“Brown Sugar” by #FreddieRoach was recorded on March 4, 1964, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Roach on organ, #JoeHenderson on tenor, #EddieWright on guitar and #ClarenceJohnston on drums. This was Freddie’s fourth album as a leader. I wasn’t familiar with this album until I picked up the CD a few years ago for $1.99 at the Princeton Record Exchange in Princeton, New Jersey. Thanks to the folks at @HRRecords this weekend I found this Liberty copy in perfect condition. Not sure where Freddie ranks up there with the great organ players, but on this session he’s on fire. My favorite tune of this session is the title track “Brown Sugar” as Freddie gives that power and Joe Henderson has that usual Joe sound, smooth and funky. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife #3rdStreetJazz #jazzrecord https://www.instagram.com/p/CUWQEfMsRcD/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Think!” by the late #DrLonnieSmith was recorded on July 23, 1968, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Smith on organ, #LeeMorgan on trumpet, #DavidNewman on tenor and flute, #HermanHenry and #MelvinSparks on guitar, #PunchoBrown on percussions and #MelvinBooker on drums. This was his second album for @BlueNoteRecords. The strange thing about hearing of his passing last night I was listening to “The Tennessee Waltz” by #LouDonaldson the other day and scrambled to see how many tunes had Doc played on Lou’s “Pretty Things” and found out it was just that piece and thought I need to get more of his music on vinyl into my collection. I have several of his CDs, but very few on vinyl. This reissue is from the #BlueNoteRecords 80th Anniversary/Classic Series which sounds so sweet. I love this album mainly because Lee Morgan is on it and my favorite tune of this session is the title song which was made famous by the late great #ArethaFranklin, but I also enjoy the Latin flavored tune “The Call of the Wild”. This is an enjoyable session, probably not his best, but very enjoyable. Rest In Peace Doc! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #IgJazzCollector #3rdStreetJazz #JazzLife https://www.instagram.com/p/CUaBfEXgO_o/?utm_medium=tumblr

Spent the afternoon at the @dcrecordfair today and found a new record store @mlwl2809 my daughter and I will be visiting in the next few weeks. I also picked up this gem “That Healin’ Feelin’” by @HoraceSilver which was recorded on both April 8 and June 18, 1970, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Silver on piano, #RandyBecker on trumpet and flugelhorn, #GeorgeColeman on tenor, #BenCranshaw on bass, #MickeyRoker on drums, #HoustonPearson on tenor, #JimmyLewis on bass, #IdrisMuhammad on drums, #AndyBey on vocals, #GailNelson on vocals and #JackieVerdell on vocals. I had been looking for this for quite some time. I have it on CD, but I’ve only been able to find blue labeled UA copies and I’ve decided I’m not purchasing any UA’s again and I’m replacing the one’s I have with Liberty’s when I come across one. My favorite piece on this album is “That Happy Medium” that seems to always make it on a playlist. . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife #3rdStreetJazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CUTO6RlPS7C/?utm_medium=tumblr

Today would have been the great #SamRivers 98th birthday, born on this day in 1923 in El Reno, Oklahoma, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 1947, where he studied at the Boston Conservatory. Up until a few years ago I didn’t own any vinyl recordings of Sam as a leader, only on CD where I have everything he’s done on #BlueNoteRecords and #Impulse from the 60’s and 70’s. I first heard Sam on “Miles in Tokyo” by #MilesDavis which I think was his tryout for the tenor spot for Miles “Second Great Quintet” which eventually went to #WayneShorter. A couple years ago I saw this 2-LP 45 RPM “Fuchsia Swing Song” still available on @MusicMattersJazz website and purchased it. The price at the time was still reasonable as well. This was Sam’s first session as a leader and was recorded on December 11, 1964, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Rivers on tenor, #JakiByrd on piano, #RonCarter on bass and #TonyWilliams on drums. This is my favorite Rivers album as Rivers explained the title “Fuchsia Swing Song” got its name from the brightness of the tune made him think of the bright purplish-red color of fuchsia. The CD of course has a few bonus tracks of alternate takes, but the final cuts on the album were the perfect selection. I’m not sure if #MusicMattersJazz still has any available copies of this classic, but hopefully Blue Note Records will include this in their Classic Series because I highly recommend this piece for your collection. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife #3rdStreetJazz #jazzrecord https://www.instagram.com/p/CUPtfvBAftw/?utm_medium=tumblr

On what would have been the great #JohnColtrane 95th birthday today, I tried to think of what album I would post today. As I drove around today, I listened to 6 different Trane albums loaded in my car’s jukebox. I thought about “Crescent”, but my current copy needs an upgrade, and I did buy one of those MCA reissues from 1997 that looks pretty, but I haven’t a chance to actually listen to it. I then thought about “Blue Train” and the fact that I have several different copies of that, and I settled with that. Recorded on September 15, 1957, at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey featuring Trane on tenor, #LeeMorgan on trumpet, #CurtisFuller on trombone, #KennyDrew on piano, #PaulChambers on bass and #PhillyJoeJones on drums. This is a #MusicMattersJazz SRX Series reissue that sounds flawless. As we all know this is Trane’s only #BlueNoteRecords recording as a leader. This session took place at the time Trane was working at the Five Spot as a member of the #TheloniousMonk Quartet and all the compositions with the exception of the standard “I’m Old Fashion” was written by Trane. My favorite piece on this album is the title track “Blue Train which always gave me the feeling I was actually watching a train riding down this lonely track chugg’n away with the stream pouring out of it’s stack. In this piece a young Lee Morgan is making a statement with his solo that he’s gonna be a star in the near future. Curtis Fuller is my favorite trombonist and his playing on this album doesn’t alter my feeling about him. As with all the titles in the MMJ SRX series this is a very enjoyable listening experience every time, I put it on the turntable. It’s like they are playing right in my living room. So I want to say Happy Heavenly Birthday Blessings Trane! . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife @3rdStreetJazz #3rdStreetJazz #jazzrecord https://www.instagram.com/p/CULeqfqPkYD/?utm_medium=tumblr

“This Here Is Bobby Timmons” by the great #BobbyTimmons was recorded January 13 and 14, 1960 in New York featuring Timmons on piano, #SamJones on bass and #JimmyCobb on drums. It was released on the Riverside label later that year and it was Timmons first recorded album as a leader although he did record “Jenkins, Jordan and Timmons” as a co-leader with #JohnJenkins and #CliffordJordan. The funny thing about this album and how it got into my collection is after I left Okinawa, Japan in the fall of 83’ and arrived in Sacramento, Cali CDs were the hot thing in Northern California and the Tower Records I used to buy my music from, and I couldn’t afford a CD player nor these new discs they were selling for that matter. I did find my first copy of this there, an OJC that I cherished, but somehow it had a long scratch on it that until this day and as careful as I was with my records, I have no idea how it got there. Once I arrived in the mainland of Japan about an hour from Tokyo my first trip to Tower Records there, I saw this current copy. The problem was the Yen rate had changed drastically and this album was now about $27 bucks. This was in 1987 and Reaganomics had hit Japan like a typhoon. I love trios and my love for Bobby Timmons made me fork over the $27 bucks for this album. My favorite tunes on this album are “Moanin’” and “Dat Dere” mainly because I love these two pieces on the Messenger’s “Moanin’” album as well. The only thing this version of “Moanin’” is missing is #LeeMorgan opening solo, but Bobby all but makes up for it with his hi-voltage playing along with Sam Jones deep bass sound and Jimmy Cobb’s uplifting beat. This album is a must for your collection if you don’t have it. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife #MoneyJungle @3rdStreetJazz #3rdStreetJazz #jazzrecord #riversiderecords https://www.instagram.com/p/CUGwiilMPoA/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Power of Soul” by #IdrisMuhammad was recorded in March of 1974 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Idris on drums, #RandyBrecker on trumpet and Flugelhorn, #GroverWashingtonJr on tenor and soprano, #BobJames on keyboards, #JoeBeck on guitar, #GaryKing on bass and #RalphMcDonald on percussion. It was released in November pf 1974 on the Kudu Records label. This was one of my favorite albums in high school that I wore out the copy I had, so it was only natural I replaced it with this Japanese copy while I was living in Okinawa in the early 80’s. My favorite piece on this album is “Piece of Mind” with “Loran’s Dance” a close second. I do favor this version of “Loran’s Dance” over Grover’s version on his album “Reed Seed”. But, on “Piece of Mind” Grover’s solo makes you feel like you are gliding in the air. If you don’t have this album in your collection, I highly recommended it if you can find it. Four great tunes. . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife #MoneyJungle @3rdStreetJazz #3rdStreetJazz #jazzrecord https://www.instagram.com/p/CUENauEMYCE/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Cornbread” by #LeeMorgan was recorded on this day September 18, 1965, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Morgan on trumpet, #JackieMcLean on alto, #HankMobley on tenor, #HerbieHancock on piano, #LarryRidley on bass and #BillyHiggins on drums. It was shelved for two years, but despite the success of “The Sidewinder” in 1964 and “Search for the New Land” in 1966 arguably his two greatest albums, this album didn’t sound stale when it was released in 1967. All tunes were written by Morgan except for the romantic ballad “Ill Wind” as Lee plays his trumpet with a mute. My favorite tune of this session is “Ceora” which feels like a smooth bossa nova type tune with Herbie’s piano gliding over Higgins’ steady beat. This is an original I jumped at to replace my blue labeled UA copy that served me well for many years. I also have a @BlueNoteRecords Tone Poet Series reissue in my collection as well. Not sure if or when #BlueNoteRecords will reprint their sold-out Tone Poet’s, but if they do, I highly recommend this. “Lee Morgan: The Last Session” by the great #LeeMorgan is the last studio session by him that was released after his death on February 19, 1972, at the ripe young age of 33, shot and killed by his then common-law wife Helen at Slugs’ Saloon in New York City. It was recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Morgan trumpet, #GrachanMoncur on trombone, #BobbiHumphrey on flute, #BillyHarper on tenor, #HaroldMabern on piano, #ReggieWorkman on bass, #JymieMerritt on bass and #FreddieWatts on drums. Released in May of 1972 a couple months after his death, this double LP #BlueNoteRecords United Artist original ironically has no songs written by Lee. My favorite tune on this album is “In What Direction Are You Headed?” was written by the great Harold Mabern who I saw a couple years ago with the #EricAlexander Quartet at Blues Alley in Georgetown. To be honest I’m a liner notes guy who tries to read everything, but not a lot of thought was put in this overall makeup of the album cover. I’m guessing the great #ReidMiles was long gone when this design was approved. From Harold Mabern on electric piano and Jymie Merritt on electric bass this was Lee Morgan’s first attempt into Jazz Fusion, and you can tell by the direction of the music. It’s unfortunate that the brilliant and forward-thinking Morgan was cut down at such a young age, for as the music was changing, he would have adapted, as this final statement valiantly suggests. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife https://www.instagram.com/p/CT7xElkJtfa/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Adam’s Apple” by #WayneShorter was recorded on both February 3rd and 24th, 1966, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Shorter on tenor, #HerbieHancock on piano, #ReggieWorkman on bass and #JoeChambers on drums. This was Shorter’s tenth album as a leader that was released in October 1967. This is my favorite Shorter album. The two albums I’m featuring is a @BlueNoteRecords Liberty which is an original I purchased a few years ago at my local record store for only five dollars and the other is a @MusicMattersJazz SRX Series reissue I was lucky to get when it was released a couple years ago for $59 bucks. It was one of the twelve original SRX Series releases. My favorite tune of this session is “Footprints” which I favor over the version on #MilesDavis “Miles Smiles”. Not sure why I prefer this version, but Wayne’s solo is breathtakingly good. I also love the way Reggie Workman accompanies Wayne and Herbie. The Liberty copy was only five bucks for a reason. It was bad shape, and the album cover is kind of ripped to shreds. Not sure why someone would neglect a classic album like this. The SRX Series copy is like all the other SRX’s, OUTSTANDING! Outstanding in the album cover, the vinyl is super quiet and the photos inside the gatefold our astonishing. I would love to replace this Liberty copy with another Liberty or hopefully #BlueNoteRecords will include this classic in their next Classic Series releases. If you don’t have this in your collection I highly recommend it. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife #JazzPhotography #JazzPhoto #JazzArt #JazzLegend #JazzLife #MusicaJazz #JazzPictures #JazzMan https://www.instagram.com/p/CT5exWSpA7Z/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Somethin’ Else” by Julian #CannonballAdderley was recorded on March 9, 1958, at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey featuring Cannonball on alto, #MilesDavis on trumpet, #HankJones on piano, #SamJones on bass and #ArtBlakey on drums. It was Cannonball’s only recording on #BlueNoteRecords and Miles’ only time as a sideman after 1955. This session also happened during Cannonball’s membership in Miles’ first great Quintet. Since today would have been Cannonball’s 93rd birthday I thought about several albums in my collection I could showcase, but “Somethin’ Else” is the one I have multiple copies of and two different CD’s. My very first copy a blue labeled UA is no longer in my possession. My Japanese copy has been with me for over 40 years and my only copy until I purchased my 2-LP 45 RPM from #AnologueProductions a few years back which at the time was the best sounding version I had ever heard. Until last year when I was lucky to get one of the few #MusicMattersJazz SRX Series copies. By far the best sounding “Something Else” I have in my collection. I recently added the #BlueNoteRecords Classic Series version to my collection as well. Many will argue that this was Miles Davis’ session, but because of contract issues it was decided to be called Cannonball’s session. Indeed, Miles plays several of the first solos and he composed the title track and according to what I’ve read on the back cover liner notes he chose most of the material. No matter whose session it was this is a masterpiece. The session starts with my favorite “Autumn Leave” and Miles’ solo sets the tone, but Cannonball’s solo is probably one of the best solos ever. I’m a little bias because of my affection for Ball’s playing. Miles second solo is just as good as it makes you feel as though you are floating on air. Man, this piece is that good. The rest of the album is excellent as my SRX copy makes me feel like they are in my living room. #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan https://www.instagram.com/p/CT2lzNUp_rF/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Like Someone in Love” by #ArtBlakeyAndTheJazzMessengers was recorded on both August 7 and 14, 1960 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring #ArtBlakey on drums, #LeeMorgan on trumpet, #WayneShorter on tenor, #BobbyTimmons on piano and #JymieMerritt on bass. This album as great as it is was shelved and not released until August 1967 after The Messengers had stopped recording at #BlueNoteRecords. I’ve had this CD in my CD collection for some time but stumbled across this Liberty a few years ago in great shape and couldn’t pass it up. #MusicMattersJazz still has the 2-LP 45 RPM version on their website, but at $125 bucks I’m happy with this Liberty I have. This is an original stereo pressing that also has the “Rudy Van Gelder” stamp in the dead. My favorite tune from this session is the Lee Morgan composition “Johnny’s Blue”. The Morgan – Shorter combination is very strong in this piece as Morgan’s opening solo brings the heat as Shorter returns the fire in his following solo. The contrasting style of Bobby Timmons with his single-lines and chords rounds out this tune with the always explosive Art Blakey bringing it all together. Another favorite of mine is the tune “Noise in the Attic” which opens up Side 2. This piece like all the tunes on Side 2 were written by Wayne Shorter. With Art blasting away at the beginning sounds like he’s making a lot of noise in the attack. Side 2 also shows the writing ability of Wayne Shorter at such a young age. Pure genius. The album to me should have been released after the session and not shelved for 7 years. Do you have this gem in your collection? I’d probably stay away from the crazy price on the Music Matters Jazz website though. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife #JazzPhotography #JazzPhoto #JazzArt #JazzLegend #JazzLife #MusicaJazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CT2MbcEFEfC/?utm_medium=tumblr
