Hello! I saw M.A. is going to be played again in February! 🤩 Apparently there's going to be a new cast. What do you think about it? Do you think Furukawa won't play in it anymore? Are you goin to see it anyways?
【Related post: TOHO’s MA 2018 Introduction】
Tumblr media
Dear Anon,
I am glad you asked, thank you! Just this morning I had a passionate conversation about this announcement with a friend!
Yes indeed, the cast will be quite different! The two MAs remain the same, but most notably, Fersen and Duke of Orleans are changed. Tashiro Mario reprises his role as Fersen, but the double cast will be fulfilled by Kai Shouma (甲斐翔真), a fresh new adult of merely 22 years old with an even fresher filmography. The antagonist will be played by Uehara Rio (上原理生) and Onoda Ryunosuke (小野田龍之介), both more experienced actors with a solid stage history.
My opinion about the 2021 cast
The M.A.s
I am glad that Sonim (Margrid) and Sasamoto (Marie Antoinette) get to stay, because they were the axis of the musical. They are what was required to deliver the important nuance to the show. Without their level of deep character studies, the show would have become a simple ‘monarchy vs republic’ story, instead of a story of people. The greatest thing about the A-cast version of 2018 MA is that it never tries to ‘educate’ its audience; it simply wanted to tell a good story of people.
I have seen versions with such unsympathetic Antoinettes that just made me go: “yeah the revolutionaries should just get on with it”. Reversely, I have also seen such whimpering Antoinettes that they make me doubt she is the woman who wrote: “all the hatred of France has accumulated on me, may it also disappear along with me.” (Nakano 2012)
Margrid is also a somewhat tricky role; one misstep and this woman with her own principles, emotions and agenda will get reduced to ‘that mislead girl corrupted by external evil’. Without Sonim, it would easily have been a woman who was lead astray because she needed a worthy leader, but was then tragically deceived!!! Reversely, if the nuance had not been done so well by her, it would have been difficult to acknowledge the redemption attempt for such a viscous person in the end.
Of course Hanafusa and Kon also reprise their roles. I have only seen their performance once, but I have to say that neither left much of an impression on me the same way Sasamoto and Sonim did even during my first viewing. Perhaps Hanafusa and Kon will dramatically revamp their performances, perhaps they will not. Who knows. I have much hope for Kon especially; second time, second chance.
Kai Shouma - Fersen
I have not seen anything of Kai Shouma except glimpses of his Yagami Light, so it is very hard for me to judge him. From what I have seen, his voice is pretttty good. Not amazing, but pretty good nevertheless. His acting for Light was pretty solid though! I have not read any interviews from him, so I can’t tell how good Kai is at deep diving for characters. Fersen’s script is rather difficult to work with in my opinion, and so far except for Furukawa’s portrayal, I have not seen any rendition of Axel von Fersen that is more than just a tragic lover.
Tumblr media
Kai does have star power! But what type of star power he has will be what he’ll ultimately be tested for. The thing I noticed about Tashiro’s Fersen is that his tremendous star power ironically became his biggest impediment. He constantly threatened to steal all the spotlights, and even when literally in the background his dramatic body language just screamed “WITNESS MY BISHIE SPARKLES!” Co-acting with Hanafusa demanding style, he was not so much playing ‘with’ her as much as playing ‘against’ her.
Fersen’s role in MA is supposed to be in the background, and the ultimate test is whether he can stay in the background without disappearing, as well as catching enough attention without outshining the two leads. I’m not sure whether it was so much Furukawa who managed that task perfectly, or he who taught everyone that that is the only way this role can work. The star power I saw from Kai in Death Note was befitting of this memorable lead, and I hope this power is something this young man can command at free will.
The Duke d’Orleans
Uehara Rio
Uehara is one of the most powerful singers I have ever had the pleasure of seeing, and his style is energetic, bombastic and explosive. He would surely be a worthy lead antagonist in terms of star power.
Tumblr media
The previous d’Orleans Yoshihara Mitsuo is phenomenal, and I would be lying if I said I have no concerns whether anybody can ever fill his shoes. As explained in the post linked above, Yoshileans has managed to portray a villain who is the protagonist of his own story. D’Orleans’ script itself however, is quite limiting in the sense that it leaves very little wriggle room outside the ‘greedy throne usurper’ narrative. Yoshihara however, SOMEHOW managed to pull of what he did, anyway.
My impression of Uehara Rio is that he tends to take the most obvious trait of any character, and tune that up to 11. He has a natural flair that just sucks you into his memorable performance, but his flair does often threaten to swallow the character itself whole. In a spectacle-based production like ‘1789 - les amants de la bastille’ it is like icing on a cake. But in a nuance based production like MA, I fear he might become the icing on a broccoli quiche and end up being ‘the villain because the script says so’.
BUT! I have not seen anything of his d’Orleans yet, so I will give him a fair chance!
Onoda Ryunosuke
Tumblr media
I have seen NOTHING of Onoda yet, so I can’t judge whatsoever. But I know he is a veteran musical actor with a huge stage history. I am curious to see what he’ll make of this role too, but here too I admit again that I do have concerns about the giant shoes Yoshihara left behind.
[Why] I think Furukawa won’t reprise the role as Fersen
Dear Anon, you said “Do you think Furukawa won't play in it anymore?”, do you perhaps mean ‘why I think so? If you just meant it exactly as you typed, well, it’s confirmed that he won’t reprise the role, so... yeah ^_^;;
If you are a normal human being and therefore made a typo, then my answer is:
I THINK Furukawa is just too busy, and perhaps the schedule would clash with ‘Elisabeth 2020′s reopening? Perhaps? Potentially, maybe? Hypothetically? I don’t know.
Otherwise, it COULD be that Furukawa saw Yoshihara leave, and went: NAH. These two did build up an amazing friendship and chemistry, both having spent HOURS together discussing their roles. (This is just my own wild fantasy though, please don’t take me too seriously).
Am I going to the musical?
Right now I don’t think I am going to this musical for several personal reasons; but who knows how things will turn out in the end. I do have to say, I already have the DVD with my dream cast, and I feel like MA-wise, I have no thirsts that need quenching anymore.

Actor of the Day: Onoda Ryunosuke
Today’s Actor of the Day is Onoda Ryunosuke! Born July 12th, 1991 in Kanagawa prefecture, and has been active in entertainment since 2001. He was originally focused more on being a dancer professionally; however, getting cast in a musical early in his career opened his eyes to singing and acting. This change of heart has since been very successful. In 2011, he participated in the Sylvester Levai international singing contest and won a Levai singing award. He has also been in many, many musicals over the years. His biggest anime on stage roles to date include Kougaiji in Saiyuki Opera -Go to the West-, and Yagyuu Hiroshi in The Musical Prince of Tennis (as part of the Rikkai B cast, the alternate for Baba Toru). When he’s not on stage, Onoda Ryunosuke has very traditional interests: he is skilled in the tea ceremony and flower arranging, and loves to visit and tour shrines and temples!

Watch Kenshiro's Powerful Dance Performance for Fist of The North Star Musical
The official website for the forthcoming musical adaptation of Fist of The North Star, the post-apocalyptic martial arts manga written by Bronson and illustrated by Tetsuo Hara, has posted a 90-second special clip to introduce a powerful dance performance by Yusuke Onuki, who plays the lead role of Kenshiro.
The video is directed by Daiki Kamoshita, who has worked on music videos for many artists. With the music created by world-renowned composer Frank Wildhorn, it recreates the last scene of the musical's first act, where Kenshiro is struggling with sorrow and loneliness, trying to find a ray of light in the world of darkness. Onuki dances in a single spotlight with his well-trained body.
"Whether you're a fan of the original manga or not, you will definitely enjoy this musical!," Onuki spoke of the much-awaited musical adaptation of the internationally popular manga. "What is justice, what is fate, what is love...? It may seem like a story on a grand scale, but I hope many people will watch it because it is a story with a message that resonates with each of us in this day and age. If you don't watch it, you will definitely regret it! (laughs) We would appreciate your support!"

Ultra-violent post-apocalyptic anime 'Fist of the North Star' becoming a stage musical in Tokyo
TOKYO
What comes to mind when you think of a stage musical? Maybe a bunch of cats, singing about things they remember or some guy with half a mask and a way too possessive crush on a girl?
Well how about a bunch of muscle-bound martial artists punching each other until somebody’s head explodes?
Japan’s Horipro Stage theatrical production group has announced that it’s currently developing an adaptation of "Fist of the North Star," the 1980s anime/manga classic about martial artist Kenshiro wandering a post nuclear-war world and protecting the weak with his pressure point-targeting punches and kicks. Even by ‘80s anime standards, "Fist of the North Star" is shockingly violent, but Horipro is planning not only to turn it into a stage play, but a musical as well.
Playing the lead role as Kenshiro will be 32-year-old Yusuke Onuki, an experienced musical actor whose past roles include "Marry Poppins’" Bert and "Billy Elliot: The Musical’s" older Billy in their Japanese productions. Realizing that Kenshiro is of a beefier build than the typical musical male lead, Onuki has been working with a persona trainer since the start of the ear to build muscle and cut body fat. “Physically, this is going to be an extremely demanding production,” the Kanagawa Prefecture native says in regard to having to sing, dance, and fight on stage. At the same time, he’s looking forward to portraying one of Japan’s most recognized and popular pop culture characters. “'Fist of the North Star' is a series that has been loved by so many people for such a long time. I feel a lot of pressure, so I want to turn in a performance that people will be satisfied with.”
▼ Kenshiro (left) and Onuki (right)
Other cast members announced so far are Takuya Uehara and Kandai Ueda “double cast” as Kenshiro’s rival Shin, to use the Japanese stage term for two actors who play the same character in different performances.
Kanata Irei and Rio Uehara will alternate as Rei and Juza...
...and Kazuki Kato and Ryunosuke Onoda double cast as Toki, the only one of Kenshiro’s brothers without an unquenchable lust for power.
Pointedly, Raoh, Kenshiro’s greatest adversary, is listed in the cast of characters for the musical, but with no attached actor yet announced.
With 27 collected manga volumes and over 150 anime episodes, "Fist of the North Star" is a long series, and it’s unlikely the musical will adapt the entire saga. In describing the musical’s story, though, the play’s official website references the assassination of Kenshiro’s master Ryuken by Raoh and the kidnapping of his lover Yuria by Shin, so it’s a safe bet that the hero’s battles against those two antagonists will be covered to some extent.
On the production side, "Fist of the North Star-Hokuto no Ken" (the official title uses both the series’ English and Japanese names) is an international effort, with a Japanese director and playwright, Sachiko Ishimaru and Ako Takahashi, Chinese choreographer, Zhao Ming, and American composer, Frank Wildhorn. Wildhorn, who is coincidentally married to former Takarazuka actress Yoka Wao, also provided the music for "Death Note: The Musical," another Horipro Stage production.
Fist of the North Star-Hokuto no Ken will premiere at Tokyo’s Nissay Theatre this December, and the producers say it will also be performed in China sometime in 2022.

Tenimyu Challenge!
Tenimyu 30-day Challenge
1. How did you first come across TeniMyu?
It was back in late 2010/early 2011. I had just learned about the wonder that is tenipuri character songs and was browsing YouTube for more tenipuri material when I stumbled across a video of 1st season’s Do Your Best. I found it odd, to say the least, but the songs were very catchy and I recognized Shirotan from clips of the live action tenipuri movie so it got me curious. That led to more tenimyu videos, including clips from Imperial Match Hyoutei, Dream Live 3rd, and by the time I found a clip of the Rikkai’s medley on Dream Live 7th, I was completely hooked. (Massu is the PERFECT GODLY BAD ASS YUKIMURA.)
2. Talk about a performance/show that gave you a lot of feelings.
Oretachi no Aikotoba from Dream Live 6th. My precious 4th cast babies were all crying, some even admitted in their speeches that they didn’t want to stop playing their characters and leave tenimyu. how can I not cry
3. Favorite Seigaku cast? Who’s your favorite member?
I’M TORN BETWEEN 6TH CAST AND 8TH CAST. BUT.
I LOVE YOU, ZAIKI TAKUMA
4. What kinds of TeniMyu merchandise do you have?
So far I only have clear files of Seigaku 6th cast and Rokkaku from 2nd season’s Seigaku VS Rikkai. Looking to get my hands on that Seigaku VS Rikkai DVD soon mhmm
5. Favorite Shitenhoji cast member? Which cast do you prefer and why?
Shiraishi actors are all perfect
6. Which TeniMyu song would you cover?
I’m pretty sure I don’t have the vocal range to sing it correctly, but I’d love to sing Yudan Sezu ni Ikou in karaoke.
7. Shuffle your TeniMyu songs on your iTunes/music player. Choose the first five. What’s your opinion on them?
At the moment I only have 2nd season’s Seigaku VS Hyoutei, Seigaku VS Rikkai, and 3rd season’s Seigaku VS Hyoutei
Ranking (3rd SvH) - I don’t really like how it sounds like a hiphop song?? I tend to skip it when I’m listening to this playlist.
Oretachi wa Blizzard - I love this so much, especially Miura’s solo part. It’s such a catchy song.
Samurai - This one’s kinda meh, I’m not really that into it
Mirai e - I don’t know how to express my love for this grad song in words. It’s just. perfect.
Tomorrow for You & I (2nd SvH) - MY TEARS. I love this cast, and I especially love Wada Takuma, and you can hear his voice faltering and just crying and just BABY DON’T CRY
8. Favorite Dream Live?
Dream Live 7th, hands down. It’s the Dream Live that got me hooked. They have adlibs, my beloved Rikkai and Massu, my favorite Echizen, Shirotan, and even 1st cast.
9. A song you feel indifferent towards and a song you hate. Why did you choose these songs?
Idk its title, I just really don’t like the Burning song with Kabaji yelling “BAU!”
10. Favorite Rikkai cast and cast member. Why did you choose the ones you did?
Why do you do this THIS IS SO HARD. I wish I could include 3rd Rikkai here already because I heard they’re amazing, but the DVD isn’t out yet.
11. Do you actually stalk any TeniMyu actors (e.g. their twitters, blogs)?
Mostly just 3rd Rikkai’s Tateishi Toshiki for pictures of his dates with Shogo, Shogo for his cute selfies, and Takuma Isawa, my love, because he’s just so damn handsome and he tweets in Chinese (which I can’t speak but it’s still adorable  <3
12. What’s your opinion on the Rokkaku and Higa casts? Do you have a favorite moment or actor in them?
I can’t remember them much because it’s been years since I last watched 1st and 2nd season and they didn’t really leave much of an impression except for 2nd Saeki and Luke C.
It’s actually amazing because I hated Kite in the anime/manga, but Luke C. makes him impossible to hate.
2nd Saeki had a pretty voice and a pretty face. I can remember watching this Shounen boyband thing that he was in back then just for him.
13. Who plays the best Tezuka? The best Shiraishi? The best Ryoma? The best Fuji?
ZAIKI TAKUMA THE BEST.
He’s the Tezuka actor who looks the part the most, acts like Tezuka in the sense that he seems rather strict, and honestly, when he sings, he looks like how I’d imagine Tezuka would look like while singing. His movements are graceful and perfect, he always stays in character and keeps a straight face, and when he finally does smile, it’s just so beautiful I could melt. He’s a Tezuka to the core.
Sasaki Yoshihide is super graceful as Shiraishi and crazy fun backstage. Love him.
I only like Echizen (only in Tenimyu) thanks to his actors but most especially because of Takahashi Ryuuki’s performance in Final Match Rikkai 2nd
Furukawa Yuuta is probably my favorite Fuji. He has an amazing voice and beautiful dancing skills.
14. Favorite song and actor from any St. Rudolph cast.
2nd season’s Erabareshii Elite, was it? That was a beautiful song with beautiful choreography, and I absolutely LOVED Mizuki in that one (who doesn’t??)
15. Favorite song and actor from any Fudomine/Yamabuki cast.
3rd Yamabuki’s Sengoku has the most charming smile!! I love how he keeps winking.

I adore Miura Hiroki!!! Tiny ballet Atobe is the best Atobe

Echizen Ryoma, Kite Eishirou, Mizuki Hajime
19. A character you like in Prince of Tennis that was ruined by an actor’s portrayal of it in TeniMyu (could be from any cast).
idk... none for me
20. Top three favorite songs from TeniMyu.
why :(
I’d say Oretachi no Aikotoba, Do Your Best, Yudan Sezu ni Ikou
21. A cast you’d want to hang out with for a day.
???? 6th cast? 8th cast? Or 3rd Rikkai cast!!!
22. So far do you prefer the first season over the second season? Or is it a vice-versa kind of situation?
Although the production of second season had a huge step up in quality, I still prefer many of the first season songs and casts over the second season ones.
23. Favorite backstage moment.
any moment with crying babies
24. Favorite stage moment.
For a whole song performance, I can’t choose between the Atobe solo in 3rd Seigaku VS Rokkaku bc MIURA, but there’s also the 1st Petenshi daa nanto demo ie with the perfect Niou and Yagyuu.
For a single moment, I love the short part in between 神の子~DEAD END where Yukimura raises his racket and the Rikkai regulars surround him, kneel, and raise their rackets to him.
HAIL YUKIMURA SEIICHI OF TEAM RIKKAI, FIRST OF HIS NAME, CHILD OF GOD, KING OF CHAMPIONS, THIEF OF SENSES, MOTHER OF DEMONS, BREAKER OF TENNIS HOPES AND DREAMS
25. If you could see any past TeniMyu performance live and front-row, which one would it be? Would you change anything about it?
3rd Season Seigaku VS Hyoutei, and I’d like to change what happened at senshuuraku because it’s a very special day and I don’t want it to be ruined or dampened for Zaiki (and ofc I don’t want him to get hurt).
26. Somehow you manage to get a whole day to “date” your favorite TeniMyu actor. Who is it and which TeniMyu song would they serenade you with?
I
Love
Zaiki
Takuma
27. What was your favorite cast when you first started watching TeniMyu? What is it now?
1st season Finals Rikkai because Massu, Okki, and the old cast
at the moment it’s 8th cast because ... Zaiki
28. Honest opinion, who’s the worst singer of TeniMyu? The worst actor?
:( idk
29. The best singer of TeniMyu. What about the best actor?
Onoda Ryunosuke (Rikkai B’s Yagyuu) is Chris in Miss Saigon so ...
Best actor for my biased self is Zaiki because he is Tezuka
30. Who’s in your ideal Dream Live performance? What songs would they sing?
All Seigaku casts!!!! or all Rikkai casts or just 8th cast + 3rd season’s Hyoutei + 3rd Rikkai singing 1st cast songs and I want SanaYuki + TezuFuji or AtoTezu fanservice songs lol
