I love this one. We’ve not spent nearly enough time together, but over the years I grow more and more fond. She is so beautiful, genuine, honest, absurdly talented but above all...kind. Love you, Cornell! Can’t wait to rendezvous again soon! Melbourne adventures?? Where Do Little Birds Go? (Old Fitz Theatre)
30 August 2016
One upon a time... 24 year old Lucy Fuller was still 18, working in a Whitechapel nightclub, dreaming of being a singer, and was kidnapped by the Kray Twins for an escaped murders’ “entertainment”. Camilla Whitehill’s one woman show is a fairy-tale of the late 1960s sparkly surface glamour and social freedom. Unfortunately for Lucy, like most such tales (and parties in general) the later it gets, the darker it becomes. Casting was critical, and Bishanyia Vincent is perfect as the smiling, glass half full Lucy, whether any excuse to sing, putting a happy spin on having to “spend time” with club customers to make ends meet after her uncle’s death... and the horror of her days in captivity (a shocking, silent acting set-piece). Lucy thinks – she hopes – that now, 6 years later, she is safe, but the smile is cracking, and Vincent sells the journey superbly, creating a real person the audience likes and cares deeply for. Performed on the same Old Fitz set as the well-acted-and-staged revival of “Look Back in Anger”, “Birds” is fresher (duh), livelier, and was one the best of Redline Production’s impressive 2016 slate. Which makes it very good indeed.

Henna Night (Old Fitz Theatre)
5 July 2016
Loss and love are playing out for Judith (Jane Angharad) and Ros (Romney Stanton) respectively – and it’s over the same bloke. A broken Judith’s late night phone message has the intended “come home to me” effect. Unfortunately it’s the angry Ros, not the “ex”, who appears on the door of what was Judith’ love sanctuary and now feels to her like a hospice. Claws out. Camilla Whitehall’s sad, real play is shrewdly staged as part of Old Fitz Theatre late show, as the actors capture the varying emotions that run high when people are tired, angry (and often drunk) and their characters, who might have been friends without That Man, fight out their differences and feelings on a shaky neutral ground of, all things, hair colouring.

Babes in the Woods: Australian Purity Defil’d
10 January 2017
Pantomime. n. 1. (in Britain) a kind of play performed at Christmas time characterised by farce, music, lavish sets, stock roles, and topical jokes.  2. (in Old Fitz Theatre Sydney) struth, yup, as above... and among the most audience rowdy, smiley fun in town (no laughter instructions needed), with a distinctive ‘Stralia flavour/ setting/ mad sense of humour/ topical outrage. [applause]
If you have an allergic reaction to pantomime (aww...), this riot of colourful, [multiple applause]ly acted, hilarious entertainment, with easily understood instructions (they appear in neon), will change your mind. Writer/Director Phil Rowse and Don’t Look Away Theatre Co snappily remakes a Tom Wright script that reset Hansel, Gretel and Cinderella into the Australia Outback. Evil Aunty Avarica (her real name: it’s in a Will) schemes to get her mits on her deceased bro’s money by leaving his kids to die in the bush [boo! Hiss!], aided by [it’s behind you]: an easily confused, scene stealing Emu; oddly raising temperature of The Sunburnt Continent; blood thirsty ghosts; plot convenient mind shafts; and her daughter distracted by the axe of hot looking, dim voltage Jack. Don’t worry, The Angel of White Privilege is around, and Robbie ‘n’ Ruby prove more resourceful than she expected. How about gender-creative casting? Fantasy film plot points? Beer sale cameo-break by the cast? Wrong Wing politics/ gender stereotype/ Sexism/ Tough Bush Livin’ Hero on-target skewing? A “certainty” rating on the “Will cause Cory The Barmy’s head to explode” scale? (Sorry, Bernardi... nah, correct first time). Cameos by two of 2016’s Biggest Evils? And that Christmas (and Xmas tinsel) continues into January outside the supermarket chains?
[get on with it]: Grab your tickets now, fling lettuce when Evil Acts are performed (Lettuce in panto is like garlic to a vampire, or Nasty Woomun / verified facts to #notmypresident), and settle in for great-y, laugh-y, smiley 70 minutes of fun. [applause] times many.

A Girl with the Sun in Her Eyes (Old Fitz Theatre)
November 2015
New York City. An undercover vice detective (Kate Williams) is missing. Her concerned partner (Martin Crewes) is tearing things apart in his hunt for her, aided and hindered by police colleagues and legal parts of the system. They suspect a local gang member was behind it; since he’s not talking, the choice of truth unlocking key becomes a witness (Jeremy Waters – excellent), who may know more – a lot more – than he’s letting on. Joshua Rollins’ increasingly tense and scary cop thriller plays like a superior entry in TV’s so-called current golden age, and is staged like that too – flash backs, screens fades and so on – with the cast relishing the material and touch guy/gal dialogue. Red Line Productions’ staging makes room for near unbearable, mute climatic acting moments from its two central characters – Waters’ family man whose night out (and maybe some spousal betrayal) has gone horribly wrong, and Williams’ tough capable policewoman, suddenly in way over her head – both trying not to go under for the fatal third time.

The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant (Old Fitz Theatre)
08 November 2016
Fashion guru designer Petra (Sara Wiseman) is used to getting what she wants, preferably yesterday. So when she falls in lust, then love, with a young (married) woman vaguely interested in modelling, it’s a pity Karin (Kate Cheel) has her own wish list.... Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s black comedy drama has been slightly updated for technology and the current Hollywood “names”, but is still the original play about privileged, nasty people being horrible to each other: a play that is also so brilliantly written, so compelling, it becomes the ultimate slow motion car accident – you can’t look away, even though your judgement and conscience tells you should. It’s just too much fun to see what will happen next, so you can get angry at these people again. Matilda Ridgeway steals this production as the never speaking secretary Marlee- conveying her every frustration, anger and jealously with expressions that better a hundred lines of dialogue, and desperate to be a part of a love triangle - heck, even an affection or recognition triangle – with the self-centred Petra.

Low Level Panic ( Red Line Productions at the Old Fitz )
13 July 2016
“Sydney’s talking ‘bout...” deserved hit revival of Clare McIntyre’s landmark play, where three co-dwelling young women (“mates” may be a stretch) deal with unwanted male attention – porn, gazes... and worse – in their everyday lives. Director Justin Martin opens up the original script with emphasised humour, social media/mobile phones, and adds the real physical presence of the hovering men – and Mary’s little girl former self. He also has a perfect cast: Kate Skinner (sensible yet suddenly coming apart Mary); Amy Ingram (scene stealing as confident but lonely Jo); and Geraldine Hakewell (TV’s “Wanted”, as model looks/ My Own Bathroom Time longing OCD-er Cecila).
