Photos from the elusive early-80s Tokyo Grand Guignol play Mercury, also known as Mercuro and Merbro. While the Tokyo Grand Guignol are more well known for their subsequent work in the original 1985 version of Lychee Light Club, Mercury was an ambitious debut effort that was as much Tetsuo: The Iron Man and Alien as it was Ranpo. In the two-act narrative, an unstable school teacher runs a health program where students volunteer to have their blood replaced with the outdated medicinal substance Merbromin. The Merbromin substance turns the students into sentient machines, with their organs being made “valuable” in how the doses of mercury turns their innards metallic. In the midst of all this, a mysterious transfer student infiltrates the school grounds to uncover the whereabouts of his missing sister. Plots ultimately intertwine, resulting in a nightmarish Oedipal bloodbath in a macabre science lab that’s riddled with many taboo secrets. The play contains several infamous special effects standouts. One of the centerpieces was an extended sequence at the beginning of the second act where the schoolmaster (performed by the now mainstream actor Kyusaku Shimada, originally working under the pseudonym Lovecraft Shimada) carries out a live vivisection on a student to surgically extract his pubescent urges, which had manifested as a chestburster. The screenplay is decorated with intricate surrealist details with characters speaking direct quotations from dadaist poets of the early Showa period, resulting in an experience that is as much nocturnal poetry as it is taboo horror. The play only had one run in 1984, with a heavily truncated TV performance being done a year later on the “Youth Performance Special” morning Nippon TV program where the set pieces from the openings of the first act and second act are strung side-by-side. While a full video recording is known to exist of the play on both DVD and VHS, the recording has never surfaced. It’s a damn shame.
Tumblr media
The only available bits of media in relation to the play to this day are the screenplay, a handful of grayscale photos and some parts of the soundtrack. The known songs that were featured in Mercury include: 1. Four Enclosed Walls - Public Image LTD 2. Sons Of Pioneers - Japan 3. The title theme of the 1956 film “Des gens sans importance” 4. Brilliant Trees - David Sylvian Bits of media relating to Mercury’s short 1984 run are steadily being resurfaced every day. Two of the images in this post were digitized by yours truly. The source was the 28th volume of Yaso magazine, a volume that concerned underground theater which included and interview with Norimizu Ameya, the lead director of the Tokyo Grand Guignol.

Note
If I'm not too late to the party, can I request a yandere concept for Daan (fear and hunger)?
I'd love to write more for Funger, yeah! Moonscorched timer not mentioned.
Yandere! Daan/Daniël Concept
Pairing: Platonic -> Romantic
Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Obsession, Trauma, Overprotective behavior, Depression, Murder, Violence, Jealousy, Fear of loss, Slight possessive behavior, Mentioned drinking, Blood, Religious themes/Cults, Forced/Dubious relationship.
Tumblr media
As I have not played the game myself, I had to scour Youtube for Daan's interactions and I also found a wiki for his personality.
Honestly? He is one of the sadder characters.
He essentially grew up alone since the age of 13 due to his parents being part of the Sylvian cult.
He was originally once in love and learning to be a doctor after being taken in later on in his life.
Then he was drafted to war and came back to his family dead.
The reason he came to Prehevil was to try and find a reason for why his wife and mentor were killed.
He's a man cloaked in depression and mostly is seen alone while trying to investigate the town.
When he can he is kind to those who need it, yet he is a man followed by demons.
He has knowledge in the occult and medicine and is shown to be protective of younger characters like Levi and Marina most likely due to his own trauma.
There's a good chance as a contestant you meet him by chance.
Daan is most likely diagnosing bodies of Moonscorched villagers when you find him.
He takes note of your hesitancy yet can tell you don't really want to be alone in a place like this.
He can't blame you... so conversation between you starts.
Daan works as both a platonic and romantic yandere.
He most likely starts as platonic as he is still grieving the loss of his wife.
Daan would be protective like he is with younger contestants.
Even if you were 21 or even a little younger than him instead of 18 he shows the trait.
Daan is a yandere who doesn't want his darling to suffer or go through pain.
He knows what it's like and would try to prevent it due to him being compassionate.
Daan doesn't mind the fact you came to speak with him while he was investigating.
He likes that you offered to help, even if it's just because you didn't want to be alone.
His obsession is slow acting as he is wary of being close with anyone here but he does prove to be a helpful companion.
Your discussions are often of theories of what could've happened in Prehevil.
You even learn facts about the occult from Daan along with basic medical knowledge.
Your companionship starts pretty basic, partners for survival and investigation.
Sometimes you two share info about your past in private.
Daan appears hesitant to share at first but eventually he reveals to you about why he lost his eye and his past/reasons for being here.
You show sympathy, something he doesn't feel he needs but appreciates.
During him being bartender, if you confirm you're of age, Daan doesn't mind offering to make your favorite drink to ease the nerves.
Or if you just don't prefer alcohol he can find something else.
Daan, despite his past, would be very caring towards you.
If you're ever injured or infected with something from Prehevil he'll look into treating you.
Just because he has no official license does not mean he's clueless in what he's doing.
He'll patch you up and keep an eye on you.
Daan can be rude and callous at times, usually aimed at Karin for her theories, yet he'll be nicer around you.
Many contestants can tell you and Daan are a close pair.
Some even make rumors you're closer than many think.
Daan ignores such rumors for the most part as he's still sore about the murder of his loved ones and just...
You probably don't deserve all the baggage he carries.
Despite this, the thought does linger in his mind the longer you're around.
When he looks at you and how eager you are to help him, he feels his heart melt a little.
It's a familiar feeling.
You don't mind him venting and you keep him company.
Maybe it's just the lingering depression that's making him desperate but he does yearn for what he had before.
His normal behavior takes a shift when he begins to consider what he could have with you.
He begins to be a bit more physical with you to try and test the waters.
Pats on the back, arm around the shoulders, full on hugs...
If you're receptive to this he'll go further and further.
When you start showing resistance he backs off to not scare you.
Daan may show possessive behavior due to his potential Moonscorched form.
For the most part Daan is overly protective and caring towards you.
He no doubt has PTSD and fears the idea of losing you.
He fears he'll hurt you if he becomes a monster and he fears you'll die in front of him.
He watches your health like a hawk and never lets you out of his sight.
Even though Daan is skilled in mixology I doubt he'd use alcohol to manipulate you.
He cares for you too much for that and, like I said before, hates the idea of hurting you.
If anything Daan wants to prevent you from going through the same trauma he went through, similar to Levi.
Daan has experience in romantic relationships and would be sweet with you once he gets there.
He's slow to make romantic due to his past but once he's there?
He has you in an iron grip, like claws digging into your back.
He's jealous of other contestants at times and appears possessive due to his fear of losing you like his wife.
It could just be Rher's influence, maybe even Pocketcat...
But Daan finds himself wanting to make the other contestants bleed for you.
If he doesn't do something, they will.
If he doesn't kill them, you'll die.
He just hates the look you give him when you see him covered in blood.
He promised he'd never hurt you... look at him now.
The normally compassionate yet sometimes callous doctor surrounded by death as he looks at you with strange eyes.
Are they slits? Why does the moonlight make it seem like they're glowing?
Daan understands you're scared of him.
Who wouldn't be?
But he couldn't lose the love of his life yet again.
So maybe he'll embrace being a monster if it means the pain goes away... and he gets what he wants.

Marriage in Fear and Hunger
An Analysis of Sylvian Rituals - SPOILERS for both games
Despite being a core mechanic in the first game (and present to a much lesser degree in the second) it's interesting to reflect on how little we truly know about the marriage of flesh beyond its ritualistic origins and physical characteristics.
Going back to the first Fear and Hunger, marriages of flesh could be performed on any ritual circle regardless of location or the character's godly affinity, whereas in the second worship to Sylvian is reserved only for asymmetric circles containing a God's specific sigil. I may have missed something in the game's books (I was unable to collect them all through my playthrough) but from the "Occult Grimoires" it's evident that the asymmetric circle was adopted at some point in history, replacing the previous ritual circle between the events of the Dungeons and Termina for unknown reasons.
Moving forward to Termina, from what I can tell from limited information it appears to be implied through Daan's diagnosis dialogue that the Sylvian trooper (along with other high ranking members of the Bremen Army) are the result of a marriage of flesh, existing alongside the platoon which clearly consisting of many different humans melted together in a form reminiscent of the human hydra from the first game. While the Bunnymasks, from what we're able to see in the game, appear to be Sylvian's most prevalent cult; however they don't seem interested in creating marriages, instead indulging in a different Sylvian ritual. This raises some questions about the role of marriage throughout the world of Fear and Hunger, as the marriage of flesh within the dungeon are almost exclusively created out of necessity rather than as a genuine act of godly devotion or genuine love between participants. But then again the love that Sylvian has for her creations is much deeper than the love they are able to return to her and, as a result, maybe even the simple desire to create a marriage through merging flesh is enough of an act of 'love' if done in the name of Sylvian, even without any truly affectionate feelings to support it.
"Blood & Flower magic I" found in the first game describes a marriage as an act of love in the passage that follows: "I no longer have to fear for separation from my loved ones, for we can forever join in a marriage of flesh. An act of love that creates a beautiful unison for two souls."
In the White Bunker there appears to be (assumption, not confirmed) a failed marriage within one of the closed rooms of the third bunker. The creature isn't hostile although it does appear to be in great pain. This brings up one of the more important questions regarding the role of a marriage and, more specifically, the soul union as a result. Marriages are stronger than the average human, as shown clearly in the first game from the Marriage's boosted attack, but what about the state of the creation's mind? What exactly is there to be gained from merging consciousness? As things currently stand we have no idea what goes on inside the mind of a marriage, but I believe that the two souls within it remain distinct from one another, each acting as an inner monologue with control over the host body. The union is specifically described as a marriage of flesh rather than a marriage of the mind which is why I believe that there is still some degree of separation. From what we can read in Blood & Flower magic, marriage was, at one point, viewed as a beautiful unison and a very high form of love as it entails becoming permanently merged with a loved one. But why are members of the Bremen army using this ritual? The weaponized Human Hydra appears to be a successful marriage, even though it is unable to function on its own and dies immediately if the Sylvian Trooper is defeated before the platoon is able to join the battle.
Continuing this thought, while the platoon does seem to retain some of it's human understanding, but unlike the Human Hydra it is unable to speak. The marriage is stable, but important aspects of it's humanity have been discarded in favor of turning it into a machine of pure destruction, which calls into question the morality of 'love' when it comes to marriage and the different aspects and consequences of it's creation. The corruption of love could also be significant, as a ritual meant to create a union between two souls has instead been used to birth abominations (like the Centaur)
I'm sure this has some real lore significance and implications, but I can't quite figure it out yet so for now this is going to be left open ended.

I saw you were a Fear And Hunger fan! I was curious, can you imagine any kink headcanons for the playable Termina contestants? Who are your favourite characters and why btw? I’m so glad to have someone as cool as you a part of the fandom 💕💖💕💕
I'm gonna be real, this isn't really a fandom blog, but every now and then I'll humor stuff like this.
Termina is a great sequel, but I think I'm a little more partial to the first game, for some reason. The contestants are uninteresting to me, I'm a monsterfucker, I could care less what humans are into. Their moonscorched forms however, yes that's more to my tastes. Specifically Chaugnar (whatever gender they are in this form), the Gentleman, Dysmorphia and the Mastermind. I do like Samarie however, purely because she's entirely unhinged and stalkerish and- Well- I do love my yanderes.
Needless to say, I'm much more into the monsters of Termina than I am the contestants. Sorry to disappoint.
My favorite characters from the second game are Daan and Samarie. I love the complexity behind them and seeing their tales get spun into several different ends, each more gruesome and tragic than the last, is satisfying.
From the first game, I love D'arce and Enki. They're polar opposites. D'arce is a sweet woman who honestly doesn't deserve this, and Enki is generally a piece of shit, I'd like to shove my boot up his ass. But there's a lot more characters that I love from the original.
My favorite gods have to be All-Mer, Sylvian, and Chambara.
[Aww, don't fluster me like that 🤍. The universe of Fear and Hunger is absolutely brutal and bleak and I flock to that type of media like moths to a flame. It's absolutely astounding. I adore the gods, the deformed entities, the inevitable honest tragedy and sheer devastation sweeping every instance of these games. It's brilliant.]

Favourite Colour: grey, blue
Favourite Flower: lavender
Favourite Dessert: chocolate cake, pain d’épices
What is in his bag? knife, handkerchief, bandage, sharpening stone, another softer handkerchief for glasses, another knife, comb, more knives
Random fact(s):
His favourite dish is quiche Lorraine.
Because his uncle took rather long to get married and have children, Aurèle was regarded as his eventual successor and educated as such. This was only phased out when Gérard was born. (All Beauchene/Dupont children receive excellent, special education nonetheless.) If Aurèle had remained his uncle’s heir, he would have taken the Dupont surname upon succeeding him.
Aurèle was relieved when Gérard was born because he always thought he was unfit to become the Marquis one day. (He also worries about his little cousin in that regard.)
Background info: He was originally named Gervais before I accidentally named the original Clockmaker character that too. I then changed his name to Aurèle, but Gervais the Clockmaker ended up getting replaced by Florentin.
First appearance: The Countess, Travelling (Chapter 21)
----
Name: Jacques Beauchene
Nickname(s): Jacky
Birthday: February 12, 1835
Age: 13

Favourite Flower: very difficult to choose!
Favourite Dessert: cakes with fruits, particularly strawberry cake
What is in his bag? book, notebook, pencil, glasses case, handkerchief, a secondary notebook, a little telescope, compass
Random fact(s):
He used to be a bit afraid of ghosts when he was little. Now, he does not believe in anything paranormal or supernatural.
He wants to be a researcher and author for wildlife and nature. Although his parents assured him it was fine to pursue this goal, Jacques still feels odd not to help with/take part in the “family business” at all in the future.
He’s a bit embarrassed that he still occasionally requires a night light.
Background info: None.
First appearance: The Countess, Mystery (Chapter 22)
----
Name: Arnaud Beauchene
Nickname(s): None
Birthday: October 15, 1839
Age: 8
Physical description: black hair, green-blue eyes
Affiliation: Beauchene family; Dupont family
Occupation: None
Base of Operations: Château de Dupont; Château de Charbonneau (temporarily)
Favourite Colour: red, blue
Favourite Flower: marguerite, purple hyacinth
Favourite Dessert: soufflé
What is in his bag? marbles, card game, notebook, pencil, small toy train, hair ribbons, handkerchief, tissues, small whetstone
Random fact(s):
Because he has always been so quiet and unintentionally blends in with the wallpaper, Jacques used to believe in ghosts for a while.
Arnaud hears and sees quite a lot but prefers to keep his discoveries and observations to himself.
He’s set to become Gérard’s right-hand man when he becomes the Marquis.
Background info: None.
First appearance: The Countess, Mystery (Chapter 22)
----
Name: Anaïs Dupont
Nickname(s): None
Birthday: September 21, 1840
Age: 7
Physical description: red-brown hair, blue eyes
Affiliation: Dupont family
Occupation: None
Base of Operations: Château de Dupont; Château de Charbonneau (temporarily)
Favourite Colour: red, purple
Favourite Flower: iris, anemone
Favourite Dessert: everything with pomegranate
What is in her bag? handkerchief, small faerie doll; she has the habit of not carrying around a lot (i.a. because she sometimes loses things)
Random fact(s):
She liked faeries before her near-fatal fever.
While she likes faerie stories the best, she is very enthusiastic about myths and legends in general. She is particularly interested in Celtic (because of the faeries) and Greek mythology; her favourite Greek myth is that of Orpheus and Eurydice.
Background info: She was originally named Amable and is now named after Anaïs from The Amazing World of Gumball. (She gets a bit of her personality from her too!)
First appearance: The Countess, Mystery (Chapter 22)
----
Name: Gérard Dupont
Nickname(s): None
Birthday: March 22, 1845
Age: 3
Physical description: light brown hair, blue eyes
Affiliation: Dupont family
Occupation: None
Base of Operations: Château de Dupont; Château de Charbonneau (temporarily)
Favourite Colour: blue, yellow
Favourite Flower: the colourful ones
Favourite Dessert: chocolate cake
What is in his bag? too small to carry a bag, but keeps a stuffed toy close by and his pockets are filled with all sorts of things
Random fact(s): By 1889, no one calls him by his given name anymore as he has become the new Marquis.
Background info:
He was originally meant to be five, not three years old.
Gérard was originally set to become the Aristocrat of Evil with the scarred eye before I changed my mind.
First appearance: The Countess, Mystery (Chapter 22)
----
Name: ??? Dupont
Nickname(s): The Marquis
Birthday: 1762
Age: 86
Physical description: grey, formerly brown hair, green eyes
Affiliation: Dupont family
Occupation: The Marquis
Base of Operations: Château de Dupont; Château de Charbonneau (temporarily)
Random fact(s):
He had a very happy and loving marriage with his wife Séphora. (She had red hair which her son and granddaughter inherited.) She passed away in 1840.
He tried his hand at clockmaking too which frustrated Florentin because the Marquis was not good at it, and Florentin feared for his workshop and utensils. (The Marquis wasn’t being serious and only wanted to annoy Florentin; he was actually bad at watchmaking though.)
He grew up without any cousins. Because of this and the fact that he is a decade older than his sister and only lived with her for about ten years, the Marquis was a bit lonely in his childhood and youth. He’s rather happy that his grandchildren are so close-knit and get along well (most of the time).
Background info:
The Dupont family’s title was meant to be longer “The Marquis of […],” but I decided to scrap it because it was a very dumb reference to something. There was also meant to be a title for the heir which was cut as well.
I decided on his given name early on. It’s a funny one.
First appearance: The Countess, Mystery (Chapter 22)
----
Name: Anselme Dupont
Nickname(s): None
Birthday: 1800
Age: 48
Physical description: red-brown hair, green-blue eyes
Affiliation: Dupont family
Occupation: None
Base of Operations: Château de Dupont; Château de Charbonneau (temporarily)
Random fact(s): He was quite the lady-killer for a long time and already marked off as an “eternal bachelor” until he met his wife ten years ago.
Background info: He was originally named André. I changed his name because that was the name of one of my driving instructors, and I did not like driving lessons. (I did not end up getting my license.)
First appearance: The Countess, Malady - Part 4 (Chapter 23)
----
Name: Sylviane Dupont (née Lavoie)
Nickname(s): Sylvi
Birthday: 1805
Age: 43
Physical description: blonde hair, blue eyes
Affiliation: Dupont family
Occupation: None
Base of Operations: Château de Dupont; Château de Charbonneau (temporarily)
Random fact(s): She was tragically widowed twice before she met Anselme. (One fiancé also died before they got married.) Men began avoiding her after her second husband’s accidental death, believing she was a black widow. (In reality, she really was just that unlucky.) Sylviane had made peace with never marrying again or having children until she encountered Anselme.
Background info: She was originally named Renée. I changed her name because I didn’t like it and because I wanted to have as few names with accents as possible.
First appearance: The Countess, Malady - Part 4 (Chapter 23)
----
Name: Amélie Beauchene (née Dupont)
Nickname(s): None
Birthday: 1802
Age: 46
Physical description: brown hair, green-blue eyes
Affiliation: Beauchene family; Dupont family
Occupation: Baronne
Base of Operations: Château de Dupont; Château de Charbonneau (temporarily)
Random fact(s): She’s secretly a little nature nerd as well for which her brother used to tease her (and still does sometimes to this day). It was very refreshing to her when she met Firmin, and he treated her the same as everyone else.
Background info: Her name was always “Amelie,” but it was initially spelled differently and weirdly as a silly nod to her father’s given name. Because I didn’t know how the odd spelling would affect the name’s pronunciation, I settled on the more normal “Amélie.”
First appearance: The Countess, Malady - Part 4 (Chapter 23)
----
Name: Firmin Beauchene
Nickname(s): None
Birthday: 1798
Age: 50
Physical description: black hair, light brown eyes, glasses
Affiliation: Beauchene family; Dupont family
Occupation: Baron
Base of Operations: Château de Dupont; Château de Charbonneau (temporarily)
Random fact(s): When Amélie expressed her wish to marry him, her entire family was unsupportive because they thought they were an odd match and that Firmin would not fit into the family. The Marquis was the only one who approved him; the others eventually warmed up to him.
Background info: Like with the Marquis, he had a “full” title early on until I decided to leave it out. It was “Baron de Lorraine-Lillebonne,” and I got it from a random title generator.
First appearance: The Countess, Malady - Part 4 (Chapter 23)
----
Name: Florentin Chastain
Nickname(s): The Clockmaker
Birthday: September 9, around 1400
Age: 400+ (about 30 physically)
Physical description: short brown hair, phosphorescent chartreuse eyes, tall and lean; occasionally wears tinted glasses but dislikes them
Affiliation: Grim Reaper Dispatch (former); the Marquis (sort of begrudgingly)
Occupation: Grim Reaper (deserted); Clockmaker
Base of Operations: Grim Reaper Dispatch (former); his workshop in the woods
Favourite Colour: everything except green
Favourite Flower: doesn’t care
Favourite Dessert: angel wings, beignet
What is in his bag? various tools, some loose gears, a glasses case, a small pocket knife, very old Ohropax (he wished he had taken more)
Random fact(s):
He deserted at some point during the witch trials (they were poorly documented in France; very few executions were officially confirmed, but many, many more are presumed). It was a bleak time all over Europe (that the witch trials overlapped with constant recurrences of the plague did not help), and it made him realise the endlessness and pointlessness of his job.
Florentin became a clockmaker not long after deserting. He also became a matchmaker when he (by chance) introduced the Marquis to his wife.
He went on many adventures with the Marquis and although he would never admit it, he enjoyed some of them at least.
Background info:
The bare bones of his character come from a scrapped one-shot about Cloudia and Undertaker, with Undertaker being a very odd “clockmaker” living in the woods, and Cloudia the person who delivers his “goods.” Because I had difficulties writing it, it was eventually replaced by my one-shot “Warming” (which I wrote for a Christmas event). As I still liked the idea, I added a clockmaker Grim Reaper to WotQ (though the situation and details differ from the original one-shot idea).
The original WotQ Clockmaker character Gervais was very, very different to Florentin. I decided to replace him with Florentin because while Gervais did have ties to Grim Reapers, the story ultimately required a different kind of character – a deserted Grim Reaper. (I still like Gervais though.)
First appearance: The Countess, Clockmaker - Part 2 (Chapter 24)
----
Name: Horace Phantomhive
Nickname(s): Hoho (only his sister called him that)
Birthday: 1761
Age: 24 (at time of death; 1785)
Physical description: black hair, green-blue eyes
Affiliation: Phantomhive family; Weston College (former)
Occupation: Lord of Phantomhive; Prefect of Sapphire Owl (former)
Base of Operations: Phantomhive Manor; Phantomhive townhouse
Random fact(s):
The eldest of Octavius and Florence Phantomhive’s four children. He was “the perfect heir and son” in every way. Unfortunately, he and his twin died in a carriage “accident,” and he never succeeded his father as Earl and Watchdog.
Horace and his twin were rather aloof, keeping away from their younger siblings, so he was, despite his other qualities not a “perfect brother.” When Percival became family head, he found some interesting things his brothers had hidden away in the manor.
His middle name was “Greyson” which, just like Percival’s middle name, was never used by his parents. Horace occasionally used it as a fake surname.
Background info: I’m very for “all Phantomhives’ names contain a ‘c’” but then went and completely failed with Percival’s siblings because his original name was Horatio. However, I just noticed that I’ve never stated his name in WotQ so far although he was briefly mentioned, so I’m very quickly and sneakily fixing his name.
First appearance: Mentioned only (First: The Lady, First Training; Chapter 10)
----
Name: Quincy Phantomhive
Nickname(s): Q, Queeny (only his sister called him that)
Birthday: 1761
Age: 24 (at time of death; 1785)
Physical description: black hair, green-blue eyes
Affiliation: Phantomhive family; Weston College (former)
Occupation: None
Base of Operations: Phantomhive Manor; Phantomhive townhouse
Random fact(s):
As he was younger than Horace by a few minutes, he was the spare. He never minded it much though because he liked being “in the shadows.” He and his twin were very close and secretive.
His middle name was “Farran” which, again, was never used by his parents. He and his siblings were united in their confusion at least.
While Horace could be a bit stuck-up, Quincy was only a bit more relaxed. He was not much of a jokester but could at least crack some jokes every once in a while.
Background info:
His original name was Joseph which I just changed to adhere to my own little naming rules. I decided to rename him “Quincy” so that he and his brother could be theme-named after the poet Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus).
He was originally four years younger than Horace before I decided to make them twins.
First appearance: Mentioned only (First: The Lady, First Training; Chapter 10)
----
Name: Abigail Stafford (née Phantomhive)
Nickname(s): Abby
Birthday: 1770
Age: 29 (at time of death; 1799)
Physical description: light brown (on the verge of dark blonde) hair, grey eyes
Affiliation: Stafford family; Phantomhive family
Occupation: Baroness; Lady of Phantomhive (former)
Base of Operations: Stafford Manor; Stafford townhouse; Phantomhive Manor (former); Phantomhive townhouse (former)
Random fact(s):
She always appreciated the fact that she looked very different from her black-haired (blue)-green-eyed brothers and that her grey eyes were “all hers.”
The jokester of her sibling group, much to the annoyance of her brothers (especially Percival to whom she was the closest).
Abigail married in her early twenties but did not immediately want children. In the end, she never had any because she died in a terrible incident related to Watchdog work. (It shook up Genevieve and Percival a lot, and they didn’t speak (much) of Abigail afterwards.)
Like her brothers, she had an “unused” middle name: Delora.
Background info:
Unfortunately for me, I did mention her before by name, so I cannot sneakily change it to something that contains a “c.” At any rate, I did like the fact a bit that I messed up the (original) names of Percival’s siblings because they all died before him. Only the one sibling whose name always had a “c” in it became the successor and reached his thirties (and even his fifties!). A little accidental “curse” on my side.
Her husband’s given name is “Abraham” in my notes. I do have some name overlaps (Theodore Clifford and Theodore Sycamore, for example), so I’m a little undecided whether to change his name or not. But then, it does not really matter because he has no bearing on anything whatsoever.
First appearance: Mentioned only (First: The Lady, First Training; Chapter 10)

Here i come with my two random AND RAMBLY cents about some aspects of Rose's characterisation and style.
So, I read somewhere that he's a fan of Scandinavian metal, but I don't remember where, i think it was something Kubo said on his website... idk, i'm not sure. Or it's in the MASKED character book... i've ordered it online but I still haven't received it, so...i will check. It's probably that though.
BUT
Given his penchant for the frilly shirts and his...fashion style in general, I think it is very, very hard not to make a connection to the new romantics of the early 80s. Think of early Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Steve Strange, the so-called Blitz Kids... (there is even a sort of documentary on netflix if you're curious.) Also, late 70s Japan (the band)... (I have already said somewhere else that Rose's design gives me slight long-haired David Sylvian vibes...)
This of course ties nicely into the kind of shoujo aesthetic that he's got going on. Why? Because notably some of the most well-known "figureheads" of the new romantic movement share quite a lot with the typical features of the shoujo boys and men, and with a particular flavour of shoujo boys and men... if you get my meaning. (Not going to be more explicit than this because I want to keep a low profile... but...if you know, you know.)
That kind of languid dandy aesthetic... that kind of definitely not very "manly" vibe (which imho is the main reason why so many male bleach fans are super on board with bashing Rose every chance they get... but this is an issue for another time.)
And btw, I don't know what the Japanese original says, but the French translation of the 13 BLADEs book straight out calls him "a dandy", so... yeah. There’s that, too.
And...where does the dandy aesthetic brings us? To... Forbidden Colours. (Why am I bringing this up? Btw, it is mentioned a lot more eloquently in THIS meta by @littleeyesofpallas ) ok, this is a tenuous connection at best...but... David Sylvian (from the Japan band) wrote the song Forbidden Colours (1983) with Ryuichi Sakamoto, for the film Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence, which features an exploration of homosexual desire (and David Bowie, arguably the main inspiration behind the new romantic movement, is one of the protagonists btw).
So... where am I going with this? Idk, i'm just... listing stuff I find interesting.

d'arce definitely seems far more taken with le'garde than she seems to show on the surface. like initially it's really easy to think that she's extremely loyal to both him and their cause, given that he's her captain, but taking her s ending into account, it really paints everything she does in an almost possessive light. rushing into the dungeons of fear and hunger to reunite with him even at the cost of her own morals. upon resurrecting le'garde in her character ending she says that she isn't bothered by his new, skinless appearance so long as he is alive and she can be near him again. and, while she recognizes that he no longer seems to be the same person, warped by the torture he experienced and ready to spread suffering unto others, rather than let that shake her feelings of devotion to him... she has the thought that this could be an opportunity for them to not only be together again, but to ensure that le'garde is hers alone. given this is an extreme swerve from her origins as the girl who cast aside being a holy knight and her family given how she was disgusted with the corrupt rulers and the support of them, there's a few ways i can explain this shift in morality.
her devotion to le’garde is genuinely that strong, given he is the person who gave her purpose after she had fled the army.
the dungeons and her journey through them ended up corrupting her, as they corrupt a vast majority of the people who enter them.
seeing le’garde, the reason she had come here, dead caused her to snap and throw away everything.
the resurrection spell from sylvian itself corrupted her through the casting. it feels very probable that a spell used to resurrect a lost lover from sylvian would warp their minds and make them obsessed with each other. i mean, we' all know what happens when you show an act of love in her name. marriage exists, i don't trust sylvian to give us a ritual like that without a price.
personally i could see a combination of all those options... sorta the whole culmination of these things causing that behavior.

im starting to see what people mean by over complicating The One Transphobic Joke That Accidentally Birthed An Incredible Non Binary Character into being more female pronouns leaning and also more amorous towards snippy. like, comparing it to the original these types of vibes werent there before and it can be... well, off-putting?
but through my heart shaped glasses, in the past i already sort of read romac as "all these noteworthy guys in their own very different ways are stumbling one way or another to gain affections of literally just some run of the mill random bloke" which made it part of the fun. yea yea over emphasizing the romantically in apocalyptic who cares die etc ANYWAY
the heavier leaning towards female captain bothers me (put some respect on zeer name) the romantic stuff not so much.. for now... because a second, secret (headcanon) way I read romac then was (HEADCANON!!!) if you want to save humanity the best way to go about it was to be in love with it, all of it. by extension, captain would love the other ones just as much. (best closest recentest example i can give is sylvian from fear and hunger but without the horror aspect as much? - a goddess that loves humanity so much and to such an extreme that humanity cant possibly expect to love back nearly as much. also applies to annet a little- sylvian created the err uh. marriage of flesh and annet wiped everyone into their little neural spaces. both understood this as a gift full of love not aware of negative consequences- mainly a loss of freedom)
basically if i made a flow chart of how i think their relationships would go every arrow From captain to everyone who is/was human would just be like. "deeply in love with". lol
in any case
the constant gender miss attributing (be it for jokes or to keep character mystery, im not sure what the intent is by now and why not just settle on good ol zee/zeer) pisses me off more because it looks like these number characters are all created to be female presenting (eight and zero -as far as you can apply gender to a mug- are, at the very least) so its like. its fine when captain does it because zee can do whatever forever but as soon as other people start going princess girlie woman lady she she she her, i see red. im like come on. this beast has pronouns why are we doing this.
feel like a slight hypocrite because i think pilot should be allowed to girl assign captain occasionally. he's just going with the flow you know. i thought it was hilarious that he switched from she to he when snippy asked to repeat what he last said just to mess with him for example. well maybe that wasnt the intention but its funnier if you read it that way (also wasnt this supposed to be some sort of comedy?)
i can imagine captain would get fed up of always correcting people hence why zee just lets everyone call zeer whatever though. would add to zeers whimsical mystery or something. no respect not even in a damn apocalypse. like goddamn

sorry for the wait anon you just gave me an excuse to update these dudes' designs
anyways i have at least four! from left to right:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sylvian ambrose is a traveling bard with bad luck in love and an uncanny ability to control plants. he has very little memory from before he started traveling, and his earliest recollection is waking up in an enchanted forest.
arius augurine is an angel of death turned human who is employed by the local adventurer's guild as a bookkeeper. he has a daughter that's part of the same guild and took the job to keep a closer eye on her
Tumblr media Tumblr media
valerian lumince is a dream archon, tasked with keeping his portion of the dream realm stable. he has a very hands-off way of ruling over his territory and only shows his face when there's an emergency, so dream denizens consider his public appearances bad luck.
and revaire récolte is a disgraced harvest god in hiding just a normal denizen of his quaint little town — no divinity shenanigans happening here! he ends up being the social media manager for a local magical girl group.
(required attributions: the flowery part on sylvian's vest, the pattern on arius' shirt)
