Izzy and Nic Learn a Lesson
Tumblr media
Izzy dresses for school in her Girl Scout Uniform since she has a meeting after school, while Nic has to borrow Izzy’s jumper outfit because she forgot to put her wet clothes in the dryer.  She longs for her usual jeans and tee shirt.
Tumblr media
Their history teacher teaches them about how Nelson Mandela worked to end apartheid in South Africa.  They learn that even though the laws have changed, it’s much more difficult to change somebody’s heart.
Tumblr media
That evening, Izzy and Nic talk about the U.S. figure skating scandal.  Izzy says that Nancy Kerrington is a more graceful skater but Nic defends Tonya Harding pointing out that she is a stronger athlete who can land much more difficult jumps.
Tumblr media
When Oksana Baiul wins Olympic gold in ladies figure skating, both girls are impressed by her skating which they agree is the result of so much practice and dedication.  Izzy points out that even though Tonya placed 8th, that meant she was the eighth best at something in the world.  Nic says that Nancy showed great strength overcoming her injury to skate and medal at the Olympics.

I’m the Anon who has the mom with weird skating opinions. She liked Bock because she is into the time symbolism thing and doesn’t care if they don’t skate as much. She liked the tension in dance with the “girl in pink and the guy who was in like pink and gray?” and how it was “wuthering heightsy” (before I explained to her that it was, in fact, Wuthering Heights). I had to ask her about LaLa specifically, which I did by describing their costumes after how she talked about CPom and G/P, and she just said “their skating was so beautiful I didn’t even notice what they wore.” She hates the ‘80s theme for the RD so she liked L/B because it wasn’t typical 80s music (though she did do some of the Thriller dance moves along with LaLa when she watched them—the rest she just sort of wrinkled her nose at). She felt like the Italians were “not cohesive” in their FD but stopped to make me watch them do the Farrucas lift.
For reference, she was a huge Torvill and Dean fan back in the 1980s. I remember her preferring Krylova and Ovsyannikov to Grishuk and Platov. She rooted for Oksana Baiul over Nancy Kerrigan. For ice dance, she prefers the FD to anything else. I also remember her really liking early Davis and White (Eleanor Rigby and Samson and Delilah) over Belbin and Agosto, but she always loved Virtue and Moir (especially Umbrellas and Mahler). She was usually underwhelmed by P/C but liked G/P’s Vincent program (but was bitchy about Piper’s costume before she realized what the program was).
ohh so she knows and used to follow skating 💙 i like when people have eclectic and interesting opinions. i’m team Oksana (over Nancy) too, and VM of course lol i haven’t gotten to Krylova and Ovsyannikov and Grishuk and Platov to know what that means yet, but i look forward to seeing what your mom might see in one over the other☺️

On this #IWD, #CSADOSDalum shared this post: Coming out of the Herbert Wells Spring Invitational in College Park, MD, our alum met famed skate Coach Rory Flack. (Photo on right). Coach Flack ( yes, related to Roberta Flack) was in the audience. Our alum wrote: My Adult Production Team from The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD had just earned their 3rd First Place Medal this season and Coach Flack *was there appreciating every move on ice! What’s next? Our alum is preparing for her latest performance since retirement from @statedept: Team name: The Gardens Ice House Adult Production Team. Event: "Production" - a themed, 4-minute skit on ice. Team theme - "Flight". *About Coach Flack: #csadosdexcerpts from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rory_Flack Rory Flack (Flack-Mitchell[1]) (born April 28, 1969) is a professional African American Figure Skater and former competitor. She is the first African American woman to perform a back flip on the ice (in 1991) and in 1994 she became the first African American woman to win the US Open Professional Figure Skating Championships. She is very well known for her signature Russian splits.[2] In 1994, Flack was invited to join The Nutcracker on Ice. She co-starred as the Sugar Plum Fairy alongside Olympic champions Oksana Baiul and Brian Boitano… Still driven to win the US Open, she trained daily from 2 am to 4 am. Flack entered the US Open, where the reigning world champion Yuka Sato also planned to compete. Performing to Aretha Franklin's "Think", Flack took first place after the Technical Program and went on to win the title. In April 2012, Flack started dividing her time coaching between Alaska; Houston, TX; Provo, Utah; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; and New Jersey, and offered clinics worldwide. #iceskating #usopenskating #roryflack https://www.instagram.com/p/CpiDITPOEAv/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
