Since Orion is a journalist in this AU there are a few instances where his newspaper articles and blog posts are shown, and my friend and I loving formatted all the sections to imitate websites and whatnot down to sharing buttons and comment sections. Def one of the most hilarious parts of the book imo, I love them sm. Thank you best friend [Name Redacted] for writing this book for me, I love it sooooo much! You *get* Orion like noone else ;w;

noriko being 24/7 horny was surprising. like wow all of the stuff i saw she did out of context was 100% equally horny in context as it was out of context. love that for her
i didnt think the 'andy + slavery' thing was handled as badly as everyone made it out to be when telling me about it. tho from the way it was talked about i had kind of figured the conflict between andy and nile re: slavery would be really racially charged (esp considering nile is a black american and would obvs have Thoughts on the subject in that regard) but like,, done in a cringey 'a-white-guy-obviously-wrote-it' kind of way? but it wasnt that. i mean. it makes sense that andy would be implicit in slavery through the years
i mean, like she says, is that not what people just did to each other in the aftermath of battles for thousands of years? and i really like how its pointed out that it was what she was raised with (in the beginning when you see her put shackles on that guy after the battle) but she also accepts responsibility for it and acknowledges that it was wrong and not just 'what people did'.

i like how from her expressions you can kind of tell baby andy knew it was off but she sets those feelings aside bc she felt angry. it explains how she felt but didnt make her out to be blameless in it. plus i mean. i dont know, the fact that andy was involved in a lot of morally shady stuff for 7000 years is not that wild for me. if you live that long youre just Going to be involved in some shit, and she didnt even have other immortals with her as positive community influences, she literally just did whatever the fuck she wanted for thousands of years

it was also extremely funny bc that was like 60% of their contribution to the whole comic, besides kidnapping copley. they came, they wrote some fanfic, they left. kings. at least in tog1 they had an excuse to be useless bc they got kidnapped

on that note imo copley was. weirdly enough, more interesting in fm than in tog1. to me at least. the fact that andy let him live and he was so haunted by what had happened that he came back and sought them out despite knowing they would likely kill him for it bc he wanted to not only make up for what hed done but also to tell them what theyd done for the world was admittedly more interesting than andy just kind of drafting him to the cause and him going 'okie'

the drowning sequence was cool
copley trying to talk to andy while she was like o_o at him was great
ive hit the picture limit but id seen that panel where nicky goes 'forgive me' as he kills a guy out of context and it was HILARIOUSLY anticlimactic for me to discover that there was literally no context to it. nicky just apologizes to random people he kills. i thought that guy was someone he knew or something. nope its just Some Guy that nicky didnt know from adam
nile's complaint that andy was especially brutal to the guys on the boat... i mean. . , how exactly does one kill a man with an axe and not be brutal about it?
it was funny how noriko kissed andy and the only people who seemed surprised by that were nile and also andy
nicky and joe's complete non-reaction to finding out noriko is alive And Evil Now is endlesly funny. they just left her on that boat and neither cared. i get book and nile not caring but joe and nicky knew her, and they just have 0 input on the subject of what to do with her

i dont know, i get why people didnt like the ending but its. .. . it makes more sense in the comicverse. bc the squad doesnt really. .. interact outside of jobs? i mean, think of the moon landing story in ttt. that was booker and joe and nicky doing a job and andy only showed up a for a couple minutes after it was done. or the brunch in the first issue of opening fire. the squad arent as tight in the comic, and andy often seems to do her own thing outside of work, so andy saying 'i dont want to do work anymore' and the squad being like 'alright bye then' makes more sense in this universe than the movie one
also i feel like greg was Trying to set up a thing where nile becomes the Leader of The Squad after andy dies but like. its not very well done since. . . i mean, nile hasnt spoken to booker since opening fire, (and she only knew him A Day). and shes known joe and nicky all that time, but there isnt really anything that indicates that they have any relationship at all, much less one that's grown. in all the comicverse the only time nile and nicky speak is in FM, and in that scene nicky tells nile about noriko. nile goes from someone who needs to be set aside to have background knowledge explained to her to being the Leader of the group with nothing in between. it kind of... comes out of nowhere.
on the other hand tho... i felt really bad for andy thru the whole thing. well, i always felt bad for andy, but in this one she seemed so miserable, especially since it really felt like none of the others actually.... cared about her. when noriko came back no one asked andy how she was doing (big question ik, but it wouldve showed they cared at least), nobody ever expressed any concern for her, no one even really seemed to want to be around her. in opening fire everyone was more distant than in the movie of course, but there were little moments where she would joke with joe, or nicky would try and comfort her, or stuff like that, but in FM it really felt like they just didnt really care about her. & in opening fire it felt a lot like andy's relationship with nile breathed some new life into her, but in FM it felt like all they did was argue. i get theyre not *as* close in the comics but it really felt like the only person who cared about andy at all was noriko (which was probably also how andy felt) but it just seemed to come out of nowhere. honestly i was reading and i was honestly agreeing with andy that she might just be better off if she did just die. opening fire, on the other hand, never make me feel that way
tho everyone made it sound like when the squad split up it was one of those cursed 'the found family leaves each other at the end of the journey' tropes. but guys i mean,,, this is the second installment out of three. that isnt the End. theyll come back in the third one and Dramatically Reunite to fight some baddies (probably those 'others' noriko mentioned). im guessing yitzhak fits into that too somehow.
anyways it wasnt That Bad but it made me kind of sad and the only Sweet Found Family vibes in it were when they saved booker. also they shouldve beefed up that nilemoose romance, it underwhelmed me. 6.5/10
i also ABSOLUTELY understand all of greg's comments about how you couldnt make FM directly into a movie, he always said that it had no plot and. i get it now. it really didnt have a plot sdfghjkl

Hi, anon! Thanks for the request. Sorry that it took me forever to fulfill (I thought I wasn’t going to ever get to the requests at the bottom of my inbox, but I looked back and thought I’d like to do some). Icon credit to mckindonalds!
It wasn’t an easy request for me to fulfill since I wasn’t sure what was appropriate for the reader to say or exactly how they felt about it, but this is kind of just a piece of comfort in each one. I hope you find something that you like in these imagines, although I’m unsure if this is what you were hoping for exactly. Hopefully, Maki isn’t too OOC because I didn’t make her very tsundere at all. Under the cut, since altogether it makes the post rather long.
Maki, Shuichi, & Rantaro x S/O with Exercise-Induced Anaphylaxis
Maki Harukawa
Maki rapped on the door politely. She had manners, unlike a certain someone she might name. After a short while, you came to the door. 
“Sorry,” you apologized. “I didn’t-”
“You didn’t want to move too fast in case you got sick,” she finishes for you. “I understand,” she says. Contrary to her cold demeanor, her dark red eyes softened around the edges as she looked at you, her beloved, and she came inside the house with the slightest of smiles playing at her lips. 
You lead her to your room, and the two of you sit on the floor and chat. At first, it was only idle chatter: what each of you’d been up to recently, and how the summer weather was treating you. But somehow, you end up saying the words, the feelings you had never wanted to reveal to her. 
“I hate this. I wish I could be normal,” you say spitefully before gasping and covering your mouth. You desperately tried to bite back the tears and stared at the floor heatedly. All the tears you’d been swallowing day after day, night after night, year after year. You could do it again. 
You felt a hand grab yours, and you looked to see Maki’s small but strong grasp on yours. You felt weaker than ever. 
“Hey. Look at me,” she says, and you do. Her eyes are filled with concern and a tinge of sadness. You chew on your lip softly. 
“Maki?” 
She grabs your other hand in hers, too, and somehow it only triggered more feelings you thought you’d left behind long ago. Feelings you buried never really went away; they marinated in the new feelings and warped, but they were still here. Feelings of shame, rage, and self-hatred. 
“Is it so bad to show your weakness to me?” Maki says quietly. “You know I was an assassin, and I’ve talked to you about all the ugly, terrible things I’ve done and seen. They’re not the same at all, but that’s my weakness, and I’ve shared it with you.” 
You tighten your hold on Maki’s hand slightly. Somehow, your hands fit together so perfectly. 
“I thought my weakness was obvious,” you said self-deprecatingly, throwing a wayside glance at yourself. Your body. 
She shakes her head firmly. Without letting go of your hands, she gets on her knees and shifts over closer to you, so that your bodies are almost touching. 
“I know you struggle with losing weight because of your condition,” she says. “But I hadn’t realized that you’d been suffering so much.” 
Maki sounded sorrowful. It was maybe the most emotion you’d ever felt from her, aside from when she had been talking about her time as an assassin or was pissed off by certain people. 
“...Are you disappointed?” you say. You didn’t want to hear the answer if it was yes, but you still asked anyway. 
“No. Never,” she replies, and she looks you right in the eye. “You’re just as strong as you’ve always been. But there’s no harm in sharing your worries and pains with me. I’m your partner. I’m supposed to be here for you, and I want to be here for you.” 
You attempt a weak smile. 
“Is it a part of the contract?” 
She sighs. 
“I’m serious, s/o.” 
“So am I,” you joke, and you feel the heaviness in your heart slowly dissolving. 
Maki presses her forehead to yours. 
The funny thing about being in a relationship with Maki was that she was so much more daring and affectionate than she would’ve been once her feelings were returned. She wasn’t as cold, per se, as she was before you two were together. 
“I love you, s/o.”
Your breath was whisked away by those words, and you froze. 
Maki squeezed your hands gently. “...s/o? Hey, are you not breathing or something?” 
Right. She was close enough to tell. 
You breathed in slowly. 
“Are you sure?” you say. But you know the answer. She wouldn’t say what she doesn’t mean. 
“I’m sure,” she laughs, and she kisses you sweetly. “You’re beautiful.” 
More words that would take away your breath. But you breathe normally this time. She was sweeter than any air you could ever take in, though. 
“I love you too, Maki. And for the record, I’m the ugly one in this relationship.” 
She pouts and draws away slightly, releasing your hands and putting her hands on your shoulders instead so she can look you in the face from the right distance. 
“That would be me,” she says. “You’re always smiling, and you have the most beautiful smile ever. Tell me if anyone says anything to oppose that, and I’ll punch them for you.” 
You chuckle. 
“Your services are always appreciated, but that’s alright. I can punch them myself,” you respond. “But fine. Neither of us is the ugly one. We can both be beautiful.” 
Maki nods in satisfaction. 
“We are both beautiful.” 
You can’t help giggling at her statement. It would sound so funny out of context. She leans in and tweaks your nose slightly. “And what are you laughing at, huh?” 
You bat at her hand. 
“Hey!” 
You fall into a fit of laughter with her, and the two of you lie on the ground, cheeks hurting from smiles and joy. Somehow, it was so easy to feel at ease around her. Even your most heavily guarded worries and pains seemed to sprout wings and fly away in her presence. 
“Thanks, Maki.” 
“What for?” she says and turns to look at you. Her serious expression makes your heart skip a beat, and you wet your lips nervously. Sometimes you still felt like you just had a crush on her instead of being in a real relationship with her. 
“Never mind that,” you reply, and you roll over and press a kiss to her lips. “I need to recharge.” 
She arches an eyebrow. 
“Oh? Well, now that you mention it, so do I.” 
You find yourself in her warm embrace and rather preoccupied for the rest of the day. 
Shuichi
“Shuichi?” 
The two of you were sitting on the couch and, up until that time, had been reading quietly in companionship with each other. He set his book down, probably sensing something in your tone. 
“Yes?” 
You weren’t looking at him, although he had now turned to look at you. Instead, you were poking at your round tummy. 
“Why am I like this?” 
He reached out and grabbed your hand, stopping you from poking yourself. You glanced at him, and his dirty gold eyes were serious. 
“Like what?” 
You sighed. 
“You know.” 
He shook his head stubbornly, looking irritated for once. 
“No, I don’t.” 
You struggled to take back your hand, but instead, he somehow made it so the two of you were holding hands snugly. 
“Ugh. Why do I look like this?” you complained and avoided eye contact with him. He was surprisingly persistent when it came to you saying things like this. 
He pulled you closer to him so that you were leaning on him, and let go of your hand only to wrap his arm around you. 
“You look like you. You look lovely.” 
You groaned. 
“But I don’t want to look like this. It’s because I can’t exercise that I’m like this.” 
“Do you think your true self lies elsewhere?” he asks. “Do you think this body isn’t you?” 
You pondered. 
“I don’t really know because I’ve pretty much always been like this. Of course, my body has changed since childhood, but...I’ve never lived without this.” 
There was contemplative silence for a while. Shuichi seemed to always compel you to think more about everything in his presence. 
“...I still love you either way. I know it’s hard, but I’m here for you,” he says solemnly. “I won’t let you just agonize over this alone. You’re my s/o, after all.” 
You turn your head to look at him, and you’re suddenly aware of how close in proximity the two of you are. 
“Is that a promise?” you say, one side of your lips quirking upwards. 
He leans in and boops your nose with his own.
“Always.” 
Rantaro
You were lying on the bed side-by-side with Rantaro, cuddling. He was gently petting your head, as he sometimes did, and you leaned into his touch. It was comfortable and soothing. It would be easy to fall asleep under these circumstances. You sighed. 
“Is something wrong?” he said, sounding slightly concerned. “I think that’s the fifth time you’ve sighed today.” 
“I...no, it’s nothing. I was just thinking.” 
He peered into your eyes curiously. 
“About what?” 
You sighed again. 
“About my condition. And how I wouldn’t look like this if I didn’t have it.” 
He didn’t say much for a moment, just continued to pet your head. Then, he responded. 
“Do you not like your appearance?” 
You bit your lip softly. 
“I wish I was thinner.” 
“And why is that?” 
You reached out and played with a lock of his wavy green hair. 
“Because...I would be more good-looking.” 
Rantaro was quiet for another few seconds, looking contemplative.
“Do you honestly think you would be more good-looking if you were thinner, or is that what society’s conditioned you into thinking? That thinner is more beautiful or handsome?” 
You were frustrated and looked away from those probing eyes. 
“Well, it’s not like it’s just that I wish I was thinner because I think I’m ugly. My condition isn’t exactly healthy.”
He stopped moving for a moment and then continued to pet your head. 
“You’re right, I’m sorry. Since we’d just been talking about your appearance at first… Well, it’s not an excuse. Aside from your condition causing health issues, I still think you’re as good-looking as good-looking gets, though.” He smiles in that casual, carefree way of his, and you can’t help but forgive him. 
“Alright, alright. Your opinion is the only one that matters, huh?” You arch an eyebrow and smirk at him. “Pretty boy.” 
He raised his hands in defense. 
“Hey, I was born this way.” 
You rolled your eyes and lightly punched him on the shoulder. 
“You were born this way, but you dress this way on purpose.” 
“Ouch,” he grins. “But true. And yes, for the record, my opinion is the only one that matters. At least, when it comes to you. ‘Cause I love you, and I’m blessed to have you in my life.” 
You freeze for a moment and then grinned back at him. 
“I love you too, Rantaro. And I’m lucky to be loved by you.” 
He pulls you into his embrace and affectionately smooches you on your forehead. 
“Ditto.”

oh god. seeing the first page just reminded me of how horribly confused i was for this whole little arc the first time i read it. i was like ok, who are all these new characters, and also why does everyone look so similar
anyways now i now what's going on. i love first aid
love the running continuity of rung being the literal only psychologist on cybertron (except for fr*id but that's later). no wonder everyone's fucked up they all have to share a single therapist

and that wraps up the delphi arc! our first true ‘arc’ of mtmte, and a fantastic one at that. short and snappy and fresh, with some very clever writing and cool new characters, and a lot of great plot threads to be picked up later. plus, we got to see the beginnings of drift and ratchet’s whole thing (and ratchet and pharmas whole thing). and the lost light gets some much needed extra medical staff, so everyone wins! 
well, we’ll see how fort max feels about this all pretty soon.....

Queen Album Review: Queen II (1974)
Just a heads up that i wrote this on the anniversary of this album so it feels appropriate.💕
Title: Nope. Strong Nope. I gave them a free pass for their first album being self titled however this is unacceptable. You’re not Led Zeppelin. 1/10
Album Cover: To juxtapose my previous statement, yes. Strong Yes. This is incredibly stylised and has become on of the iconic images of the bad. Its simplistic but powerful. I also love that its inspired by that Marlene Dietrich photoshoot because she’s stunning and so are they because I think it demonstrates how they were influenced by their surroundings in every element of their art, not just musically but also in terms of the visual image they portrayed. More on that later (see: News Of The World) 10/10

Procession: A nice instrumental, its short and sweet but still a powerful piece of music, I have to say its not one that I listen to when i’m not listening to this album, however it definitely deserves its dues as a nice piece of music. 6/10
Father to Son: The intro is great! Procession bleeds effortlessly into the introduction and it sounds almost as if its one piece of music. I really enjoy the feel of this song, to me it feels quite warm for the first minute or so but I also really enjoy the change of tempo. I think the latter half of the song but I’m usually more inclined towards the rock sections of their more complex songs. The outro is slightly too long for my liking but thats neither here nor there.7/10
White Queen (As It Began): This songs just great, its one of those songs that is lyrically as strong as it is musically. I think theres such a good balance of adding those rock elements we see so often in the gentler Queen songs but not overdoing it. 9.5/10
Some Day One Day: I love Brians voice. This is one of my favourite songs in which Brian takes lead, along with some others that you could probably guess. It’s well placed in the album as its yet another example of Queens lighter songs. 8/10
The Loser in the End: Right. Here we go. I love Rogers voice in this (shock horror) and the arrangement isn’t terrible, its not particularly complex but then a good song doesn't necessarily have to be. However, whilst I do like the song I’d be lying if I didn't say the only reason I like it is Rog’s voice. The lyrics aren’t great and it feels like its missing something to me, its definitely my least favourite song from Roger. 5/10
Ogre Battle: So this is the first song on the second side of the LP, and I think it marks a change in tone which is maintained until Funny How Love Is. Sorry to be predicable but I love this one too. I adore the opening line and I’m a sucker for the fantasy inspired songs from Queens early albums. I think the song is arranged really nicely, its not too heavy and there are some moments when you're not getting an onslaught of drums and Roger’s (beautiful) falsetto which offer a bit of relief before you're taken back into the theme of the song. Theres a lot going on but I think its great. 9/10
The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke: This song has a very individual sound and its great, I can’t help but love this one too, singing what a bloody liar always gives me so much joy and I couldn’t tell you why but I love it. I love the sound of Roger’s falsetto underneath Freddie singing the body of the song. 8/10
Nevermore: I really do love how Queen create these cyclical pieces that flow into each other, on top of that this is really just a beautiful song to listen to, its only a little under a minute and a half but its certainly a welcome addition to the end of Master-Stroke and to the album as a whole. 8.5/10
The March Of The Black Queen: One of my favourite Queen songs and my favourite on this album, Its fantastic, honestly I could just gush about  what I love about this song for hours but when it comes down it its its just so cleverly constructed, I love the lyrics and you can really see how they were getting creative with layering and the bouncing the sound around from the left and right. Also Roger’s line is fab, that last 2 minutes is my favourite. 10/10 
Funny How Love Is: Not a song I think much of to be honest, another one I dont really listen to out of the context of the album, it kind of bothers me how Freddie’s voice sounds quiet under the instrumental elements but on the whole its a nice enough song I just dont really connect with it. Personally I feel like See What A Fool I’ve Been would’ve been a nicer fit here. 5/10
Seven Seas of Rhye: Another song that demonstrates how Queen were not afraid to be different and how it often paid off, such as in the case of this song - their first major UK hit. Another one of my favourites sitting only slightly bellow March Of The Black Queen 10/10

Janelle Mones new album Dirty Computer features the acclaimed singer-songwriter at her most revealing and freewheeling.
The 32-year-old star is one of the most respected in music, and shes won raves and challenged listeners with an ambitious blend of funk, pop, rock, soul, and hip-hop that has often made her hard to define. But being pinned down has never been Mones styleand on Dirty Computer she lets her freak flag fly.
Mone has admitted that her early android persona and conceptual The Metropolis and ArchAndroid projects were sometimes driven by the need to protect herself from judgment. As Mone has evolved as an artist, shes come into her own creatively and as a womanand now seems fully in command of her art and emboldened by living in her truth. Like virtually every full-length release in her genre-bending discography, Mones Dirty Computer is a conceptual affair: In the accompanying short film, shes Jane 57821, a nonconformist in the near future who needs to be cleaned by the powers-that-be. Shes a rebel in love with her community and in love with Zen (Tessa Thompson)and shes fighting to be herself.
Arriving a whopping five years after 2013s The Electric Lady, the new album finds Mone simultaneously at her most musically accessible and her most forthcoming lyrically. It feels like shes the most free on record that shes ever been. Not that Mone has ever seemed constrained, exactlybut her work has always seemed to put the concept ahead of emotional nakedness. On Dirty Computer, the concept is driven by her introspection, not the other way around. This is the strongest set of pop songs that Mone has released, as she dances between sunshine synth-pop, dance-driven funk jams, and lush soul. Working alongside longtime collaborators like Deep Cotton and Roman GianArthur, Mone isnt in altogether unfamiliar territory musically, but she is breaking bold new ground in terms of themes, and shes putting them across in more engaging ways than she has before.
It sounds like an anthem for youthful brazenness and epic summer nights; it also sounds like a spiritual manifesto.
The album opens with the Brian Wilson-assisted title track, with Wilsons trademark only-but-him harmonies providing a warm bed on which Mones warm lead vocal coos, I love you in space and time, with sparsely skittering production. With its twinkling chords and cascading drums, Crazy Classic Life channels 80s synth sounds a la Depeche Mode as Mone outlines her version of freedom: I am not Americas nightmareI am the American cool. She wants a crazy classic life, and shes perfectly OK with however it ends as long as shes done it all. It sounds like an anthem for youthful brazenness and epic summer nights; it also sounds like a spiritual manifesto. The synth vibes remain on Take A Byte, and its a pure party: The thumping groove and handclaps are dance-floor-perfect, as Mone sings, Dress me upI like it better when we both pretend, in one of the most effectively sensual and slinky moments on Dirty Computer.
Princes influence looms large on Dirty Computer, an album that owes a lot to his most personally affirming dance anthems like Uptown and Erotic City. The guitar-driven Screwed even opens with a rhythm-guitar lick thats a clear nod to his 1986 classic Kiss, but presented in a completely different musical context. Sex, bodywere gonna crash your party, sounds like the best kind of warning, as Mone provides yet another song that sounds like it was made for the best weekend youve ever had.
This is a fucking fun album.
Django Jane debuted online back in February, with Mone trying on trap and showing that her creativity sits comfortably at virtually any stylistic table. Sassy, classyKool-Aid with the kale, Janelle raps confidentlyand with more panache than most others who regularly trade in the format. Remember when they said I looked to mannish? she pointedly recalls, reminding everyone that during her ArchAndroid days she wasnt always the beloved pop culture icon she is today. She deftly addresses gender, race, and her own still-growing legacy as an artistperfectly seguing into Pynk, the other previously released single that had fans salivating in early April.
The double entendre of the title/hookand the cheekily clever music videois sort of a second affirmation of Django Jane. The color pink serves as a metaphor for both the universality of human existence and the specificity of womanhood. When the surging guitar and Some like that! hook kick in, its clear that Mone knew she had another anthem here.

Prince collaborated with Mone directly and Make Me Feel is an appropriate tribute, homage, and confirmation that no mainstream artist embodies His Royal Badness most provocative, singularly focused creativity as much as Janelle Mone. That groove burns itself into your brain within seconds, when that all-too-distinctive rhythm guitar begins punching holes in the pace, as Janelle ad-libs a joyful screechit sounds like an old friend making a welcome appearance at this Mone-led party. Prince lives. Pharrell shows up for I Got the Juice, as Mone flaunts and taunts a bitover African rhythms and a percolating beat.
I Like That is the most atmospheric moment on Dirty Computer, a gorgeous melody carried on a wave of synth strings, as Mone sings, A little crazy, little sexy, little cool / Little rough around the edges but I keep it smooth / Im always left of center and thats right where I belong / Im the random minor note you hear in major songs. She drops a brief rhyme about a childhood crush who rated me a 6 after she cut her perm, but makes it clear that she always knew I was the shit. And she goes for 90s neo-soul vibes on Dont Judge Me, a song that addresses personal insecurity and the fear that comes from wanting to open and be your real self around the person who makes you feel the most loved but also the most scared: Even though you tell me you love meIm afraid that you just love my disguise.
That element of fear is revisited on So Afraid, a somber, guitar-driven tune that somewhat recalls the 60s vibes of the title track. Theres so much to be gained by running toward love, but Janelle Mone expresses the doubt and apprehension of emotional connections beautifully here. And she parodies the jingoism and paranoia that defines so much of the good ol US of A on the rollicking album closer Americana. Once again playfully tapping into her Prince-ish tendencies, Mone offers a nod to the foot-stomping raucousness of Lets Go Crazy, while taking aim at everything from traditional gender roles to xenophobia to generic Americana. Its an upbeat end to an album full of joy and freedom, and it offers its best line: I wonder if you were blind, would it help you make a better decision.
Janelle Mone has been one of the most era-defining artists of the past 10 years, and shes done it without the kind of all-world hit singles that seem to define pop culture status. Shes managed to carve a niche in contemporary music that is uniquely her own, and here shes created the kind of album that gives voice to the creative, proudly outside-the-box individuals that have fueled so much of the cultural and social change of the times. The android Cindi Mayweather gave Mone a persona on which to explore her boldest ideas, but in putting who she is front-and-center, Mone has delivered her most relatable work to date. And it couldnt come at a better time. Black women have been leading a cultural charge, and Mone sits alongside so many of the boldest women of her generation. With Dirty Computer, shes given us a stellar pro-woman, pro-LGBTQ, party like its 1999, middle-finger-to-the-status-quo dance record.
There has beenand will continue to bea lot written about Mones coming out in the latest issue of Rolling Stone and how this album is reflective of her desire to be her. She said in the interview: Being a queer black woman in America someone who has been in relationships with both men and womenI consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker. Mone has long been an inspiration to anyone who dared to be themselves, and her latest art documents an important moment in her journey as a creator and as an individual. Its exciting to witness her come into her own.
And it sounds like shes having a blast.

The Do’s and Don’t’s of Facebook Marketing
It’s definitely not news that Facebook is a key platform for marketing your business online, but with over 2 billion users logging on each day and an endless amount of content vying for users’ attention, it can seem like it’s not worth joining in the race. However, don’t be put off. Success on Facebook requires focus and a strategic approach – but it is possible!
To make it easier, I’ve outlined some basic do’s and dont’s of Facebook marketing.
You might know them, but do you follow them?
Whether you’re just getting started, or you’re in need of a Facebook ‘refresh’, hopefully these tips help you to give your Facebook marketing a little boost!
 DO: Define your goals
Before you even think about choosing your profile photo or filling out your contact info, you should be defining goals for your Facebook page. Even if you planned out your goals before you implemented your Facebook strategy, it’s easy to lose focus and just post content for the sake of posting (and your time is too precious for that!).
Ask yourself what it is you ultimately want to achieve: is it increasing your sales? Is it boosting brand awareness? Or maybe you want to connect with your customers and build up a community? Whatever you want to get from Facebook, there will be a way of measuring whether your approach is working – and this requires keeping track of KPIs.
Some important Facebook KPIs to focus on are:
Impressions: The number of times a post from your page is displayed.
Reach: The number of unique views your post receives.
Engagement Rate: Your engagement rate tallies up the total number of likes, reactions, comments and shares on your Facebook post to give you an overall percentage of engagement based on your follower count at the time of the post.
Click-Through Rate (CTR): the number of people who clicked your post divided by the number of unique views your post received, multiplied by 100.

 DON’T: Try to do it all
Of course, it’s nice to see little green arrows next to all the KPIs Facebook is tracking, but don’t stress if your Insights page isn’t a sea of green arrows every week. Pick the main KPIs that matter most to you (depending on your goals), and work towards improving them first and foremost.
So, for example: if your goal is to drive traffic to your website, monitor the reach, link clicks and CTR of your posts. If brand awareness is the aim of the game, look at reach and impressions. Tempting though it might be, don’t try to do it all! It sounds simple, but tailor your strategy to your goals and nail those. 
Which leads us on to how you can nail your goals…
  DO: Research your audience
As with every piece of content you post (and a good rule for life in general!) – know your audience. You already have so much information about your audience at your fingertips, you just need to know what you’re looking for so you can tailor your Facebook content accordingly. To find out about fans already following your page, you can use Facebook Insights to see their gender, language, rough location, and marital status. You can even check when they’re usually online, so you know when to post.
To get a more in-depth knowledge of your audience members, there’s no better way than by simply asking them about themselves. You can do this via questionnaires, quizzes, surveys and polls posted to your Facebook page, where you can ask specific questions about your audience, the groups they belong to, or even the influencers they follow. All this extra info will allow you to build precise representations of your fans and customers, which in turn will help you to target your posts to the perfect audience.
 Know what your audience wants – and deliver!
 DON’T: Buy Likes
Buying likes can seem like a fast-track to more visibility and authority on Facebook, but it sure ain’t! Facebook’s cunning algorithm can suss out fake likes and automated engagement from bots straight away, so I’m afraid you have to play the long game. Buying likes will lead to your account and your content being penalized by Facebook. If you’re not following the rules, Facebook will restrict the reach of your posts and all that effort will be for nothing.
Besides, real engagement is what you should be aiming for, and this is something that can’t be bought. Even if you’re starting out with zero likes, you can build up a decent following through promoting your Facebook page through email newsletters, Facebook widgets and icons on your blog, and by simply reaching out to your network and asking them to like your page!
 DO: Post valuable content
Okay, so I admit that this is a bit vague. The concept of valuable content is a slippery one, as what’s valuable for one audience won’t be for another. But that said, there are a few ‘rules’ to keep in mind that, combined with your audience research, will keep your content on point:
 Choose high-quality images that represent your brand well. You might not have a huge budget to create your own photos or buy high-quality imagery, but you should always make sure your photos aren’t pixelated or overly ‘stocky’ (even if they’re free stock images). Anything copyrighted is a definite no-go!
Be entertaining. Have a sense of humor! No matter who you’re talking to, remember that everyone likes to smile. Don’t be afraid to crack a joke or use a well-placed emoji now and again.

Keep content ‘snackable’. Whether you’re sharing an update, launching a competition or sharing a blog post, make sure your post is short, informative and to the point. You can use CTA’s to take your audience to a product or landing page where they will learn more. As a brand on Facebook, short and sweet is a winning formula.
  DON’T: Post sales-oriented or spammy content
 You might have noticed by now that Facebook wants you to spend, spend, spend in order to get your content seen. We all know the saying ‘pay to play’, and even though it’s slightly annoying now, it’s definitely still true. Facebook ads (when done well) are a great way to help you reach your goals, but don’t expect promotional content that isn’t an ad to gain much traction. Facebook wants to maintain a ‘community’ element to the platform by restricting spammy sales content, but they also know that by restricting promotional posts they push marketers towards ads (and spending money!).
However, even if that wasn’t the case, posts which simply push products and lack a storytelling element would still flop. Why? Because people simply aren’t interested.
  If you want to engage your community, reach lots of Facebook users, and grow your account: tell a story. Share relevant and interesting content related to your field. Of course, you can feature products or talk about upcoming events, launches or sales, BUT don’t forget to weave this into a piece of content that has context, inspires emotion and provides value.
 DO: Stick to a posting schedule
Looking at when your existing fans are online is a good place to start when deciding when to post, but to know which time slot works best in practice, you need to have a posting schedule – and stick to it.
A posting schedule will allow you to easily plan your posts in advance, assign the post to a team member (if you’re not doing it all yourself!), keep track of your posting days and times, and monitor the performance of each of your posts. A simple excel spreadsheet works well, but you can also use tools such as Trello to organize your content schedule.
Post at the same time for a period of at least a week and track the results – how many likes, comments and shares are you getting when you post at this set time? How much traffic are the posts bringing you? Try out a couple of different days and times over a period of a few months until you find your perfect posting time!

 DON’T: Forget about your community!
It can be tempting to focus solely on sharing your own carefully-crafted content and leaving it to work its magic, but not so fast! You’re forgetting something: your community. To fully engage your community, you should be answering their questions, replying to their feedback and reacting to their comments. Of course, it doesn’t take much to say thanks if you receive a compliment, but nobody likes addressing negative feedback.
Unfortunately, pretending it isn’t there will do more harm than good. If you don’t show your community that you value their time and opinions, they’re going to be put right off doing business with you in the future.
So, nurture your community, say thank you to your fans, and take note of feedback that can help you improve!
With these do’s and don’t’s in mind, managing your Facebook page won’t seem like such a huge task. Your traffic and engagement are bound to grow if you take a strategic approach – you don’t need to be a content machine to be successful on Facebook, you just need to get the basics right, and keep experimenting to find the perfect formula!

Janelle Mones new album Dirty Computer features the acclaimed singer-songwriter at her most revealing and freewheeling.
The 32-year-old star is one of the most respected in music, and shes won raves and challenged listeners with an ambitious blend of funk, pop, rock, soul, and hip-hop that has often made her hard to define. But being pinned down has never been Mones styleand on Dirty Computer she lets her freak flag fly.
Mone has admitted that her early android persona and conceptual The Metropolis and ArchAndroid projects were sometimes driven by the need to protect herself from judgment. As Mone has evolved as an artist, shes come into her own creatively and as a womanand now seems fully in command of her art and emboldened by living in her truth. Like virtually every full-length release in her genre-bending discography, Mones Dirty Computer is a conceptual affair: In the accompanying short film, shes Jane 57821, a nonconformist in the near future who needs to be cleaned by the powers-that-be. Shes a rebel in love with her community and in love with Zen (Tessa Thompson)and shes fighting to be herself.
Arriving a whopping five years after 2013s The Electric Lady, the new album finds Mone simultaneously at her most musically accessible and her most forthcoming lyrically. It feels like shes the most free on record that shes ever been. Not that Mone has ever seemed constrained, exactlybut her work has always seemed to put the concept ahead of emotional nakedness. On Dirty Computer, the concept is driven by her introspection, not the other way around. This is the strongest set of pop songs that Mone has released, as she dances between sunshine synth-pop, dance-driven funk jams, and lush soul. Working alongside longtime collaborators like Deep Cotton and Roman GianArthur, Mone isnt in altogether unfamiliar territory musically, but she is breaking bold new ground in terms of themes, and shes putting them across in more engaging ways than she has before.
It sounds like an anthem for youthful brazenness and epic summer nights; it also sounds like a spiritual manifesto.
The album opens with the Brian Wilson-assisted title track, with Wilsons trademark only-but-him harmonies providing a warm bed on which Mones warm lead vocal coos, I love you in space and time, with sparsely skittering production. With its twinkling chords and cascading drums, Crazy Classic Life channels 80s synth sounds a la Depeche Mode as Mone outlines her version of freedom: I am not Americas nightmareI am the American cool. She wants a crazy classic life, and shes perfectly OK with however it ends as long as shes done it all. It sounds like an anthem for youthful brazenness and epic summer nights; it also sounds like a spiritual manifesto. The synth vibes remain on Take A Byte, and its a pure party: The thumping groove and handclaps are dance-floor-perfect, as Mone sings, Dress me upI like it better when we both pretend, in one of the most effectively sensual and slinky moments on Dirty Computer.
Princes influence looms large on Dirty Computer, an album that owes a lot to his most personally affirming dance anthems like Uptown and Erotic City. The guitar-driven Screwed even opens with a rhythm-guitar lick thats a clear nod to his 1986 classic Kiss, but presented in a completely different musical context. Sex, bodywere gonna crash your party, sounds like the best kind of warning, as Mone provides yet another song that sounds like it was made for the best weekend youve ever had.
This is a fucking fun album.
Django Jane debuted online back in February, with Mone trying on trap and showing that her creativity sits comfortably at virtually any stylistic table. Sassy, classyKool-Aid with the kale, Janelle raps confidentlyand with more panache than most others who regularly trade in the format. Remember when they said I looked to mannish? she pointedly recalls, reminding everyone that during her ArchAndroid days she wasnt always the beloved pop culture icon she is today. She deftly addresses gender, race, and her own still-growing legacy as an artistperfectly seguing into Pynk, the other previously released single that had fans salivating in early April.
The double entendre of the title/hookand the cheekily clever music videois sort of a second affirmation of Django Jane. The color pink serves as a metaphor for both the universality of human existence and the specificity of womanhood. When the surging guitar and Some like that! hook kick in, its clear that Mone knew she had another anthem here.

Prince collaborated with Mone directly and Make Me Feel is an appropriate tribute, homage, and confirmation that no mainstream artist embodies His Royal Badness most provocative, singularly focused creativity as much as Janelle Mone. That groove burns itself into your brain within seconds, when that all-too-distinctive rhythm guitar begins punching holes in the pace, as Janelle ad-libs a joyful screechit sounds like an old friend making a welcome appearance at this Mone-led party. Prince lives. Pharrell shows up for I Got the Juice, as Mone flaunts and taunts a bitover African rhythms and a percolating beat.
I Like That is the most atmospheric moment on Dirty Computer, a gorgeous melody carried on a wave of synth strings, as Mone sings, A little crazy, little sexy, little cool / Little rough around the edges but I keep it smooth / Im always left of center and thats right where I belong / Im the random minor note you hear in major songs. She drops a brief rhyme about a childhood crush who rated me a 6 after she cut her perm, but makes it clear that she always knew I was the shit. And she goes for 90s neo-soul vibes on Dont Judge Me, a song that addresses personal insecurity and the fear that comes from wanting to open and be your real self around the person who makes you feel the most loved but also the most scared: Even though you tell me you love meIm afraid that you just love my disguise.
That element of fear is revisited on So Afraid, a somber, guitar-driven tune that somewhat recalls the 60s vibes of the title track. Theres so much to be gained by running toward love, but Janelle Mone expresses the doubt and apprehension of emotional connections beautifully here. And she parodies the jingoism and paranoia that defines so much of the good ol US of A on the rollicking album closer Americana. Once again playfully tapping into her Prince-ish tendencies, Mone offers a nod to the foot-stomping raucousness of Lets Go Crazy, while taking aim at everything from traditional gender roles to xenophobia to generic Americana. Its an upbeat end to an album full of joy and freedom, and it offers its best line: I wonder if you were blind, would it help you make a better decision.
Janelle Mone has been one of the most era-defining artists of the past 10 years, and shes done it without the kind of all-world hit singles that seem to define pop culture status. Shes managed to carve a niche in contemporary music that is uniquely her own, and here shes created the kind of album that gives voice to the creative, proudly outside-the-box individuals that have fueled so much of the cultural and social change of the times. The android Cindi Mayweather gave Mone a persona on which to explore her boldest ideas, but in putting who she is front-and-center, Mone has delivered her most relatable work to date. And it couldnt come at a better time. Black women have been leading a cultural charge, and Mone sits alongside so many of the boldest women of her generation. With Dirty Computer, shes given us a stellar pro-woman, pro-LGBTQ, party like its 1999, middle-finger-to-the-status-quo dance record.
There has beenand will continue to bea lot written about Mones coming out in the latest issue of Rolling Stone and how this album is reflective of her desire to be her. She said in the interview: Being a queer black woman in America someone who has been in relationships with both men and womenI consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker. Mone has long been an inspiration to anyone who dared to be themselves, and her latest art documents an important moment in her journey as a creator and as an individual. Its exciting to witness her come into her own.
And it sounds like shes having a blast.
