Many e-commerce firms were forced to suspend deliveries to their customers in major cities across the country on Wednesday with local authorities unable to ensure the safety of delivery persons on the first day of the 21-day nationwide lockdown imposed to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

Angry customers vented their anger on social media even as police services scrambled to put in place a system where delivery persons for online vendors were able to go about their jobs unmolested.

“The key challenge in the field is that sometimes our delivery partners are getting stopped by the police, and some of them have even got beaten up by the police for no fault of theirs,” online grocer BigBasket said in a statement.

“It will help to have better coordination between the Centre and State, and between the State and local police, to ensure that our delivery vans and bikes don’t get stopped by the police,” the firm added.

Late on Wednesday, the e-commerce firm put out a statement that they were now operational in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Coimbatore, Indore, Mumbai, Mysuru, Noida, Surat and Vadodara. However, services remained suspended in Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Gurugram, Ludhiana, Pune, Vizag, Hyderabad and Vijayawada.

Earlier, e-commerce major Flipkart announced that it had suspended its services, while rival Amazon India halted orders for non-essential products. Gurugram-headquartered Snapdeal also said it was working towards completing delivery of essential goods.

“We are an essential service and our delivery persons must be allowed to perform their duty,” Shan Kadavil, CEO & Co-founder, FreshtoHome, said in a statement. “The directive from the top is clear but the implementation on the ground level is different.”

“What China followed to control coronavirus, we must do the same. Home delivery is the only option to prevent the spread. We are forced to stop delivery in almost all parts of India including Pune and Mumbai, other than Bengaluru, because our delivery boys are beaten up by police or they are not allowed to move… hopefully in a day or two, delivery across the country should resume.”

Local hurdles

In Bengaluru, a customer who had ordered groceries and fish online, said that she had been informed by FreshtoHome that they had been unable to deliver despite their best efforts on account of “local authority hurdles”.

Confusion prevailed in Bengaluru as most supermarkets remained closed, while those that were open ran out of stocks. The restrictions on the movement of vehicles disrupted the wholesale-retail and farmer-trader supply chains in the city, creating an artificial scarcity, leading to a spurt in prices. A kilogram of tomatoes that were available for ₹25-₹30 a day earlier cost as much ₹80 a kilo on Wednesday.

Working overtime

While major online delivery platforms have been hit hard by bottlenecks in stock procurement, retail stores in Kerala were working overtime to keep the food and grocery delivery chain active despite a surge in online orders.

“We receive an average 300 to 400 orders through online after the doorstep delivery was launched,” said N. B. Swaraj, media co-ordinator of the Lulu Group in Kochi. “There has been an increase in demand after the nationwide lockdown was announced,” he added.

On the availability of stocks, Mr. Swaraj said there was a dip in supply of vegetables following the restrictions imposed at the inter-State borders. “However, we have enough stocks of rice and other essential items,” he added.

In Hyderabad, thousands of customers of online supermarkets in the city faced massive problems with grocery deliveries either getting cancelled or disabled on account of the lockdown.

Several customers of BigBasket and Grofers took to social media to bring the issue to the attention of the authorities. Many shared screenshots, which purportedly showed that e-stores were facing problems in delivering the groceries due to “restrictions imposed by local authorities on the movement of goods in spite of clear guidelines provided by central authorities to enable essential services”.

Grofers was found on 27 December 2013 by Saurabh Kumar and Albinder Dhindsa. Gurgaon in Haryana, India is its headquarter.

But have you ever thought what does ‘Grofers’ mean? Let’s find out everything you want to know about Grofers.

1. What does Grofers mean?

A ‘gopher’ is a common term for an errand boy in North America, which is where Saurabh and Albinder met. We began with the delivery of groceries & pharmaceuticals and ‘Gopher + Grocer’ eventually became Grofers. Also, we felt that the name Grofers had great potential for category association for our consumers. Since we deliver a multitude of household items, we want the name Grofers to become synonymous with groceries.

2. Tell us about the basic idea behind this start-up?

We used to be a delivery service for local merchants and realized that the ordering process from these shops was still unreliable, offline and unorganized. Hence, we decided to build a front-end system to help consumers order conveniently and quickly. With increasing inclination towards shopping on-the-go, the ability to provide a large and viable business solution became high. Consumers increasingly want things on-demand and many startups are providing such solutions.

We worked on a B2B model for a few months and then started the B2C business with the launch of our app in December 2014. This is when we started catering to end consumers directly.

3. How was the initial response that you received?

Delhi-NCR has lately become a melting pot of working professionals. The typical habit of weekend grocery shopping became taxing because of tight working hours and an increasing need for convenience at the doorstep. The transition of traditional shopping method to shopping on-the-go has paved the way for the shift to online grocery shopping. We started with delivering groceries and other daily needs in Delhi-NCR only. We have now expanded to 17 cities with over 1.75 lakh products from brands like Coca-Cola, Crossword, Dunkin Donuts, Hokey Pokey, HUL Aayush, Hamley’s, Happily Unmarried, Hypercity, Kwality Walls, Mahindra Retail, Nestle, Patanjali, Prestige, Reliance Fresh & Reliance Digital, Samsung, Vadilal, Wildcraft and many other small and large-scale merchants.

4. How many cities have you covered till now?

Grofers is operational in 17 cities: Agra, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Nagpur, Mumbai, Pune, Surat and Vadodara.

5. Tell us about the products available in Grofers:

Grofers offers groceries, fresh fruits & vegetables, bakery items, pet care, baby care & personal care products, electronics, flowers, home & office needs, kitchenware, toys and much more.

6. What is the procedure to shop at Grofers?

Grofers is a mobile application available on both, iOS and Android platforms. You need to download the app on the mobile phone and get going. Choose from a wide assortment of products, your favourite neighbourhood store, and schedule the delivery according to your convenience. All your daily needs will be delivered to your doorstep instantly.

7. Tell us about your ideas to keep your stand strong in this growing e-commerce market in India:

In today’s fast-paced and power packed environment, we offer the value of convenience and the benefit of time. That is what we provide to our consumer. And by the nature of this business, everything boils down to ‘Customer Service’. We believe that the service that will give a great experience to the consumer and solve a lot of the underlying infrastructure issues, will win at the end of the day. Grofers entered electronics and delivered iPhones in the midnight of its India launch to delight consumers. We also launched new categories like kitchenware, home & office needs, toys and much more. We feel convenience and ease of delivery of all the items to your doorstep within a few hours will be the key driving factors for consumers in this category.

8. Tell us about the facility of delivery you provide:

Grofers has a huge network of delivery executives spread across cities that we are present in. We do not have any third party players onboard with us. We have a huge network divided into zones with their hubs. Our entire back end is technology enabled.

9. How has been the journey of Grofers till now?

In June 2015, we launched in 5 cities in 5 days. Further, we expanded our operations to 17 cities. We started off with the delivery of groceries in Delhi NCR. We entered the electronics category in August and started delivering mobile phones and accessories. We delivered gold & silver coins on Diwali along with Gitanjali Jewels. We were also responsible for exclusively launching Coca-Cola’s Sprite Zero, Fanta Green Mango, and Nestle Munch Nuts to name a few. Brands like Reliance Fresh, Hamleys, Haldiram’s, Pepsico, Dabur’s New U, Patanjali, Wildcraft, Phillips, Unilever and many others came on board with us to delight our consumers.

We have now expanded to grocery, fruits & vegetables, beauty & wellness, baby care, electronics, home appliances, bakery, meats & seafood, pet care, flowers, home & office, sports & fitness, and watches.

Early days at Grofers were all about execution and still are. We started off by trying to improve the delivery experience for consumers through technology and are now making that into a business of building a network and involving shopkeepers & consumers. We are building on our technology and user experience which have been our key focus areas. We started doing 50,000+ daily orders. Reached close to 3 million app downloads and were featured in a list of ‘Top 25 apps of 2015’ on App Store and in ‘Top 50 apps on 2015’.

10. Tell us about your views on business in India:

2015 was a year for ‘Startups’ where a plethora of big and small players entered the online hyperlocal marketplace. But, eventually, it all boiled down to ‘Customer Service’. We believe that the service that will give a great experience to the consumer and solve a lot of the underlying infrastructure issues, will win at the end of the day. Grofers entered electronics and delivered iPhones in the midnight of its India launch to delight consumers. We also launched new categories like kitchenware, home & office needs, toys and much more. But 2016 would be a year of consolidation. We can’t expect 10 players in every space and since grocery in the hyperlocal market is a bigger space, probably 5 will survive, but consolidation will happen.

The convenience and ease of delivery of all the items to your doorstep within a few hours will restore consumers. The hyperlocal market will be filtered on the quality of customer value. The better the value addition, better will be the chances of survival.

11. Tell us about your future plans:

Going forth, we want to bring over 1,00,000 merchants onboard in 2016. Also, we look towards increasing our partnership with farmers to help in supply chain improvements in order to get better products to the markets. We don’t make annual plans, we plan semi-annually and then execute them in the quarter. We want to deliver all your household needs to your doorstep.
