Salted caramel? Oh that sounded delicious! Despite not trying very many foods, the idea of mixing flavors sounded fun. Especially if they were pleasant surprises like chips and ice cream.

“Is it?” It seemed so normal to her at the time, but then taste buds were funny things. “Oh! Then you should definitely try it! I think I have found that salty and sweet combinations are my favorite. I am try to move off of food pills. They were all the rage in the 51st century, but I like flavor more.”

Headcanon - The Favourite Coffee Shop

Shortly after Damien began working in the public sector, he began to frequent a small coffee shop just across the road from the main entrance to the park. It was quaint, but had a strong sense of 'home' in the choice of decor. He was known for spending afternoons in a cosy chair by the window, doing work and watching the world go by.

Once he became Mayor, those times became rarer, but he was sure to visit on his break as much as he could during the week. After a month in office, he was invited to the coffee shop. The owner had commissioned a small plaque:

The Other Worlds 2019 preview Day 4

Returning for a sixth exciting year, Other Worlds, one of the premier SciFi Film Festivals in the US, features some of the best and unheralded genre films. Beginning on Thursday December 5 at Austin’s Galaxy Highland 10, the four day event includes over 20 feature films, a slew of shorts, a screenwriting workshop, and the Mary Shelley Award. This year also features the return of Under Worlds, which brings the best of indie to Austin.

Not terribly surprising to anyone who regularly follows my writings, I’ll be there.

Here’s what to expect at Other Worlds 2019.

11:15AM AROUND THE SUN (Texas Premiere)

A film location finder is shown around a repossessed, crumbling French château. Over the course of the afternoon, he slowly falls for both the place and the owner’s flirtatious representative, as she recounts the story of a famous book set there. But is their present-day connection for real, or just a projection of the book’s 17th Century characters? As the scene plays over in different variations, the two almost lovers orbit around each other like a binary star system, forever circling but never quite reaching each other.

Boundaries will be crossed, reality will fail, and mayhem will ensue. The family our kids come across, this time, can also be seen as the grandparents of THE ADAMS FAMILY. THE OLD DARK HOUSE, is FRANKENSTEIN director, James Whale’s follow up horror film that also stars the previously unknown Boris Karloff and is a precursor to their final film together, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. Like many films of the day, it was released with a “library score,” music not specifically composed for the title. Award-winning composer Jay Woelfel has composed a brand new 52-minute music score, the first ever done for the film.

THE HONEYMOON PHASE caps off the 2019 Other Worlds Program with a love story covered in tension and drama. On top of the thrilling relationship ride, the film will leave the audience with plenty to contemplate and discuss until Other Worlds 2020 begins.

Workplace safety concerns expressed at N.B. cannabis committee hearing

The Saint John business community spoke out about the legalization of marijuana at a public hearing on Tuesday.

The New Brunswick government's Select Committee on Cannabis is conducting hearings around the province in advance of setting regulations governing the sale of marijuana.

The Select Committee on Cannabis, composed of eight MLAs, was informed ofconflicting opinions at the hearing. Among the presenters Tuesday was industrial giant J.D. Irving.

Chris Macdonald, J.D. Irving’s director of government relations,expressed concerns about workplace safety when marijuana is legalized next year.

“It has now stepped up to a point where the increased usage is really a concern,” says Macdonald. “The recreational era will likely increase much more than the medical side.”

The company is one of the region’s largest industrial firms employing thousands of people in every sector of the Maritime economy.

MacDonald says roadside testing,similar to blood alcohol testing,is neededto address safety concerns.

"I think what we need is comprehensive drug and alcohol testing program, regulatory framework, no different than what the United States has had since 1995,” he says.

Ross Wetmore,New Brunswick PC MLA, says no matter employers from many different industries share concerns.

"Whether its forestry, trucking, transportation, they're very concerned that their employees certainly aren't breaking the law,” says Wetmore.

The chair of the Select Committee on Cannabis, Benoit Bourque,declined to comment on where he falls on the issue, saying thehearings are for the general public to offer opinions.

"But I can say as a New Brunswicker, yes of course, workplace safety is a primary concern for the government of New Brunswick and we've been listening very closely to what they were saying,” says Bourque.

J.D. Irving has examined other jurisdictions where pot has been legalized, like Colorado where there are more medical marijuana facilities than pharmacies and thestate has been seeing a troubling trend on the road.

"It's big business down there and what we are seeing in some of the stats that are happening as a result of that increased prevalence and increase usage and that's really the concern,” says MacDonald.

The committee has until September 1 to submit a report to the government. The report will shape the legalization of marijuana on July 1, 2018.
