BLAST FROM THE PAST: National Public Radio's broadcast - Jymie Merritt: The Beat Goes Deep was a beautiful combination of documentary interviews and a performance by Merritt's band The Forerunners featuring Odean Pope. “Lee Morgan: The Last Session” by the great #LeeMorgan is the last studio session by him that was released after his death on February 19, 1972, at the ripe young age of 33, shot and killed by his then common-law wife Helen at Slugs’ Saloon in New York City. It was recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Morgan trumpet, #GrachanMoncur on trombone, #BobbiHumphrey on flute, #BillyHarper on tenor, #HaroldMabern on piano, #ReggieWorkman on bass, #JymieMerritt on bass and #FreddieWatts on drums. Released in May of 1972 a couple months after his death, this double LP #BlueNoteRecords United Artist original ironically has no songs written by Lee. My favorite tune on this album is “In What Direction Are You Headed?” was written by the great Harold Mabern who I saw a couple years ago with the #EricAlexander Quartet at Blues Alley in Georgetown. To be honest I’m a liner notes guy who tries to read everything, but not a lot of thought was put in this overall makeup of the album cover. I’m guessing the great #ReidMiles was long gone when this design was approved. From Harold Mabern on electric piano and Jymie Merritt on electric bass this was Lee Morgan’s first attempt into Jazz Fusion, and you can tell by the direction of the music. It’s unfortunate that the brilliant and forward-thinking Morgan was cut down at such a young age, for as the music was changing, he would have adapted, as this final statement valiantly suggests. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife https://www.instagram.com/p/CT7xElkJtfa/?utm_medium=tumblr

Blue Note to release Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers long lost album “Just Coolin’”
Tumblr media
Blue Note to release Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers long lost album “Just Coolin’”. The album was recorded on March 8, 1959, in Rudy Van Gelder’s living room studio. Just a few months after studio session to “Moanin’” Art Blakey’s classic hard-bop album. Blue Note founder and producer Alfred Lion recorded the band again at Birdland in New York on April 15, 1959, just five weeks after the “Just Coolin’” studio session. Those live recordings ended up replacing the studio versions. Blue Note released them as the two-volume live album “At the Jazz Corner of the World” in the same year. “Just Coolin’” includes two previously unreleased compositions, including “Quick Trick”, which you can listen below. Listen to Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers track “Quick Trick” from album “Just Coolin’”: Previous Art Blakey’s albums for Blue Note, including “Moanin’”, were recorded by the third incarnations of The Jazz Messengers. Line up with drummer Art Blakey, trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt. Golson left the band in 1959 after a European tour to be replaced, briefly, by Hank Mobley. Henry “Hank” Mobley was a founding member of the Jazz Messengers, who returned only for a short time. Mobley did not accompany the band to a Canadian jazz festival in 1959; Lee Morgan encountered Wayne Shorter at the festival, who became a fixture of the band until 1964. Listen to Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers track “Quick Trick” from the album “Just Coolin’”: Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers “Just Coolin’” tracklist: Side A Hipsippy Blues (Hank Mobley)Close Your Eyes (Bernice Petkere)Jimerick (unknown) Side B Quick Trick (Bobby Timmons)M&M (Hank Mobley)Just Coolin’ (Hank Mobley) Read the full article

Curtis Fuller ! "Soul Trombone" The Jazz Clan 1961年11月15,16,17日。Capitol Studios, NYC. https://www.instagram.com/p/B28kraKp-9N/?igshid=1fvu88n08mgzm

GREAT OFFERINGS: For those among us who love to peer behind the scenes into the lives of influential people and enjoy a good read, look no further than the book, "Whisper Not: The Autobiography of Benny Golson written by Philly Jazz legend himself and writer Jim Merod and published by Temple University Press. While exploring Golson's moving, personal journey in the music, this book also paints a beautifully vivid image of the golden age of Philadelphia Jazz and its remarkable community. In daily orbit with such Jazz giants as Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons, Jymie Merritt, Clifford Brown and Art Farmer, Philly-bred, saxophonist and composer, Benny Golson was much more than a witness to Jazz history. He was an architect of it was well.
