Over the years, Raven had gifted Price a series of odd-looking lighters. It started because she knew he wasn’t one for receiving gifts, despite being an adamant gift-giver himself showering the team and her with stuff. The stubborn Captain always put on a show, huffing and grumbling about whenever he was handed something, as if accepting gifts was a personal grudge. So, it became an unconscious challenge for Raven, which was to get him something so good that he’ll have to accept it without protest.
There was a few trial and error, starting with cigars cause if it’s not a big fish that puts a big smile on his Quokka fuzzy face then it’s those damn cylindrical things. It started with some strange cigars (didn’t fazed him), then a few rare vintage ones (does accept it, but didn’t felt nearly as satisfying). Undeniably, his collection far outmatched her efforts because that man knows his cigars well.
The “challenge” almost seemed impossible. That was, until one time, on her way back from Amsterdam, she stumbled across a lighter shaped like a grenade, refillable too, whatever that meant. It was hanging on the wall of a shop selling other odd items from crystals to boots. Random, but she managed to buy it. When she handed it to Price, the way he laughed, booming and followed up with a fond shake of his head— that’s when she knew she found it.
So from then on, the collection grew. Without fail, every so often, she’d find the most funny, adorable, or vintage lighter she could. A Nokia phone-shaped lighter. A cake-shaped one. A toaster lighter. A cigarette stick-shaped one. The list goes on, and Price kept them all.
He knew exactly what she was doing. It was endearing. Honestly, he’d take anything from her, even a small rock. But what he cherished most wasn’t the gifts themselves, it was knowing she thought of him, that she spent time picking out something just to make him smile. Imagine the nose scrunches and the mumbles she does if she disagree with something. Or the look on her face when he “approves” the gift, that look of accomplishment in her eyes, the twinkle and pride in them, that was his favorite part of the whole thing.
