ossa is the objectively most charming character in fear and hunger 2 because hes not very good at presenting himself the way hes supposed to be. hes a little bit cringe. i love characters who have a way theyre supposed to be and then they fail at that while sometimes being successful. ossa is a playful and accepting person who is trying and failing and succeeding at times in being a very intimating yellow mage but objectively your first interaction with him outside the train is him being silly and nonjudgemental while he pranks you in the church. and then when you recruit him hes all im the biggest toughest guy ever. alright youre not as rational as you present yourself as being

Sometimes, Lloyd wondered if the Exspheres that populated the world were as numerous as the stars above them.

It had taken him and Colette weeks to find the storage room, hidden beneath a forgotten tunnel, just to the west of the jagged hills that made up the Ossa Trail. An abandoned place, one that they had solely placed faith in rumors circling over them when they had stayed in Triet. But the location had been correct, and here they all were – packaged in a single molding wooden box, left to shine within the dark. It had not even been filled half-way.

Exspheres were living things, tucked deep into sleep before a touch would wake them up. It was not surprising that they would want more of it, like any living thing would in this world.

Lloyd wore his gloves as he handled them, careful to not let them touch his skin. “Don't risk it,” his father had warned, and he could hear the distant knell of a hammer striking against iron, as familiar to him as the songbirds that would sing outside his balcony each morning. “Unlike these, we are only mortal. We are limited, but they will keep on taking.”

But even with Dirk's words ringing in his head, Lloyd felt that empathy leak out, and he wondered if these small stones could tell, just a little bit at least. After years inside the discarded of a black marketer though long dead, they would only be buried away in the dark again, all over again.

Colette had come down from her end of the room, her wings casting a light on the Exspheres he held within his palms. From that glow, they seemed to shine from inside. Was it a happy glow? Shining from the presence of another?

"They only had these?" she asked, as her wingtip brushed his shoulder. "They look so small."

Small things that were pushed into bodies, then tossed away, then stolen again to gather dust in a holding room- all in a search for touch and connection. Lifeless things, lonely things.

"I guess this one was a light trip at least," he told Colette, calmed by her light, finding it once again easier to smile.

"Are you okay to carry them, Lloyd?" Colette asked. In her wings' light, her own crystal shone, red as the sunset cast over the ocean. "They're small, but they can be so heavy."

Lloyd knew what she meant, feeling the weight of their feelings, all in his palms. Maybe in her brief time away, in her soullessness, she felt such weight too, enough to silence her voice and dispel any hunger in her.

The Exspheres had once taken Colette away, yet Colette did not feel that old fear and helplessness anymore, not as he held them like this.

"I'm okay. It's a bit dark, so uh, I think I need you to light the way for me." Just how such a hidden storage place outlasted here for so long, deep underneath Sylvarant, he'd never really get. And all for a meager stock of Exspheres.

And he wouldn't leave any of them behind.

"You know, they don't feel so heavy anyways." He grinned at Colette, walking with her as they moved down hallways, trying to find the hidden stairs they came through. "It kinda feels lighter with every step!"

Colette smiled, though her eyes slipped down to his right hand, where the key crest turned silver from her light. He noticed it, the quiet around them as soft and well-worn as an old jacket.

Still, some things try not to be a burden.

"Maybe you can carry the rest of them when we find a bigger stash," she teased. Then she skipped ahead, her wings bobbing up and down with her, playful in each tender motion. “I think that would be fun!”

Lloyd pouted as he rushed to catch up with her. "Hey, now that's pushing it!" And as he ran, holding the Exspheres close to his chest, he felt a warmth from his hands, like sunlight rushing over skin.

Even in the dark, light led their way. Violet cast across the floors along with azure that radiated like underground waterfalls. Lights that called out to one another, that knew each other, even with the night sky cut off from them.

It didn't feel so lonely now – and felt less so, with each step they took.

Couriers: VS Drakkar

Okay I am v. behind on Couriers summaries so I’m going to make a bunch of posts that summarize but also hopefully hit the emotions right.

Picking up where I left off: The big showdown vs Drakkar.

We made it to the Mouth of the World, a *MASSIVE* hole in the ocean, just literally a hole, like this: 

but like a mile across in the middle of the ocean.

Drakkar’s ship, the Maelstrom, is anchored near the edge.  Walker gives the party some temp HP and Bud gives us Water Walking just in case.  We come right up on them in a broadside, latching the Seahawk to it as we leap aboard. The crew of the Seahawk pushes forward to distract his sea-zombie crew, while the party cuts through to head directly for Drakkar himself. Aeron and Keyleth are slowed as sea-zombie hands literally reach through the deck and grab us, but Kaicis hits Drakkar with a Firebolt and Nimh charges forward through the sea mist surrounding us to get him with a Ray of Frost.

Drakkar reveals he has the ability to electrify the sea mist covering the ship, but Kaicis traps him in a radiant-damage Wall of Fire. This doesn’t hold Drakkar for long, though, and he Terminator walks through the wall to slash at Kaicis, who Hellish Rebukes him in response. Keyleth uses his glass-tipped arrow to escape the grab and double-marks Drakkar, and Aeron escapes and rushes forward to stab Drakkar, but we’re all grabbed again and he summons a massive wave to knock us all prone. Aeron uses his glass-tipped arrow to escape prone, and Nimh uses Misty Step to appear just above Drakkar and does a dramatic hammer-smash downswing coupled with a smite to do massive damage break one of Drakkar’s arms. After another round of hits, including another massive hit by Nimh, Drakkar finally grabs the still restrained Kelvayla and uses his control of the sea to escape the ship over to an outcropping on the edge of the Mouth of the World.  

We follow via Water Walk and on the way we are slightly waylaid by some water elementals, and arrive at the outcropping to find a heavily corrupted Drakkar who is now half tentacle and undersea monstrosity. The water around the Mouth of the World starts swirling and bubbling. Keyleth circles around Drakkar to get Kelvayla, who is tied up at the edge of the outcropping hanging over the precipice. Aeron and Nimh push through a fear effect and attack Drakkar, but Nimh is grabbed and thrown into Kaicis. Aeron panics and uses Hunger of Hadar, enveloping Drakkar, but Drakkar uses a blast from Kaicis to judge which direction to move out of it and swamps the outcropping with a wave that pushes Keyleth into the Hunger of Hadar. Aeron drops the spell, and Keyleth rushes Drakkar to hit him with the Sunblade. Nimh meanwhile roars, revealing their scales, and breathes ice breath on Drakkar, charging him and knocking him prone. Tentacles of some massive creature, barbed and thicker than any tree, start reaching out of the Mouth of the World.

Drakkar does another surge-step over to the edge where Kelvayla is and cuts her bonds, sending her falling into the pit of tentacles. But then, with a flash of light, she rises back up in the arms of a woman made of the same crystal as the Star.  Cilali.

She blinds Drakkar with her light and everyone rushes forward to attack him, knocking him back into the Mouth of the World, which screams and closes. We all move forward as Cilali and Kelvayla descend to the outcropping, and then pass out.

We wake up back on the ship, Nimh having a major breakdown about the fact that we all have seen their transformation revealed. Keyleth accidentally makes them feel more like a monster with an unintentional comment, while Aeron tries to assure them that he doesn’t think of them as a monster. Nimh doesn’t believe him, and spends the next while quiet and largely avoiding the others as best they can.

We loot the Maelstrom, which we notice has stopped magically repairing itself, and find a strange gilded bracelet and a load of raw mithril. Then we blow it up before we leave. Keyleth confronts Aeron about the magic he uses after having experienced Hunger of Hadar during the fight against Drakkar, and Aeron explains it as having come from a book he’s been slowly translating. Keyleth asks to see it, but Aeron’s throat tightens and he gives an excuse of ‘maybe later’ and leaves. Nimh spends a few days healing a comatose Cilali, who eventually awakens. We explain to her that something bad had clearly happened at the temple, but her people still exist on Ola Ola. After some small consideration, Cilali doesn’t want to go back to them, feeling some guilt for not being there for them, and also wanting to explore the world.

We head back to the Ossa Maria for restocking and some healing/relaxation. Before we get there, the Kuo-toa give Aeron one last basket of prayers and then leave. We were given special accommodations and were told a celebratory feast would be held that night in our honor. We were allowed to enter the sacred garden where their weather orb was located, and were told that the Great Mother wanted to talk to us in person, giving us her blessing and thanks; a massive honor. Afterwards we had the feast and fireworks and a huge celebration. Nimh and Walker snuck away for a bit during the celebration and pierced Nimh’s ears for them.

A bit later, we finally geared up to leave and Xel’bal joined the Seahawk crew officially. The final ride to Fangport took several calm and uneventful days, during which the Sunblade was given to Cilali as a gift. The night before we disembarked, Aeron snuck into Kelvayla’s room while she slept and stole one of her horn cuffs, putting it on as a bangle bracelet.

The next day we disembarked to a big fanfare of the crew of the Seahawk and another musical number, after which they attempt to hit Aeron with a cannon-shot made of fruit as a final friendly revenge for his previous shenanigans. As the Seahawk makes a quick retreat from the Fangport docks, Aeron waves them away with the arm that has the stolen horn cuff/bangle on it, and in the distance he sees Kelvayla squint, realize, and start to yell and make to jump off the ship, only to be held back by a laughing Walker.

I spoke to paintings over twitter about this and basically I didnt get much of an answer. Saying marina is merely a woman now and her transition is just her being herself and not important to her story in termina. But I do agree the world of F&H is defiantly an alternate timeline earth. Where old god worships pre Abrahamic esque religions still hold power. 

I’ve always assumed maybe marina used magic to help her transition of possibly maybe it was medical science. Another theory I had was maybe she’s a castrato. But thats a bit grim. 

But I’m going to assume LGBT people exist in the world of F&H, due to sylvian. I swear I read somewhere the Ossa says that preheval allmer/sulfer worships is far more strict then the eastern cultures.  But due to the nature of sylvian and the god of fear and hunger possibly being androgynous it makes sense that lgbt people exist.  I like the idea of marina being an occultist due to trans peoples historical affinity to the gods and spirit realm in pre colonial societies. In ancient religions. 

The differences in the Fear & Hunger universe/timeline got me thinking: did Magnus Hirschfield exist and if so, was his work targeted? We know Picaso or some version of him existed and his life was going on pretty similar to irl because the museum has Guernica, but where does Magnus Hirschfield and his Institut für Sexualwissenschaft fit into it all? Did he outlive his irl counterpart? If so, did Marina meet him or contribute to his research in any way? Did he learn magic at any point, setting a precedent for magic in trans healthcare? I need answers
