This is an interesting picture, for more than one reason. First, lets see who is in it (I don't recognize them all but I will tell you who I recognize.) From left to right, the second woman in white is Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna; there is a woman I don't recognize behind her and then comes her mother, Miechen ( Grand Duchess Maria Palovna the Elder.) in front of Miechen, sitting on a step is Nicholas Nicholaievich (Nicholasha); slightly behind Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna is Olga Paley, Grand Duke Pavel Alexandrovich’s wife. Pavel is next to her, the only person in the picture sitting on a chair. In front of him there is an older gentleman in military garb, whom I don't recognize. Next to him sits a very young Grand Duke Andrei Vladimirovich. Sitting slightly behind Andrei is his brother Grand Duke Boris.
There are at least four interspersed ladies I don't recognize, as well as several officers. All the way to the right, stands the unmistakable Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich.
When I first saw this picture, I noticed that Miechen is resting her hand on Nicholasha’s neck in what to me appeared like a rather intimate gesture. And of course, some time after that I read that there were rumors that Miechen and Nicholasha had an affair (the source for that is not a consistently reliable one.) I don't believe the rumours. Nicholasha was no fool and in no position to offend his older and more powerful cousin, Vladimir, known for his fiery temper. Plus most of the literature states that Miechen and Vladimir we're very well matched and loved each other. But there is the hand…on…Nicholasha’s…neck…
1913 was the Tercentennial of the Romanov family’s dynastic rule, and the eldest Grand Duchess Olga Romanov was coming of age (she turned 18 in early November). The Grand Duchess’s life was full of romance, pageantry and fun. One of her two love interests during that year was a young handsome officer from the imperial yacht: Pavel Alekseyevich Voronov.
In her diary entries Olga seemed incredibly happy to spend time with him, but by the end of the year she faced heartbreak: Pavel got engaged to another Olga – a Romanov family friend Olga Kleinmichel. The Grand Duchess only dares write about it in her diary in a special code she had devised. Below are Olga’s numerous diary entries about Pavel, whom she later called “S.” [for “Sunshine”?], along with their photographs together.
Diaries
“Monday. 10 June… Did not do anything special, walked around the deck, sat in the cabin with Pavl. Al. … After tea played with Pavl. Al. and [other] friends….. Balalaikas were playing during dinner. After that [I] held watch with Pavl. Al. on deck… ”
“Thursday. 20 June… There were boating exercises. Papa kayaked. Cutter-gig escort (Pavl. Al.)…. After dinner T and I went to the control room. Dear Pavl. Al. was writing in the log journal. We sat together until 10 o’cl. … ”
“Friday. 21 June… [I] read and then sat on the afterdeck with Pavl. Al. for a long while. It was so nice… After tea I read on deck with T. Pavl. Al. came at 7 o’cl, and we sat together until 7 1/2. .. It was very funny to watch A talk to Pavl. Al. through the half port on afterdeck. Until 11 ½ [we] sat there with him… ”
"Saturday. 29 June… [We] went ashore at 2 o’cl. 15 min. as usual. Played 7 sets with Pavl. Al. Won only 1 set, because T and Rodionov played well, but I stank… Vsenoshnaya was held on afterdeck… Dear Pavl. Al. is on watch duty, it was so nice. Papa played kosti. I stared at Pavl. Al. from the half-port. Beautiful evening.”
“Friday. 12 July. Peterhof… Pavl. Al. was on watch duty from 8 o’clock… [I] sat in the control room with Pavl. Al., the sisters, Ippolit and Rodionov until our arrival in Kronshtadt at 3 o’cl. It was awfully sad. I stood with him the entire time the gangway was extended. [We] left the yacht at about 4 o’clock. [It] was so awfully hard to part with the beloved Standart, the officers and the beloved [Pavel? – last word is crossed out, probably by Olga]. May the Lord keep him… So sad to be without them… ”
“Thursday. 12 December… We played dobchinsky-bobchinsky and ‘suitcase’ with T., Zborovsky and S. [Voronov was now “S.”. Written in code : “I love him terribly much, and it was so hard, I was angry and almost did not speak to him”]… ”
“Wednesday. 18 December… Lonesome without all the friends, the yacht, and of course S. … “
“Tsarskoe Selo. Thursday. 19 December… I am not as lonesome but still want to see S. at times.”
“Friday. 20 December… My S. arrived today. May the Lord save him and help him.”
“Saturday. 21 December… I found out that S. [Written in code: “My S. is marrying Olga Kleinmichel. May the Lord send him happiness, to my beloved S. So hard. So sad. May he be happy”].”
When she wanted to write something private, Olga used a special code she devised – this is an example of this code in her diary. She used this code most often at the end of 1913, when she learned that Pavel Voronov (her “beloved S.”) got engaged to be married to Olga Kleinmichel.
Did any of the Romanov sisters (Olga,Tatiana,Maria,Anastasia) had a boyfriend at that time?
Im pretty sure the girls growing up. And being teenagers they wanted to have fun (getting drunks or sex)
In my opinion it was very hard cuz their mother Alexandra she was hella STRICT and religious
hi anon! The short answer to this is no they never got the chance to have boyfriends.
The long answer is: OTMA had a lot of little girl crushes on officers and wounded soldiers but they knew that they could never get married because of the difference in rank (Grand Duchess vs. officer)
I will list them all here :)
Olga:
Pavel Voronov (officer on the Standart)
2. Alexander Shvedov aka “AKSHV” (officer)
3. Dmitri Shakh-Bagov aka “Mitya” (wounded soldier)
Tatiana:
Nikolai Rodionov (officer on the Standart)
2. Dmitri Malama (wounded soldier)
Maria: Nikolai Demitrievich Demenkov aka “Kolya” (officer)
Anastasia: Georgiy Taube
And it’s not like Alix was super strict about their crushes! Both her and the girls knew extremely well that they could never end up together.
This is a bracket to determine which of the many memorable NPCs from across the Professor Layton games are the greatest.
GAMES INCLUDED: Every game except LBMR. Eternal Diva characters are also not included here.
WHAT COUNTS AS AN NPC?: Anyone who doesn't have a puzzle animation. Characters excluded are Layton, Luke, Flora, Clive, Emmy, Randall, Aurora, Des, Espella, Phoenix, Maya, Katrielle, Ernest, Sherl, Hastings, and Emiliana.
WILL THERE BE NOMINATIONS?: Nope! Every NPC will be included.
WHAT ABOUT THE LAYTONMOBILE/MOLENTARY EXPRESS?: No vehicles. Not characters.
WHAT ABOUT THE PUZZLE LADS/LASSES?: I only plan on including characters that we can speak to in-game, so no Puzzle Lads or Lasses. Sorry to the people who like them 😔
WHICH CHARACTERS ARE INCLUDED, THEN?: Anyone who isn't an exception listed above that is in the profiles of the game! A full list is enclosed below.
WHEN WILL THE TOURNAMENT START?: More information forthcoming on that! I have to seed the bracket first :)
WHY IS NAIYA YOUR ICON?: In my opinion, she's one of the more underrated NPCs of the series. I'll probably cycle through some of the ones I have available to me right now.
WHAT CRITERIA SHOULD I VOTE ON?: Whatever makes you happy :)
ARE ALTER EGOS SEPERATE CHARACTERS?: No. For instance, Ratman is not included because his secret identity is in the tournament.
US OR UK NAMES?: I will try to make available as many names for the NPCs as possible! Which includes their Japanese names and as many names in the localizations as I am able to obtain from the wiki and my own sources. I'll probably reliably have the English (both versions where applicable), Japanese, and French names for every character when I do the bracket rounds. The list below however is entirely in English.
And now for a list of the entries! I didn't check all of these for inconsistencies, but I attempted to ascertain that I used the US versions. Some of them might be UK versions though because that's the version of the game I have (specifically Diabolical Box NPCs and Last Specter NPCs -- I know some of their US names but not all).
Hi! In your opinion, who were OTMA's favorites from Standard? What were their code names and can you post some pictures with them?
Hello there! Of course :)
Olga Nikolaevna - Olga's favourite officer was Pavel Voronov, who she called 'Pavl. Al.' in her diaries. In 1913 she devised a secret code in order to write about her feelings, and she used the initial 'S' for him.
Tatiana Nikolaevna - Tatiana's favourite officer was Nikolai Nikolaevich Rodionov, who she and her sisters called 'N.N.' in their diaries
Maria Nikolaevna - Maria doesn't seem to have had a particular favourite that she wrote about often in her diaries, but she and her sisters did each have an assigned 'dyadka' (sailor nanny) on the Standart. I will try and find the full list of their names later! Her favourite officer in WWI was Nikolai Demenkov, whom her sisters and parents called 'Fatso'
Anastasia Nikolaevna - Anastasia's favourite officer was Georgi Nikolaevich Taube. Sadly we don't know any nicknames for him, as she burnt all of her diaries.
If you search any of the officer's names on my blog, you should be able to find many more pictures! Hope this was helpful :)
Photographs: 1. Grand Duke Pavel Alexandrovich; 2. Pavel's first wife: Grand Duchess Alexandra Georgievna (Nee Princess Alexandra of Greece and Denmark); 3. Pavel's morganatic wife: Olga Valerianovna, Princess Paley (nee Olga Valerianovna Karnovich).
Grand Duke Pavel Alexandrovich (1860 - 1919) and his children
Grand Duke Pavel was the youngest son of Emperor Alexander II and Empress Maria Alexandrovna. As a child and even as an adult, he had very frail health (but that did not prevent him from being very successful with the ladies and a great dancer.) Politically, Pavel would play his most important role toward the end of the Romanov dynasty, when he largely acted as a liaison between Empress Alexandra and Emperor Nicholas II and the rest of the Romanov family. It was Grand Duke Paul who informed the Empress of the abdication.
Pavel was married twice and had five children. His first wife was Grand Duchess Alexandra Georgievna (nee Princess Alexandra of Greece and Denmark.) He had two children with her, Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna (the younger) and Grand Duke Dmitry Pavlovich (Alexandra died giving birth to him.) Several years later, Pavel married Olga Valerianovna Karnovich morganatically and was exiled from Russia by the Emperor; the couple had a comfortable exile since Paul had money out of Russia. Olga would be made Princess Paley when the couple was allowed to return to Russia. By the time they returned to Russia, they had three children: Vladimir, Irina, and Natalia.
Grand Duke Pavel's five children were remarkably good-looking. One of his daughters, Natalia, became a model and actress in the United States. It is a shame that they had to live through such horrible times; none of them seem to find lasting stability in the area of relationships throughout their lives. But this post is just about what a good example of the general good looks of the Romanov family Pavel's children were.
Following are some photographs of Pavel's beautiful offspring:
