OET - English Proficiency Test for Medical Professionals

OET is a shortened form of Occupational English Training. This test is taken by specialized professionals such as nurses, doctors, and pharmacists. OET is an English language proficiency test, similar to the IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE, but professionals only take it. Individuals in several countries must produce an OET score to work as certain professionals, particularly in the medical field. It evaluates each of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

The exam is divided into four components, comparable to the IELTS. While writing and speaking tests are provided in 12 different areas of healthcare, reading, and listening tests are universal.  OET results are recognized in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, Namibia, and Singapore.

 There are four modules in OET:

1. OET Listening

The OET Listening test has a time limit of 45 minutes. This listening test is divided into three sections and has 42 questions. The structure of the listening sub-test is as follows:

Part A consists of consultation extracts 

It is examined here, your ability to recognize specific information while listening to the audio, also known as consultation excerpts. You will hear two recorded talks between a health practitioner and a patient after the tape begins. You must answer the questions or take notes using the information from the recording.

Part B consists of short workplace extracts.

This section assesses your ability to recognize the details, gist, opinion, or purpose of short extracts from the healthcare workplace. You will hear six recordings or short excerpts of team briefings, handovers, or health professional-patient conversations. For each extract, you must answer one multiple-choice question.

Part C consists of presentation excerpts 

You will be evaluated on your capacity to evaluate a recorded presentation or interview on a variety of open-access healthcare issues in Part B. When you play the recording, you will hear two lengthy excerpts. For each extract, you must answer six multiple-choice questions.

 2.  OET Reading

OET Reading is 60 minutes long, has 42 questions, and is broken into three parts must answer questions about general healthcare subjects.

 Part A

To discover specific information from the texts, you must read four brief texts named A, B, C, and D. They cover general healthcare issues. Some of the questions here correspond to the following: sentence completion, and short answer questions.

 Part B

The second portion requires you to identify material and connect it to questions in six brief extracts. The topics discussed in this section are general healthcare topics. The questions are mostly multiple-choice. These excerpts cover everything from policy guidelines to hospital instructions, manuals, emails, and memos to internal correspondence.

 Part C

This section demands careful reading. You must recognize the information, understand its aspects, and answer the multiple-choice questions.

 3.  OET Writing

 You will have 45 minutes to complete the OET Writing Correction Section. The first five minutes should be spent analyzing the assignment. The following minutes will be spent writing the letter. This could be a letter of transfer, recommendation, or discharge in the candidate's specialty. The candidate must add important details in an appropriate framework based on the case notes. This work varies depending on the profession.

 4. OET Speaking

 The OET Speaking portion requires the candidate to act out a real-life situation involving a health professional and a patient. This work, like writing, is unique to each professional. It begins with the Pre-Test Introduction, which includes personal questions. The candidate is then given two role-play cards, one after the other. You will have two to three minutes to prepare. The examiner or interlocutor acts as the patient. The role-plays are made up of several scenarios, and the background material is detailed on the cards. This will put your communication abilities to the test.
