Remembering Tony Bennett, Carlin Glynn and Josephine Chaplin
What a day and it’s only mid-afternoon. Here is my combined tribute to three entertainers we lost today:
Remembering Tony Bennett 1926-2023
Tumblr media
Bennett and Paul McCartney
Legendary singer Tony Bennett has died at 96. It would take me all weekend to outline his achievements and accolades, but he had a career that spanned decades. In the 90s he made a comeback with MTV: he appeared on an episode of MTV Unplugged, got some MTV airplay, and at the VMAs goofing around with RHCP’s Anthony and Flea. In the years that followed he did duets with the likes of Bono, Sting, Elton John, Amy Winehouse and of course Lady Gaga.
He covered The Beatles and even did a duet with Paul McCartney. I also want to give a shout out to my friend and radio personality Cha-Chi Loprete who was good friends with Mr. Bennett. Thoughts go out to Cha-Chi and the Bennett family.
The link above is the obit from Hollywood Reporter.
Remembering Carlin Glynn 1940-2023
Tumblr media
Molly Ringwald and Carlin Glynn in Sixteen Candles
Actress Carlin Glynn has died at 83. She was a Tony winner and also the mother of actress Mary Stewart Masterson. My favorite movie role of hers was as the mother in Sixteen Candles. She also had a small part in the excellent Three Days of the Condor.
The link above is the obit from Variety.
Remembering Josephine Chaplin 1949-2023
Tumblr media
Charlie and Josephine Chaplin in 1971
Actress Josephine Chaplin has died at 74. She was the daughter of Charlie Chaplin and Oona O’Neill, which kind of makes her film royalty. She acted in numerous films and TV shows, including her father Charlie’s 1952 film Limelight and 1967 comedy A Countess from Hong Kong.

What was the name of Charlie Chaplin's fourth and final wife?
Tumblr media
Charlie Chaplin (1889-1977) met Oona O’Neill (1925-1991), the daughter of playwright Eugene O’Neill (1888-1953), seven months before their marriage. Despite their 36-year age gap, Chaplin described their meeting as the happiest day of his life. After three unsuccessful marriages, Chaplin had finally found “perfect” love, and the couple remained married until Chaplin’s death. They had eight children, the majority of whom became actors.
Chaplin and his entire family sailed to England on 18th September 1952, for the premiere of his film 'Limelight'. On their arrival, they discovered his re-entry permit had been revoked due to suspicions about his political views. To return to the USA, Chaplin would have to attend an interview about his views and behaviour. Although later evidence suggested there was no real reason to prevent Chaplin’s re-entry, Chaplin decided to stay in Europe, where he was warmly received.
Oona travelled to the USA to settle the family’s affairs, then returned to her husband, renounced her US citizenship and became a British citizen. In January 1953, Chaplin decided to relocate his family to Switzerland, where he purchased Manoir de Ban, a 35-acre estate overlooking Lake Geneva. The building is now the site of 'Chaplin’s World', a museum dedicated to the life and work of Charlie Chaplin.
Rising to fame in the silent film era, Charlie Chaplin became a worldwide icon for his performances in many films, particularly as the slapstick character, the Tramp.

[Gloria and Oona] both had wonderful minds, though utterly different. They both could have been anything, but more than making decisions about how they wanted their lives to go, their lives showed up. I think that is true of a whole generation of women.    Oona O'Neill was born with a broken heart. Knowing that, it was wonderful to make her laugh. When she laughed, she sounded like a very soft little bell ringing. Then, too, there was that marvelous bawdy side of her, which was funny and always accurate. In all the years of knowing each other we never once had an argument. I used to wonder why. I know, now, why. She could understand eight sides of every situation. She was two girls - the waif and the princess. Oona was brave. But she could not put an end to the deep mourning in which she lived until her death. Oona Chaplin died of a broken heart.   Gloria has made more choices than Oona or I. In a way, she has lived more. She has tried more. She has been interested in more. Gloria is very brave. She is even surviving the ultimate tragedy, the death of her son. She knows that while she cannot really survive it, she's healng that part of her that she can save for her other children. It is possible that she may lead a whole new life, be a whole different person, and start again. Oona could not do that. I don't know if I could. Gloria dares. We were really children when we met. We remained children. All those unlived years, those early years. We knew each other in the dark. We had an unbreakable tie: the desire and the need for the only thing we cared about — love. We gave that to each other. And now, one of us has died. The tie is still unbreakable. - CAROL MATTHAU, AMONG THE PORCUPINES

Sorry to hear of the passing of Josephine Hannah Chaplin (daughter of Charlie Chaplin) who passed July 13th 2023 at the age of 74.
Born in the U.S. 1949 the third of eight children to Charlie Chaplin and wife Oona, her maternal grandfather was Nobel Prize winning American playwright Eugene O'Neill. When she was three years old her father Charlie self-exiled to Switzerland. She made her film debut in father's film "Limelight" as well an appearance in "A Countess from Hong Kong".

love that people reblog that Orson Welles quote about Woody Allen to bolster their almost totally distinct disdain for Woody Allen, because the quote's included dig at Charlie Chaplin is almost certainly sour grapes over 17 year-old Oona O'Neill leaving Welles (10 years her senior) for Chaplin (36 years her senior)

In Switzerland, Michael [Jackson] had received an invitation to visit Oona Chaplin, the widow of his all-time film hero, Charlie Chaplin, whom Michael always referred to as "The Little Tramp."
Chaplin had died in 1977, and Michael wanted to bring flowers to his gravesite near her home in Vevey, Switzerland.
The Oona Chaplin Michael encountered was not what he expected from the famous widow. Her appearance shocked him. She came into her living room wearing tight-fitting clothes more suited to Tatum O'Neal or Brooke Shields. Her appearance was rather unkempt, and she wore too much makeup, as if trying to erase twenty years from her face.
She spoke of the "lonely years after Charlie died" and told Michael that The Little Tramp ended his life in a wheelchair. "I was his watchdog and nurse day and night, waiting on him hand and foot. He fired all the nurses I hired for him."
Oona joined Michael for the pilgrimage to Chaplin's graveside. She spoke with a certain pain about her previous life and how she'd been dominated by two powerful men, both her famous playwright father, Eugene O'Neill, and Chaplin, whom she'd married when she was just eighteen and he was fifty-four. "My father cut off communication with me when I married Charlie," she said.
She was surprised that Michael did not know who Eugene O'Neill was, but she patiently explained to him the significant role he'd played in the American theater.
Back at the Chaplin house, she led Michael to the bathroom, where she removed a bottle labeled "shampoo." Drinking it, she offered him the bottle. He declined. "It's not shampoo, it's liquor," she said. "My family hides my bottles from me, but I outsmart them."
Oona was living up to her reputation. Before meeting her, Michael had heard stories about her wandering the streets of Vevey at night in her bare feet, dressed in a nightgown. She'd shout obscenities to passersby. The tolerant policemen never arrested her, but drove her back to the safety of her home, where they would put her to bed.
Bizarrely, Michael wanted to know about the body-snatching that occurred in 1978, when two people stole her husband's coffin and held it for ransom, demanding 6000,000 Swiss francs. Eventually they were arrested, and Chaplin's body returned to Oona, who arranged for its second burial.
"Imagine what grave-robbers would ask for my body if they ever snatched it when I die," said Michael.
"They're not going to get my body," said Oona. "In my will I've demanded that my coffin be encased in a solid block of concrete two feet thick."
