Basil II was a field Emperor. While he to some extent had to play the role of being God's vice regent on Earth, he was not known to be especially pious or concerned with the Church, nor academics and philosophy. 3/4's of his reign was one of obsession and singular focus on governing his lands and commanding the armies. One could say to a fault, as he neglected his dynasty and never thought much about succession. After his death his weak brother would rule the Romans for three years, and upon his death his nieces would carry the dynasty a few more decades before their death, ending the Macedonian dynasty.

With the dynasty gone there was a great struggle for legitimacy enjoined with a false aura of invincibility for the Romans. This would culminate in the loss of Anatolia to the Seljuk Turks, the start of the Crusades, and the Komnenian restoration that only staved off the legitimacy crisis for a little under a hundred years.
