This was posted February of this year, but Conway passed in June of 2024 at the age of 86. I don't really like it because it compresses her remarkable life and career into a tiny, kind of misleading paragraph. It doesn't mention her innovative work pre-transition at IBM, where she worked on the Advanced Computing Systems project and had a hand in the invention of out-of-order scheduling that every modern processor design uses. After her transition, firing, divorce, and the court order preventing her from seeing her children, and abandoned by her friends, Conway had to essentially start a whole new life. For decades she was stealth, until coming out to a computing historian in 1998 and posting her story online on her website. During that time, she didn't just design a chip; working at the revolutionary Xerox PARC research lab she developed new techniques for designing and prototyping VLSI integrated circuits, and literally wrote the book on circuit design that taught a generation of engineers. By the 90s she was an associate dean at the University of Michigan. After coming out to the world in 2000, she married her boyfriend of 15 years and would be an activist for trans rights and acceptance for the rest of her life.
IDK, there are a lot of people who have a "first" in the history of computing technology, but I think only a handful who had this much of an impact.
