I read the new Elin Hildebrand book over the weekend (it comes out next month), and she had a character say,
"What's good with you and Lamont? Are you linking?"
and I cannot stop thinking about this woman who thinks 20 somethings talk like this. Who talks like this!!
Also I want to commend her on creating a character who is EXACTLY like every single nantucket character she's ever created, including only listening to yacht rock, but making her a ~~Lesbian~~. Like, not even ONE muna song in that playlist! I love it. I love this. Elin Hildebrand I know this is your last book but may you never stop writing 🙏🏻

What To Drink Now: Spectacular Sauvignon Blanc
Tumblr media
Cliff Lede Sauvignon Blanc on the patio of Poetry Inn
Gary and I drink a lot of Chardonnay, but in the summertime, when temperatures are soaring, and I am in search of a thirst-quenching white wine, I am a sucker for a well-made Sauvignon Blanc. From steely, grassy, sunshine filled options, to slightly more rounded, textured and lush selections, the international variety can please almost any…

Pioneer Napa Valley winemaker Jack Cakebread dies at 92
Pioneer Napa Valley winemaker Jack Cakebread dies at 92
“When we put out Sauvignon Blanc, everyone thought we were wrong,” Mr. Cakebread told the Boston Globe in 1984. what we would do if they didn’t sell. .” It was not a mistake. Along with Cakebread’s fruity yet balanced Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc became a signature wine, and it contributed to the varietal’s growing popularity among American wine consumers. Still, it took nearly two decades before…

#DrinkThisVine | This is the only #mondaymotivation that I need! Wine delivery from @cakebreadcellars 👏🏽🙌🏽 The smile on my face when this box arrived was priceless. Oh the JOY! I was introduced to Cakebread Cellars Sauvignon Blanc over 10 years ago and I’ve been a fan ever since. It’s exquisite, definitely my favorite 💚💛 ⁣ 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟖 𝐕𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬⁣ ⁣ The wine opens with vivid tropical aromas of white flowers, ripe melon, and sweet citrus. The citrus and tropical characters extend onto the palate with ripe guava and crisp pink grapefruit, balanced by bright acidity and accented by a flinty vein of minerality. This is a zesty wine that stands up well to shrimp, crab, grilled vegetables and is perfect for a cheese plate!⁣ 📚🍷⁣ .⁣ .⁣ #spinesvines #booksandwine #drinkthiswine #napavalley #cakebreadcellars #sauvignonblanc #californiawine #winedrinkers #winetime #quaranwine (at Washington D.C.) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_yOLplgqzu/?igshid=q0we54stxzzg

Days 7 & 8 - Cakebread Cellars
We experienced two full, crazy days at Cakebread Cellars. Beginning early in the morning, we met with Roy and Connor to visit the vineyards. They drove us up to Dancing Bear Ranch on Howell Mountain (story of the name to come later) to do some sampling. After handing us gloves and plastic baggies, we set off into the vines to sample different blocks of grapes. I sampled I-1 of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
Tumblr media
Heading back to the winery, we took our grape samples to the lab to be tested. We didn’t see the final results, but basically the grapes were no where near being ready to be harvested. We then had a quick lunch and they put us to work.
In the white wine side of the winery, we helped a cellar worker with inoculations, measuring the food for the yeast, tempering it with the wine and pumping it into the fermentation tanks. It was a very meticulous process, and I can see it becoming old really quickly.
Tumblr media
Moving over the red wine side, we helped sort some Pinot Noir grapes before they went on to be fermented. I found this to be the best part of the day; it was very relaxing but also had an element of speed and thrill. The day was not over there just yet. Brian, the head chef of the winery, met us back up on Dancing Bear Ranch, at the lodge for dinner with Dennis Cakebread, Chairman and Senior VP of Sales and Marketing.
Brian put us to work making the appetizers - crabcakes, deviled eggs with candied bacon, and whole fried squab. I called dibs on the crabcakes because they are one of my favorite foods and I am from Delaware, so we know our crabcakes. It was nice to make the appetizers and welcome and thank Dennis Cakebread for having and providing dinner with us.
Tumblr media
After the appetizers, we sat at the huge table overlooking the valley and the sunset. Our first course was shrimp and grits paired with 2014 Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay Reserve. The second course was St Louis style spareribs with kohlrabi and apple kale salad, and potato salad paired with 2013 Dancing Bear Ranch Cabernet. Lastly, our dessert course was a blueberry cornmeal pudding cake paired with 2016 Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc.
It was a casual, yet fantastic meal with Dennis Cakebread. We got to hear many of his stories, including how the name Dancing Bear Ranch came to be. Long story short, the “security” systems against the bears that would eat the grapes would shock them and they’d run away. They caught the bears on camera running away and it looked like they were dancing! Legend has it that a bear lives on the ranch, but no one has actually seen it.
Tumblr media
The second day with Cakebread was more of a field trip day. Brian met us at the hotel with a van and we started our early day at the Fremont Diner for breakfast. The van took us south to Petaluma and we arrived at Bellwether Farms, a small family owned farm. They welcomed us very warmly and immediately brought us into the process. They were separating the curds from the whey and the process was fast and the results were immediate! Within a few minutes, the cheese solidified with little moisture inside! Their aging room was also spectacular, as they just have rows and rows of delicious cheese aging and waiting for me to taste them! They said goodbye with their homemade yogurt and we were on our way!
Tumblr media
Next, we arrived at Point Reyes Farmstead in Marshall. They are known for their bleu cheeses, but as I am allergic to bleu, I did not participate in that portion of the tastings. After the extremely extensive tasting of their cheeses with the Cakebread wines, they gave us a tour of the facilities, and it was milking time! There were so many cows just waiting to be milked and they were so content with it.
Tumblr media
To finish the day, we stopped at Hog Island Oyster Company, which is located right on the waters of the Tomales Bay. We got a few dozen fresh oysters, popped open a bottle of Cakebread Sauvignon Blanc, and had a great time. I am not an oyster fan, but I am glad to say I tried a few with the house made mignonette and it was quite nice.

Breaker Wheated Bourbon 750ml
California- Vanilla, honey, a hint of molasses, dark chocolate and just a whiff of campfire smoke. Spicy cinnamon balanced by honey underneath with vanilla and a touch of molasses cookies. Wood, corn and lovely hot spices. Deep complex barrel notes with just a hint of corn mustiness.
LE GRAND COURTAGE NV BLANC DE BLANC BRUT 750ML
Perfect balance of fruit, acidity & sweetness. Lingers nicely with a bit of Meyer lemon, honeydew & a continuing apple finish. Great length, crisp and refreshing finish. The Blend: Chardonnay imparts depth and complexity for the overall balance while Chenin Blanc lends citrus and hints of honey for a creamy texture. Colombard’s higher acidity provides structure, length and a pleasant minerality that is supplemented by the Ugni Blanc’s fruit profile.
SCHRAMSBERG BLANC DE BLANCS 2012
“One of my favorite cuvées, and it’s their largest and most successful commercial cuvée, is their 2012 Blanc de Blancs. This is 100% Chardonnay, dry with about 15% barrel-fermented. This is a killer effort and it’s my go-to sparkling wine when I’m at restaurants since it’s always available at a fair price. The 2012 shows loads of orange blossom notes, crisp green apple notes, a touch of caramelized grapefruit in a gorgeously fresh, medium-bodied, concentrated and delicious sparkling wine with tiny, pinpoint bubbles and a long, zesty finish. The Davies family thinks this can last 20 years, but for most readers, they might prefer to drink it upon release and over the following 4-5 years. This was first made when the winery debuted its early sparkling wines in 1965.” – Wine Advocate, 92 pts.
CAKEBREAD 2013 CABERNET SAUVIGNON NAPA VALLEY
91 Pts. - James Suckling - "An attractive wine with blueberry, mineral and dark chocolate aromas and flavors. Medium to full body, silky tannins and a delicious finish." Robert Parker 90+ Pts. - The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon has beautiful crème de cassis fruit, excellent structure on the palate’s backside and represents a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot. Aged primarily in French oak, the wine is youthful and young, with the coiled, restrained character of many 2013s, but the concentration is impressive and the purity is there. Beautiful black and blue fruits are obvious, and the wine structured, delineated and vibrant. There is a reasonably good value as well. Give it another 6-12 months bottle age, and drink it over the following 12-15 years.
