I’ve had this classic in my collection since the mid 70’s. My first version was a blue labeled UA I purchased at 3rd Street Jazz in Philly. My next version was purchased in Okinawa, Japan in 1981 which I still have in my collection today. My next version was purchased in the late 80’s and it was on CD. I replaced that with a RVG remaster I got at the now defunct Borders Book Store in 2005. This version in my hand is the latest from #musicmattersjazz and their SRX Series that are selling like hot cakes. They went on sale a couple weeks ago and are already sold out. #Jazz #LeeMorgan #ArtBlakey #BlueNoteRecords #BennyGolson #BobbyTimmons #3rdStreetJazz https://www.instagram.com/p/B8BeoSQHpfn/?igshid=1xm2hyvj9t1qf

One of the lesser known releases by Blue Note records in 1962 was this album recorded in France featuring drummer Kenny Clarke and pianist/composer Francy Boland. Together with six other European musicians laid down the tracks for “The Golden 8.” Pulling out my test pressing copy to give it a spin. What was originally released only in mono, here, on this Music Matters 33 reissue is now in full, glorious stereo. The music is wonderful and the sound is, as one expects from any Music Matters release, superb. Brass has that metallic bite, drums snap and cymbals shimmer, bass is deep and appropriately woody, and the horns have that reedy sound as air is blown into the mouthpiece. I can highly (very, very highly) recommend any Music Matters LP as the very best way to hear everything Blue Note captured on tape. This one is a don’t miss. #lp #jazz #music #musicmattersjazz #album #albumartwork #testpressing #record #recordcollection #recordcollector #audio #stereo #highend #audiophile #audiophilepressing #vinyl #vinylcollection https://www.instagram.com/p/BslGEusg3qA/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1dd8l5ox1gkku

Another day, another Music Matters 45 to brighten my Sunday morning. This time I picked the Clifford Jordon album “Cliff Craft.” With Joedon on tenor sax, Art Farmer on thrumpet, Sonny CLark on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums, you get a session of pure, unadulterated straight ahead jazz played by a group that knows their craft inside and out. The Program is split between side one, all Jordan originals, and side two with tunes by Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington and a Parker\Dizzy Gillespie number. This program really allows us to hear how good a group Jordan had gathered for this session. The playing is wonderful. The sound is, well, its aBlue Note at its finest, and Music Matters at the top of their game, so you know its going to be great. And it is. One can’t ask for more. A fine way to ease into my day. Most highly recommended. #lp #record #recordcollector #records #bluenoterecords #musicmattersjazz #jazz #music #stereo #analog #45rpm #album #albumcoverart #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylrecords #audio #highend #audiophile #audiophilepressing #audiophilerecords https://www.instagram.com/p/BuRQrebgDvE/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1umkrxsg6zi5

When I arrived in Okinawa in March of 1981 I learned a valuable lesson about record collecting. Take care of your records, so I put plastic covers on all my albums and replaced the paper sleeves with anti-static album sleeves. The album on the left was purchased in 1981 and the album on the right is a new #MusicMattersJazz SRX Series collection I got in the mail the other day. If you are just getting into vinyl collecting, learn how to take care of your investment. #Jazz #ArtBlakey https://www.instagram.com/p/B8E1JikHAeN/?igshid=1uzgjsjay7k12

Opening my Friday (the rest of the worlds Monday) by spinning this Music Matters 45 of Art Blakey And The Jazz Messengers album “Like Someone In Love.” Blakey, Jamie Merritt, Bobby Timmons, Wayne Shorter, and Lee Morgan - Blakey’s longest running itineration of his group. Usually players came and went, but in this case, I think they all recognized that the whole was greater than the sum of its parts and stayed together making album after album of brilliant jazz under the hands of Alfred Lion and Rudy Van Gelder. Musically this is superb. Sonically, nothing tops a Music Matters 45 for bringing out everything RVG captured on tape. These are starting to become harder to find, given they were limited editions, so if you’re interested in them at all I’d start looking now before prices skyrocket. Any Music Matters LP comes with my very highest recommendation. #LP #album #albumcover #record #recordcollection #analog #jazz #music #musicmattersjazz #audio #vinyl #vinylrecords #vinylcollector #audiophile #audiophilerecords #audiophilepressing #audiophiles (at Montpelier, Vermont)

“Speak Like a Child” by #HerbieHancok was recorded on March 6 and 9, 1968 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Herbie on piano, #RonCarter on bass, #MickeyRoker on drums, #JerryDodgion on alto flute, #PeterPhillips on bass trombone and #ThadJones on flugelhorn. When Herbie hit the studio in 1968 it was his first session as a leader in nearly three years as this was his last recording with #BlueNoteRocrds. His last session as a leader was “Maiden Voyage”. In the years between these two landmark recordings, Herbie was busy playing with #MilesDavis, Ron Carter, #WayneShorter and #TonyWilliams as part of Miles’ Second Great Quintet. If you read the liner notes Herbie explains his concept of putting this session together as it seems he was heavily influenced by the work of Gil Evans, Oliver Nelson and Thad Jones three heavy hitting arrangers who compose with large groups in mind. His note’s: "All the sounds in these pieces are a product of everything I've learned, particularly in recent work with Gil Evans, and, of course, in the five years I've been with Miles and the other men in the band. I feel I have to go on more and write for horns, explore more possibilities of textures. There are things I hear in my head that I don't often hear in other people's music, and I want to get more of those down. And I keep hearing new things and I have to find out what value they have, how they work out." The first time I heard this album I was intrigued by the makeup of his front line of alto flute, bass trombone and flugelhorn. I’ve always been a Herbie and Ron Carter fan and because “Riot” and “The Sorcerer” were part of this session I wanted to compare with the classics done with Miles on “Nefertiti” and “Sorcerer”. Although these versions were nice, I preferred the versions done with Miles. This is a Liberty pressing that I think you would enjoy. I wish I hadn’t missed out when it was available on the #MusicMattersJazz website, but if they ever get around to releasing anymore this may be the first album I buy. #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #3rdStreetJazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CUYwfJXsK_6/?utm_medium=tumblr

Today would have been the great #SamRivers 98th birthday, born on this day in 1923 in El Reno, Oklahoma, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 1947, where he studied at the Boston Conservatory. Up until a few years ago I didn’t own any vinyl recordings of Sam as a leader, only on CD where I have everything he’s done on #BlueNoteRecords and #Impulse from the 60’s and 70’s. I first heard Sam on “Miles in Tokyo” by #MilesDavis which I think was his tryout for the tenor spot for Miles “Second Great Quintet” which eventually went to #WayneShorter. A couple years ago I saw this 2-LP 45 RPM “Fuchsia Swing Song” still available on @MusicMattersJazz website and purchased it. The price at the time was still reasonable as well. This was Sam’s first session as a leader and was recorded on December 11, 1964, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Rivers on tenor, #JakiByrd on piano, #RonCarter on bass and #TonyWilliams on drums. This is my favorite Rivers album as Rivers explained the title “Fuchsia Swing Song” got its name from the brightness of the tune made him think of the bright purplish-red color of fuchsia. The CD of course has a few bonus tracks of alternate takes, but the final cuts on the album were the perfect selection. I’m not sure if #MusicMattersJazz still has any available copies of this classic, but hopefully Blue Note Records will include this in their Classic Series because I highly recommend this piece for your collection. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife #3rdStreetJazz #jazzrecord https://www.instagram.com/p/CUPtfvBAftw/?utm_medium=tumblr

On what would have been the great #JohnColtrane 95th birthday today, I tried to think of what album I would post today. As I drove around today, I listened to 6 different Trane albums loaded in my car’s jukebox. I thought about “Crescent”, but my current copy needs an upgrade, and I did buy one of those MCA reissues from 1997 that looks pretty, but I haven’t a chance to actually listen to it. I then thought about “Blue Train” and the fact that I have several different copies of that, and I settled with that. Recorded on September 15, 1957, at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey featuring Trane on tenor, #LeeMorgan on trumpet, #CurtisFuller on trombone, #KennyDrew on piano, #PaulChambers on bass and #PhillyJoeJones on drums. This is a #MusicMattersJazz SRX Series reissue that sounds flawless. As we all know this is Trane’s only #BlueNoteRecords recording as a leader. This session took place at the time Trane was working at the Five Spot as a member of the #TheloniousMonk Quartet and all the compositions with the exception of the standard “I’m Old Fashion” was written by Trane. My favorite piece on this album is the title track “Blue Train” which always gave me the feeling I was actually watching a train riding down this lonely track chugg’n away with the stream pouring out of it’s stack. In this piece a young Lee Morgan is making a statement with his solo that he’s gonna be a star in the near future. Curtis Fuller is my favorite trombonist and his playing on this album doesn’t alter my feeling about him. As with all the titles in the MMJ SRX series this is a very enjoyable listening experience every time, I put it on the turntable. It’s like they are playing right in my living room. So I want to say Happy Heavenly Birthday Blessings Trane! . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife @3rdStreetJazz #3rdStreetJazz #jazzrecord https://www.instagram.com/p/CULeqfqPkYD/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Somethin’ Else” by Julian #CannonballAdderley was recorded on March 9, 1958, at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey featuring Cannonball on alto, #MilesDavis on trumpet, #HankJones on piano, #SamJones on bass and #ArtBlakey on drums. It was Cannonball’s only recording on #BlueNoteRecords and Miles’ only time as a sideman after 1955. This session also happened during Cannonball’s membership in Miles’ first great Quintet. Since today would have been Cannonball’s 93rd birthday I thought about several albums in my collection I could showcase, but “Somethin’ Else” is the one I have multiple copies of and two different CD’s. My very first copy a blue labeled UA is no longer in my possession. My Japanese copy has been with me for over 40 years and my only copy until I purchased my 2-LP 45 RPM from #AnologueProductions a few years back which at the time was the best sounding version I had ever heard. Until last year when I was lucky to get one of the few #MusicMattersJazz SRX Series copies. By far the best sounding “Something Else” I have in my collection. I recently added the #BlueNoteRecords Classic Series version to my collection as well. Many will argue that this was Miles Davis’ session, but because of contract issues it was decided to be called Cannonball’s session. Indeed, Miles plays several of the first solos and he composed the title track and according to what I’ve read on the back cover liner notes he chose most of the material. No matter whose session it was this is a masterpiece. The session starts with my favorite “Autumn Leave” and Miles’ solo sets the tone, but Cannonball’s solo is probably one of the best solos ever. I’m a little bias because of my affection for Ball’s playing. Miles second solo is just as good as it makes you feel as though you are floating on air. Man, this piece is that good. The rest of the album is excellent as my SRX copy makes me feel like they are in my living room. #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan https://www.instagram.com/p/CT2lzNUp_rF/?utm_medium=tumblr

“Like Someone in Love” by #ArtBlakeyAndTheJazzMessengers was recorded on both August 7 and 14, 1960 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring #ArtBlakey on drums, #LeeMorgan on trumpet, #WayneShorter on tenor, #BobbyTimmons on piano and #JymieMerritt on bass. This album as great as it is was shelved and not released until August 1967 after The Messengers had stopped recording at #BlueNoteRecords. I’ve had this CD in my CD collection for some time but stumbled across this Liberty a few years ago in great shape and couldn’t pass it up. #MusicMattersJazz still has the 2-LP 45 RPM version on their website, but at $125 bucks I’m happy with this Liberty I have. This is an original stereo pressing that also has the “Rudy Van Gelder” stamp in the dead. My favorite tune from this session is the Lee Morgan composition “Johnny’s Blue”. The Morgan – Shorter combination is very strong in this piece as Morgan’s opening solo brings the heat as Shorter returns the fire in his following solo. The contrasting style of Bobby Timmons with his single-lines and chords rounds out this tune with the always explosive Art Blakey bringing it all together. Another favorite of mine is the tune “Noise in the Attic” which opens up Side 2. This piece like all the tunes on Side 2 were written by Wayne Shorter. With Art blasting away at the beginning sounds like he’s making a lot of noise in the attack. Side 2 also shows the writing ability of Wayne Shorter at such a young age. Pure genius. The album to me should have been released after the session and not shelved for 7 years. Do you have this gem in your collection? I’d probably stay away from the crazy price on the Music Matters Jazz website though. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife #JazzPhotography #JazzPhoto #JazzArt #JazzLegend #JazzLife #MusicaJazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CT2MbcEFEfC/?utm_medium=tumblr

“The Cape Verdean Blues” by the great #HoraceSilver was recorded on both October 1 and 22, 1965 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Horace on piano, #WoodyShaw on trumpet, #JoeHenderson on tenor, #BobCranshaw on bass, #RogerHumphries on drums and #JJJohnson on trombone. This is a #MusicMattersJazz 33 RPM reissue although I have a blue labeled UA copy as well. This is probably my favorite Horace Silver session Mainly because of my love for the tune “The African Queen”. As Horace stated in the liner notes, “’The African Queen’ was inspired by some African folk music which I was introduced to by my good friend Pierre Billon from the Ivory Coast, French West Africa.” This piece seems to make it on to a lot of my playlist these days. I think it’s Joe Henderson’s solo which transcends you into that feeling of him serenading an African Queen with honor with Lex Humphries accenting each note and then Woody Shaw’s solo just putting the icing on the cake. Such a beautiful song full of great solos. My second favorite piece of this session is the tune “Nutville” which Horace says, “because the harmonies in the tune and the voicing sound kinda nutty.” JJ Johnson’s opening solo followed by Woody Shaw’s do seem kinda nutty. Joe Henderson solo comes in kinda crazy, but an overall powerful tune which I love. This is no longer offered on the Music Matters Jazz website, but @BlueNoteRecords may be releasing this on their next set of Classic Series releases. Hopefully so, but if you can find a decent playing Liberty copy I’d jump on it. Have a BLESSED rest of the day. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #JazzAlbum #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #Jazz #jazzjunkie #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #CrateDigging #Vinyldigging #JazzRecordCollection #OnMyTurtable #MusicaJazz #JazzMan #JazzArt #JazzLife #bluenote #bluenoterecords #vintagebluenote #bluenotejazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CTzqdDPpnYI/?utm_medium=tumblr

When #BlueNoteRecords announced they were extending their 80th Anniversary Series and re-branding it’s name to “The Classic Series” I looked at the release lineup and saw “Idle Moments” by b#GrantGreen and “Midnight Blue” by #KennyBurrell were being released during the same week my thought was “Brilliant”. Even though I owned a regular #MusicMattersJazz and an SRX Series copy to go along with a Liberty I’ve had in my collection like forever I knew I was purchasing this Classic Series reissue on it’s release. The album was recorded on both November 4 and 15, 1963 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Green on guitar, #JoeHenderson on tenor, #DukePearson on piano, #BobbyHutcherson on vibes, #BobCranshaw on bass and #AlHarewood on drums. As Duke Person wrote in the liner notes that when he “Idle Moments” he envisioned it only lasting no more than the 7 minutes that was left to fill in the remain space of the album. Green’s opening chorus was supposed to be 16-bars, but once he began playing it he went well over the 16-bars. By the time they completed the take it 15 minutes, but it was a masterpiece that they couldn’t get rid of. So they decided to re-do “Django” and shorten it. The only issue I have with this reissue is like all the BN80’s and now the Classics is they come in covers that are made of cheap card stock and the paper sleeves the albums come in are even worst. The love they place in their “Tone Poet Series” and their lessor known titles should be given to these classics as well. I know they don’t want to step on the toes of Music Matters Jazz, but they are all but out of business and these titles deserve to be treated better that what they are getting. . . . . . #Jazzrecords #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #3rdStreetJazz #Jazz #bluenote #bluenoterecords #vintagebluenote #bluenotejazz #rudyvangelder https://www.instagram.com/p/CTa2xmKrAHA/?utm_medium=tumblr

What would have been the great #HoraceSilver 93rd birthday today, I am celebrating by listening to some of his classics that are in my collection. “The Stylings of Silver” was recorded on May 8, 1957 at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey featuring Silver on piano, #ArtFarmer on trumpet, #HankMobley on tenor, #LouisHayes on drums and #TeddyKotick on bass. This is a #MusicMattersJazz reissue cut from the original analog tapes mastered by the legendary #KevinGrey. All tunes were written by Horace except for “My One and Only Love”. In this session it shows how much Horace had grown as a writer, partly because he’s innocent of complacency. As he states, “I try to write in a lot of different grooves. I wrote a waltz for instance, that I’d like to do in the future as a piano solo. I get a kick out of doing different things, working in different veins. Another thing I’d like to do is really get down some more with some of the Latin beats like the samba. The album starts of with the up tempo “No Smokin’” that Horace describes as “a kind of up tempo minor piece that gives everybody a chance to stretch out. There are also some written interludes. I’d had the title in mind for quite a while. ‘Smoke’in slang means to cook, to wail. So that what it means.” The rest of the album is “Smoke’in” as well as the Farmer – Mobley combo was what intrigued me the most when I purchased this album many years ago. This Music Matters Jazz reissue doesn’t disappoint. If you don’t have this in your collection I advise you to grab one if you see it. Have a BLESSED rest of the evening and Happy Heavenly Birthday Blessings Horace! . . . . . #Jazzrecords #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #vinylcollector #vinyllove #igvinylclub #igjazzvinyl #BlueNoteRecords #JazzRecordCollector #JazzVinylCollector #VinylJazz #3rdStreetJazz #RudyVanGelder #BlueNoteJazz #Jazz #HBD https://www.instagram.com/p/CTVXA5jreQe/?utm_medium=tumblr

#JackieMclean classic album “Jackie’s Bag” had the pleasure being recorded at both Van Gelder Studios, the January 18, 1959, session was recorded in his Hackensack, New Jersey studio and the September 1, 1960, session was recorded at the Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey studio. Because of the two dates and gaps between them he has different personnel accompanying him which makes this entire session an all-star cast. Side 1 features McLean on alto, #DonaldByrd on trumpet, #SonnyClark on piano, #PaulChambers on bass and #PhillyJoeJones on drums consisted of three of Jackie’s compositions, “Quadrangle”, “Blues Inn” and “Fidel”. This side shows Jackie’s growth as a writer and shows more effectively than any of his previous compositions his ability to create something more than casual union-line frameworks. With the only common factor of the two sessions was the steady Paul Chambers. Jackie commented on the two different rhythm sections, “I sure had two wild rhythm sections—I wouldn’t name either one of them as my preference. Of course, we got a certain spark, a crackling feeling, with Philly Joe Jones back there, but A.T. (Art Taylor) did just as great a job in a different way. And it’s the same thing with the pianist.” Side 2 features McLean on alto, #BlueMitchell on trumpet, #TinaBrooks on tenor, #KennyDrew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and #ArtTaylor on drums and it consists of two of Jackie’s tunes, “Appointment in Ghana” and “A Ballad for Doll”, and a Tina Brooks composition “Isle of Java”. This side has a distinctly different personality from Side 1 being that you have a strong blowing front line of Jackie, Blue and Tina. This is a #MusicMattersJazz reissue with the beautiful tip-on gatefold jacket with the session pictures on the inside. Of course, the vinyl is quiet and #KevinGrey did his usual phenomenal job remastering it. Not sure if MMJ has any left in their inventory, but if #BlueNoteRecords decides to release this in their “Classic Series” I suggest you buy ASAP. If you do have this in your inventory what pressing do you have? Thanks for your support and have a BLESSED day. #Jazzrecords #classicjazz #jazzvinyl #jazzjunkie #jazz https://www.instagram.com/p/CTSV6XtLcca/?utm_medium=tumblr
