So what is the One Piece? I wonder if it isn't a reclamation of this idea. That people could go wherever they wanted. Except instead of draining the sea or something, maybe everyone gets the ability to breathe and swim underwater. Cause Big Moms experiments on Giant Children makes me wonder, what if minks and all these other species aren't native to the world but rather experiments set on it to see how they adapt? Maybe Ancient Kingdom experiments to counteract the rising ocean? And the Devil Fruits are a world government invention alongside sea kings and what not. To divide and keep people out of the sea and far away from each other. Maybe they have a reason for it like the Anti Spirals from TTGL did, but at the cost of freedom. Anyways that's just spitballing. But I do love that line about not questioning the morality of the two factions. It brings to mind that Rayliegh quote again about how the Strawhats might come to a different conclusion. All's that to say, somethings fucky...

Also also! Stussy is going to be really important! Idk if y'all remember but a while back(i dont have the energy to go find it rn) but there was a pretty tucked away panel/dialogue about how Vegapunk had created a clone of Bakkin and he basically argued for her value as a human life iirc. There is anguish and deep emotion there and Oda's lowkey given her a really unique focus.

i can't help but notice how much cleaner the art style has gotten ever since the eye surgery. he was worried about his eyesight hindering his work, and now he gets to consistently put out panels like this.

My favourite thing about Vegapunk's reveal about the Void Century is how it recontextualises a basic fundamental of One Piece's world. How many readers have ever wondered why the majority of the world's population live on relatively isolated islands? The whole plot consists of the Straw Hats travelling between islands with their vastly different cultures and climates. And now we know: it's because that's all the land left to inhabit after the sea levels rose. It's information worthy of the year-long wait to find out what happened in the Void Century.

one piece world living in a perpetual cold war checks out. the threat of nuclear weapons decimating the world while the rich rule from their conspicuously tall fortress, lording over 99% of the rest of the world, it’s almost assuredly so luffy (and maybe another alliance with other pirates and the revolutionary army) will be the ones to break apart the red line. the only thing scarier to the 1% is a united people realizing you, a poor person in foosha village, have more in common with a poor person from wano, than you do with the celestial dragons and their private military attack dogs. is for the people to unite together and say we’ve had enough. if we’re going down, you’re going down with us!
