought Sen. MANCHIN in the end votes for S1, Sen. Kaine said:YesIm not giving you intel but I think so. I think so.
The Senate is scheduled to vote on advancing Democrats voting rights package, the For the People Act, Tuesday afternoon and the wide expectation among Democrats and Republicans is the bill will be blocked through the filibuster, a legislative maneuver that lets a minority of senators stall or block movement on a bill.
For Democrats, in a perfect world the failure of the voting rights bill would trigger an effort in Congress to defang the filibuster.
But there is no support among the Republican caucus for gutting the filibuster, and not quite enough unity in their own caucus to get rid of the rule.
That leaves them with an unclear path forward on passing the Biden administrations agenda or key protections for voting as Republican state lawmakers across the country push new laws that critics say are meant to hinder voting by voters of color.
My hope is that if what we see is a unified effort to filibuster voting rights it will stiffen the spine of my Democratic colleagues to protect our democracy, Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia, a Democrat, said.
That spending reflects the sense of defiance among Democratic lawmakers as well.

Oldest Members Of Current Us Senate
As the upper chamber of Congress, the United States Senate is home to some of the most powerful people in America. Since there are currently no limits on how often a senator can run for reelection, for better or for worse, many of them successfully manage to hold on to their positions for several decades, consecutively winning reelection every six years. Additionally, senators tend to be senior citizens, as all of the senators, who range in age from 76 to 87, on this list prove.
As of February 2021, the information on this list is as accurate as possible and will be updated as needed.
Bleach Peddler: Trump Consumed Miracle Cure
Ed Pilkington
The leader of a spurious church which peddled industrial bleach as a miracle cure for Covid-19 is claiming he provided Donald Trump with the product in the White House shortly before the former president made his notorious remarks about using disinfectant to treat the disease.
In the 90-minute interview he effectively presents himself as the source of Trumps fixation with the healing powers of disinfectant.
We were able to give through a contact with Trumps family a family member the bottles in my book, Grenon says. And he mentioned it on TV: I found this disinfectant.

Specific Job Of A Senator
Senators have different jobs and functions. For one, they represent constituents regarding their concerns in their respective districts. As the voted senator, they have different functions and job responsibilities to give service to the people who voted for them.
Senators enact laws that protect freedom, provide social services, infrastructure development and a whole lot more.
Aside from representing their constituents, they also share information. Senators share information to the public.
As they hold press conferences for new legislation as well as its impacts on the state, people get updated on what is happening. They are aware and conscious. They also give presentations, speeches, etc.
Another main function of the senate is to introduce legislation. What they do is identify new bills that have to be passed. They will have to weigh the pros and the cons, benefits and costs and the priorities to pass specific new laws that need to be passed right away. Before a law is passed, it undergoes the policy-making process.
Senators will consult their stakeholders and conduct various discussions and consultations. After which, they call for organizations and other people to support the new legislation. When the bill is finalized, they will send the bill to the Senate desk.
Eric Holder: There Is Still A Fight For Democrats Against Gop Gerrymandering
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In McConnells Kentucky, for instance, Republicans are divided over how far to go during the upcoming redistricting process, which they control in the deep-red state. The more extreme wing wants to crack the Democratic stronghold of Louisville, currently represented by Rep. John Yarmuth. More cautious Republicans like McConnell are willing to settle for smaller changes that reduce Democratic margins while stuffing more Republican voters into hotly contested swing districts.
Make no mistake: McConnells caution isnt rooted in any newfound respect for the integrity of our electoral process. Instead, Republicans are mainly worried about avoiding the costly and embarrassing court decisions that invalidated their most extreme overreaches and potentially turn the line-drawing over to the courts. So McConnells approach doesnt reject partisan gerrymandering it just avoids the type of high-profile city-cracking that could land the Kentucky GOP in federal court.
