Oh man... apparently there was a hidden easter egg message sent out in OPM mobile game.

Today on 29th of September 2022

Titled: "Latest News from the Hero Association"

In morse code.

And it reads:

"I am here to test my new weapon"

I have multiple questions. (morse code tablet here)

Who is here to test and what weapon?

Also anybody enlighten me if today's some kind of significant day across the globe or in japan? Like specific holiday or event or something? That may also be significant clue.

Genos just got a message from Hero association too, in the last chapter.

Is...Genos the new weapon? Of whom? Of Hero association or...some secret baddie?

Sure, at a glance it could just be Metal Knight foreshadowing too and him making an appearance, since him testing out weapons is basically his thing. I think he is slated to appear very soon if we follow WC and apparently he also appears in the trailers for the opm mobile game, but it may be also related to something else entirely.

But this is not something we really need to be told that he's gonna appear anyway is it? But some hidden subtext. People have read the WC and they've seen trailers.

Perhaps it's related to the very end of special Saitama mission in OPM Game: A hero nobody knows. Where player character gets tasked to retrieve the Runaway son of one of Association upper brass and the boy has left behind a crumpled note?

The Runaway boy leaves a note behind, but it's a coded message for the player character to decode (player character may mean us irl people btw).

Not unlike the morse code message people who play the mobile game received today.

The crumpled note, which Saitama and player character decode, reads: "By the riverside."

I have already put thoughts into this game and the easter egg and if it comes to fruition...oh boy we're in for some good shit.

Runaway Boy’s note: Please don’t be sad. I can look out for myself, so there’s no need to come looking for me. But enough bragging. Please just leave me alone, I’ve had enough. Saitama: “What even IS this?” Saitama: “Aha. code. Uses the first letter of each line. This kid’s a real piece of work huh?” Saitama: “Let’s see…"By the riverside.” Saitama: "Well to the river it is then. Sounds like the kid’s dying to be found.” Saitama: “Let’s get it over with. He must be at that attention-craving age.” Saitama: “But is this really a job for heroes? Who knew babysitting was in our job description.”

The riverside and dying to be found?

The Sanzu river.

Specifically, the riverbead of dead.

Similarly to the Sanzu-no-Kawa, there is also the Sai no Kawara (賽の河原, lit. "Riverbed of Death"), a boundary by which the souls of children who died too early cross over to the realm of the Dead, with the help of Jizō, a Kami/Bodhisattva who helps the souls of children who died too early to avoid the attentions of the Oni and of Shozuka-no-Baba and Datsueba.

I wonder what kind of animation Murata-sensei has been working on, hmm...

Not an omake, original animation but actually related to the storyline progression? Can I hope?

If these two are related...hell yea shits gonna do down. I'm excited and there's not even a chapter next week since Murata has been working on animation and volume 27 instead.

Somebody is coming around to test out their new weapon though.

I wonder if HA is going to put pressure onto Genos to make up for other S-rank heroes still being indisposed. He's a cyborg and he's one of the few people who wasn't affected by radiation.

HA wants a new final weapon now that Tatsumaki is also pretty hurt huh?

This might compel Genos to not think about his own or Saitama's needs if the Hero association needs him to make up for all the other S-rankers and work him to the bone. Or take some other drastic measures, such as maybe using an untested core to get more power faster...

I do wonder, if it makes Genos a weapon in more ways than one.

Well hi all you folks... Good to have you.

I'm officially a semi-finalist in the Goku Royale. Currently in 1 v1v1 match with some of my toughest opponents yet. I've got 10 pages and about 2 weeks to finish it. One of the requirements is that it takes place in a facsimile of your character's (or your opponent's) home world.

EY! So ever since the release of a mobile game of OPM here in my country, I've been playing it. The first event was a limited event of Boros but then I discovered that Garou's also a limited-time event, I IGNORED the other limited-time event like Boros, King, even the drop rate up of Tatsumaki and Child Emperor! Just so I can save up and get Garou! Definitely gonna main him once I got him. Gonna give Garou top-quality care once I got him! IF I got him. Gachas and drop rates can be a bitch.. ;-;

i love how you just dropped everything and made garou your top priority. 😭 i hope you get him anon!! 🤗

why does Garou have to be so expensive tho. you should just hack the game and get him for free 🌚

Animate Times recently conducted a survey for Furukawa Makoto’s 30th birthday (9/29), titled “Which Character that Represents Furukawa-san?”

Among popular options like Saitama from OPM, Achilles from Fate/Apocrypha, and Shirogane Miyuki from Kaguya-sama, some people voted for our Yuujin from Appmon, and surprisingly wrote their comments quite long.

and here are the comments from Yuujin’s voters under the cut:

Furukawa-san’s smooth acting as the protagonist (Haru)’s best friend with his sympathetic, cool, and straight forward personality who always helped Haru and his friends, really moved my heart.

However, when his “betrayal” was revealed in the last story arc, his tone changed 180 degrees and it gave me goosebumps.

He really sounded robotic and frightening.

I want everyone to watch Furukawa-san’s 180-degree change in acting, and of course, this anime’s story too. (20s years old, female)

This character is actually an AI, named Interpersonal Intelligence Gathering Mobile Humanoid Terminal, that was created to monitor the protagonist. But the way Furukawa-san changed over between “the protagonist’s best friend” and “Interpersonal Intelligence Gathering Mobile Humanoid Terminal” was really impressive.

Because his voice as the protagonist’s best friend was full of tenderness, the difference between the two characters when his true identity was revealed, really conveyed the feeling of despair.

But when he returned to his “best friend” personality, it also put your feeling back at ease.

I think this character was successfully presented that way, thanks to Furukawa-san’s acting ability.

As addition, his names came from the AI Eugene (Goostman)-kun, who passed the Turing test for the first time in history (many other characters’ names also came from AI-related reasons).

The anime where he appears is “Appmon”, which refers to (digital) monsters born from smartphone applications (smartphone app with artificial intelligence).

The idea of smartphone apps being resided by monsters with artificial intelligence, is really interesting theme in this modern era. But Oozora Yuujin as an AI, stands on a different place from the other Appmons. He also stands as a slightly different existence to the Last Boss AI, the one who has given birth to him.

I think this show is interesting, as it presents multiple viewpoints regarding Artificial Intelligence.

Supervised by Miyake Youichirou (AI games developer), this show started broadcasting from the end of 2016 until 2017, years which were regarded as the beginning of AI era. Even if we look at the anime now, when AI is a booming topic, our present era is still inferior to the anime’s setting. But it’s still a show that can make you ponder how we should coexist with Artificial Intelligence in the future.

As for his character song, there is a duet which really mirrors the characters’ story. Composed by Nanahoshi Orchestra, and presented by the collaboration of Furukawa-san’s sexy voice and cute voice of Shimamura Yuu-san, who portrayed his buddy Appmon―Offmon, it’s really a song worth to listen to.  (30s years old / Female)

There are two main reasons why I chose ”Oozora Yuujin” as the character that represents Furukawa-san.

(1) Just like how his character is portrayed as a “protagonist” type, the way  he speaks sounds reliable and gentle. (2) The way he changes over between Oozora Yuujin and YJ14, his other face, is simply fascinating.

About the first one:

Although Yuujin who is played by Furukawa-san is not the real protagonist of the show, he is regarded as a protagonist-like character and quite popular among his friends.

Even so, he’s not a leader type who can pull everyone together. In contrast, he’s calm, tender, yet passionate and isn’t afraid to put himself in danger for his friends.

I felt that Furukawa-san’s acting really exists to express those personalities of Yuujin through his voice acting.

He sounds gentle and caring when he speaks to his friends. But he can be brave and full of passion when confronting the enemies.

He expresses his feelings depending on whom he is talking to, but I think that the core of his character is being “gentle because of his feelings towards his friends”.

“For friends”. Because of that solid core of personality exists within Yuujin, he ends up being seen as a dependable character.

Next, about the second reason.

Even though there had been “signs” since the first episode, which more or less were foreshadowing “something” would happen to him in the future episodes, I was still very surprised at the time when the reveal episode was aired.

The fact that him being the best friend of the protagonist Haru, was actually just temporary identity, and his real identity was an artificial intelligence named YJ14 built to monitor Haru, was really shocking.

After revealing his true identity, he started to speak with a cold voice tone, saying that Yuujin who’s kind and caring for his friends was just a lie. He’s made to show us clearly that he really was not human and was an AI after all.

In a way, YJ14 and Yuujin that we knew seemed to be different personalities. But at the same time, Furukawa-san acted as if there were also some parts in them that were the same, and changed over between the two of them. His performance at that time was stunning.

For those reasons above, I decided to vote for Oozora Yuujin from Appmon among Furukawa-san’s other roles.

Yuujin who is portrayed by Furukawa-san, is actually an artificial intelligence and does not exist as a human being. But I as the audience still see him as a real, existing human with flesh and blood.

And because of that, I sometimes still get emotional with every word that Yuujin conveyed in the show.

Especially in the scene when Yuujin practically dies, I deeply empathize and want to cry every time I watch it.

He left his friends with such gentle words, even though he was about to disappear.

I love that Yuujin very much.

I think Yuujin, who is an AI, feels very much alive, because the VA gave him soul through his voice acting.

I’m really grateful that Furukawa-san was chosen to play him.

As for myself I voted for Tada Banri from Golden Time because he’s still my first “Furukawa Experience”. Nothing can beat that “my~ boy~friend~ Chu!” for me XD. But still, I’m with these people’s comments about Furukawa-san’s Yuujin.

Just in case anyone TOTALLY MISSED THIS LIKE I DID SOMEHOW, there's a OPM mobile game coming out September 16th (2019) called One Punch Man: Road to Hero

Its for iOS and android devices. It's a turn based card rpg that initially will cover events from season 1 of the anime, but season 2 will be added in a later update. The most exciting thing imo is that tt's going to feature over 50 characters?? Personally not my style of game butttttttt I'm going to die anyway probably.

EDIT: I forgot to mention but the original voice actors are reprising all of their roles for this as well which is actually pretty hype

Spring Anime 2019 Part 3: the doldrums

Spoilers: There’s going to be top tier shows in this season eventually.

Also spoilers: not today.

Araiya-san! Ore to Aitsu ga Onnayu de!

What: Anime schlub has to sub in for his father, who is a professional “girl washer”. He’s not supposed to go full lewd. He does.

❌ Unlike Nande Koko ni Sensei ga, this is actual porn. You just have to go looking for the full version, because the TV version is half as long (3:30) for some reason. I dunno, probably just a tight, moist timeslot.

❌ Well, it’s still Japanese porn so even uncensored you get mosaics all over the place, so maybe look for alternatives anyway.

❌❌ It’s porn, with all the writing, production and subtitle quality implications that brings.

Gunjou no Magmel

What: People explore the mythical continent Magmel in search for treasure and fame. A shounen protagonist watches them all die.

♎ This is based on a manhua, and you can tell by the typical tone problems. Everything about the characters is like an adventure shounen for the younger set, but it’s pretty violent and full of death.

❌ There’s nothing wrong with the above per se, but it doesn’t work. I would say it plays its hand too eagerly, so it comes across less of a subversion and more as just really juvenile.

❌ Beyond that incongruence, there doesn’t seem to be much to it. People walk into a meatgrinder while our protagonist is cool and sometimes slapsticky. Wow.

♎ It looks pretty okay, but there isn’t much effort or style to it. Hey, it’s not actually by some fly-by-night operation but by Pierrot, and they know a thing or two about (cheap, long-running) shounen.

❌ Well, they made a Chinese ripoff of Made in Abyss. I suggest you watch that instead. Or maybe Hunter x Hunter.

Isekai Quartet

What: The main characters of Re:Zero, Tanya the Evil, Konosuba and Overlord end up in a high school together.

❌❌ BUT IN A HIGH SCHOOL is only slightly less creatively bankrupt a concept than isekai itself, and only slightly less common as well.

❌ This doesn’t change my opinion that all of these shows aren’t very good. At least it reinforces my opinion that Re:Zero is the least bad and Overlord is possibly a bit better than it appears.

✅ The adaptation of the character designs to SD Flash animation is done well. In particular the Tanya characters looks better than in their own show and Ramrem are Nendoroids anyway.

❌ Going by the looks, this is building on the Re:Zero SD specials. Of course, the Re:Zero characters appear the least and Konosuba characters appear the most. It makes sense, because their bad comedy aligns best with the bad comedy of this show.

❌❌ I don’t think it’s funny and I have no love for any of the franchises/characters, which makes it a complete waste of time.

Namu Amida Butsu!

What: A bunch of bodhisattvas hang out in between fighting sins. You can’t spell “bodhisattva” without “bod”.

❌ This is very clearly an anime based on a mobile game where very pretty boys wear very elaborate clothes, so the character designs are eyesearingly garish as usual.

✅ Imagine my delight then when the first thing they do is to put them into frumpy tracksuits. That’s the single best joke I’ve ever seen in one of these. In fact, the whole episode is mostly based on fish-out-of-water comedy that’s not very unique but pretty funny when applied to these dreamboats.

✅ This looks a cut above the usual as well. About as good as Doga Kobo’s Touken Ranbu, which is the closest thing I can think of.

❌ The wild swing from cute boys doing cute things to fighting the bad mans is pretty clunky and it’s only going to get worse as a plot establishes itself.

❌ This is probably the best of these shows I’ve seen yet, but that doesn’t really mean all that much. A few decent jokes is not enough to carry something like this.

One Punch Man S2

What: The meme is back, baby. What, a second season opinion on this? Yeah, know that I think that OPM was fairly okay apart from the overreliance on its one joke.

✅ That one joke doesn’t even appear in this episode, which is the best thing they ever could have done. In fact, OPM S2 seems to hardly even be a comedy anymore. As someone who liked the setting more than the humor, I approve.

✅ I still like Saitama and Genos as characters as well. Plus, it never stops amusing me that One Punch Man is better at social commentary than MP100 and MHA combined, simply by virtue of being at least a little subtle about it.

❌ However, they replaced the joke with drama that wears out its welcome and a shitton of exposition. Neither of those are something I particularly want to see either.

♎ Of course the talk of the town is that this show moved from Madhouse to J.C. Staff and there has been a severe visual downgrade. Even though I will happily accept that downgrade in exchange for the show annoying me less, I can’t deny it’s there. I’d still say that it looks okay on its own merits, it’s only in comparison to the occasionally stellar looking original that it suffers.

♎ Since I’ve made it through S1, I’ll at least attempt to watch S2. It’s different but seems to work out to about as entertaining for now.

RobiHachi

What: Robby is a galactic gigolo and flies around with his straight man Hachi and a robot vacuum cleaner. Now that you say it, that does seem familiar.

❌ I had my problem with Space Dandy, but for all of its faults it was at least visually appealing. RobiHachi has the bare minimum of visuals and is so reliant on the banter between its leads that it might as well be an audio drama.

❌ Yeah, that banter. I don’t think it works at all. There is no wit and and barely any charm to it, which makes the whole thing extremely tedious. I checked the runtime when I felt like it was going way longer than the usual 24 minutes, and I found I was 8 minutes in.

❌ So the show does put an extraordinary amount of faith in the chemistry between its leads, to the point where there’s not much else (apart from the obligatory mecha parody that any sci fi comedy anime is required to have by law). 

♎ I kind of feel bad for this show because at least it feels like it’s going for something that might have potential. It’s just incapable of pulling it off in a manner that doesn’t bore me to tears.

Strike Witches - 501-butai Hasshin Shimasu!

What: OG Strike Witches, the baseline unimaginative 4koma comedy.

❌ I’ll just say that it’s baseline unimaginative 4koma comedy that fails (like most of these do) and move on to a more interesting topic:

❌❌ Which is the way this looks, i.e. shockingly bad. Barely animated skits can still look acceptable, but this is a barely animated version of something that looks like a 4th grader’s crayon attempt. And yes, I’m not expecting everything to look like glossy moeshit. I’m just expecting the comedy spinoff of glossy moeshit to do so.

❌ It’s Strike Witches. Without butts.

Yatogame-chan Kansatsu Nikki

What: 3:30 regional/tourism anime about Nagoya, which is apparently full of strangely-accented catgirls that confound Tokyoites.

✅ This looks cute. Strike Witches could have looked like this, you have no excuse.

❌ Do you think Japanese regional accents are funny? If not, I don’t think this show is for you.

❌ The humor is shrill and obnoxious, which puts a pretty hefty dent into the cuteness.
