OPM Webcomic Chapter 150 Raw

I'm really late but rereading the recent webcomic chapters reminded me how badly Genos's psyche is deteriorating

Like, Genos has stated THIS is how he thinks of himself SO MANY TIMES. That he’s ‘thrown away his human side’, is ‘a being whose only purpose in life is to fight' among other things really shows just how much he's beating himself up -- and he has been for a while, it's just recently it's probably been triggered by Dr. Kuseno's death.

And this panel is even more disturbing. He sees Boros and says he's a 'pathetic being whose only purpose in life is to fight.... just like me', and that boros (and therefore himself) is just a living being deprived of his will and operated as a weapon.

But the most disturbing thing is that he then he proceeds to try and PUT BOROS OUT OF HIS MISERY. Like, that's basically implying that Genos would put himself out of his misery as well if he could, and that he very well might -- after all, he's got a history of drastically trying to self-destruct or taking actions that may very well lead to self-destruction. He's a hero, yes, but sometimes he comes off as a little too eager to throw away his life in order to save lives, or just defeat a monster. But a large part of why he's still alive is because Saitama stops him.

Which brings me to the other thing that's deteriorating -- Genos and Saitama's relationship (though that could be seen coming from a mile away, honestly. All the little cracks in their relationship have been played off for laughs and gags up till now, but knowing ONE, a gag is always the surface of something more serious.)

Even Dr. Kuseno acknowledged directly that Saitama had a huge part in keeping Genos human, in control, and feeling like a normal teenager, and not self-destructing.

Saitama used to be the thing tethering him TO his humanity, but now that he's not even there for Genos, and Genos is mad at him, and Dr. Kuseno, the only person with sufficient emotional maturity to comfort Genos, is gone, what's left to keep him from absolutely losing it?

When I saw these two pages, I could at first see it being construed as: Genos's belief in the humanity and goodness in people allowed him to let Metal Knight to go unchecked, and then he also believed in Saitama's ability to stop him and save everyone if anything were to go awry, and that's what 'clouded his judgement'. But obviously that isn't how it's supposed to be construed. He's definitely mad at Saitama (my shipper heart went through the five stages of grief reading it)

Saitama can't save everyone, not even Dr. Kuseno. This is another example of the consequences of a gag rearing its ugly head now... his unconcerned nature was funny at first, but Genos now feels Saitama is to blame for the whole situation.

Even at this particular panel, which is pretty early on, it's like Saitama knows that Genos is mad at him and that his self-control may be slipping away, and either doesn't really know what to do or decides to give Genos space.

This is the second time across 2 different mediums that Saitama's tardiness and nonchalance caused someone important to him/the people around him to get killed (for the manga, Genos himself, and for the webcomic, Dr. Kuseno.)

Yet he STILL blames himself and goes back to thinking he's worthless and powerless and a shitty hero.

But there's no denying it, he's super mad. Saitama is no longer the perfect idol he looked up to. It used to be such a gag that Genos was willing to do anything for Saitama, and admired him to the point it was borderline obsessive, but the consequences are really showing now.

Buuuut, maybe this is all for the best. A question I avoided confronting was when Genos would finally blow up. For a relationship to be healthy, I think it definitely requires for the people in it to have arguments, disagreements, and work through them together. That's what constitutes a strong relationship with proper understanding and communication.

Aaand if it's one thing these two are bad at, it's communicating their needs and listening to each other imo. (Even Genos misunderstanding everything Saitama says for something suiting his own 'vision' of him is played off as a gag as well.)

It's just that the consequences of these issues are exaggerated by like x1000 and the fate of many people relies on the health of this relationship, and on Genos's psyche staying intact, so... uh, I hope it's all for the best?

If they both don't come out the other end holding hands and slowly mending then RIP Saigenos :(

Garou's "Crush"

I wanted to make this little meta as soon as I read Chapter 170. Long story short, I couldn't at the time, but I can now and apparently there's some discourse going on? IDK. There's a reason I generally avoid Twitter ￣へ￣

Anyways, here's my two cents about that time Murata tried to "no-homo" Garou and, in my opinion, ended up backfiring wonderfully. Keep in mind, this is coming from an asexual, so my understanding about sexuality and romantic attraction may be skewed.

So, let's digest this panel:

In it, Bang makes the valiant attempt to bond over what he thinks is a safe subject matter. Garou's a young man, right? And what do all teenage boys have in common? Their raging hormones and crushes, obviously. Only, Garou doesn't seem all to keen to discuss this particular topic. Blabbing about the rotten morality of so-called "heroes" to some random stranger? A-okay. Admitting he has a crush to his father figure? Atrocious.

In fact, look at the facial expressions Garou's making:

Dude is looking like he's gay straight up not having a good time. He looked shocked and anxious and uncomfortable (just look at that sweat). And, yeah, the phrase "if you twist my arm" can, and frequently is, taken to be more sarcastic than genuine, Garou isn't really someone known for masking his feelings all that well. His facial expressions are vast and he always shows his genuine feelings, whether they're shock or fury or fear. But he does give in and provide a name. And, honestly, his answer made everything clear to me. Like how Saitama knew Garou wasn't "Absolute Evil" despite all his bluster, I knew Garou wasn't Straight™ with this one answer.

Garou names a character. Not a real person, but a character from a show he, most likely, watched as a kid. This is like back in school when any gay kid in the closet would go "I'm not gay, I totally love Britney Spears", or maybe "No, yeah, I totally love boys, I've got a Jack Sparrow poster up in my room". You know the drill. Celebrities are a safe "crush" because they are unattainable, and you will never have to actually act on such a declaration. Fictional characters, by virtue of being -you know- NOT REAL offer even more separation. (And the reason I bring up the fictional character angle, is because Garou remembers her character from the show before her name, suggesting that he has more of an attachment to the character than the actress).

So now he's done it. He's declared a crush. He's answered the question. He's safe. Now what?

Subject Change.

The very first chance he gets, Garou shifts the topic immediately to something else. And look at that. The cockiness is back. The sweat is gone. I daresay, he looks ecstatic to be talking about literally anything other than a girl he supposedly likes.

Just look at his smile (ಥ ◡ ಥ)

And if that weren't enough. We are told exactly why Garou picked this character, this actress, of all the others at his disposal.

Okay. So, first off, that's sad. Like, major oofs here for Garou and his Mommy issues. Secondly, you mean to tell me that Garou likes this woman because she seems kind? Really? That's the main reason? Because, not to get too shippy on what is supposed to be a semi-serious sexuality analysis.........BUT, do you know who else is really kind? Someone who gives off major "familial" vibes? (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)

Hmmmm, I wonder if there's someone Garou's met who he's seen to be very kind and protective over his ward.

Some who, thematically, represents the strong familial love Garou has never had and, apparently, craves. Someone who is closer to his age and he might be able to relate to. Someone who, canonically, he operates on a similar wavelength with?

I dunno, just a thought ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyways, thanks for playing "no-homo" Murata, but I'm afraid I'm still sitting tight on this Batarou train. Maybe next time ;)

Webcomic page redraw, for fun. I was awestruck by how impactful it is, and I decided to somewhat redraw it in my style, sorta. More like added stuff I use, like motion blur and a 3D effect, to really feel it's moving, and the bots fill up the screen. It was fun.

I was wondering if I should draw it in Saitama's manga suit, but ultimately decided to leave that up to Murata. This is a wc redraw after all, so I made sure to stick true to form, including the webcomic canon that Saitama didn't get his outfit from a tailor friend, but rather just on an online party catalogue. The tailored hero outfit is strictly manga/anime canon. I tried my best drawing Blue's suit lmao, it's really difficult to dissect the finer details of ONE's rough style.

MAJOR ONE PUNCH MAN MANGA AND WEBCOMIC SPOILERS BELOW!!!!

I haven’t sorted my thoughts about the new chapter yet but I’ll prob post about it later, but for now I really want to highlight this major difference between manga and wc

Wc:

Here, Saitama stands in the desolate (unflooded) ruins of Z city, very alone and numb. He’s left to face the destruction of his home with a bitter, cold feeling. It’s one of the most serious moments in the wc for our unserious main character and it’s not fun, seeing him punished just for living in Z city. (Note—it’s assumed he leaves Genos to be picked up after this fight by Kuseno’s drones, or if he does pick up Genos himself then it’s not on screen.)

Now, I wanna juxtapose this with the cover art and final page of chapter 169–

In the manga, Saitama isn’t alone. He and Genos face this together after everything they’ve seen because they’re the only person each other can rely on right now. Another thing, unlike the wc—Saitama focuses on Genos needs first, saying he wants to get Genos fixed up first before they focus on the apartment, where in the wc he didn’t even tell Genos this, he just kinda poetically walked off. (Also, I find it really nice that Saitama is showing concern for Genos even though he forgot everything about Genos’ death and stuff, it’s like a little of his future self’s realization of how much Genos means to him is leaking through.) I mean, the fucking cover art has them painted in such hopeful sunset colors, literally facing the desolation together despite how overwhelming it is.

Not only is this change indicative of how manga Saitama is superior (yes I said it), but it further strengthens their already beautiful relationship (u can take that as ship or not, I see it both ways). It’s a really sweet cap off to the whole omfg-Genos-is-dead-I’m-losing-my-mind-gonna-literally-kill-everything scene.

Does this mean I think their reunion was well done? God no. I hate that Saitama forgot everything, that comes dangerously close to just making the whole thing have no point. I’m at least glad Genos remembers, but he can’t even explain it to Saitama bc it’s so confusing and convoluted (I don’t blame Saitama for being confused lol), and yes, I know Saitama will probably remember later on and it will be a huge relief for the audience while adding to his understanding of his care for Genos, but dammit! I just want them to have a sweet crying beautiful reunion!!! ONE WHY CANT YOU JUST GIVE US SAITAMA CRYING AND TELLING GENOS EVERYTHING???? WHY CANT GENOS BE TAKEN ABACK BY SAITAMA’S ABSOLUTE DEVESTATION AND WHY CANT THEY HAVE A TENDER HEART TO HEART ABOUT HOW THEY DONT WANNA LOSE EACH OTHER???? FUCK!!!!

Point is, I really love this change, it makes their duo even stronger from going through this together and it’s just loads more fun. Hope that was comprehensive LOL I ranted a lot.

The real fight is about to begin

I was joking/not joking to a couple of people that Genos's next job might be advocacy for cyborgs. The recent batch of webcomic chapters expand on things most chillingly.

In chapter 149, we see Mr. Fuzzy intending to create a world in which unmodified people will not be able to survive:

Earlier, in chapter 147, we see Machine God Eguro explain to Zombieman about a world in which people no longer have free will.

Horrific. This plan needs to fail completely and their cyborgized victims either freed or allowed to perish, depending on what's been done to them. That's no way for a person to live.

However, this world is also full of cyborgs who chose to modify their bodies. They're going to be caught up in the inevitable backlash: either they're going to be seen as victims or as one-time oppressors.

Once he gets done with hunting for Metal Knight and the Rampaging Cyborg, life is only going to get tougher for Genos. His next challenge is already taking form.

Something TV Tropes noted was that if you want your audiences to think a character evil, just make them a cyborg. It has been refreshingly not true in OPM, where it's been more accurately noted that body modification is something a person has to a) really be committed to and b) have the means to do it. The relative societal privilege enjoyed by cyborgs is going to be ended by some very greedy individuals who think that having much means deserving more.
